  1. Looks like a long haired shepherd x to me
  2. I'm only just learning about showing this last year so I am happy to take advice from people more experienced than me.
  3. I'm sorry too Erin I have two very sick kids here who couldn't be without their Mum this morning. I hope the girls had a great day.
  4. My last rescue I couldn't bond with. I tried everything, obedience, one on one time with me, long bush walks together, buying him lots of toys to try and find one he was interested in playing with with me....but nothing worked. In the 18 months we had him he only let me cuddle him once and I sat for over an hour scared to move knowing this was a once off. After the heart breaking decision to find him a new home we found the perfect couple and as soon as they met him he ran up and licked the guys face and let him put his arms around him. I felt rejected and like I had failed him that night but the next morning I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. He had found his true home and I was just someone who looked after him for a while.
  5. Congratulations, What a great day!!
  6. I think science has a lot to do with it. There are so many more tests they can perform now on our animals and now know how to treat them. I think there are also a lot more preservitives and additives these days that our bodies and our dogs aren't used to. I grew up with only purebred dogs and they all lived to very ripe old ages with supermarket dog food and scrapes and minimal vet care.
  7. But people have to want to have a well mannered dog. I am amazed how many people don't have basic manners with other people, how do you get them to teach manners to their dog if they don't have any themselves? I know many, many people whose dogs have never had any training and they couldn't care less. Maybe if being a member of your local dog club came with a huge incentive in discounts on registration they might be more inclined to do at least basic training with their pets.
  8. I think it's a great idea. I remember watching a show on animal planet years ago about all the different purebred breeds, how to look after them , what they were bred for, how easy/difficult they were to look after, what health concerns they had. It was done in a fun and interesting way.
  9. We need to teach people basic manners around dogs first. When we got Archer, my Golden Retriever Puppy, I took him to my son's school to socialise him. The teacher was great, we sat outside the classroom on a bench and the children were told to quietly come outside and sit in front of me. They asked lots of questions and then their teacher asked them to form a line if they wanted to pat the puppy. Only two children didn't want to pat the fluff ball, but I was amazed how many of the kids didn't have any pets and were nervous about the right way to pat him. At my daughter's kindy they had a lady from the RSPCA come out and talk to them about the right way to pat a dog and what to do if they see a dog they don't know. We need to educate people first on how to have good manners. On another note I don't know how you get people to teach their dogs to have manners when a lot of people just see them as 'that pet in the yard'. Those of us who have indoor dogs and take our dogs to social events it seems only natural to have a well behaved dog but some dogs never see outside their fence line and only meet people coming to the house.
  10. The photos of them always look different. It can get a little hard picking similarities between the dogs. Some have a broad head with short ears, some long. Some have a shorter muzzle some are much longer. Some have short legs, some are taller. But they're not my idea of a nice looking dog.
  11. There was the cutest white Akita at the Caboolture show on the weekend. It had those gorgeous lopsided puppy ears As others have said the next show at Durack is on the 4th. Here is a link to Durack info http://www.dogsqueensland.org.au/Durack-Info.aspx If there is a specific breed you are interested in have a look what ring they will be in on the day. Breeds are shown in alphabetical order so if you like a breed starting with A go to that ring first so you don't miss them.
  12. I have the same TV and I turned mine starting tone off because my kids would come running when they heard me turn on the TV and I was trying to be sneaky and watch it by myself. You have to go into the system menu with the remote and it was called something like start up tone, then you just turn it off. My dogs only used to cock their head to the side when they heard it.
  13. Having a beautiful day and then as soon as the Goldens go in it pours and then as soon as the best of breed is awarded it has stopped (happened to me on sat night ) Having packed the car the night before and then double checked in the morning, only to arrive at the show and realise you have forgotten the crate
  14. On my breeders recommendation and my own research I changed my Golden over to adult at 3 months with the dry food and kept up a good puppy can every second day till he was about 5 months (a couple of weeks ago). I want a slower growth from my puppy to help with his hips and adult food is lower in calories. There are a lot of differing opinions on diet and I think it really is an individual decision what you feed your dog.
  15. I'll see if I can make it. Abby hasn't met Archer yet
  16. Meow :D That's what I thought when I read it
  17. I'm so sorry for your loss. The same happened to me 2 1/2 years ago. My Golden, Ronin, wasn't looking himself. Just not happy. He went and sat at the back of the car and refused to move. I took him to the vet and she felt a mass, after an xray we too found a huge tumor and a many little ones. We had to say goodbye so suddenly I was so angry, he was my heart dog too. The pain never goes away completely, it just eases a little. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
  18. The lady who taught me to groom dogs adopted one from the pound that was unfortunately mistreated when he was younger, he had a bit of brain damage and used to run around with his tongue hanging out. He was the best little dog and ruled the roost. Such a clown. He also suffered from the heat and had to be clipped off in summer. They are definitely on my "to own one day" list.
  19. Those Labs don't look purebred at all. I think their heads are all wrong. I love the different pointer colours.
  20. Re: Fixing the lawn. The best thing to do is fill the holes in with dirt and go to your local turf farm or Bunning's and get some rolls of turf, cut them to size and water every arvo. The patches should take in about 2 weeks. They will be soggy so you will have to try and keep your boy away from them for at least a week while they harden up. If your not sure what sort of grass it is take a photo or a sample with you.
  21. I have the Territory. I have the AWD and it is fine around our property, we have lots of hills and it's a bit rocky, but I wouldn't call it an off roader. They're good at the beach too. They have heaps of space and are soooo comfy to drive. We towed a huge 6 x 3m trailer from Brisbane to Sydney with no trouble at all. The biggest downfall is the cost of fuel. I don't do city driving and I still average around 12.9L/100kms. When we towed to Sydney we were using 22L/100kms They were supposed to bring out the diesel this year but that hasn't happened. My lease is coming up and thought I adore my Territory I can't keep spending $140 per week on fuel just to take my kids to and from school. I'll be interested in what others suggest to you.
  22. Here are some of my favs Archer's first time at the beach Daisy's first day home Archer 9 weeks I love this one of Daisy
  23. I get all the parked car jokes and she must have run into a wall to my Shih Tzu. When she is in her long winter coat I get asked if she is a mop with a face. Most of my family and friends think she is the ugliest dog they've ever seen. To me she is perfect
  24. My old Golden ate a whole container of nappy san when he was a pup. His teeth were so white I could see him in the dark for a week :D
