I think newfs just love to swim as does our Border cross goldie Annabelle had never been swimming when we got her at 14 month, but Tessa showed her and she was in and loved it Annabelle and Tessa took Katy in for a swim at 12 weeks, they stayed with her the whole time, so cute And now she retrieves her bumpber out of the Murray

Hubby made our dog ramp This goes with us everywhere, we have a load of newfs and the average weight is 60kg, the step is only small and easy to carry. it comes on and off really easy. And it can even fit on whilst our trailers are on

I feel desperately sad, we had to let Toby go and be free of pain........... Arthur, our Vet agreed that nothing could be done to make our sweet boy more comfortable. He vomited last night and was very restless. We gave him a lovely happy morning with his favorite breakfast and his Secret Santa was opened, thank you Sydney........he loved his crackling frog. We took Toby for his drive, with his new toys, with all the windows open, so he could slobber in the breeze. I could see him smile. Mike and I held and cuddled him, in the back of the Jeep and told him we loved him. it was so quick, he just went to sleep. Arthur is so kind and gentle We have buried him next to Zacky and deep in our hearts We loved you big guy While you could not speak the words, I could hear the whispers of your voice. Telling me it was time to go, to celebrate your life and rejoice. You decided it was time to go and find your resting ground. You lay down your tired head and went without a sound. In my heart I know you loved me, as much as I loved you. I pray you've found the peace, that's helped to see me through. I thank you for all the joy in my life and the smiles you've brought to me. May God guide you on your journey and may your spirit always run free. http://secure.smilebox.com/ecom/openTheBox...3d0d0a&sb=1 I made this Smilebox for a gotcha day, I guess it is in his memory now, please watch it and celebrate his life Toby is now with our newfies Zacky, Abbey, Jessy, Josh and our work dogs Cody, Lobo, Fred and Nugget

How heartbreaking :D I would never rehome a dog for being a dog I worked in kennels and dogs act VERY different there then they do at home, my guys can not be together at Kennels, or they will fight, where as my cats, who do not like each other here at home, love each other and snuggle together when at catteries. that poor bully I totally agree....We even suggested a re-home, but they would not have it. they took the dog themselves. it has happened over 25 years ago and i still find it sad

I have once had to pull a Bull terrier of his own Springer Spaniel Housemate in the Kennel we were running many years ago. we luckily had a running hose nearby and we nearly drowned the Bull Terrier, before he would let go. Two people, including my hubby, were unable to pull him off. They had lived together for years. We have no idea what set him off, possibly stress, but the owners did not want him back. he was PTS by them. The Springer was very lucky to survive, mainly due to loose skin. The thing that always amazed me that he calmed right down afterward and was very friendly towards us, even after what we did to him. I always wondered if he had a brain tumour or such.

Yes I will always remember the vet ( Canine behaviourist from Delta) who told me to put Annabelle to sleep...Amazing what obedience training and counter conditioning can do and not all was positive reinforcement. And who could handle a 50kg newf without check chain when you first get to meet the dog at 14 months. I was lucky enough to meet a good trainer, who was willing to use anything that could help us and train both of us As to Hugh Worthless........I am speechless

You are perpetuating the incorrect belief that "spoodles" are a real breed. You should make the effort to explain to people they crossbreeds. x2 I don't bother calling my staffy/norfolk mix a "Staffolk," I just say "he's a staffy cross." And our Golden X Border is not called a Coltriever, but we call her a "Border cross" or "goldy cross" depending on who we talk to

Purina's "information" On Feeding Bones To Dogs
newfsie replied to Whippetsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
This is an area that interests me and if I had the time I'd look more into it rather than casually muse on it - but I wonder if this too is something that domestication/selective breeding is responsible for? I mean, we breed for dogs that have considerably different shaped and strong jowls/jaws, perhaps more strong than their teeth (which perhaps would have served them well in other circumstances) can cope with. And regards the oesophagus size -vs- throat size musing (previous post), it is not so much that I think it is what we've been feeding the dogs, I muse on the possibility of our selective breeding for dogs of x head/neck width by comparison to (eg) body .... and whether that is why we seem to have the number of "bone eating incidents" that we seem to have. Erny, you could be right. Would be interesting to see a study done on dogs who are shattering teeth on bones. I have never had the problem and have been feeding bones to all sorts and sizes of dogs for most of my life without teeth shattering, so I am not qualified to speak on the teeth shatterers. Souff Hmmmmmmmm. Maybe that is why we have no problems. large dogs, always having plenty of bones, which means lots of Calcium and therefore strong teeth. Would be a great study as to what breeds, what feeding and how often bones were fed and from what age.......... -
Purina's "information" On Feeding Bones To Dogs
newfsie replied to Whippetsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
We have owned dogs and fed bones since the late seventies.........Our dogs are used to bones from puppy. They do not get overly exited about them and guts them, because they get one daily or at least once every two-three days. so they chew them slowly. we feed all types of bones, but only RAW. There are many dogs that die of problems from teeth that are not healthy and this includes associated cardiac problems from unhealthy teeth and abscesses. I think dogs also die from bits of toy, wood or anything else they chew, because they do not get to chew on bones. I have known of a dog who died from choking and aspirating on a peice of dog dry food and he died. You can always find anectodal incidences to support anything. I would always be wary of a company that makes dog food and treats telling me that anything natural is not good. Dogs can die if they are able to consume a large amount of marrow/fat from marrow bones, but a uncut bone takes a long time for even a newfoundland to get all the marrow out of. Quantity and quality are also relevant. And I do know that dogs who only get given the occasional bone deal with them totally differrent to dogs who are used to eating bones. I will always feed my dogs ( with gorgeous healthy white teeth at even fifteen) bones. -
I have heard of a Moodle a poodle cross Maltese and the person insitsted it was a pure Moodle

