  1. that's terrible! sending healing vibes over to Tyson and the rest of your family.
  2. I've had the pleasure of meeting Julie at the Awards night, and I simply love her energy. her passionate for dogs and helping people is admirable.
  3. When did I say anything about mollycoddling? There is a distinct difference between coddling and offering reassurance. My girl was always better if she had someone to lie next to or close by. If she got very frightened I would sit next to her and put my hand on her. It helped. I never cuddled her or made baby noises at her or did those high-pitched noises people tend to do when they are being sympathetic. THOSE encourage fear. It's like saying to your dog "I'm scared, too. Definitely something to freak out about." But calm reassurance does not reinforce fearful behaviour. And the chief reason why is because you can't positively reinforce fear. It's a response to an aversive stimulus. Here's several blog entries by Patricia McConnell with her views on dogs and thunderstorms: http://www.theotherendoftheleash.com/categ...phobia-in-dogs/ Edited to fix links. In some ways, this is how Emmy gets comfort from Charlie if she gets frighten. She will get close to him as possible and use his calm energy to not get frantic. Charlie is so calm that that energy soothes her.
  4. The boyfriend sent me this email: There was a news story recently about who much money people spend on their dogs over the pet’s lifetime. It was designed to sound excessive. This rebuttal letter was written to The Age today! Cheap at that price SO IT costs $24,000 to have a dog for 10 years (''Four-legged friends prove priceless'', The Age, 5/5)? This is cheap, when you consider the alternative. Try hiring the following, for 10 years: 1) a personal trainer to get you out walking even if it's cold and/or wet; 2) a therapist, to listen to all your troubles without judgment or criticism; 3) a security guard, to protect your home; 4) a physician, to lower your blood pressure and reduce your likelihood of suffering depression; 5) a spiritual guide, to help you find joy in simple pleasures like tossing a ball; and 6) a best friend, who is always there for you, giving you love and affection. Mervyn Robbins, Coburg --------------------------------------------- this is soooo true!! My dogs are priceless...

  7. Im one of the lucky ones though, I adopted two cavs from Jane in 03, and at the end of these hard days, I get to go home to them. They are gorgeous! At the same time, hats off to you. From what i've read, you are doing an amazing job. So is Steve (Julie) and everyone who's also personally involved. In fact, i think DOL is just awesome!
  8. You cut a pig in half? Lucky puppy  Bundy was eating whole pigs ears from the time he came home, but he wasn't super tiny. Only ever had them supervised. you know what I mean
  9. Charlie is oblivious thunder, fireworks etc. Nothing phases him. Whereas Emmy is still learning. Any loud noise, she use to run into the bathroom and hide or behind the couch but she is getting braver now. She either goes hide behind her big brother (Charlie) or cuddles really really close to him. He just ignores her and continue to do what he was doing.
  10. Emmy loves love them. She got her first pig ear at 9 weeks... I cut a huge pig in half. one for charlie and one for emmy. I took it away when she lost interest in it. For the first few times, I will supervise.
