Umm... not as often. Emmy's breeder doesn't have a computer so everything is done by snail mail. I actually sent her a letter with photos and copies of Emmy's graduations certificates today We try to talk on the phone once every month but both of us are sooo busy. Would be easier if she had a computer..

Emmy, my Jap Spitz, was a real bitch to house train... but she eventually got there (still, not 100% confident that she is now.. but no mistake in the house for about a month now.. so fingers cross). We take her out every meal, when she wakes up and after play... we stand outside for 20 minutes and she won't do anything, when we got back inside, we go straight outside again about 5 seconds after going into the house. It's like, going into the house reminds her that she needs to do her business. Once she got outside, we praise her like crazy and give her treat, cuddles and make sure it was the best damn thing she has ever done. It's annoying to wait outside (especially in winter and it's raining), but you just got to do it. Just got to be consistence about it. We taught her how to pee on command too now. I was told that puppies don't have full control of their bladder till they are 6 months... some dogs pick up toilet train faster than others though. My boy picked it up pretty much straight away.

Charlie has a rare illness (bone vanishing disease) and slight HD (this is due to the bone vanishing disease). I put that has bone problem. Emmy is 100% healthy

Yeah, i know a few of these people too. I get funny looks and comments when i tell people I take my dogs to obedience. It's cause I have small dogs and they don't think it's necessary to train them.

awww... Charlie just ignores them. He doesn't wait... he just does his own thing, and they just join him. Charlie and Emmy sometimes double team helping puppies be more confident.. Charlie calms them down, and when the puppy gets some confident, Emmy steps in in to play with the puppies.. doing play bow, playing chasing and tug a war (because Charlie doesn't play like that). I've seen this happened with my cousin's little puppy, a random Japanese Spitz puppy we met at the park and my friends new Poodle. Very cool to watch.

I spend way to much time with my two.. but I love watching them and observe them with other dogs, people and animals. What I notice about my boy is that he is really good calming other dogs down. All dogs like him, although he can snob them off :D This morning, there was a dog that escape the yard... he/she was very skittish around the boyfriend and I, and wouldn't go near Emmy (she was barking at the other dog because it was so skittish and Emmy was telling the dog to chill?).. but the dog would follow Charlie. So we used Charlie to get close to he/she to check the tag and then walked the dog home :D We never once touched the other dog (aside from quickly checking the collar).. we didn't even have the chance to clip the spare collar on he/she because he/she slipped out of my grip and is really really quick and skittish. But, he/she would happily follow Charlie. The other day at the park, Charlie and I were having our alone time... we bumped into a few dogs, Charlie says hello to them and kept going. There was this 6 months old puppy.. very timid towards other dogs, and as we were walking pass Charlie ignored it and went to sniff at a patch of grass.. the pup walked slowly to Charlie and slowly sniffed Charlie, Charlie just continued doing what he was doing.. next thing I knew, the 2 dogs were exploring together and sorta playing with each other (the puppy even did a play bow to Charlie.. who return gave it a 'wtf' look) other dogs came by, and Charlie will say hello to it, and I think the puppy watched how relaxed Charlie was meeting other dogs, the puppy itself relaxed. The owner of the puppy, asked if we could exchange email address and then organise a "play" date with Charlie. The puppy did look like he was having a lot of fun exploring with Charlie Do you guys have a dog like this? He is my weapon when it comes to Emmy too. He is a huge help on socialising Emmy! He loves people and other dogs, so Emmy would watch him.. sees that he gets all the attention. Emmy (who's a diva) must be centre of attention, she will forget her problems and goes straight into the middle so people and other dogs so she can get all the attention :D

Some people just don't know better.

