Will Water Loving Dogs Swim And Swim And Swim
newfsie replied to Lucy's mama's topic in General Dog Discussion
We are lucky to have a lot of areas, where we cwn let our dogs off leash. We encourage our young newfs to swim as it is low impact exercise and builds good muscle structure to support their for example hips . A lot of vets who specialize in giants with HD, will actually recommend swimming. Katy will swim, but comes back in by herself. She goes in and out whilst we walk the shores of Lake Hume. Most of ours will do this. we have never had a dog swim away and not come back. But i suppose their will always be a first dog, that keeps swimming. We get our dogs to retrieve from puppy on. On land and in the water. So they interact a lot with us to and fro. I think swimming is good for dogs -
When I was six/seven i wanted a dog like in Peter Pan. Nana was a newf. i got my first newfie cross in the early eighties and my first pedigree in the late eighties. Since that time I have always had at least one. They are my special breed

Older Dog Very Aggressive Towards New Puppy
newfsie replied to RealityBites's topic in General Dog Discussion
It could be plain old jealousy........We have always allowed our mature dogs and new pups together form day one. We meet and greet on neutral ground on day one and from there on they are all one big happy (most of the time) family. we have always kept time spent very equal and together and made a lot of fuss over the other dogs. We have had several different male/female mixes and mostly three dogs. but we do have newfs and golden crosses. Our adult dogs seem to take on the protective role of our pups. have never had a problem in the last thiry or so years by just putting them together after a first meet. At this stage i too would get professional help, because it sounds like there are now some issues, I hope it all goes well with some help -
very cute

How Did You Find/choose Your Dogs Breeder?
newfsie replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
In the eighties there were not many newfs around, we found our breeder by asking lots of questions at shows and have since got all our dogs through her. be it puppy or rescue. As she also does newf rescue.......... -
Great stuff and I also use Paw Paw ointment. I have had some huge injuries on one of our horses face and they are now very difficult to even see. Paww Paw is very safe and quite cheap, also great for humans.

My two newfies snuggle together when it is cool, but our other dog hates it, She has a lot of personal space. But doesn't mind it in the back of the car
-
Yes if i could not have my newfs I would have a Bernese Mountain dog, I know a couple and they are lovely dogs

Katy turned one today.....She has been the most delightful pup to own. With the help of her "big Sisters" we have now got a happy well behaved newfie :D Here is a smilebox I made of some pics and a little video. I do "miss" my little baby http://smilebox.com/playBlog/4d5467794d444...p;blogview=true

We use them, but I keep a close watch on the other dogs and we just leave if there are aggressive dogs.....We are lucky in that our dogs are large and not many dogs seem to go for newfs, they just seem to make friends so easily or are very good at ignoring aggressive dogs. Our dogs are quite well trained and have great recalls or will drop on command from a distance if they are frightening a dog by their size, to make the other dog more comfortable. I love off leash beaches and we make the most of them when we travel. maybe people are worried about their dogs, because ours are so large and keep control of their dogs when they see ours ;)

We love to travel and have our dogs along...........Our dogs are rather large, so just all of us in a 17' caravan was at times awkward. But now our old caravan has been renovated on the inside by hubby. Mike has created a large crate area for our newfs and Tessa, We have our camping double mattress on the floor and they even have there own window, which is covered with mossy mesh and dog proof mesh. We will leave it open most of the times, but we are able to lock them away at times. We have also put dog proof mesh on top of the mossy mesh in the door, so that it can be left open. Our dogs love the caravan and go in and out by choice if left open. They love their new crate area and Katy has brought some of her toys in. We will enjoy travel with them a lot more now. We have found some great caravan parks and some great places to stay with dogs, some even have off leash places next door or nearby

;) Great job done again.........

Glad to hear all is well again. Phew.........My worst nightmare is Bloat.

Number one to me is "recall" as said before it could save their lives And number two is Socialization and I include food aggression with that. it is nice to know you can take your dogs along and enjoy life. Third would be all the basic training to make them a joy to live with I have noticed that with each pup you own, it gets better and better............

I have one mongrel..........Border collie cross Golden Retriever "Coltriever to some One rescued pure bred and one purchased from puppy pure bred and I still have comments about my dogs. You just can't please all of the people all of the time. I thought I had all bases covered with my lot Rescue, purebred and cross bred :)Most say "you can't do obedience with newfies and ask wether my "mongrel" is a Flat coated retriever, why does she have to be a pure bred, We know what she is and we love her as she is. To me they are just my dogs and I love them equally. I personally love all dogs if they have the right temperamant for me.
