Are you sure it is not a newfie ? They always carry and slobber their toys I think newfies do it a lot, because we do all the retrieval training, "hold it", "take it" and "thank you". Especailly Katy is always aming to please. She also likes to carry the mail, my hand bag or the horse leads. It was a funtion bred into newfies, just like herding is to Border Collies.

With breed specific rescue organisations, I think they vet the new owners very carefully before placing the dog. I know that my name went right to the top of quite a long list of possible homes because I already owned three dogs of that breed and am involved in a breed club and have access to all the knowledge and help I could need if it comes to that. Yep that is so....And we get the troubled ones .........I full agree though with LizT, but we have been doing this for many years and i am really into dog training and behaviour. And I have the back-up of a couple of awesome Trainers. And I have never been afraid to ask for help

I know that I got our one but last rescue newfie ( Toby has sadly passed away), because someone posted him on DOL and he was jut in the quenbeyan Pound and spotted by her...........The Rescue people do an amazing amount of work and I just always hope that some dogs are lucky enough to get good new homes. I will be taking on Rescue's in our household from now on. Three out of our present four dogs are Rescue Dogs, even though two of them are pedigree. Someone needs to give these guys a second chance

When Is On Leash Not Effective Control?
newfsie replied to Whippetsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
And they are often out of control little dogs too. Not only large dogs. I feel I have good obedience control over my dogs, but if weight became part of the equation, I would only ever be able to walk one at the time. When I often walk two to three. -
Boarding Kennels, Anyone Recommend One?
newfsie replied to moonbaby's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't agree with this bit though, Newfsie. Of course there are some dogs who might soil their pens. Although I do note that the dogs at the kennels I visit are out so often that they tend not to mess that much in their pens. But even then, the mess is cleaned up pretty much once it is seen. Because it might only be in a pen here and a pen there, anyone who did happen to see it on inspection wouldn't be too concerned about it. The person would probably also see it in the process of being cleaned it up anyway. I am only really saying this because of one dog we used to get, who every morning when you came in had made a mess of herself and her run. She was an old English Sheep dog and no matter how often we let her out she did the same thing, just a mess. And I will stick with the fact that some people cannot cope with it. And you have just no idea what individuals ( meaning general dog owners) cope with. We here on Dogz are really the more aware dog owners. A lot who board dogs are not always so awre of what can happen. Our final solution with her was to keep her with us, which was only because we were concerned about her stress levels, but her owners were not. In a kennel situation it is very hard to generalize..........I actually found it too stressful to try and keep all dogs totally happy and their owners, hence we sold out after ten years. They were great kennels, with a lot of time spent in large grassy runs, but no matter how hard you try, a lot of dogs still stress and you get results that some visiting people might not always understand. -
Boarding Kennels, Anyone Recommend One?
newfsie replied to moonbaby's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ever thought that you might turn up in the middle of cleaning? Some dogs get stressed at feed times too. Visitors often set all the dogs off at once at a time which is their rest time. I work in the pet industry and would turn you away if you just rocked up at my door for a squiz. It's polite to make an appointment to visit someones property. I agree, we used to have Boarding kennels and it causes such an upset when people just arrive, because some still do and just walk up to fences and start the commotion. Also some dogs, no matter how often they are let out are dirty dogs and make a mess and a lot of average people cannot handle that and would be aghast. It is better for your dog when hours are regulated....Dogs settle with the people who work in the kennel and it is only strangers that often cause all the barking. Just a personal opinion ;) -
Missed answering these questions. I think the bond between dog and owner is depends on if they just "click" or not. Even though I prefer to raise my own puppies I don't really get bonded to them until they are about 8-9 months, and I have a stronger bond with some than others. I always bond closer to males more than females, but not every male has the same bond with me. Some breeds are definitely a lot less work than others. I am always intrigued to see breeders of other breeds with a litter sitting quietly in an open basket, at the vets for the 6 week vaccination. If you tried to put a litter of Border Collies in a basket like that the first one would be out again before the second one was in. Basically, as puppies Borders are never still unless they are asleep. They have to be doing "something". They never just sit there and look cute like some other breeds. If you tie up any sort of fence or barrier with occy straps or cable ties, Border babies just chew through them. They are very, very demanding as babies, constantly climbing, digging, chewing and running and activity starts at about 10 days when they start escaping the whelping box. On the plus side though they are extremely easy to toilet train, so there is a trade off sometimes. I missed those questions too....i would say the strongest bond i have out of my present dog is my Newfie rescue, who was people and dog aggressive. we did so much training and work together and I think she knew I was the only one who believed she could be what she is now. The newfie I have had from pup is a gorgeous and happy dog, but just that happy and content and she knows she will be cared for. She is very confident and happy, but even though i adore her, she is not my Heart Dog. Annabelle is, we were connected from the moment I saw her sad eyes. I think hubby is getting the same connection now with our new newfie rescue, Lukey. Lukey has decided we are it. he has bonded in a week and we can go for walk and he stays with us and has a great recall already. Annabelle and Lukey are like they are on lead when off lead. Unlike our dogs from pup, who are having a whale of a time and full on ahead, they know we will not leave them behind.

