Rspca Proposals For A Mandatory Code For Puppy Farmers.
dandybrush replied to minky's topic in In The News
i only skimmed it, but i agree with some of the points/changes/legalities, however I also think no one should be posting anyones address online i think exporting ideas/plans will make it harder for overseas pple to purchase our dogs as we wont want the hassle of selling overseas anymore I think regular households should only receive desexed pups but knowing nothing about showing, maybe there should be a provision for "show homes"? I do think some of the points are a step in the right direction for eg the license for breeding, this will cull out BYB's and some mills who dont want to follow those rules -
very cool pics those dogs look like they love it

something you can work on at home or in any situation when you see your dog getting overly excited (as others have said high excitement leads to aggression) kneel down put your dog between your knees in a sit facing the same way as you and clasp your fingers over her chest, and just hold her till she calms down, when you can tilt her chin up without much pressure she is calm. and then release her, soon as she gets overly excited again repeat. from what i have been taught (correct me if im wrong) but dogs do not know how to self settle this is what i did to teach my boy to settle and even now in the dog park (which i vist occassionally but not always) i will pull him aside and wait for him to calm down then release him again (he is quite calm now compared to the other nutcases in the dog park) you have a beautifull looking girl and like others have said it could have been the body language of the other dog that actually started the whole shemozzle good luck

What Is Your Dogs Resting Heart Rate?
dandybrush replied to OSoSwift's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i dont know my dogs resting rate but last time we went to the vet they said he was the equivalent of a human marathon runner, must have been very slow he is a koolie x bc and was 1.5yrs old at the time -
I was in the IGA at carindale on friday and they had small polar fleece for i think it was $3.99 prob only 1m x 1m i remember thinking they were a bit small...but now im thinking of going bak and grabbing them as raz has put holes in his current one and no erny i havent noticed any static like what you describe

wow reading that i think my dog must be dominant too then lol, he walks through doors first, because i dont make him wait...when i do he waits, he barks during play cause he is having fun (i think) he stares at me lol when its walk time, i can no longer forget what time of the day it is, He needs his exercise and he knows what time its due lol I think if your dog does what you want/require of it then it is perfectly trained to your situation, if you think something needs work, then fix it, dont worry about the dominance of the dog (thats my belief anyway)

my boy wears his collar all the time, his head can slip out easily if he pulls backwards, its too lose what have you heard thats so bad about collars? at the park once i saw a bullmastif cross, pick up my boy by his collar and try to hump him, i was on my way over to make him let go but the dog let go, so i can see how in that case it can be bad... what are these break away collars you mention?

apparently a dog can get it from too much exercise as a puppy they say fatigue plays a big factor I know a 6 year old dog who has just been diagnosed with this, and am now concerned (I know my boy is only 2) as when my boy was a baby we used to play for hours at the dog park...he was often buggered does anyone know anything about this? if i can prevent it happening to raz with supplements etc. (i am a major worry wart over my baby) your opinions and thoughts would be appreciated

simply stunning my ex horse used to look at me like that, they just watch you everywhere you go, love it
-
I would say 1. recall - yes i worked on it..but if something is more exciting...then i still cant get him to come back 2. crate training - no i didnt not till now and he is nearly 2 definately an important skill for the dog to have in any situation, for dogs who need regular grooming..so they dont stress when locked up at the groomers, when dogs have to go to the vets, will decrease stress and help with recovery, at competitions or days out or at home when they get to exuberant with the kids, I am definatley wishing he was fully crate trained as a pup now

regarding the puppy mills I think they need to be policed better and i also think that the minimun standard of care has to be higher eg. now (from what i have been told) the dogs just need room to stand up turn around and sit down, what if the rule changed to they have to have access to grass for a minimum of 6 hours per day...that would definately make the puppy mills a nicer place..if that and other rules were enforced.

yes raz doesnt use his kennel much, would rather lie else where, but i have found him in there when its raining so he does use it when he needs it
-
I signed it, what i got from the site was that they just want enough signatures then they will go to the government to have the laws regulating the conditions etc. tightened. which is what i believe needs to happen for anything to change
-
I really think this is a hard one to fix...I reckon they need to make the lowest standard of care of dogs higher than it is now and they do need to hire honest pple to police and enforce these standards. I also think maybe even pet shops should be banned from selling pets that do not come from animal shelters or registered breeders until stronger rules and penalties apply its just going to continue as it is

Teaching A Dog To Play?
dandybrush replied to alexandrite's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
thats an awesome idea poor raz i've been a bit slack ill try to make him up some things for him next week -
I do believe in "its meant to be" i came across my pup when i wasnt even lookign for a dog, researched the breed, decided i could handle it and walla my parents also came across their pups the day their other dog died...so it was a tough decision but they were meant to be So if you like a few maybe when the time is right go to a few breeders and check out their litters, if you just "have" to have one then...its meant to be of course make sure you can handle the breed and give it what it needs/wants

i got one of the crates lol

i buy bags of them and freeze them so they always have to defrost when i give them to my boy

What Breeds Actually Fall Under Bsl?
dandybrush replied to PrincessCharming's topic in General Dog Discussion
I also agree that little dogs are allowed to get away with too much they are still dogs and a bite is a bite
