Choosing A Dog To Go With Golden Retreiver
Crazy Daisy replied to thomo84's topic in General Dog Discussion
My Shih Tzu gets along really well with my Goldens and I know a few people that have Shih Tzu's and Goldens. Their personalities seem to go together quite well. -
I thought I would post an update on Daisy. We went to the vet and she drained the hematoma and gave her an injection to hopefully stop it refilling. The ear was then wrapped around a tube from a bandage and then the whole ear bandaged and then wrapped around her head so it doesn't flop around too much. We have to leave it like this for 4-5 days so we'll see how she goes.

Of course it was a public holiday in the part of Brissie my vet is in today so will have to wait till tomorrow. I have bought some Arnica (thanks for the tip pers) and I did try to strap it but she just shook it off. I think I will have to try and strap it around the ear and her head to keep it in place. Hopefully the vet can at least release a bit of the pressure tomorrow as it's sure to be uncomfortable for her.
-
This sounds promising! Although I wonder if wrapping the ear around something a bit heavy with floppy ears may be upsetting for her and uncomfortable. Roughly how long did the ear need to be taped up for dancinbcs?

I didn't know that about the anaesthesia, thanks for that. I have changed vets so I will definitely be telling the new vet about her previous issue if Daisy has to have surgery. I don't like the cauliflower ear idea either

I'm pretty sure Daisy (Shih Tzu) has an aural hematoma. I was grooming her today and there is a large fluid lump on the inside of her ear. She doesn't have an ear infection and I couldn't see any insect bite mark so I think it was probably caused by one of the Golden's being a bit rough when they play. From what I have read the best option is surgery. My concern is the last time Daisy was under aesthetic was when she was desexed and she took a very long time to come around and I was very concerned. We'll be going to the vet tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone has had success treating this condition without surgery. I would like to know a few options before the vet tomorrow. Thanks

I like the new set up and the benches were really comfortable for the dogs. We moved the dividers out and put two dogs in a double and there was plenty of room. I found it really cold in there though with the air con going full but that could be that we were at the end right in front of the vents. There was no need for me to worry about not having a receipt, I just gave them my name and it was fine. It was a great day.

I've looked everywhere and I can't find an emailed receipt. I shouldn't worry, it must be very safe somewhere We're on next Saturday, although Aria has decided to drop her coat so after all this searching we may not go. Maybe I can sneak her in as a Labrador instead of a Golden

I read that too but normally they send out your entry passes first. That rule says you have to show your exhibit listing and receipt in order to get your numbers. Well I have the receipt number but that's it. I had a look at the online entries again and there is nowhere to print anything out that could be an exhibit listing. Maybe I got something when I entered and put it somewhere "safe"

I remember thinking it was cutting it close last year too

Quick question: Has anyone received their numbers and entry passes for the Ekka? It is getting close now.

Can I Ask For Some Prayers For My Furbaby?
Crazy Daisy replied to esky's topic in General Dog Discussion
I hope you have had better news this morning. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Positive thoughts for a speedy recovery. :) -
I like clipper world too. Dryers are a personal preference I have a Simpson Supajet and I just love it. It is not a force dryer but I found with the amount of small dogs you do in a grooming business it has been really good as a lot of small dogs hate the force dryers. Mine is nearly 15 years old and I have never had a problem with it. Having said that I would like to get an Oldfield one day to help dry the Goldens quicker and then finish with the Simpson. Edited to add: I also like my dryers to be on a stand so I can have one hand on the dog and the other brushing.

Which Flea Treatment Do You Find Works Best?
Crazy Daisy replied to Blakbelgian's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When discussing flea treatments with two breeders at a show a few months back they were shocked that I use Comfortis as they had heard of bad side effects. I did some research and I have found this study in America.... "In a reproductive safety study, Comfortis chewable tablets were administered orally to female Beagles at 1.3 and 4.4 times the maximum recommended therapeutic dose every 28 days prior to mating, during gestation, and during a six-week lactation period. No treatment-related adverse effects were noted for conception rates in the dams, or for mortality, body temperature, necropsy, or histopathology findings for the dams or puppies. One dam from each treatment group experienced early pregnancy loss and one additional high dose dam aborted late term. The treated dams experienced more vomiting, especially at one hour post-dose, than the control dams. Puppies from dams treated at 1.3 times the maximum recommended therapeutic dose had lower body weights than puppies from control dams. Although puppy mortality between treated and control dams was not different, the puppies from the treated dams experienced more lethargy (4.4X group only), dehydration, weakness and felt cold to the touch (4.4X group only) than puppies from control dams. A pilot study without a control group was conducted to analyze milk from three lactating dogs treated with an experimental formulation of spinosad at 1.5 times the maximum recommended dose administered at day 28 of gestation and 24 hours prior to parturition. The data demonstrated that spinosyns were excreted in the milk of these dogs. Mortality and morbidity were greatest in puppies from the dam with the highest spinosyns level in milk. The spinosad milk: reference plasma exposure ratio calculated from this study ranged from 2.2 to 3.5." I have decided to try something else as I also don't want to take the risk. -
I would estimate that that would be approx a 4F or 3F. F after a blade stands for finishing blade and much safer than a skip tooth if you are new to clipping. I personally suggest people starting out have a 7F for summer and a 3F for winter.

Poor Sarge. I say sue the owners. Maybe then they will take notice and never have this happen again. Council obviously didn't do anything

So it seems a lot of us would love to know a breakdown of the breeds being shown. How would I go about asking about this? Do you think just starting an 'open to the public' Facebook page called something like Dog show breed break down (or similar) would be a good start? I'm happy to do it if others would forward it on to show secretaries and they could start posting break downs. If the judges get a break down the week prior it would surely not be too hard to post group breakdowns on a Facebook page.

Maybe large sensor flood lights for night time? They are a pretty good deterrent and easily bought from the local hardware. Cameras are good if they are visible. We have a bright purple one on our driveway so no mistaking that the house is under surveillance.
-
That's a good idea. I would be happy to go to a Facebook page and have a look if it was a national one. And it is not "hey Presto" as you put it Ceilidh. Very rarely do we get our exhibitor numbers before a show. I pick up my number and catalogue at the grounds so I can't work out where I am in the group before hand even if I wanted to. I put in a SAE but normally it just comes back to me empty and sealed, sometimes with just 'entries received'. I am happy to know that my entry got there but would also be interested in a breed break up. Like I said, even the public may appreciate this.

It would be a great idea if there was one website you could go to (even a day or two before a show) to have a look at all the breed entries. I too find other states entry numbers interesting. It would also be good for the public to be able to see if a breed they were interested in had a large entry at a certain show so they could go along and have a look. I know there were a few times before I started showing that I would go along only to see one or two of the breed I was looking at only to be told if I had been there the week before for the breed specialist I would have seen over 20.
