  1. Remember my little puppy????? Katy is 8.5 month old now......This is her running alongside Annabelle, she is on this side The threesome yesterday on the way home from training Tessa, Katy and Annabelle in the back of our shrinking Jeep She has been the best pup...Never chews, no mishaps and just a delight to own. And she makes us all laugh at least once a day, especially at dog training, she is a bit of a show stealer. The other two adore her, they are all best mates............
  2. We have always had working kelpies and Newfoundlands.........All were fed the same RAW diet, we cut our own sheep/cattle/chickens, lots of fresh veg/fruit from the garden. All the kelpies live well into the 15-16 years age group, All the newfs till about ten or less for one who had ovarian cancer (7). This has been the way since the eighties, so I think it is a lot to do with the breed. Giants versus Medium dog. All our dogs are very active and all were vaccinated/vet checked etc....All lived indoors.
  3. I love pure breeds.... And i would never think of you as a snob. And I have mostly had only purebreeds, even if some are pure breed rescues. the rescues have even been identified and had their reg papers. But I did get sucked in by a Border Collie cross Golden retriever (rescue five week old pup) four year ago and she has been the most incredibly clever, healthy dog and is just a joy to own. The only time I would call someone a snob is if they look down on the people who do the rescues and own the cross breeds
  4. Touchy subject this...i have got myself in a sticky situation once where I tried to help personally. Now i will only go through the proper authorities, I will never go down that road again...........
  5. That is awful.....And should not happen. I have taught my dogs to drop when meeting and greeting a nervous little one and we always start on lead. It is sad when either big or small dog owners do not show social manners. There is no way I would let my huge pup bound over to a small little dog. That is why people need a good recall before they go into off lead areas We were at a dog training session yesterday where two little nervous dogs were full on yapping at ours. by the time we had done some training side by side our trainer asked us to just get close on lead and relax. the little ones actually came over to Katy, who was lying down and sniffed her and relaxed. That is why I do go to that particular trainer with my dogs, because the dogs do a lot of socialization on lead and when they get really comfortable at later training sessions in the more advanced classes, we have off lead sessions after training.
  6. :D Mine do not go on the bed, mostly......there would be no space for us, with such huge dogs. But when my hubby has to go away for work, my newfie girl Annabelle often takes up his side of the bed. And if we have our sleep in on Sundays, all three scramble up to just have that little lie on the bed thing. I think it is just to get us up for breakfast I think it is a very personal thing. Our sleep in our bedroom if they want to , but we also have the doors open to our screened in verandah and often they end up there on the cool concrete. In Winter they use their beds more which are next to our bed. But my hubby is a very dog orientated person. In our household it is all about the dogs
  7. Will have to record that too, we are also training......Sounds interesting
  8. Yes I do know your dogs, I should have noticed the Rufus bit
  9. That is why we never go for walks in Summer or Spring over there and we wait for after the easter break, hopefully they have gone in hiding. So were you at Paws in the Park? We had a lot of fun there. We were in the middle of all the GSD's, Annabelle did some obedience
  10. The river runs quite steady, but my newf pup has no problems swimming it. She is a great swimmer, a real water baby. It is a lovely place, so pretty and clean........
  11. I have giant breeds and we are very careful to control all play with the pup..........We have taught our adult dogs "gently" and they know what we mean. if we say "gently" to one grown dog, the other will often push the rough dog off. It is quite amusing now, because the dogs have sort of controlled their play with our newf pup now. Mind you she is grown huge and now we have been teaching her "gentle" to protect the adult dogs :)I would not wait till a puppy yelps, especially whilst there is such a size difference. it could be too late otherwise. So basically we initially we always supervised all our play.
  12. I took on a Dog/people aggressive rescue newf. She was really a scared dog fearful of all men and dogs. I asked for help.....And I had a great dog-trainer/behaviorist help me with her. She nearly tried to eat him at first, but with his help we got over all our issues. I got the help of a lot of male dog trainers. And what they mostly did was ignore her initially in class and we would keep on doing our obedience. Annabelle now loves all the dog trainers and is really good with most people, but certain people still give off a certain aura, which makes her bark. I just put her at heel and she seems fine. But let me tell you it took six month of hard work and lots of training and with the help of a lot of people. I would never trust her like I do the other newfs I have had from pup............I would always seek help from a trainer/behaviorist.
