  1. We love having more than one dog and all the dogs are really people dogs, but have great times entertaining themselves with play......But I do relate to having a dog who belonged more to the other dog. It happened to us once, but I think it was the character of that particular Kelpie and I think maybe his early introduction to humans was not too good, so he bonded with one of our newfie girls. We always used to say that The male newf was Hubby's dog, Abbey the newf was mine and Nugget belonged to Abbey. But over the many years we have had multiple dogs and usually three or four, it only happened once. We give our dogs one on one time and group time. As a couple we find the dogs sometimes choose to bond to one of us more. And we cannot pick it ahead of time, it just happens. Our youngest newf is the first dog we have owned for quite a while who is very equal in her loving for both of us. Annabelle is more mine and Tessa more Mike's. I feel happier leaving my dogs, when i go to work knowing they are not alone
  2. Being a long time newfie owner I consider myself an expert on Drool . For a easy clean-up I use the Sugar soap spray. It works well on most surfaces and even on well dried drool ;)
  3. Great we had a lot of fun at the one in Albury. Great learning experience...........
  4. Agree completely. You'd think so wouldn't you. Not so many for country exhibitors unless they want to travel a couple of hours each weekend. This is one of those things about dog showing that gets me. So many people whinge about the Judge only judging faces OR say that someone has only won because they're Secretary etc. If that is really the case what the hell are we doing showing? Unless we are a face or on a committee we're all screwed. I choose to believe that it is not that way. If I was proved wrong and it was shown that it happens in the majority of shows I would give up showing as a waste of time and simply concentrate on improving my breed. I would have to just totally agree....I have only just started showing and I would like to think that I could enter a show locally and I am on our Committee and so is my husband. Even when you are on the Committee you hardly have any contact with the Judges. Some Judges are friendlier with entries they have met before or are friends with anyway. Being on the Committee would surely not really benefit.
  5. Well if you are doing Rally-O I would be very interested....Would also love to learn more about agility with my Border Collie cross. Wishing you well in your venture, good luck......Ronnie
  6. Problem solved.......And anyway "Droolz Cool" ;) Katy loves to walk with a towel in her mouth.........She loves to carry stuff
  7. I am so sorry for your loss..........That would be such a shock, another Angel for Rainbow Bridge, just too young. One of my newfs once just dropped dead, no warning........She seemed healthy. It was a cardiac problem, a clot........
  8. We have alway had a number of dogs. six, four and now three..........we often have bitches, but some multiple's of dogs too. We have mainly had newfs and working Kelpies. We have not had any issues, except for the rescue newf girl, who wanted to kill our other bitch initially. but we took control and everyone now lives past and present in harmony. When a disagreement does seem to start, we alwayf growl at the bottom dog. She is the one who should not disagree with the number one dog. That seems to keep the peace. we have never kept them seperated, even when they did have the disagreements. We have made our dogs realise that they have to behave and we are the ones in control. In general newfs are very easy going dogs. We used to have two newfy girls and one boy and life was so quiet. And our working kelpies have always been easy going. Not sure if it is to do with who handles the dogs or the breeds. when I lived at home my parents bred GSD's and we had two males and four females and we never had any issues. Ofcourse they were kept seperate at season time..........
  9. I would do anything if it would help my dogs, but I would not keep alive a dog who has to suffer, just because i would miss them..........I have my dogs insured, but i would ask, sell or run up an account
  10. I love horses and being around horses. Horses teach you honesty. They are a lot more sensitive to your moods and they are not as forgiving as dogs....they also teach you calmness. Because if you are calm, sensitive and quiet in your behaviour you get more from your horse. It has taught me to be better around dogs. And I also love working with cattle....If you treat cattle well they are great to be around. Prey animals are quite different to work with compared to dogs, but in some ways you can use similar methods. I just love animal psychology and learning about their behaviour in the wild
  11. My newfie Annabelle had fear aggression to both dogs and people. We tried to go the vet behaviourist way, unsuccessfully and found a good dog trainer/behaviorist who had a lot of hands on experience with large dogs. he saved her life, as the vet gave up on her and suggested PTS. Annabelle is a gorgeous people and dog friendly dog now. We just did a lot of obedience and we trained and trained and trained some more. A lot with initially other dogs and dog training people and on the general community, by lots of walks in town. It was a lot to do with teaching us to and we had to be totally committed to the program. It took at least a good six month before we felt we could trust her. i learned a lot from him and also how to read a dog, which can prevent a lot of potential problems. It is not something that can be fixed with a couple of sessions of training. Obedience is now part of our lives. I hope you are lucky enough to find someone like I did to help you............
  12. She is gorgeous, we used to own a Tervueren in the eighties, I adored Lobo
  13. Just wondering where everyone stays if they have a caravan and three large dogs near Eskine Park. No camping allowed at Erskine Park anymore. Am going to a Seminar on the 19th June and we come from a long way. anyone have any ideas??? Thank you in advance
  14. We have two newfoundland dogs and one golden cross border........Our dogs live inside with us or are outside when we are outside. We live on a rural property and have dams for the dogs to swim in every day. We do obedience training and believe it or not agility training. We do a lot of town walking for socialization and we go to areas to meet other dogs and people. Our dogs have a lot of freedom on our property and go to a lot of places with us. they are lucky, because hubby works at home. I am also a true believer in bones...Our pup has not chewed anything in her eight months with us. She is just too busy with her daily bones
  15. Katy our Newfie Puppy goes for many swims in our dam with the wild ducks....One duck has this game, where she swims towards it and it goes under-water and comes up behind her. She looks puzzled and just swims around in circles. The duck can easily fly away, but it just does this with her. I love watching it, it is so funny. Zoomies by two newfs chasing a Border cross Golden is also huge entertainment. Our little Tesa is so fast and the newfs have no hope Also newfies dive bombing Tessa in the dam....They are really good at it. Running from the bank and bombing her in the water. It just makes me smile to see our dogs just play and have a lot of fun
  16. I know it sounds tough, but i would not give anything for pain.......if you give painrelief, the pup may get more active. Rest is best and a bit of discomfort leads to more natural resting by the pup. It is quite common in newfies and that is what we usually do........
  17. newfies..Major blowout twice a year and quite a bit of floof all year round. At least it is black and soft I groom a lot and groom out all the undercoat. Also swimming, which ours do a lot, seems to help. Have noticed people with non-swimming newfs seem to have denser fuller coats and therefore more hairloss. I don't think mine are any worse compared to some of the GSD's I know ;)
  18. Mine are giants........we try to keep our protein levels down. I find mine grow really fast intil 6 month and slow down a bit. Katy my 9 month old pup is kept really quite lean, but has just started to broaden. She is 26" high already. we really make an effort to keep our newfie pups fit with swimming and to keep them ribby. My three year old girl never put on any more size after about 16 months. But I had one girl who suddenly seemed to put on a couple of inches at two. So I think it depends more on each individual dog and it's line. They do grow too fast, I miss my little baby floof ball. But I love my silly nine month old delinquent
  19. This might suit........... http://www.seascapestleonards.com.au/ It has been a little while since we went there........... And this one............ http://www.moonlightretreat.com/ We have just renovated a caravan, sothat we can take ours everywhere. it is a lot cheaper and I am planning on going to some more training work-shops away from home and shows/obedience events
  20. With my adult newf I can tell the difference, but Katy hardly ever barks and previously only in play. So this was a new one. I thought she was looking at a duck/herron on the dam and getting exited. but i know what you mean. With Annabelle i can definitely tell the difference in bark. And because she stayed relaxed i thought nothing much was happening........Annabelle was probably not concerned about Johnno