Don't get me wrong, I love getting my newfies from puppy, but I feel compelled to take on rescues. I feel someone has to. It is great to get a puppy and mould it and as i watch my Katy grow with all her confidence and no fear. A truly happy dog. She knows she will be loved and cared for......The same for our Tessa we got her as a rescue puppy at five weeks. And I look over to my now two rescues, even the one we have had for 2.5 years. they always worry. Annabelle always has this slight worry about her. but her devotion is unsurpassed. She is so with me and so willing to learn. just anything to please me. the same for our new boy, Lukey. He is now just so happy and willing to please and trying hard. Don't get me wrong, the other two are a joy to train and very keen. but you can tell they know we are there for them and the rescues hope we will be there for them. It is a slight difference, but I have noticed it with all the rescues and from puppy dogs we have had over the many years. So I will always have rescues and if there are the really old or unwell newfies, I will take them. Or I take the ones with problems..Annabelle was people and dog aggressive and Lukey is very timid. So I voted that my next dog would be an older dog

Close Encounter With A Brown Snake
newfsie replied to mumtoshelley's topic in General Dog Discussion
Scary stuff. i lost one dog with a very large Brown many years ago. I just hate snakes for that reason -
And I can't believe you called her a lady!!! She certainly is not with such a foul mouth and attitude to boot. Sometimes by acting in this manner they think they appear tough, but they're not. Imagine, if she vocalises like that, what her kids will grow into. Poor kids. All I can say is Wow.....you are awesome and very brave

Just caught up, glad it is all sorted

I liked it and found it interesting and would love to know the results. i did my four individually as they are now, today..........I know a lot of that is from training, especially the rescue. I found it interesting, because it showed me how much difference there was between the two dog I have from pup, the re-trained rescue and the new rescue. I had never really thought about some of the things. i suppose breed traits will also show up. eg Newf's are very people orientated even if they have been mistreated. Very interesting

How Many Of Your Dogs Do You Walk At Once?
newfsie replied to snow_wolf's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would have to qualify mine as to now only when my young newf is in her "no pull" harness. because she made a fool of me, when she tried to say hello to a dog that i knew was aggressive. he walked quite close behind us and she was going to say hello. I had three big dogs, she pulled and only had her flat collar on and I just sat down. Bum on ground there was noway I was going to let her near the big Turkish Shepard dog, who we all know is aggressive. I think she thought "oh hi another newfie". So lesson learned. Do not have the youngest happy dog along without her harness....Sheepish I certainly was after that event. Once I was down, I was the happy distraction and got madly licked. luckily Mercedes's hubby untangled me :rainbowbridge: -
Yep we know....that is why we have to wait and see. we do know however that he was a forward happy pup at nine weeks. as all pups temperament are recorded. So it is wait and see. If he stays timid and/or anxious he will be desexed and never bred. That is how our breeder feels about it. Happy, confident easy going is a big part of being a newf. Mind you the difference today is already amazing.....he now comes happily inside and is lying at my feet as I type. One newf on my left foot and one on my right. He will come with us to obedience on Tuesday and we will see how he is with other people too. We have a lot of dog savvy friends, who know what to do around dogs. He loves other dogs and has no interest in chickens, ducks and horses all good signs

We can have a slobberfest....be i win

Now we have a new boy......Lucas/Lukey. He was one of our Breeders Dogs, who went to Kempsey. Owner left him with De facto and did not return from the UK. She was going to take him the the pound. Pound suggested return to breeder. I am not sure what happened. He is very timid and worried and even scared to walk into the house. Once in he is fine. it is as if he has been told off all the time, for just doing anything. He sniffs at something and you look at him and he cowers, poor boy. Not sure who the cause is. Our Breeder took him back again, he is quite happy with her and the Kennel maid. He now loves Mike and happy with me. Our dogs are good with him. He is quite handsome. We need to make him happy and smiley again. he had no timidity as a pup. So that is a plus So he is ours now to keep. Our breeder has written a contract where we can keep him, forever and use him as a Breeder (as long as checked with her I doubt we will LOL) and she might use him a couple of times. If he gets confident again ( no character fault, but environment fault). So we took Lukey. Lukey slept next to Mike's side of the bed next to Annabelle our other rescue newf. I think he will settle in. We will use some Agility and fun, to get him happy again :-) Luke hates the camera I know it is blurry, but it is kinda cute........

What's The Most Ridiculous Thing Your Dog's Been Called?
newfsie replied to ~Rumour~'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Well the labbradors were known as a "Lesser Newfoundland" in the dark ages, so the newf must have been a "Greater Labrador" -
What's The Most Ridiculous Thing Your Dog's Been Called?
newfsie replied to ~Rumour~'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Border Collie Cross Golden retriever has been called a Flat coated Retriever many times newfies are often called bears.....ponies.....or St Bernards -
I think Dinner Plain In Vic is the only Cross country area where you can take dogs. it is also where the sledding is done.....Hope you can take your dogs there