  13. Awwwwww :D but it also made me smile.....A truly loved dog was Flog. a lucky dog. RIP Flog, another Angel for Rainbow Bridge
  14. Police paddocks near Rutherglen. I have no issues with aggressive dogs, but if it had been me, I would have leashed my dog as soon as I saw a car come. there is a long way in and you cannot miss the few cars that come in. I used to have a dog/people aggressive dog, so i have plenty of empathy
  15. we went for our usual Friday walk this morning. When we arrived at the River we saw a couple of campsites (School vacation in Aust). No worries to us, so we let the dogs out a little away from the first campsite.............We hear this panicked screaming and a barking aggressive dog and this woman is in panic mode trying to catch her dog. We just called our three (whilst she is still screaming). They were a little surprised to be called so soon and had totally ignored the commotion from the other dog.We put them on leashes and left the Jeep and walked the dogs on the road to another part of the river. we found a great new spot to swim Katy, but no pics, because the jeep was still at the other spot. Mike went and got the Jeep, whilst I kept the dogs swimming at the new spot. She was thanking Mike profusely when he picked up the Jeep and drove it to us, so that she did not have to scream at her dog again, whilst we walked past We met another guy just walking (no dog) and he said the dog had a go at him too On the way past her camp, I noticed a "beware of the dog" sign on her car.......Funny place to take an uncontrollable aggressive dog, sad really. It is an off leash area, even though very few people go there, because it is a little out of the way. We hardly ever meet any dogs there. I was just amazed that she did not get control of her dog whilst we were driving up, if the dog was so unhappy about meeting people or dogs.
  16. I also spend a lot of time at our obedience club where there are a lot of small dogs......I have noticed that it must be something in some of the large dogs that make small dogs react. because when i walk my two newfs around we get hardly any reaction from most small dogs, even when we walk close. whilst someone who has a very well behaved obedient GSD gets the total opposite reaction. We have talked a lot about this at our Club, because it is so obvious. My dogs must give off a good vibe "we won't harm".....I am not sure if it is all newf type dogs. i noticed a really happy Saint, seems to have the same reaction. Has anyone else noticed this? It is my believe all dogs should be well trained and polite..........Some of the small doh aggression is fear, but some is "just because we can" attitude and "because we are allowed" Many large dog owners are so worried about possibly losing their large dogs that they are often well trained. We have many well trained small dogs at our classes and I think that is just great........Therre are also some people with large dogs however, who think it is funny when their dog lunges for other dogs. It is all about who is on the other end of the lead.........
  17. I have solved the rescue bit....I always have one newf rescue and one from puppy. Pure breeds also need to be rescued. sometimes it takes a little longer to find one and sometimes there are huge problems to deal with. But it makes us feel better to have the rescue dog and I still love having a dog from puppy. So when My previous newf rescue died we took on another rescue. I took a while getting a puppy, because a small cross breed puppy snuck in, so now we really have two rescues and one newf from puppy
  18. I just loved the Lassie's, Rin Tin Tin, Belle from Sebastian and Belle (Pyr), Rex and I still get a tear in my eye when i think of Old yellar (?spelling) I just love all dogs in any show
  19. We went to PAWS in the Park today. Annabelle and and I with three other dog/handler teams did three obedience demo's one every hour. We did a quadrille type of demo off leash. It was fabulous.......She was gorgeous, there was such a huge crowd and two dogs were actually starting a fight (boxers) when we were in a stand and leave routine. Our four dogs only looked. we had balloons popping, kids screaming and all sort of commotion. Hubby did the explanations and intro's.............. I am so very proud of my gorgeous girl...... Katy also had a busy meet and greet day, I walked Annabelle and her around in between and they were just loved to death by lots of people. Especially Floofy Katy. She managed to slobber on quite a few people........She made a lot of people laugh. We only had one dog try to attack her, but Annabelle just stepped in front of her and the dog nearly had a coronary when he met her. there were hundreds of dogs, all on leash, lots pulling their owners about. But a great event and only one real fight at the obedience demo and they belonged to the same family (??? figure that). We were there from 0730 until 1200 and now the dogs are snoring. They were true troopers. We have also been on the news on two channels to advertise the event. One did Annabelle doing obedience, the other did me with three dogs and hanging on to three poop bags to give to Hubby ;) They said they thought it was important for people to see dog owners cleaning up Next stop Mutts in May first weekend in May @Howlong and Million Paws mid May @ Albury........
  20. Just make sure you get your dog checked for heartworm before you start treatment, because we have just had the mozzie season. Starting the preventative treatment if a dog has heartworm is very dangerous for the dog. And I think 7 month might be a little late at the end of the Summer season. Just check with your vet.
  21. ;) That will never be my problem..........They are rather large, but i can see how scary it might be for little dogs. I love taking my dogs to all sorts of social events
  22. I'd hardly call the Pyrenean Mountain dog tiny weighing in at about 80kg! I grew up in UK watching Belle & Sebastian on the TV, so I am familiar with this breed, LOL! Certainly does not have ringlets! I loved that show.......I had so forgotten about that show.....And they are not that rare, very white, just looks like a white newf
  23. I could not buy one on principal,I never go into a pet store who sells puppies/kittens............Because I am a soft touch and because I can get a little agitated and I might cause a scene. I so loathe petshops selling puppies/kittens
