  1. Hmmm that doesn't seem fair at all, all that effort for nothing. It's really such a pain in the (____.____) too. Especially when you can't even get them to the end of the street without vomit...... I'll let you know if we get anywhere with it.
  2. The vet prescribed Avil (which is human medicine brought from the chemist) 1/2 a tablet for my 8kg dog 20 minutes before travelling, put them in the front seat on the floor where there is the least movement and the least amount of visual stimulation. It didn't stop her from being sick but it did get us a lot further than usual. I'm also about to start a routine that was recommended to me. My girl gets sick within 5 minutes of being in the car. They say it's a fear thing. The routine consists of feeding her in the car every day and not moving the car. Then very, very, very, short trips, just down the driveway before feeding in the car. Then slightly longer each day, but only a matter of a few more meters each time.... Also add in each day a few times if possible, a little play. It can just be for a few seconds or a minute or so of anything that the dog likes, tug of war, retrieving a ball......only positive thoughts of the car and not forcing anything. I've been warned to do this very slowly over a matter of weeks and not to try to rush it, particularly the length of driving, just baby steps and definitely not driving any distance that would normally make her sick or it defeats the whole exercise. Fingers crossed for me.........it sounds tedious, but if it works it will be worth it.
  3. I'll be going to all the seminars and observing 1 workshop
  4. My BC x girl has a few fatty lumps. She's had each one checked as we find them. The vet has been pretty confident they have been fatty lumps if they move around freely and when they draw what they can out via a needle and put it on a glass slide, it is oily/greasy. Glad to hear you vet just thinks you boy has fatty lumps. It is a bit scary when you find a lump on you dog and don't know what it is.......
  5. Thanks Staranais, I will use that as a starting point and see how we go. I might try feeding the lower end of the range and see how we go, she is a little on the chubby side
  6. For a diet like this can anyone give me rough idea of quantities to feed daily. I have dog that doesn't know when to stop eating. I have a 19kg very small border collie - small in stature not in weight and an 7-8 kg Dandy Dinmont (small but stocky terrier type dog).
  7. and whose fault is that? They don't breed the dogs do they? My figures were in response to another post Pointeeblab but in response to your comment: No they don't breed the dogs, but these euth rates are shocking and appalling.
  8. Figures from RSPCA QLD annual report 2007-2008 Puppies and dogs reclaimed by their owners 4150 Puppies and dogs adopted 5152 Puppies and dogs euthanised 6962 More killed than rehomed.......
  9. It looks like it is a defnite puppy farm. Hi Pugrescue.... just wondering where this info came from?
  10. Don't listen to a single word of criticism from antagonists! Some people just like to stir up trouble. What you decide to do and whether you decide to ask for help is no-one else’s business. Sometimes we decide to rescue a dog, and when we get it things aren’t “perfect”. Does that mean we should kill it on sight? Do we only rescue perfect dogs? Should we take it one step further into our human interactions and only offer help and assistance to humans that are not poor, elderly or sick, only those that are strong, athletic and young….. Perhaps only help those with blonde hair and blue eyes….? Thank god for humans with empathy. It’s not something stupid, it’s what makes us human. Dog's can live happily for years with heart conditions. The usual symptoms are swollen bellies, fluid on the lungs, difficulty breathing, sometimes a cough, lethargy. Depending on the problem and severity, they can enjoy good quality of life with medication for their heart and diuretics to help with the accumulated fluid. The symptoms of breathing difficulty and lethargy are often alleviated by these medications. Yes there will be some cases that are too serious and things will eventually deteriorate, but perfect or not, this girl deserves as much of a chance as any other. Thank you for at least giving her a chance to be diagnosed before handing out an automatic death sentence. Thank you for making her life happier. Whether her life is short or long (which it may still be), you have made a difference to her. And anyone that chooses to help you out does so because that is what they want to do. Enjoy the time you have together and give May the biggest hug for us!
  11. Hi Jaybeece We just started taking our 7yr old border collie and a very hyper over excitable, nuts around other dogs terrier cross, 2yr old girl to Boroondara Dog Training a couple of weeks ago. We were a bit worried about the terrier because she is very unpredictable. We don't think she has had much socialization in the past, but the trainers have been great and she really has improved in just the couple of weeks we have been going. If you are worried about anything, just talk to Ron the owner prior to going down there. I was worried that it may be a waste of time and money with the little terrier. I didn't think she would be able to calm down and stop barking enough to learn anything. Ron suggested bringing the dogs down and if we didn't think she could fit in, in the group environment, he was suggesting a trainer that has successfully assimilated some pretty difficult dogs into groups before. But we didn't have to worry with that. What the trainers did with our little monkey was get us to keep some distance from the rest of the dogs and the trainers would stand between our dog and the other dogs to begin with. Progressively we have been getting closer and last week they did some intensive training with getting the dogs to walk amongst each other but getting them to leave each other alone with positive (high value) rewards and commands. So far we are really impressed with them. A really nice group of people and we are seeing some very positive improvements.
