  1. I have spent $1,000's on my last dog and cat, the cat survived the dog was only a pup. I have since researched thoroughly all the popular pet insurance companies, and the best value for $ and coverage was Pet Insurance Australia (PIA). I have now insured my cat with them for $13 a month for comprehensive insurance. We were told by others the company would never insure her because of her last illness, Panleukapena (cat form of dog parvo), but they did. Luckily it leaves no ongoing problems that will be related to it. I agree no insurance company will cover an existing illness. But if anything else needs to be covered then thats fine. Good Luck its a reassuring thing to have. I will definately be covering my next pup.
  2. I agree, when a partnered friend passes its so hard on the one left. My pup passed away earlier this month, she got on famously with our cat and they always played together, and slept together. Now the dog has gone, my cat is wondering around lost, she has become more affectionate with us but I see it as a sign she is missing the pup. We will be getting another pup later this year, so she can have another playmate. I too would go with a female pup, I'd aim for one 6mths and under, young enough not to cause dominance issues and old enough to pick up on the pack rule. Good Luck and I am sorry for your losses.
  3. I was from the uninformed group. Until last year (I'm 48) I had no idea whats so ever what went on behind the doors of pet shops. I honestly thought people had bred their dogs and handed them over making it easier for anyone to get a breed they wanted. I also thought it was lovely to see the puppies in the window and ooh and ahh over them, wishing I could afford to buy one myself.... But now I am informed and I do know whats happening in these stores and what they do. I would never buy a puppy from them, or anything else. I'd rather buy online or go to Kmarts for my pet supplies. So yes there are a lot of those that are still uninformed....
  4. Can I join the impatient puppy waiting club? After losing our beloved pup in early January this year, and after much talking we have decided to get another dog, but not until later this year. We need to do some renovations on our house and yard before we pick a breeder and pup. We have picked a breed though, a French Bulldog. So hopefully when the time comes there is a gorgeous little girl for us. My daughters even named her Zoe. So we are researching the breed, awwwing over photo's and wishing over You Tube videos... :D Just need the house and yard to be ready asap.....like now!!! then we can start looking at available pups... :D I hope its soon....
  5. Do you know what's in those??? They are full of crap, I wouldn't feed those to my dogs. They were recommended to me by my dogs breeder....so I don't consider them crap.
  6. Anyone, vet or pound can see if a dog male or female is desexed as they have a tattoo placed on the ear. They also tattoo the other ear if it is microchipped, but not every vet does this. Our vet does, and its great when you only have to look to know for sure. Lynn tattoo's fade and can't be seen and I have never heard of a vet putting another tattoo in the ear when a dog is microchipped. All my dogs are microchipped and they don't have a tattoo saying so, nor would I allow them to do so. When my cat was microchipped under sedation for an op they tattooed her in the opposite ear to the one she got for her de-sexing. They do it for both cats and dogs. I had a dog that was tattooed and 8 yrs later it was still visible, so they don't fade at least the one our vet did didn't.
  7. For dog biscuits I like the Supercoat ones, but have been unable to get them for a while. We ended up on Luv Dog Biscuits. For training treats, you can't go past Smacko's.....excellent.
  8. Thats easy the secret dog fairy comes and drops off a load every now and again to make all those dogs, cats and of course horses happy Its like my cupboard with all the plastic tupperware containers....its a tardis in there, there's millions of them and I can't remember seeing half of them, plus most have no lids that fit. To this day I still have no idea why the plastic container fairy keeps dumping them in my cupboard without the lids

  10. After going to 2 different vets with horrific results, one pet died a slow death, the other managed to survive. I found a vet clinic that I would never turn away from... The clinic is beautifully clean and bright. The staff are lovely and talk to you and your pet. Everyone is as concerned about your pet as you are. They are willing to explain everything to you. If an animal has to stay in overnight and needs constant checking, they take the animal home and care for it there. They ring constantly at least every day or if there is any change in your pets illness. They make you feel part of the big family. Our last pet was PTS and we got a lovely sympathy card from them signed by all the staff. It was so lovely to know they cared so much. Lynn
  11. How is this going to get unwanted strays down in numbers?? Any captured/desexed dog could be a repeat offender time and time again. It's not his balls that he uses to escape with Agreed, silly idea. I meant keeping these undesexed dogs from roaming and mating, making more unwanted dogs/puppies ending up in the pound or rescue centres Its a great idea. If you don't plan on mating your dog then there's no reason not to desex it.
  12. What a great idea, its one way to get the unwanted strays down in numbers. I wish all councils did it. Lynn
  13. Let's hope this is the way of the future and all the pet stores that sell back yard bred animals get phased out of selling them. I wish they did it here in SA, but unfortunately pet shops and BYB go hand in hand on the money trail.
