  1. Sorry but the number of times my Dane has been rushed at my SWF is...who knows....lost count....I've even had to kick them off my dog. I'm also sick of people not training and socialising small dogs properly just because they're small and can be picked up or more easily handled. I have the same issue.........I have even had a swf hanging of one of my newfies lips, ouch......But my newfs are very good at ignoring the smaller aggressive dogs. I make a great effort at the kennel Club to help small dog owners who want help with getting their little ones used to big dogs. there are also lots of small dog owners who do make the effort. i meet them every week at our beginners classes and advanced classes at our kennel Club.
  2. That is what I do...I take extra bags and find it quite entertaining to see their faces so far no one has not picked up. mabe they worry i will send my big dogs after them
  3. We would like to walk our dogs daily away from our property, but we at least take them out into the paddock to the large dam for a swim daily. They are indoors when we are indoors and out when we are out. we lead a very active outdoor life on a small property And we leave them in the house when we go to work or in a kennel room/run, depending on the weather
  4. Check out Tarcutta.....I know we stayed at the Motel there a few years ago with horses and dogs. It is exactly half way
  5. Southern Nsw seems very dog friendly....We have lots of reserves on the Murray River, lake Hume, dog off lead Parks and i see lots of people having Coffee outside at Cafe's with their dogs in Albury. One little Town even has a special Dog event called Mutts in May at Howlong, where they shut off the main street for the day. We go everywhere with our large dogs and have never had an issue. We walk our large dogs in the small towns. My only annoyance is that there are people who try to ignore what their dog does. I love handing them a poop bag and say "here you are, I have one for you". I always carry lots of poop bags
  6. So sorry for your loss, but it is good to hear that she has had a loving home in the end, another sweet Angel for Rainbow Bridge
  7. I would call the police too. if it is hot you don't have time........ That said there is also horse-floats with their tail-gates shut, top and bottom....Parked whilst the owners are at macca's having lunch in the AC. I opened up their front little door and went into Macca's to get the owners. They were amazed how hot it was in the float We never close the top at the back when it is hot and we have the round ventilators on the top. I would never leave my horses in a stationary float with only the smallest side windows open. We only park if we have shade and leave the fron access door open too, with the top of the tailgate.........I know horses can sweat, but it is still bl....y hot
  8. I volunteer, because if no one does there will be no trials........And you do learn quite a bit
  9. This is the ultimate.........I would love to just join the Coast Guard, at Lake Hume, of which we were previous members Italian School of Water Rescue Dogs http://www.waterrescuedogs.com/ In the USA, they do not use helicopters, but in Europe they do
  10. we use breathing techniques at our work. We do a lot of injection procedures, with only local anaestetic.....It works Also i wonder if the Grooming of one another would be part of the calming technique......... My Previously People and dog aggressive rescue newf, is often Groomed by the dog she used to attack when she gets a little tense. Now it does not seem the same as the submissive licking, but almost a "hey all is fine" type grooming. Tessa is not actually submissive to her. but does seem to know when to "groom". She also used to do it to the newfie pup, when it was stressed or crying. Don't know, maybe I am seeing too much. But ti does seem to calm. I have been to Tellington Jones work-shops. And have seen it work wonders on a very stressed Thoroughbred. Did not make much difference on our chilled Q-horse. I used TTouch on my newfie girl a lot pre-training sessions. And I do know tha calm attitude makes all the difference with both dogs and horses. You can especially see that when a horse has been injured. If you remain calm, positive, quiet and use T-touch type motions or massage, you can get a lot done without sedatives
  11. We have been doing a lot of Water Training. I hope to be able to do a basic Water Rescue Test, eventually. But I am only training from a book.....Has anyone any experience. So far we are going quite well. But I would love to meet someone else into water training/rescue We do a lot of Dry-land work in retrieving. And lots of "take it", "hold It", "give it"........... Tessa Katy Annabelle and Tessa "saving" Mike Pulling Mike back in Katy "take it" to Mike Katy "Saving" Mike
  12. I would be worried someone would take my dog......... Very sad for both dog, kid and owner. And I am sure the mother is now feeling guilty. I had a child hug my young newfie, whilst I was with her and talking to someone about my other newf.at Paws in the Park, it was only a split second. I was there, talking and next i see a kid hanging off my dog. Katy thought it was wonderful and gave her a huge slobbery kiss, but with the wrong dog........... The Mum and Dad were with her. I explained they should be more careful, they just smled and said she loves dogs, we have two GSD's at home.
