What a gorgeous story .....it is so lovely when two dogs get on so well We have a very close pair here too. We got a new Newfie Rescue, Lukey, about four months ago and he has fitted in really well with all our dogs. But he has a very special relationship with our younger female, Katy. They lie together, they always touch and they play "soft-play". I love watching them together. As a foursome they have fun and they all play a good game of rough-house . But these two are very sweet together.

There is one more thing....we have a mouse invasion here currently. Is it possible he was chasing a mouse. Our dogs are in constant hunt mode at present. And if a mouse is buried into something they will try to do anything to get it

Rescue Newfie Lukeys First Day At The River Murray
newfsie replied to newfsie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes when our previous rescue, Tobias passed after such a short time, they asked could we please place this timid boy.....He used to crawl into the Kennel Club, now he loves going and has fun. he is one adorable dog, who loves other dogs and kids......... -
We have taken Lukey for lots of trips, but this is his first one at the River. We had to make sure he had a good recall before we went, because the Reserve is HUGE...... He loved it, they all did Here is our handsome dude Helping Katy retrieve a log Going for that all-telling walk, does he have a recall???? First call out of the River...Good boy Three newfies at the River Murray And Lukey on the recall We will go again, he did well. awesome recalls, even when chasing rabbits

With my puppies, especially my newfie pups, i bonded instantly. I met them a few weeks before taking them home and it was a definite bond, I picked the ones I clicked with......But I also take in Rescue Newfie's and I especially remember my Annabelle. She was dog and people aggressive and a really sad case. But I would sit and cry, because our early life was so very difficult. Sometimes I thought I made a bad decision and we were not meant for each other She had instantly bonded with me and I found it hard to give her what she needed in the first weeks, because she attacked our other dog. But our Behaviorist Trainer, who also seemed good with people had a heart to heart with me and asked me what I wanted to do. So we made a plan, where I had to take on full responsibility of her and hubby took on the other dog. Our time together and our work together formed the most amazing bond. And she is now my heart dog. I adore her and she works well for me and has turned into a friendly devoted dog. She gets on with other dogs and loves people now and I think all the training we did together has made this special bond. She depended on me and I look our for her to keep her out of trouble. It took about six months. i would now do anything for her. Our most recent newfie rescue is again a click form day one, but he is such a sweet guy. I am not sure how you will develop your relationship. it sounds like you have done everything, such as training etc. Maybe your grief for your previous dogs is what is really stopping your emotional bond. you sound like you are still grieving. I feel for you, take care

Breed Spotting At The Million Paws Walk
newfsie replied to cannibalgoldfish's topic in General Dog Discussion
We took our three newfs and one Golden cross Border.......Our dogs were loved and loved some more by nearly every kid. A very happy social day and it was fun. We did a Obedience Demo, which went well. And I did some carting with Annabelle, she loves to show off carting. I love going to these social days and the dogs enjoy them too. -
The Strangest Cross Breed You Have Ever Seen?
newfsie replied to jackie_a1's topic in General Dog Discussion
When we lived in the NT in the late seventies we owned a Bull Terrier cross Dingo. This was actually a great dog, but we lived on a property, I am not sure how he would have been as a town-dog. He had no aggression at all. And got on well with our other dogs. He was also a great hunter and used to catch goanna's and snakes. -
Survey 1. What are your thoughts of animals in pet shops? Cruel, Comments:____I hate animals sold in petshop________________________________________________ 2. N/A ____________________________________________________________________________ 5. Did the animal live with you till the end of its life or still is living with you? N/A 6. If you answered No for question 5, do you know what happened to the pet? N/A 7. Reason to give the animal up. (circle answer) Can’t afford it Moved housed Took too much to care for Too destructive Not good with kids No time Didn’t get on with other animals Other ________________________________________________________________ 8. Do you know where pet shops get their animals from? Yes Often from Puppy farms or BYB's 9. Does it make you concerned? Yes 10. Do you think Pet shops are better than shelter pets? It is not a matter of being better. I would just never consider getting a pet form a pet shop and supporting that industry, 2which often supports puppy farms. it is my opinion that rescue pets need a home so should be considered. I personally own four dogs of which three are rescues 11. Have you ever brought an animal from a rescue shelter, group or qualified breeder? I get my rescues through Breed Rescue for free, because i take on the problem (behaviour) dogs and re-train 12. Where you happy with the animal? I ahave had great success with all our rescues, though the first few month were often difficult 13. Did the animal live with you till the end of its life or is it still living with you? Yes, I believe in "forever" homes. Though I take my hat off to people who foster....

