Allergy - My Poor Dog Is Getting Really Cranky!
Crazy Daisy replied to Crazy Daisy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have spoken to the vets this morning and they are having a look at who best to refer me to and will hopefully call back today. I didn't realise that the chicken could be the problem. I might start him on roo while I'm waiting for the specialist. Thanks for the help. -

Would that have shown up in the blood tests the vets did? Isn't endocrine to do with his thyroid? They tested that and it was fine. -

How do I check that? Keep him separated from the other two? I think that would break his heart. -

That's what I did I was on a waiting list for an endoscope to test for coeliacs disease and ulcers and while I was waiting I went gluten free (after advice from a natropath) and after six weeks I got my appointment only to be told after the op that I actually needed to be eating gluten to be diagnosed. Boy, did I feel foolish. -

That's what I've done 16paws. Like I said I stopped everything including baths and flea treatments. I stopped all access to grass, there are no trees or plants around. He is on a bland chicken diet. He has no bedding as he has always eaten anything I've given him. He sleeps in the laundry and I even moped the floor with white vinegar and water. I can't have any perfumes or sprays in the house because I have allergies too. We have floor boards through the house and when he comes inside after the kids are asleep or at school he sits on a rug that is only washed in white vinegar and water. It's a good idea about the diary. He is with the two other dogs, can sleeping with them have an effect on him? Like if I wash Daisy in a shampoo and he sleeps curled up with her would that have an effect? -

Yes, the vet did run blood tests and tested his thyroid and it came back fine. I've tried the calendula tea sas, internally (he doesn't mind drinking it) and putting it in a spray bottle. I have taken him to two different vets and had the bloods and scrapes down twice and both said they don't know what it is. Should I just go back and ask for a referral to a specialist? What sort of specialist would it be? -
I need to vent And ask questions, please? I don't know what to do with my poor boy Ruff. He is a rescue x breed, looks like a shepherd x ridgeback (?) He has had really bad allergies since about six months old, he is now 16 months. It has been getting worse. He has had skin scapings and blood tests and the vets have no idea what is causing it. Everytime I think I'm on to something it just comes back worse. He has lost a lot of hair on his back and his skin is starting to go black in some places and is red in others. I have tried ACV internal and external, different food diets, malaseb, aloveen, calendula tea, advocate, frontline and many other treatments that have been recommended. Some work for a while but then stop. With nothing working I decided to go all natural. In the last six weeks he has not had any flea treatments (there are no fleas anyway), I concreted the dog run so he has no access to grass (we even walk only on the road), for dinner he has chicken frames and chicken maryland legs and ACV, once a week he has fresh salmon and two raw eggs (from my chickens). Also, just this last week I have been giving him a polarimine tablet once a day (vets suggestion). So very basic as I wanted to get him stable so I could start introducing things into his diet. Problem is he isn't getting stable, he is actually getting worse! He is so bad now that he is really cranky all the time and has started getting aggressive to my other dogs for no reason. An example: I was hanging the clothes on the line (which is in the dog run off the laundry) and all three dogs were asleep near by. Out of nowhere Ruff wakes up and lunges at Daisy, my sleeping Shih Tzu, and just grabs her around the neck growling. I yelled at him and he let go and ran to the other end of the run and sat down with his head down not looking at me. I don't think he meant to hurt her I don't know if he just woke up itchy and took his frustration out on her. He really scared me, he is a big 29kg boy I would hate to know what happened if I couldn't get him off her or I wasn't with them. I suffer from allergies so I totally sympathise with him, but this is not the first time he has lashed out for no apparent reason, it is getting more frequent. I have three kids under 6 and they aren't allowed anywhere near him at the moment as I can't take the risk that they pat him and set him off. Do I just keep going with his basic diet? Is six weeks not enough time to see a difference? I have thought about giving him a fish oil tablet to help with his skin. Anyone know what dose rate to give him? (I have a huge jar of it in the cupboard) I just don't know what else to do?

Years ago I rented a house in Sydney and the lady before us had heaps of cats inside, even though the place was supposedly fumigated before we moved in it was covered in fleas. We had one dog at the time and asked the landlord to fumigate it again, they did and offered to pay our accommodation for one night (we didn't use it, we stayed with family). I would ask the landlord to speak to your neighbour about the cats coming onto your property. Then if that fails call the rangers.

Congratulations on your beautiful boy. He is just gorgeous -
This is what really scares me about byb's. People purchasing have no idea of either parents temperaments. What if they sell the puppies to people with young children? Totally irresponsible. I can't believe people would want that on their conscience.

I got mine from mary's van at Durack. I went with a plain colour but am wondering if a more bling one would be nicer. I love the ones that Teamsnag from here on DOL makes.

About six months ago my OH told me he wanted a quad bike. I said sure as long as I can have another dog. Little did he know that his $500 quad bike is soooo cheap compared to my show dog and all the trimmings. Even with new helmets and other "stuff" I am still winning on the most expensive hobby.

I love the look on the people behind her faces

I have one of those OH's I pretend to listen to "technogarb" and he pretends he's interested in "dogstuff"

Yes

I agree, at least if you dob them into council about this new puppy they will have to register him and will hopefully not dump him when they've had enough. Have you thought about trying to re home him yourself? Is there a rescue near you that does golden oldie re homing?

That's priceless ;)

I have been searching a lot lately and the two things that REALLY bug me is music and those annoying things that follow the cursor! Ok, that's off my chest now I am looking at a show dog so I like to see the pedigrees of the dogs they are breeding so I know where they come from. I like to know a little about how they got interested in the breed and how long they have been involved with the breed. I LOVE websites that have a breed standard and also the breeders who go the extra bit and explain the best way to groom them (if they are a coated breed) On puppy pages if there are no current litters I like the ones that either say "we have no plans for puppies this year" "We have no future plans for puppies" or " we are hoping for a litter in the first/second half of the year" Then I think you feel like you can call them or email them at an appropriate time than ringing them and telling them your whole life story only to hear that they aren't breeding anymore/for a long time. That's what I can think of for now

Nettle tea is fine for dogs as far as I'm aware. I have researched most of the teas I sell and when doing a search for nettle I found a UK company that sells it in tablet form for dogs (Denes.co.uk) So it should be fine. If your at all concerned I would maybe check with your vet.
-
You can just make up stinging nettle tea as you normally would for yourself. Try just giving it to him to drink or if he isn't interested add it to his food. Calendula tea is also great for allergies. You can make it up as normal and use it to bathe him where it's sore.

Well done on the weight loss, that's an excellent achievement I can relate I've lost 54 kilos and feel fantastic. I had my first show on the weekend and never realised how physical it actually is running around the ring. I think concentrating on cardio will be the biggest plus. I hate running in the cold so winter will be a bit of a challenge I think.

I meant mousse It is a calcium supplement for teeth. I use it for sensitive teeth and it is great. I really hope it comes good. He is a show dog and even though I've been told he can still be shown as long as I have a vet certificate saying it was lost due to damage than being born without one, I would still like him to keep it. I will watch it and see how he goes. He still is eating fine and it doesn't worry him when I poke and prod it and it's not wobbly at all.