How Do You Cope, When You Know Your Dog Is Dying
newfsie replied to newfsie's topic in General Dog Discussion
You don't. You adore this dog and watch him live. And cherish every moment he gives you and makes you laugh and smile; every naval contemplating moment he shares with you. And you take a leaf from his book - the one that says "live for the moment" and which teaches you not to dwell in the past or dread the future. Yes we are cherishing every moment. Tobias is eating only what he likes to eat.........lamb hearts (five a day). lamb's fry and brisket bones (cut just the right size so he can manage them at the back of his mouth). He still loves to eat. No more medicines and no more chicken mince balls, which he thought were oridnary. Ywe went to the lake, he likes to paddle. But his lump is getting very large, but does not bother him. he just walks a bit funny. He sleeps well and still barks at those darn little ponies next door when they come to our fence Because he cannot figure what they are. he doesn't bother our horses. -
How Do You Cope, When You Know Your Dog Is Dying

Thank you Everyone for just simply caring for my dog It actually really helps to hear from people who care and do not think of him as just a dog, because he isn't he is Tobias......At my work, even though i am in the Human health Care professions, everyone says he is just a dog. I have had to PTS dogs before, due to old age and sudden failing health. But never have i had so long to think about it and watch such a beautiful dog, who is happy and adoring, and know he has not got long to live. My vet is a caring man and he will help.........we will be there with him, we always have been i just wish i could make him better for longer. he just deserves so much better. For now our life is all about Toby. he loves to come along for rides and loves to go to Obedience, just to visit everyone. If he is OK, we will take him to the Break-up Party. So he can be loved and adored by his fans, he has quite a few. Thankyou......you all have made me feel a little better, because you care about Toby -
I knew very shortly after we took him that he had advanced lymphoma, too late to treat.....i thought i would be fine and give him the time of his life. because his life had been so very bad. He also had a fractured jaw and still has to be hand fed, because he cannot pick up food. The jaw has healed, but because it was not attended too, it is not properly aligned. It does not seem to matter that we have not had him for years. We seem to have fallen hopelessly for him. But i find the sad feelings i have almost unbearable. We try to make his life full, but the dreaded lump keeps growing and growing. he seems to have no pain. pooping, peeing and eating happily. it is those not happening, that I keep looking for that will tell me, I have to let him go.......i have spoken with the vet, he says i will know. But it is so hard, so da.... hard to adore this dog and watch him die. He is so happy, friendly and gregarious. he loves to play and also sit with you quietly and look up at you adoringly. i know he does not know and i am trying to be happy for him. Who could have left this gorgeous boy at the shelter and hurt him so.......... So on a lighter note, i thought i would share some pics of him playing with his "girls"We took some pics whilst the pack was having their morning rumble after they had been to the dam........The dogs are filthy, but having so much fun thought i would show you Tobias enjoying life The pack......... So you wanna play? Toby and Annabelle Toby helping Tessa and Kate has a mad moment Tessa still in trouble and Annabelle "who me?" Annabelle doing her ver best to keep control of her pack, maybe? Toby loves playtime Mad Zoomies of Katy and Annabelle Tobias

I Almost Killed My Dog By Giving Him Fish Oil Tablets :(

So did I...it has always been part of the regime here for years -
;) How ture Newfsie but I was in Wagga on Friday. I drove through the storm on Thursday afternoon / evening to get there and have to admit there were some pretty scary moments. Wagga is in a bit of strife and for those going to Grong Grong next week it would warrant keeping an eye on the news and weather. I forgot about your wagga connection........I had to drive back from Melbourne last week with Caravan in tow, through some flooding and lots of wind. Stressful

I know Mercedes is Ok, because if she was flooding we would drown....we are near and lower

I still have to do mine this year, but i have some take-outs from last year.......Where has my baby gone ?????? And I made one of them into a painting, which I never even used

How Fussy Is Your Oh Pertaining To Dogs Inside The House
newfsie replied to Moselle's topic in General Dog Discussion
That would be my hubby who has a sleep-in with two newfies and a Golden cross on the bed.......And mine also lets the dogs in after a swim, but he does give them a towel dry first. Our dogs are definitely indoor dogs, we both love them inside -
I have three giants and one large dog.....the newfy pups eat quite a lot and so do the tin newfie rescues, but once they are mature they don't eat anymore compared to the golden cross we own. We feed a lot of RAW meat, veggies, bones and some cooked grains. We grow our own veggies and we have chickens who lay well. Our dogs sleep mostly on our screened in verandah and lounge about on the carpets. Our dogs are quiet when they are indoors and hooligans when we are out and about on our property. We go to obedience at least once a week and go for lots of walks near the river or lake. Ours walk well on leash, so walking is easy. We have found four easier then three. because we can take them out in pairs if we must, but we hardly ever do that. We have after all two arms each :-)

Thank you for the heads up......I will be watching

I'm Curious.....about A Discussion Oh And I Were Having...
newfsie replied to Bluefairy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes mine love Bar-b-q tables beside the river, hardly ever used by folks....luckily they know not to do that when there are people around
