  1. My kelpies would react the same as they don't like "in your face" bouncy dogs, they tend to feel intimidated by these types of dog.
  2. Try Julija Kinghorn of Southern Cross Animal Stars, she is based in Rowville, qualified as animal behaviourist. Google her website for contact details.
  3. I know Prestige is the distributor as I deal with them and carry Ziwipeak cans and treats in my store. I have just been through their complete 2010/11 catalogue and Ziwipeak is no longer listed as one of their products, I will check what is happening with it when I see the Prestige sales rep.
  4. My goodness! I hope you NEVER reach that level of food I think you have misread the feeding guide somewhere as that would be 1kg - 1.25kg of food per day. Depending on the puppy's age the feed guide for a 14kg puppy is as follows: 3 -4 months - approx 375g per day split into 3 meals per day so only 125g per feed 5 -7 months - approx 280g per day split into 2 -3 meals per day 8- 12 months - approx 215g per day Of course if you are adding other foods to puppy's diet then you need to cut the above back. I really encourage people to use these feeding guides as just that, a starting guide, each puppy is different, some will need more food than others etc, its far better to monitor your puppy's weight and keep a close eye on things like feeling but not seeing ribs, a waistline etc and then adjusting the food accordingly. :p You will find that Artemis lists the dog's weight in lbs, I feed about the same as any other dry food if I go by their recommended amounts, but I do find need to actually feed less due to the quality of the food. Ziwipeak don't make a dry, only cans or air dried meat (haven't seen this in Aust though). Eagle Pack have been taken over by "Wellness" so hard to say if this will stay the same, also there distribution is very erratic.
  5. Couldn't of said it better myself, Aussie terriers are so much fun to have around, I would never ever be without one now. They are so intelligent, cheeky, funny, so full of personality. They really like to think for themselves, but you have to make sure they understand that you are the pack leader, or they will quickly take over the house hold. They are so loyal to their family & love being with their people & they seem to love kids. They never chew or destroy things that they know their not allowed to touch, but they get great pleasure in deboweling their soft toys. :D They love getting about half an hour walk a day, but are equally happy with a game of fetch, however my dogs favourite thing to do is to go for a walk down to our dam, & go for a swim. I haven't had any problems with mice, since I've owned Aussies, they a are fantastic at hunting vermin. They really do have the easy goiing fun loving Aussie spirit, & it is such a shame more people don't own them. My Aussie bitch whelped her first litter of 8 pups last Wednesday, & I know we are going to have so much fun raising them. :p Nicole Congrats on the litter, must post some photos.
  6. Aussie terriers are such fun to have around, real characters, fun loving, they have their play time when they go ballistic for 15 minutes but then lay down and collapse. Very smart and quick to learn but often it is "talk to the paw" as they are easily distracted. They just love to be part of the family. Not destructive, don't dig or chew things that aren't allowed. Bark when someone comes to the house or when excited in play but otherwise very quiet. Great with kids and not at all nippy. Fine with the cat (but then you don't argue with him, they learn that very quickly!!) Pet grooming is easy, just run a comb through once or twice a week, for showing there are different trains of thought but basically trim feet and tail and strip topline. After having dobes and kelpies with more serious attitudes, Aussies are just joy. Real Aussie spirit, just want to have fun!
  7. Pet 'N' The Dog at beaconsfield can have it for you Wednesday if you let them know by Monday afternoon what you want.
  8. Where abouts are you? Anywhere near Beaconsfield?
  9. My kelpies looked like wombats on Advance and took ages to get the weight back off them, although I know a number of people who swear by it. Eagle Pack is good, bit of problem with short use by dates for a while but I am told that this has been remedied by more frequent importing.
  10. I grew up in suburbia, and crossbreeds were given away as they were accidental matings and unwanted mongrels, people wanted pure breeds. Pet shops sold just meat and accessories, saw the occassional kitten in pet shops but rarely dogs. Most pets were gained through family and friends. No such thing as "breeding for profit", "designer dogs" or "puppy farms". My first pedigreed dog was a dobe with excellent lineage that cost me $80, that was in the 70's. Seemed less problems with dogs, probably due to kids actually being told to get outside and play, so the dogs had the company and play time they need. I used to get home from school and be out with my animals (counted 20 at one stage) until mum called for dinner.
  11. I felt the same but didn't want to say anything in case it was just me! I was telling my best friend last night how much it has changed and I have attended lots of them, even the very first one at the old Exhibition Buildings. I would be surprised if it runs next year- don't get me wrong the volunteers all do a great job and it is very hard work being there all three days- but the trade stands each year just keep on dwindling. I was happy to grab some Aussiedog spare parts and to see that Studio Sebastian was back but we went back in to try to find Aussie Pet Health Treats and they were a no-show, listed on the info but MIA! I heard that Aussie Pet have gone down the gurgler, just happened very recently.
  12. I love Ezydog, for my Aussies they fit beautifully. Puppia are great on pugs too.
  13. The breed stands are undercover in the courseway, breeders, show people and other dog sports involved.
  14. I thought they said that it was a case of "hoarding" not neccessarily puppy farming, obviously just doesn't part with the dogs but then lets them fend for themselves.
  15. Unfortunately, go and volunteer at a shelter eg RSPCA, VAAT, and see how many are surrender dogs. Often many are not due to behaviour issues but because people can't be bother looking after their pet when they have health problems, don't want to take them when they move or just had a baby so don't want the pet anymore (I think this one tops the lot, especially when they have been family members for 8 to 10 years!!!!) When I have spoken to people wanting to get rid of their pets due to having a baby I ask if they will get rid of the first child when they have a second one.
  16. I have had quite a few customers buy them and have had good results, they take control of the shoulders by having the lead attachment loop at the front instead of between the shoulder blades, so the dog can't lean into it pull like they do with conventional harnesses. If they pull the shoulders get turned back towards you, similar principle to a halti / gentle leader and the like. I am at Beaconsfield.
  17. What size crate do you have for him? My Aussies were both flying in and out of their doggy door by 9 - 10 weeks of age, they are a clever little dog that catch on very quickly, usually only need to put them through the door a few times before they are going it alone. Mine are crate trained for showing but will quite often take themselves off to their crates if they want "alone" time. I have mine set up that when we go out they are confined to our bedroom that has the doggie door to outside, the few accidents as pups have usually been from excitement when we come home.
  18. Iams ones aren't too bad. Supercoat have discontinued theirs at this stage, waiting to hear further from suppliers on whether they will bring them back or not. 4x2's & 2x2's are readily available, they are a good basic biscuit. Black Dog have bone shaped ones that come in different flavours eg charcoal, garlic, beef, liver, vanilla, cheese.
  19. I feed 2 meals a day, found that on one meal my kelpies got too thin, they have dry in morning and Ecopet roll at night, I feel that this gives them carbohydrate for energy during the day to burn off. Also, when I have fed dry at night they will be up all night chasing anything that moves!
  20. Great idea, especially for minority breeds that find it difficult to get big points at shows (can take years for some to even get near the grand).
  21. I have had dobes, then kelpies for 25 years, I have gone to Australian Terriers and couldn't be happier with them. Very smart, don't bark unless warning you of someone coming, playful but coach potatoes when you want them to be, with obedience they know what you want them to do but it can be a matter of "talk to the paw" if they see something that interests them (like most terriers!).
  22. These are Red Dingo tags, they have quite a number of designs and just released some new ones, good pet stores or vets should have them. You put in an order form at place of purchase and the tag is mailed out to you (usually about 5 working days). Prices usually about $14 to $18 depending on size.
