My dogs eat lots of Raw eggs, i tend to feed my puppy only the yolk at present...........But we feed Raw and we have our own eggs, so they get raw eggs, a lot.................they often steal chicken or duck eggs. i think freshness is important and I suppose the possibility of salmonella. But if you see some of the things dogs eat in general, eggs look good

Oh No She's Eaten A Load Of Grapes!
newfsie replied to teekay's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Pre-knowing grapes were bad all my newfs used to love them, because they are sweet and lolly like.............We never had any problems, but there are enough dogs who do get sick, so keep a look out. it will be a nervous wait for you. i hope it all goes well -
Wait till a fully grown newf sits/drops in one...........very amusing :D

All the working kelpies we have had, have had them. it is one of the first things we used to get the vet to remove. As they used to cause problems when jumping in and out of the sheep yards. Mind you ours were just born on properties and not registered. I know pyrenean mountain dogs often have a double one.

Dog Snaps / Bites The Air When Excited
newfsie replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Zacky our previous rescue newf used to "play the Castanets".....We missed that so much when he went. He had this gorgeous clicking sound when he used to greet us and a low rumbling growly sound when he was happy and showing off his toys -
I love "orange" spray, available from all supermarkets

One lucky puppy to have found someone who cares so much......... I also got a puppy way too early, she was a rescue puppy from a backyard breeder, who were dumped. Golden cross Border Collie. The very important thing is that once you have her health and diet all sorted. And when she is fully vaccinated. that she is well socialized with other dogs..............My Tessa was quite different to all my other pups, who i got at eight to nine weeks. I think those last few weeks do make a difference. but she is great now and a well behaved dog. She is the bottom dog in the avatar. I feed RAW, so I m not much help with other food. But bones do play an important role in a dogs life. And chicken wings are great for this. Also brisket bones (raw) from the butcher are good. And they do not splinter. We keep all our pups very busy with bones and they seem to chew less on other objects As to sardines, the only thing we feed canned is fish. I prefer in spring water (no salt) or olive oil. We feed it daily to pups. We start a sardine a day and increase with size of the dog. My newf pup loves sardines and also raw fish Good luck with your little pup

We have a Jeep Grand Cherokee............We never have the back seats up . It has great anchoring points for the harnesses at the back for the three dogs. the back window( on the tailgate) opens up, when we are parked. this gives plenty of air ventilation, when the passenger windows are also open. Our dogs ramp in and out. We used to have a Nissan Navarre, with the dogs in the tray with a canopy, but it was too hot for them in Summer and you can't talk with them on long trips My dream would be one of those VW low vans, you can fit a whole pallet in. The dogs would still have the aircon, but it is low and so much space.

I have newfs....newf and water ,well.............. We use tyres and find bowls that fit within these tyres. One of ours is a very large metal salad bowl (huge) and even the pup cannot tip it when it is inside the tyre. The other is a bucket inside a milk crate. the milk crate is square and seems to stop the bucket from tipping. we also have a small kidie pool for them to play with and cool down. This is when they are in their kennel run. When our dogs are inside, they use our pottery fishbowl/ponds on the screened in verandah's. i think the water is cool and they love it

What Is Really In Those Dog Chews ?
newfsie replied to brightonrock's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't buy anything "made in China", especially food.......I even balk at soft toys made there. And if they are bought there, make sure they go through a full washing machine cycle and hang out in the sun to dry. -
As I always seem to run opposite ..... Our adult newf is very worried about thunderstorms. We just ignore her. Our newf pup of six months has no issues with thunderstorms and we have had lots of them lately. There was just one very loud close by thunderclap that made her come inside, but otherwise she just ignores it like we do. We seem to get dogs that hate it and does that don't care and they are all treated the same. Some must be more sensitive.

Relatively New To Dog Ownership...
newfsie replied to PrincessCharming's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well I adore newf and to me there is no other breed to compare..........BUT..........You do need money and they need a lot of time. newfies will soak up your time. Now you get this back ten fold in adoration, but you cannot leave newfs to themselves. Now if you want a dog to watch telly with , they are usually at your feet or on the couch with you with some part touching. I have Annabelle at my feet right now. She has to touch. And they are quite partial to a snuggle on the bed in the morning. it is why they love weekend sleep ins. Our newfs have always been dogs that have needed to be near us. but i think that goes for a lot of breeds if allowed I actually find training newfs very easy. We have had a lot of pups and have retrained rescues, but you have to be consistent as their memory is great. I have a puppy right now. Katy has not chewed anything, but her bones. She was so easy to potty train and she already does all the basic obedience. her recall is great and walks really well on lead. That is the most important thing, for such a large dog. Our dogs are taught never to charge ahead of us, even when off lead. I was very young ( along time ago ) when I had my own dogs and lived away from home. And They were my best friends. I started with a rescue dog and her pup from the pound. We had her for five years and I still miss her. Lobo taught me lots and allowed me to make mistakes. Good luck in your venture -
Clicker training is good.....i hate the clicker, personal thing, so i just say "yes" instead....works for us and no irritating click to annoy me or anyone else

Most likely heartworm..........They get a puppy one and update at six months

Cows are ruminates and their digestive system is totally different to dogs, they have several stomachs and regurgitate. Their bloating is caused by gases made by their food.....When they bloat it is due to a different reason and it does not cause torsion. And it can be relieved by a puncture with a trocar. And boy does it smell rotten. This should never be attempted to a dog. you can in the early period some times pass a naso gastric tube and be lucky enough to get some of the gas pre torsion out of the stomach. If you live in a Rural are away from vets, it is good to have a bloat kit, like we do and to know the first aid. But it has to be caught early Dog bloat is closer in relationship to horse colic.........And it can happen due to many different reasons. Stress and anxiety being a large part. The reason a lot of people soak food is because some dogs gorge their food and do not realise when they have had enough. If this is dry, it will soak-up fluids in the stomach and enlarge to a much larger volume and that in some dogs can cause bloat. Some large dog lines never get it, others get it. So many studies have ben done and so much has been done to prevent it. you can only do your best. I have seen dogs who have had their stomach tacked re-bloat Here is a link to a bloat chart........... http://www.gdca.org/Bloat%20Chart.pdf

I have had Newfs since the eighties, Giants by most standards. We always fed dry food soaked if we feed dry. But not with warm/hot water. We take longer and use cold water. Hot water especially can break-down the food. And we feed twice a day equal meals. If dry is used it has to be the best quality and made especially for the Giant breed, because the protein levels and Calcium levels are different. They used to feed the Giants extra calcium, but that has been out moded. We feed at floor level and also have been lucky enough never to have had bloat. We have now gone to RAW....The dogs develop slower and are leaner and hopefully this will be better for them in the long run. Eagle pack has a holistic giant puppy food, which seems very high in standard (and sorry $$$$'s)

No.....Pet shops have never sat easy with me...........I have always liked pure breeds, but i do take on rescues. I have always hated preservative, also for the humans, so I do not like bought food. And we have always had lots of animals at home, horses and dogs. And my parents must have been good animal owners, because we have not made many changes.

I love my newfie breed, but they are not for everyone...very expensive to buy and to keep. But to me that is all worth it. I agree with all the things Cassie said. I am still trying to get my head around the the fact that you went from Giant breeds to very little, but each to their own Newf are very much a need to be in close contact dog. Being left to be self sufficient in the back yard, unless with a pack of newfs is devastating to them. Ours go with us everywhere. You tend to have people avoid your house ...Especially if you have a drooly newf. you don't ever wear white clothing. But I find them loving and easy to get along with. Most of all you need a sense of humour. Hence i have found I like most newfie owners when we meet