  14. Fantastic news. Maybe this time they will be more inclined to take care of their dog....as he's costing them a fortune I bet they blame the dog not themselves for him getting out. Well done.
  15. You might have to scroll through all the pages to find it. I had to do that for the breed I wanted.
  16. Maybe explain to the neighbors that your dog doesn't like cats, and their kitten was under the bushes near the fence. It might be a wake up call for them to keep it inside...maybe not. But at least you warned them, and you can't be blamed if something terrible happens.....I hope it never does.
  17. Poor thing :D Have the council been to collect him yet? I have had a run in with a woman that used to allow her dog off the lead to walk him round the streets....because she knew the dog catcher she didn't bat an eye lid.....I must have run the council office 3-4 times complaining about it. I even spoke to her telling her it was illegal to walk her dog without a lead, she just said "Yeah I know...." Now she only walks her dog on a lead when she walks past my house, but when she gets over to the other side of the town she takes it off, as my husband has seen her. I keep looking out for her, but haven't caught her yet....one day I will she got warnings at first then the last two times she got fines I hate people who think the world evolves around them....
  18. ~tj~ Thats not fair.... you know me, but who are you? ;) Need more info But anyway lol PS my DD is getting her two females desexed.....$190 each.....
  19. I want a French Bulldog....price between $2000 and $3000, I can't afford it now, but as I would love one I am saving up to get a pup I really want. Is it worth it? Yes of course it is. I think maybe you might have to do more research on this breed and what it is you really want. $2,500 is not too expensive for a rare breed, and price was one of the things I found out about first with the Frenchies. As far as I know they are a working breed....right? Would they even be happy living with a family as a guard dog? Unless they are exercised or worked....
  20. What about placing the pup in the lounge inside a baby's playpen with their bed inside it. This way she can see the older dogs, but not interfere with them. Though I would go with the PP and just let them decide the pack order. The puppy is lonely and may get a nip if it goes to far, but this is all only natural. Good Luck

  22. I just wanted to say that when they come home, pugs have a sore throat and the hoarse rasping cough and bark/noise you hear is nothing to worry about. It can last up to a week, and can be frightening when you don't expect it. The cause of it is the tube that goes down their throat inflames the vocal chords and throat, making them sound terrible. Forget about the Elizabethan collar, they can restrict breathing. Pugs cannot reach their stomachs at all, so no chance in hell of damaging the stitches. Hope this helps.
  23. I have had over the years: Faith Tara Jessie Annie Cindy My next female will be Zoe. Lynn
  24. Hi, We weren't going to get another dog at all after losing our last one, but not having a dog in the house was horrible, the silence was deafening....so we decided to get another dog... After having 2 Aussie Bulldogs, we decided to stay with the bulldog character, as we love that the most. This narrowed our list down to 4: British Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug and Boston Terrier.....then we broke them up even further with pro's and con's. Boston Terrier: Lap dog, they don't follow the terrier character of digging and yapping, loved the over sized attitude of them, but with little grandchildren I was worried about their delicacy in stature. Pug: I am allergic to this breed. They shed a tremendous amount of hair, so it meant being on allergic tablets for life, though they are a robust dog and love kids, the eyes worried me. British Bulldog: They are the biggest breed of my list, they weigh a ton and if they can't jump into the car or out it means carrying it :D they have the most health problems, their temperament is perfect for us and they love kids. But maybe too wide and heavy for our house. French Bulldog: Same size as our cat. They have less health problems, they love kids, are not yappy, they don't shed as much as most short haired dogs, they like some exercise, but aren't bothered if you don't....so perfect for us. So out of the 4 we have chosen the French Bulldog. Another consideration was we have an almost 4yr old cat that loves playing with dogs her size, but will not go near dogs bigger than her. The French Bulldog fitted in with this as well. We are not an active family, much like the Frenchie, we get bursts of energy and sometimes like to sit around and be couch potatoes. It just seemed like the Frenchie was the perfect dog with the perfect temperament for us. I hope it helps, but you have to consider: Whose in your family? Who visits a lot? Kids and elderly people. What other animals you have? The activity level of your family? (not just you, as you might not be always available) The size of your house and garden? How much time your willing to put in for grooming and exercise? Is everyone going to pitch in or will it be just you? Do you have somewhere the dog can stay if you need to be away for a while? Is the breeds temperament suited to your family? Is the dog going to be too big for you to control? I think thats about it, well its all what we thought of when writing out our list and then culling it. Lynn