  13. I don't want to be a winner.. just enjoy time out with friends. Would agility be too much for such a large breed? (Will google newfs also ) My bitch is a small bitch and very fit and agile.....We do not have lazy newf's There is a Breeder in the USA who does all sort of things with hers, you just have to start a little later and get them fit first with swimming http://www.sweetbay.com/ Look up Sweetbays agility dogs (newfs). She also writes books on training, Judi Adler is an awesome lady. I have met her and she is one dedicated breeder to improve a breed
  14. Our newfie pup mirrors the older a lot This is two dogs
  15. A newf......All my newf's raised from puppy and most the rescue's except one, have been the most laidback, cool, easy going dogs. They are polite with other dogs and love to meet and greet. But not in an awful rough manner. Definitely not nervous or stressed. even my rescue girl who was dog and people aggressive has reverted back to being a real newfie again. But I know newf's are definitely not for most people Just read the agility bit...I do some agility, but we will never be winners
  16. Some of the people at our kennel club have had cages made for their cars with these guys, they are really well made and don't seem to rattle
  17. We rent out a property with one acre. We just made up a contract for the owner with two dogs, it states any damage done will be dealt with and they have six monthly property checks. if anything is seen, it will get repaired and paid for.....We found since we allowed our renters to have dogs we have had a better quality of renters :D We have found kids more of a problem and drunken husbands. The last tenants asked permission for a dog and i said only if the dog was a house dog and well mannered. they have been awesome. Lovely dogs and owners. They have been in our house for three years now. If they leave we will allow dogs again. If you live somewhere rented now, why don't you ask for a reference letter from that property and from any neighbours, it might help. that is what they gave us and we checked it out. Also give a plan of how you look after your dog and what you do with your dog. This is again what these people did and I was most impressed. I think it helped that they were pro-active and i suppose we do like dogs too.....Good luck
  18. I am so sorry to hear this. and no matter how long or how short the time was it will be very difficult for you, thinking of you
  19. Inside/otside when we are home.........Large dog doors..........Depending on the weather as to inside or out in a kennel room with run when we are not home. Too hot they are in the house, too cold they are in the house. But in Spring and Autumn often left outside to enjoy the glorious weather. We have never had any chewing issues when we have left our dogs home alone. We always leave them inside when we go out at night, because of the mosquito factor. i like a tidy house, so with up to four large dogs I do have to do a daily vacuum. But they are worth it and really they seem to sleep when inside. Mostly when we are home, they seem to be where we are and if it is hot, they are on our large screened verandah's in from the heat and away from the flies. We have had work dogs, several kelpies, that we purchased as adults (working) and they always ended up as inside dogs too. And they still worked just as well. I know we were told they would not work as well, but that was a load of Bul-s..t Our kelpies loved being inside on off days, with their newfie friends
  20. It is what happens, when dogs roam in a Rural area........Sad, but as said before" the Rule of the land."
  21. I like working newfoundlands.newfies that are trained in both drafting, water-work and obedience. they are very trainable and naturally very friendly to people. But not to the point where they roam to find "friends". They are very loyal to their family. They are very sensitive and require a lot of attention and care. I love their innate need to rescue people. And how easy that is to redirect with training to be usefull as both water rescue dog, assistance dog and therapy dog. I have owned different working breeds, which we have worked on stock and enjoyed, but the newf is still my preferred.
  22. It probably won't....i had to have a special crate made for a newf as per their spec's. Don't have it anymore or you would have been able to have it. they wanted the sides solid (mostly)
  23. The Peadiatric one worked for us in several emergencies as we are out of town.........I have also learned how to do a subcutaneous fluid insertion and IV now, because time does'nt always play on our side. Sounds like things are on the improve
