  1. I think that he should be fine until the morning. I carried him out to the do a wee and then put him back in his crate. He had a drink of some lactose free milk with a bit of porridge in it (his favourite) and has now gone to sleep. So i think he should be okay until the morning. I think the steroid injection has made him feel a bit happier today but I definitely think he needs further investigation and some pain relief. I think it is a good think that he wants to stay in his crate away from the other dogs although it is a bit distressing as watch as he is usually so playful and active. We don't seem to have any good after hours vets around here. They all close at 5pm which doesn't help when you work even getting in for vaccinations is difficult, has to be a saturday morning.

    Pup Lethargic

Yes i know. He said considering he doesn't have a temp and normal stools etc and abdomin seemed fine he thought there was nothing wrong. He does have a definite limp on the back leg now which was so evident at first. The vet i saw was not my regular vet as he is on holidays and i had to go to a different clinic. I don't feel happy and wont another opinion. I think the pain seems to be coming from his hip, if i pick him up with that hip close to my body he screams if i hold him with that hip away from my body he is okay with it. If he screams in pain he runs and hides. I will try see if Bowral vet is open on Sunday failing that i can go to Sylvania or Strathfield. Lets hope i can find a vet that seems to care!!

    Pup Lethargic

I went to the Vet with my pup. He seemed to think he has a sore back leg which is what i had thought. At first he said there is nothing wrong with him and when i insisted he pulled his back leg out very hard and the dog screamed (not happy!!). Oh he said i got a reaction then didn't i. He gave him a cortisone injection and said it is just muscular because he will weight bear. This morning he seemed a lot brighter and ate quite a bit but tonight i went to lift him up the back steps and he screamed and has gone in his crate and wont come out again. He didn't eat his dinner. I need to go to a different vet and am desperate to find a good one open on sunday. I live 30 mins south of campbelltown but don't care where i need to go, does anyone have any suggestions.
  4. Hi Does anyone have a really good vet that is open on sunday. My puppy is in a lot of pain with his back leg and screaming in pain if you pick him up. He is reluctant to move and not eating. I saw a vet on Friday night (not my regular vet who is away on holiday) but he just thinks it is a sprain. He gave him a cortisone injection which helped but tonight he seems worse. I don't care how far i have to go if it is a good vet. I live in south west sydney. I would like to get him xrayed and i want to see a vet that it not going to just fob me off. Any ideas please.

    Pup Lethargic

No he is still not good. He perked up when i got home last night and ate a small amount of his dinner, then chewed on his bone for about 20 minutes. I thought he seemed a bit better so i didn't go to the vet. Now this morning he is still laying around with a reluctance to move. He had to be lifted out of his crate this morning to go to the toilet. He ate breakfast again but just the meat (no kibble). Usually he runs around with my other dogs but doesn't seem to want to come out of his crate at all. I have made an appointment with the vet tonight. I wished I took him last night but i thought he was on the improve. I think he seems sore all over his body. I am wondering if he has had a fall off my deck without me knowing or if one of my other pups has been a bit rough with him or whether it was all the car trips and the dog training. Just guessing I suppose. My poor little man, he looks so pathetic. He tries to wag his little screw tail but not with any vigour. Thanks for your concern.

