peanut butter doesn't agree with my pup either. what kind of pup do you have? and pics please? i had a sooky pup too... it gets better, when they get more comfortable with their surroundings.

- what is the parvo status like in Brisbane? sorry, i have no idea.. i don't live in Brissy - is it safe to carry a pup around parks frequented by onlead dogs (for example the newfarm park ((not the dog park there but the giant park where all the bbq's are)) in brisbane)? well, i took my pup to the (non dog) park before his second vac. i realise that you get away bringing puppies to non dogs area, as long as they are still a pup and you are carrying them. - is it safe to walk the puppy on footpaths/sidewalks ? i did this with Charlie... but, i also know the area and know that not a lot of dogs are walked there. and, the people in my neighbourhood that has dogs really take care and look after their dogs. - where would you suggest taking the puppy to socialise it better? EVERYWHERE!! i take my pup to the supermarket, sport stadiums, car rides, visiting friend... they get use of the sounds, the busyness, people, other animals... he is a very well behave puppy now (yes, little bragging here.. LOL) - does a puppy need much contact with dogs in the 8-12 week period, or can they just observe the dogs around them without sniffing/touching them? umm.. as long as you know their dogs have been vaccinated. then it's fine. charlie was romping around with my dad's dogs from the day we got him. also, my friends bought their dogs over to play with charlie when i first got him too. - would it be too dangerous to let a puppy toilet on the grass in public? no. but, it's dangerous not to pick up their poop afterwards.. - is it safer to carry a puppy in your arms around during socialising, does it make a difference, reduce the chances of contracting a virus? i don't think it makes a difference... i let my pup wonder around because it gets to hot carrying him all the time.. for me and for him too.

aww.. what a cutie! charlie is not interested in kongs either... he likes ice cubes.. so i just freeze stuff in the ice and give it to him.
-
what a gorgeous blue eyes pup..
-
i sometimes give charlie frozen one... he has a thing for ice. it takes him longer to eat, and the cold with soothe the gum if the pup is teething.
-
your little boy is so cute!!! umm.. i don't know the area, but ring your vet and ask them? that's what i did.
-
throw some biscuits around the grass or yard, so he can go look for it. give him ice to chew, lick from (this will numb his gum)... (i freeze stuff inside the ice for my pup) i heard kong with treats inside are good (my pup doesn't like it for some reason..) give him a big bone before your partner goes to work.. can your partner go take the pup for a walk before work? how often does your partner play with the dog when your partner is home?
-
omg.. it's the most cutest sound ever it's the way of telling us they want to play and they are having a great time. older dogs barks and growl.. puppies squeaks.. LOL
-
KC - yes i do. better safe then sorry... (but we do take Charlie everywhere with us!) Heartworm - sentinal once a month. Lump - get it removed.
-
from the moment we got Charlie... we took him everywhere with us. supermarket trips, basketball/volleyball/netball games, pincics, friends and family houses, car rides and 2 minutes walks to the bus stop (in the morning when we walk my sister to her bus stop). he is very well behave, happy and confident little fella.. who likes meeting new people, play will with kids (even when they can get rough with him) and nothing scares him. he doesn't even react when other dogs bark at him... he gets curious with other dogs, but doesn't get excited when he see them either. he is still a puppy, so he is still more interested in playing with us then anything or anyone else.
-
be completely prepared and committed on the puppy.. even before you get the puppy!
-
zoomie puppy.. LOL my pup does this too... one minute he is fine, next he is going crazy.. afterwards, he has a drink of water, then comes to me to pick him to take him to bed.

hi, sounds like you have a very excitable puppy have you given her timeout if she starts biting? or cry out 'Ouch' loudly and and turn your back towards her and ignore her? that's what i do to my dog when he gets bitey. i let out a big Ouch, then my back at him and ignore him, even when he tries to come back. he will usually lick where he bit me... and gets sooky. with the jumping... shove her off and ignore her. don't look at her. don't say anything to her. no attention at all. when she is calm and nice... give her the biggest and happiest greeting. if you know that kids are going to be around, just put her on the leash and tell the kids they aren't allow to play her till she sits and is good. even when you have guest over and they are to go to the backyard, put her on the leash and tell them to ignore her, till she behaves. when she is calm again, give her a lot of attention, praise, pats and hugs. puppy or dogs don't like being ignored, so they will realise you will only play and give them attention when they are good and well behaved. hope that helps you some good luck.

sooo true... lol. sometimes puppies forget the reason why they are taken outside. if you have been outside for 15 minutes, let them go inside again.. and take them out about 30 seconds later. don't ever yell at the puppy for peeing in the house... it's not there fault. they have no control of their bladder. training puppy pads may help too... or so I've been told. toilet training puppy in winter is gonna be hard. good luck
-
charlie doesn't play fetch either.. LOL he will run after the ball if we run for it too.. but usually it's, i throw the ball.. he watch the ball roll away.. looks at me to see what i'll do.. and then simply flops on the floor. although he loves playing with the netball or volleyball, which is he no much bigger than him. he likes flopping over it... i think he mimick me how i lay on the exercise ball

Because he's far too young, you are expecting way too much of a baby puppy Please don't get upset if your puppy makes a mistake inside, he isn't being naughty he just can't help it, a nine week old puppy has little control over his bladder and when he's gotta go it just happens. Keep a rolled up newspaper handy and if your puppy makes a mistake inside the house hit YOURSELF over the head with it because it's your fault not his, you aren't watching him carefully enough. If you cannot supervise the puppy while he's inside always keep him in his crate. Take your puppy outside after meals, after playing and about every 3/4 hour in between, wait until he does a wee or a poo and then give him lots and lots of praise. Patience and persistence are the key to successful toilet training, but at 9 weeks I'd say he's doing very well. I agree with Miranda.. the puppy is still a baby.. (aww... i bet he is a cutie!) I know you got a busy household.. but yeah, just keep a eye on him. take him out after his meal, after he wakes up and after play time. He will finally catch on, although he does seem he knows what he is suppose to do or not.. just too young to fully control his bladder. My mum said toilet training a dog is sooo much easier potty train a kid... LOL... it just takes time.

usually i will go 'ouch, that's hurts' and turn my back to my puppy and ignore him if he gets to much, usually for 10 seconds.
-
agreed... only allowed in carpeted area if only supervised!
-
oh.. i will look into that too!!
-
haha.. it's a good investment... there is beef flavours bubbles too i think.. boyfriend is currently researching into that.. LOL i put it out every other day because we don't want Charlie to get too bored with it..

