  1. google Gulgong Removalist and ask if they can do a backload for you (where they move your stuff on the way back from another trip). Based in Mudgee/Gulgong, but regularly do interstate trips from memory.
  2. I may be way off track here, but you mention approach and avoidance, and from memory your study involved dogs targetting something for a reward? Is it possible that the sighthounds you tested weren't so much timid, but not motivated by the task and/or reward? I have a sighthound cross, and training her is a challenge... I always get the "what's in it for me" look, or I've done that twice already, why do I have to do it again... just food for thought.
  3. Somebody on DOL once said that they had "stable doors" instead of normal doors in their house, so they could leave top/bottom/both open or closed. I thought that it was a brilliant idea, but might not be what you want.
  4. I do that for our 25-30 kg dogs. However, a friend wanted to try some for their dog, who is a lot smaller. I was able to give them some food, but was also hoping to give them some idea of how much to feed. I'll drop into a pet supply store this morning, it was just easier to ask here last night.
  5. We feed Purina Bonnie, but no longer have the bag. Just wondering if anyone can tell me how much they recommend feeding a 3kg dog please - in cups, if possible.
  6. Sorry, I've only just skimmed this post. I have a leaflet called "It's Okay to Cry - Pet Loss and Grief" (Pat Miller). In the back, it has some recommended books for adults and children, so I thought it might help - sorry, I haven't read or seen any of these but thought it might be a place for you to start... http://www.amazon.com/Tenth-Good-Thing-About-Barney/dp/0689712030/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1312788182&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Ill-Always-Love-Hans-Wilhelm/dp/0517572656/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1312788411&sr=1-1 Another couple of links which I hope might help you with this... http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/PLHL/support/child.aspx http://ebusiness.avma.org/EBusiness50/files/productdownloads/pet_loss_brochure.pdf
  7. Just a firm no and stop play or attention. My pup is 6 months and she now only mouths when she excited, for example when I get home from work, and she grabs my clothes. I make her sit before I pat her. It is a really good habit to get into as who wants a dogs jumping around them, but also is distracts her from the mouthing. Firm no and stopping play does NOT work when he's excited - we've tried - dog is now 4-5 years old. He will happily sit for a pat, but not when excited. We adopted him when he was 1-2 years old. Mouthy is not painful, but it is something we would like to change.
  8. I'm not meaning to side-track the thread and apologise if I do - PM is fine if you prefer. We adopted an adult dog (mixed breed - retreiver cross ???) who is very mouthy. He has progressed from being mouthy all the time to mouthy when excited. We have mainly just withdrawn attention, but this seems to have any impact on his mouthiness when he is excited - is there anyway to teach him not to mouth???
  9. In time this (fairly new, I think) organisation may help to fill a need... http://minddog.org.au/
  10. Just a random thought from a very "green" trainer, who has never trained articles - so I'm not sure how helpful it will be. Since you say that you are certain that she understands the exercise, my instinct would be to quietly end the training session as soon as she picked up the wrong article. I would not say anything, but would end the exercise, so as to remove the opportunity to earn a reward. I'm not familiar with dogscouts method (off to google!) - but my other thought is to have her find the articles in longish grass until she truly understands that she needs to use her nose.

  12. Probably not that close to you, but Richmond TAFE (Sydney) are running one on 14-15 October 2011 http://wsi.tafensw.edu.au/Templates/DisplayContentFile.ashx?cfid=7951
  13. I've been told recently that Rubbermaid are no longer going to be making their "Scoop n Store". Having said that, some pet stores have got really good specials on them at the moment, possibly for this reason.
  14. That is such a cool idea - if we ever get a yard big enough, I'm definitely stealing your idea!
  15. Ah, only if you were up here. Local vet has had RC Mobility on back order for 2 weeks, with no indication of when their order is due - at least they still have small bags. Our other local vet has no RC mobility at all!
  16. Okay - this is for everyone who, like me changed their dog over to Royal Canin Mobility when Hills j/d was affected I just spoke to our vet this afternoon - they currently cannot source Royal Canin Mobility - the problem that delayed Hills j/d getting into the country is now apparently affecting Royal Canin. Urgh - means I get to switch her back to Hills j/d, and put up with the mushy poop for 2 weeks - doesn't matter how slowly I make the change, it always seems to happen!

  19. I have one dog who gets very soft stools when given bones or raw - but is fine on kibble only. I think the fat content of bones/raw upsets her gut, hence the soft stools. I know this is different to most people's experience, but thought it was worth mentioning.