    Pup Lethargic

Hi All I am a little worried about my 4 month old British Bulldog pup. He has suddenly become very lethargic. He has gone from being very playful and active to wanting to lay in his crate and sleep. I have to lift him out to take him to the toilet and he doesn't come out to play with my other dogs. At first i thought he was just tired. We had been to show training on the Tuesday night and he was trotting out nicely but totally refused to stack so the trainer suggested he was tired and to take him home early. He was okay when i got him home and happy to see the other dogs. Wednesday morning he was bright and was playing with the other dogs. I took him to puppy preschool on wednesday at 10 am and he was bright and chirpy when he got there and about half way through he seemed to loose interest so again we went home. When i got home he went into his crate and didn't surface for about 3 hours. He went out to the toilet and did a big wee and a normal poo. He then went back into his crate. I got his dinner ready and he didn't come out which concerned me somewhat. I took his food to the crate and he ate only the meat and none of the kibble. When my husband arrived home from work he didn't get out to greet him but only lifted his head up. This morning he again didn't come out of his crate he drank some milk and ate about a quarter of his kibble with sardines then just plonked back down to sleep. Again he did a normal poo and a big wee. At first i though i have just exhausted him by taking him to too many things and trips in the car. Now I am getting concerned. There are no other symptoms no vomiting, no diarrhoea, doesn't seem tight in his tummy just lethargic and off his food. I was wondering about teething. I looked in his mouth and he seems to have to rows of teeth in the front as though the baby teeth haven't dropped out and the big boy teeth are pushing through. I have left him today and gone to work and as i am sat here typing this, i can't believe i have left him at home and not taken him to the vet. Any thoughts
  7. The ingredients are different in each royal canon formula. I.e medium junior is dehydrated poultry meat, animal fats, wheat flour and maize flour. If you want grain free have a look at the Artemis web site. I have tried both and went back to royal canin. I thought my dogs condition overall looked better.
  8. There is one in bargo. Which is 1 hour from Liverpool.
  9. I gave my JRT one once and once only as he had the worst case of pancreatitis after it and i had to rush him to Strathfield vet at 3 o'clock in the morning (1 hours and 20 minute drive on Easter Sunday). But in saying that he would get dreedful bouts of pancreatitis and in the end became near impossible to feed.
  10. Not sure where in Sydney you live but the pet shop in Bowral have it in stock. Maybe they will post it to you.
  11. Yes I give flaxseed oil to my pups as well as to my horses. I always feed human grade flaxseed oil. I but a small bottle of 250ml from Woolworth health food section for about $4. I give each dog about 1 tsp a day. The horses get 20ml a day. You could give crushed flaxseeds as well if they will eat it. Great for coat and as a joint supplement for the horses, dogs too. It is full omega 3 and 6.
  12. Are lamb flaps the same as lamb breast. I have fed these to my dogs and they gobble them up very quickly. I get a little scared with bones, i usually give lamb shanks which is good for ripping the meat off. Lamb necks look a little sharp so i have always avoided them. I have Aussie bulldogs and they seem to swallow must things without chewing so anything small is no good. Any other suggestions for me? Thank you in advance
  13. I have a book put out by dept of primary industries about poisonous plants for horses and they are ranked very dangerous. I believe they are bitter in taste and most horses and most likely dogs won't eat them.
  14. Having worked for a paediatric gastroenterologist i can give you some info from a human prospective. Generally people who have atopic tendencies have this problem i.e allergies, food intolerances, eczema or asthma. Usual treatment is with corticosteroids and once it has settled it is usually ok but there can be relapses. I assume the dog would have had the initial treatment and is now on a special diet. Usual symptoms can be things like weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting etc. I don't think it would be life threatening (only if left untreated and the dog wasn't eating of course). I would assume that once he is well occasional bones would be okay and perhaps chicken (low allergy type foods). It is not caused by allergy in all cases. Maybe you could ring the University or there could be a Vet specialist in gastro problems that you could make an enquiry with. Sydney Uni are always very helpful with questions like that.
  15. I have used the Fido brand which cost about $10. I now use Curash Baby wipes that are fragrance free. They cost about $4.50 for around 80. They are just as good, are cheaper and you get a lot more for your money. They only difference is the Curash ones are slightly smaller than Fido brand. They are great for quick clean ups.
  16. I give my dogs Linseed oil 2-3 times a week on their food. I just give them about 1 teaspoon. I buy it in Woolies in the health food section and it costs $4 a bottle and lasts for a long while for 2 dogs. I also feed sardines about 2-3 times a week on their RC kibble. They have lovely shiny coats. I give linseed oil to my horses as well.
  17. I feed my pups on Royal Canin and don't have any problems with this. They really like it but i do mix it with other things such as mince and some vegetables. I originally bought Euk my ended up taking it back after reading many kibble threads on DOL and changed to the RC.
  18. Do you feed many raw bones in their diet too? Yes i give them lamb shanks and lamb flaps which they love. They have a new lamb shank every second day. I also give sardines a couple of times a week as well as some of a small amount of cooked vegies in rice, just a spoonful over their kibble. I cut the kibble down according to the extras i give. They get an occasional pig ear as a treat too.
  19. I have fed both RC and Artemis (which is what I feed currently to one dog, the other two are on a raw diet). I prefer the ingredients in Artemis and the Royal Canin I was feeding had maize as the first ingredient. The most important thing is to feed what your dog does best on, no one food works for every dog and Artemis doesn't agree with some dogs. Thank you. The RC i feed has dehydrated chicken as it's first ingredient which i am happy about. The only think i find is that there are an aweful lot of poos to pick up and that are large volume.
  20. I am feeding my puppies Royal Canin medium junior and was thinking about Artemis after reading posts on this forum. I like the idea of little to no grains even though RC only has a small amount of filler as a binding agent. I am interested in peoples thoughts.