Awww.. Alfie is adorable!! I agree with Sandra777 when she said Stop filling his every waking minute with your presence. What I discovered what works for me is having a routine with my Charlie. Wake up, play with him, then my sister will play with him while I get ready for work, have breakfast, then we go for a 5-10 minute walk, then I give him a bone or chicken neck (he is crazy for them).. and while he is he eating, I leave. He doesn't notice. We do this every morning since I gone back to work after getting him. He gets a little sooky when I get home (well, when he realise that I'm home... he is usually snoozing or having an adventure in the backyard), but 5 minutes later, we are enjoying a snack together... LOL The will learn that you go and that you will come back... so during that time, just give him some toys to play with, turn the radio on (this might give him comfort). HAHA.. my OH just recently bought a bubble machine, and he put a timer where 1 every hour.. it will blow bubbles for puppy to play with (he spends his working hours figuring out stuff that will entertain the little fella when we are at work!). My sister has bought him a new toy one every second day (I swear my house looks like a toodler lives there.. we even have a toy box now for the dog). Seriously, I think is my dog having more fun with or without me?! LOL Yes, I know Charlie is spoilt! But, he is my OH first puppy too... and yeah, spoilt. Ignore the whinging if they just want something from you... seriously, they will learn that it doesn't work and they will quit doing it. Charlie is a crier... but we all ignore it. He does it less now... he only cries if he doesn't know where his favorite toy is... or he doesn't know which toy to play with and he can't fit 3 stuff toys in his mouth... LOL

Final Preparation Questions Before Pup Comes Home
W Sibs replied to all that glitters's topic in Puppy Chat
You sound like you have everything all set and organised!!! Just take a chill pill? LOL you're going to have so much fun with her.. You are so much more prepared then I was getting Charlie!!!! Just got him the basics! But here is my 2 cent.. hope it helps?! Toilet-training while working fulltime You have 4 days with your puppy.. then toilet train her straight away. What I did was, when puppy wakes up for his sleep, I take him outside and he does his business.. then praise him like crazy when he did it outside. Puppies usually pee straight after they wake up (just like when we wake up from a sleep.. we want to go to the toilet). There is a thing called PP Pads you can get.. i have no idea if they work though. I have Charlie to go on the papers upstairs in my ensuite (too little to go downstairs to outside yet).. and at the beginning when he did a mess inside the house, i will clean it up, he will come over and I will say 'Not allowed' and then leave. Not praising him. He picked it up quick smart. Puppies like to please!! Speaking of being alone.. I think it's harder on the owner to leave their puppy home alone then the puppy itself!! I usually have the radio on, i get up an hour earlier to play with Charlie, i take him for a quick 5-10 minute walk, we have breakfast together and he plays with my sister when i get ready to go to work.. i will play for him a little bit more (all this to hopefully tire the puppy out) and when i give him a treat like a small bone... he is so absorb in his treat the he doesn't even know that i'm gone!! Charlie has the kitchen and the backyard... we leave a gap open on the sliding door to the backyard (we have really really high walls and brick fences).. and so he can go out and in as he please. ohh.. sometimes, i will throw treats out to the grass so he can spend hours sniffing them out and looking for them. Yet, i still stress about him being lonely at home :S Correcting naughty behavior I don't use the word 'No'. I usually say 'Oi. Quit that' or 'Not allowed' in a very firm voice. Then ignore his bad behaviour. I don't praise Charlie if he did something wrong and then stopped it either. If you say stop, she stops.. just continue what you're doing. She will find something else to do to hopefully get a praise out of you Foods at 8wks onwards Puppy was on raw food from day 1 i got him home. As for bone, he is little but i give him rib bones to munch on.. although he doesn't do much damage at the moment. His favorite is chicken neck. I never thought of feeding puppy sardine... but I'm going to try it! -
charlie was toilet trained in 2 days... (8 weeks)... he sleeps through the night on the 2nd night too home. so, he was really easy! we go to sleep at 11.30pm and wake up at 6.30pm. usually take him outside for him to do his business before we go to bed though... but, we live in a 2 storey house and he is still too little to use the stairs (he sleeps in my room), so i have newspaper on my ensuite bathroom floor, if he has to do his business at the middle of the night, but he only have ever used it twice (so far)...
-
i meant, just teach her who's boss again... she might be too comfertable and start trying to push how far she can go again with you and OH... so go back to training again. my mum has a problem like that with one of her dogs... the dog gets to comfertable in the house and test her dominant again (growling.. never biting), and my mum always has to put her in her place. once the growling starts, my mum give her time out for 5 minutes, then before she let the dog out.. she makes the dog go through the simple commands like 'sit', 'drop', 'lay down' and 'roll over'. but, i agree with the other.. don't move puppy when she is sleeping. hope that make sense
-
oh no, that's not good at all!!!! yeah, she is sleeping while doing this? if not, start training or back to training again?
