  1. I use Furkids at Greenbank as my vet. They are fantastic. They mainly deal with breeders and showies and have very reasonable rates. I haven't had a dog desexed there so don't know the price but just give them a call for a quote. Their details are Furkids Veterinary Surgery 694 Middle Road, Greenbank QLD 4124 (07) 3200 0498
  2. The main difference that really stands out to me is their faces. The King charles has a really squished in face. A lot of people used to book in their dogs to be groomed and used to say "I have a king Charles". Most of the time it was a cav, until one day I nearly dropped from shock when a lady walked in with a king charles. It was gorgeous and it also seemed a lot more reserved than the outgoings cavs I normally did.
  3. There are handling classes run at Durack on Thursday nights at 6.30pm. You can just turn up, no need to book. The cost is $3. There are quite a lot of saints that come for training. If she is on main register and your breeder thinks she has a shot in the ring, give it a go. It is great fun
  4. No way I would be giving up 50%. Especially with the cost of petrol getting there and the maintenance on your equipment etc.
  5. When I moved to QLD from Sydney I was renting and didn't want a salon from home again. I approached the local vet and used to groom from their five surgeries in my area until they asked me to open a shop in their new vet hospital. They had a hydrobath in every surgery but one (I put my one in there). I just brought along my stand dryer and clippers/blades/scissors/shampoos etc. I charged the clients direct and gave 10% to the vet. I also booked all the appointments myself and just told them when I would be there. They usually just had a table for me out of the way or in one of the rooms they weren't using. They were happy to have someone with experience and another service to offer their clients. It is a great low cost way to start out if you can find a good vet.
  6. My kids try and stack each other. One is on all fours while another one stands behind and holds up the others chin and pretends to hold out their 'tail'. While loudly saying "stand up, good boy". They are going to make great junior handlers one day!
  7. I am so so sorry for your loss. How devastating. RIP Brock
  8. I have a pair of Osters, Andis 2 speed and two pairs of Wahl 2 speeds and I love my Wahls. I had surgery as well for nerve damage from grooming and the only clippers I can still use are my wahl's. I've had my current pair for about 8 years.
  9. PF - I have three children under 7 and we got Daisy when my son was 2 and my daughter only a couple of weeks old. They are very strong little dogs but as with any puppy children should always be supervised when playing with them. Are they from a registered breeder? If not I would suggest looking elsewhere. If you can have a look at both parents (not always possible to see dad too). Look closely at their faces especially their eyes. Make sure they look clear and healthy. Good Luck. And you have to come and post photos for us ;)
  10. I had a Shepherd X Kelpie who broke two vertebrae in his back when he was about 12 months old when our flatmates rotti fell on him when they were playing. His spine ended up fusing and he was on pred for about four years. The side effects were worth the vast improvement in quality of life. He would have had to be PTS otherwise. Good Luck, I hope it makes a difference for you.
  11. Congratulations they are adorable. Best of luck with them.
  12. Bruno is such a stunner I love your photos and can't wait to see more. Congratulations on the new addition
  13. I'm confused, which breed are you talking about? They sound great whatever they are
  14. I would have to disagree. I personally think they can smell stronger than other breeds, that's MY opinion. It says you are in Qld, is that right? The breeder I would have to recommend for Shih Tzu's is Robyn Hawke from Tzutique http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/member.asp?name=TZUTIQUE They are beautiful dogs.
  15. I always thought the Miniature Fox Terrier was a registered breed but it isn't. Sorry. I have just had a look and they have their own registry. The website claims there are similarities between the Tenterfield and the mini foxie but that they are different breeds. Wow learn something new every day.
  16. I have three kids aged 2-7 and I have a Shih Tzu and two Golden Retrievers. I would recommend both any day, but the Goldens shed and are larger than a lab. I think a Shih Tzu would be perfect. Daisy is nearly 6 years old and has been an awesome companion for my kids. She is very gentle, fun to dress up and put bows in her hair for my girls and will play ball with my son till he is tired from throwing the ball to her. She doesn't shed or smell (I had a cocker and found them to have a very distinctive funk). From a good breeder a Shih Tzu is a great family dog.
  17. Miniature Fox Terriers originated in Australia. Even though it came from english breeds the breed was developed in Aus.
  18. Don't forget to pop into the golden thread with lots of photos! ;) I hope everything goes well for you.
  19. Come into the golden thread, we'll help you out. :D My Aria is 3 1/2 months old and she is from a lovely lady named Heather Morrison from Kaparla in Tasmania. I don't think she has any puppies at the moment but is lovely to talk to so just give her a call. We have just had our national Golden Retriever dog show in Brisbane and a lot of the breeders were here for it. It only finished last Friday and because of the ash cloud and the coast road being closed it took a lot of people a long time to get home. Maybe that's why you haven't had a reply yet. There is no problem getting a dog from interstate if you go to a good breeder. Archer came from Sydney and like I said Aria came from Tassie. If you have any questions please feel free to PM me. :D
  20. I like smaller nail clippers as they are easier to hold and use. The large ones are used for dogs with large thick nails, like mastiffs e.t.c So the surface of each blade is larger and you don't get a clean cut like with a smaller pair. If you are cutting schnauzer nails I recommend you get a small pair. Is it cost effective to send them back and try to get an exchange? I can't even remember where I got my pair from but they were around $15 and I have had them for nearly 15 years.
  21. My dad lives in a small apartment in Manly with his westie x and he has adapted just fine after being brought up in a large house (the dog and my Dad ). He walks Scottie a couple of times a day down by the beach. The problem is he is a chef and sometimes works long hours so has to come home in the afternoon to take him out. Scottie is also a barker so my Dad had to put in a lot of retraining to stop him barking at everything. My Mum moved to an apartment in Wahroonga and there is a German Shepherd in her block a few levels up. She says it gets walked a lot and never hears a peep out of it. So I guess it is possible to have any size breed in an apartment if your willing to put the time in to take them out and about a lot.
  22. I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't see enough of this beautiful breed in the show ring and to loose such a star is a dreadful shame.
  23. Definitely cuteness overload!! Good Luck with him, he looks adorable.