OMG... Charlie's sookiness comes from his Shih Tzu side!!! I have a Cav x Shih Tzu.. and he is such a sook, it's unbelievable how sooky he can get and till today he (he is over a year old now) still does cries and whinges. You should hear him cry when he feels like he isn't getting enough attention.. it as though the world is ending and it's the most saddest sound I've ever heard. We ignore him (and I call him Pathetic), once he calms down (and realise no one is paying attention to him) for about 5 minutes.. I call him over and give him a cuddle. And he is a very confident, secure and happy little fella... seriously, the best thing you can do for you pup is just ignore him. He is learning that if he keeps crying, that's how he is going to get your attention and you have to live with that for about 13+ years.. ? :D (Charlie has my boyfriend and his brother all trained with his crying!) When you take him outside to go toilet... just walk around the yard. If you're moving, he has to keep moving too... then when he realise that you're not paying attention to him, he will find something else to do.

Hi!! You must post up pics of your puppy (unofficial rule here on DOL ) As hard as this may sound, I would just ignore him. He is still a baby and doesn't feel settled in, so you have to give him a chance to do that. You babying him isn't helping in adjust into his new environment. With the crate.. put some toys and treats in there, put the crate where he can see you too.. so he knows you're around. There are a lot of info about how to crate train your pup if you search on DOL ... I know I haven't crate train my 2 properly so I can't really give you any pointers. I was lucky that my 2 like their crates and I only crate them when I really have too (like if we go camping or any outings).. I just wanted to make sure that my 2 are comfortable in a close crate (which they are :D ). Good luck.

Yep you should tell. If your dogs played with my dogs and has KC.. then i would like to have the heads up. I wouldn't blame you for anything, because stuff like this happens but it would prepare me in case my 2 gets it Hope your dog gets better soon

Maybe you can get the breeder to keep the puppy till your housemates have moved out... if it's just a week or two.

Awww... Happy anniversary/birthday to your hairies

If it was me.. I would leave it at the breeders. Dogs don't forget their owners and any bad habits they pick up, you can retrain him

I can't see cute puppies pics till I get home  But, with the biting issue... everyone has gone through it if they had a puppy. There are a lot of ways of distracting your puppies, just do a search on it on DOL With Emmy, what I found worked was... I give her a firm 'Uh huh' or 'Quit it'.. then I will ignore her for 5-10 seconds, till she calms down and shove a toy in her mouth or we have a quick game of fetch. But, she has no attention span so it was very easy for me to distract her with something else. I noticed that she gets more bitey when is she hungry or very tired.. so either I give her a little bit of food or put her in her crate (once i do that, she crashes). With Charlie... I did the same, but also squealing in pain makes him stop too. He will actually lick my hand where he nipped me.. he is a funny little one. He was nowhere near as bad as Emmy. He had a thing for ribbons, so when he gets really bitey... I gave him a ribbon to chew on and he was happy with that. Other things I did was, I gave them things to chew on... like a carrot, or a frozen wash cloth, their favorite was I got an old clean sock and i will fill it with either ice cubes or their dry food, tie the sock close and give it to them. They can play with that for hours (until they bite a hole in the sock and take the ice cubes or bikkies out). good luck!!

I agree, it's usually has to do with their diet Charlie can clear out the room if he eats to much grass... he gives those silent by deadly farts.
-
No to both. I've had DA and HA dogs in the past... it's just not a risk or chance we want to take. no matter how sweet, friendly and obedience they are at home.. they are always leashed and sometimes muzzled when we go outside.
-
I give a bone to my 2 everyday... whether it's chicken wings, chicken frame, chicken neck, turkey neck etc.. but it's their dinner. I was told to give Charlie bones everyday.
-
Nope.. water is always available for my two
-
it's illegal to sell puppies on and kitten on ebay
-
I don't know, have considered brushing his teeth? I don't think giving those treats everyday is good for a dog... have you consider giving him a carrot? not sure if they will clean his teeth, but it's healthier than raw hide stick

Did You Buy Your Puppy From A Less Than Reputable "breeder"?
W Sibs replied to PoppyDog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Charlie didn't even come for a breeder. He was an total accident. He has the best temperament a dog can have but has a very rare disease.
