  1. I must admit I should have clarified that our dogs are trialling and we work hard at home on them. Two older ones are at a very similar level and they are the ones I swap. I think it could be very negative and disruptive to a class if dogs are very different and maybe carry on when the others are being worked
  2. we have two starting times at our club.........I sometimes train three dogs, I will often bring a dog down to a lower class and do half classes with the others. And I have asked people to do sit/stays for me. it also works for when you enter two dogs in the same trial. one of our dogs goes into the obedience Demo Team with different handlers, she is quite good, once the handler knows how to let her know what they want. She is just a confident happy dog. The only one who does not get handled by other people is my previously dog/people aggressive dog. because i just feel that even though she has been totally reliable, i am much more aware of her environment and make sure that everything is safe........he is counter conditioned and I do not necessarily trust other people to be that aware all the time.
  3. I was given this a few year ago, when i was struggling with the decision of putting our Zacky to sleep. Only a fortnight ago i had to put our sweet Tobias to sleep and I feel it was the right time for him. It was all about Tobias, not us. And only yesterday one of our horses, I did not want him to suffer........ It is a very difficult thing to do and I am so sorry..........This poem has helped me IF IT SHOULD BE If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then you must do what must be done, For this last battle cannot be won. You will be sad, I understand. Don't let your grief then stay your hand. For this day, more than all the rest, Your love for me must stand the test. We've had so many happy years. What is to come can hold no fears. You'd not want me to suffer so; The time has come -- please let me go. Take me where my need they'll tend, And please stay with me till the end. Hold me firm and speak to me, Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time that you will see The kindness that you did for me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved. Please do not grieve -- it must be you Who had this painful thing to do. We've been so close, we two, these years; Don't let your heart hold back its tears. --- Anonymous ---
  4. And if the mouth has been checked and OK.....Could it be the heat? My dogs eat considerably less and slower in this heat-wave we are having
  5. Well done, solved a problem and educated the people too. And done in a lovely manner :)
  6. And i get...Fire-works, what fire-works.......
  7. The most gorgeous gentle Horse has been allowed to go to Rainbow bridge today.......... Johnno (33 year) our newfies best horse friend, suddenly got very sick and staggered..........Blood test showed he was in Severe Renal Failure. We have been working with a friends horse, Sonny (30) that had colic in our barn for the last four days and noticed Johnno was also unwell. Johnno was rescue horse we took in, a gentle giant. My friends horse also had to be put down as our vet said he was too old for surgery. He was also a rescue horse, who we had found a permanent home for twenty years ago with my friend. The horses are now buried next to all our other horses.........I can hear his paddock buddy whinnying, it is heart wrenching, poor Doc............ Run free beautiful boys..........Tobias will guide you Johnno with our three girls Annabelle will miss her best equine friend..........Who's feed will she eat?
  8. When I was a lot younger we went through Cyclone Tracey.............The Police came around about three days later to shoot dogs/cats (never sure whether it was a official ruling) My father stood his ground and completely refused and we kept our dogs out of sight (3x GSD's) and he said "over my dead body". My parents also did not evacuate, because the dogs were not allowed to come. They just sent us with friends. There is no way i would go with out my dogs, we have an emergency plan......Our horses would be more difficult, but if we had early warning, we would move them. Which we have in the past for possible fire threat. Call me neurotic, but better safe than sorry i think it is to awful to even contemplate leaving your animals That said I also agree that some people have had plenty of warning in some areas to leave earlier and didn't, but there might be reasons for that
  9. :D  Newfies must be related to labradors......cute video
  10. And when the Drafting tests start we will be there............ It depends on how well the cart pulls as to how heavy items can be in the cart. The cart we have for Annabelle can be well weighted with weight and very easy to pull. If the dog has a good fitting harness and is sound it should all be fine. Annabelle loves to cart. I am pretty sure the Rottie probably does too. it is very hard to Draft with a dog, who does not want to. one of my past Newfie's did not enjoy it and we never did it with her after the first trials.
  11. I don't buy the refills, i just chuck a bit of chicken and water in them. has the same smell and same effect of catching lots of flies
  12. I have to get one of the newfie Obedience ones
  13. My newfie Katy is quite adamant that she should be acknowledged. All people have to do is give her just the smallest quick stroke. She does not jump or hassle people . She just stays near them until they do. When it is done, she goes away. My Sister is not too keen on having a big dog nearby and she now knows that all it takes is "hello Kate", quick head rub and Katy goes off to sleep. If she doesn't Katy hangs around until she does. Often sitting nearby with a "hung dog" look. She also does it with the wife of one of Hubby's friends, who is not too keen on large dogs It might be a more quiet version of the same. Mind you if we send her away, she will go, because she knows we have consequences
  14. Yes Annabelle loves her carting and gets quite upset when you take her out of the shafts. She choose to lie near the shafts as soon as the harness goes on. And she has a bounce in her step when she carts
  15. Very cute and merry Christmas to you and Yours
  16. Must agree, I was amazed they attempted it. Must not have seen the dog........
  17. Must agree, I was amazed they attempted it. Must not have seen the dog........
  18. I do agility with my newfoundland dog, but I would love her to be this good
  19. Plain, flat collars for us too............Harness means tracking or pulling to mine ( because we cart). Our dogs walk very nicely on lead
  20. We used to have a Terveuren in the eighties and we carted with her, we adored our Lobo. We also did with our GSD.....
  21. Yes Hubby made it for me........And he did an awesome job on the shafts, they are beautifully carved
  22. We don't sit in it........We also drive our horses, Annabelle does the small jobs and where there are a lot of people, much saver
  23. It was our Kennel Club Christmas break-up.....Annabelle had all the human Newfie shaped cookies in her cart and the Bone cookies for the dogs. I wrapped 80 cookies here is my Darling Annabelle, she loves carting I unharnessed her for some of the games, she loves the games