What a bummer for you and I feel really sad for you and your pup....I have giants and have had them since the eighties. As someone said there are many variables that can cause the problems you describe and that makes it no easier for you. I had a young dog who ended up having multiple problems and when we looked through her lineage and parents it did not seem to come from there, we even checked full brother and sisiters. but my vet, who was extremely straight with me, told me it was most likely due to the fact that my then newfie pup ran with our working dogs at too young an age. I learned from that experience and keep mine fairly quiet, fit( but no bouncing around with other dogs, swimming every day) and lean. I am very strict with my feeding of my young dogs too and add Vit C, glucosamine/chondroitin, kelp, fish capsules and sardines. We also feed almost daily bones. No extra additive calcium and proper Giant food only when I fed dry, though I feed Raw now. And so far the later newfies form the same breeder have done really well. One tumble when young from some steps or out of a car can do a lot of damage in a young giant. even getting up and down the steps or in and out of the car. we carry ours in and out and have special steps for the car. I am very careful as to how much to blame breeding, unless they are careless BYB's. hopefully your breeder has some health checks done, but even seeing the parents at their older age should tell you lots. I hope your Breeder would be able to give you some advise, but that would also depend on how you would talk to him/her/ Some people can put a breeder off-side by the way they discuss the problem. putting them on the defensive. by choosing a giant, and I adore them, we have chosen some likely health problems. these do not always occur, but have a likely chance. I would go and see a vet who was experienced in giant ortho. Our preventative meds for the four dogs we have do not even add up to The $100/month mentioned. I also have my pups form day one on Private Insurance, just in case. I hope you can get some help and support for you and your pup, Also after reading your question again.......If you have purchased a pup from someone who had their dogs health checked/scored, I too am not sure if you can make the breeder responsible. I didn't, I thought it was just bad luck. Just like one of my other newfies died at seven from cancer. I did however get a lot of support and advise from my breeder and we are still great friends.

Anyone Use A Horse Float As A Dog Trailer?
newfsie replied to Merrirose's topic in General Dog Discussion
We used to, because we have horses. But we have now put a large crate under our bed ( bed is now high) in our caravan and just love traveling with this unit. And the 14' caravan is lighter then our float and we have a comfy bed, storage, cooking and eating facilities. Just need to add one outside door for the dogs, direct to the crate....just looking for a secondhand caravan door to cut down. -
Albury Shows 5,6 & 7th August -murray Valley Kennel Club
newfsie replied to jan seary's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well plenty of time to ask for time off to attend. And I love entering on-line. next time I will remember to bring my receipt -
We travel from Albury to Berrima , but I would travel further if I wanted a pup from further north

They look great....Ours sleep inside at night , but the kennels look great. We have a kennel room and run for when we have our bitch in season or have to be away for longer then 8 hours. But I enjoy our dogs company too much to leave them out at night

:p I have four black dogs and three of them are Rescues.....And I feel lucky to have the pleasure of being owned by them......... :D

I am glad Ollie is feeling better. I too have had to deal with Cancer and found the supportive massages and rescue remedy a great back-up. Sadly you can only support and make them fell as well as possible. Wishing Ollie well
-
I agree you need a vet ASAP...But maybe you can give him some rescue remedy and some massage....Do you know anything like Tellington Jones massage or just quiet circular motions. If you think it is gut related we use pressure points on the stifle when we think our dogs are going into "bloat". If you are no good with pressure points, just rub the general area of the stifle in circular motions on the inside. If the dog passes flatulence it is working. It also has a calming effect. We also use this on horses with colic. That really works for us...... Just keep ringing vets. thinking of you I hope everything goes OK

Is That A Male Newf, I Want To Use Him To Breed
newfsie replied to newfsie's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think most Breeders have some sort of breeders contract in the newfie world. I hope they are unsuccessful in their search. Luckily I know that we are the only male (entire) newf in this district. But you never know. Lukey is staying entire for his breeder not us. He has some different imported lines , his sire was imported. And he is very sound, fabulous hip and elbow scoring and negative for all the other medical issues. the timidity was not a permanent character fault, because he is getting very relaxed and just loves kids, ladies and most men. Just still ducks when I go to throw a stick for the other dogs at the beginning of a new game -
We went to Beechworth yesterday to give Lukey some more interaction with people and just walk the dogs in the beautiful weather we are having. We walk our dogs in public in pairs, one each, when it is very busy, like at the market. they got lots of loving and "can we take a picture with your dogs", "are they Saint Bernard's?" and "what breed are they?" And the best thing was most kids asked "can I pet your dog please?" so lovely to hear. Our four dogs love pets from kids Good happy day for the now not so timid Lukey and happy Threesome. We have stopped for a drink in the shade, with Lukey and Kate and a guy comes up to ask if one of our dogs is a male. He want s to breed his female. I say yes he is a male, but we would never breed to any female who is not approved by Lukey's Breeder. Guy still just says he wants to breed, has problems finding a full male. I tell him that if he really is interested, he should contact breeders and enquire and that the female should be health checked (as are Lukey and Kate). So his wife tells me she is "she has papers you know", we have them at home. I tried to explain the health checks for newfie, but I got the "dead look", they switched off and he tells me they are still going to find a male. They didn't even ask if they could look at him properly and which one of the two was the male, as they were lying down together. Another BYB in the making, so sad....... On a happy note also met another great newfie owner from Melbourne with an eight year old healthy looking newfie girl. And just lots of people who wanted to own a newfie or had one in the past and missed owning them
