On the Lost Dog's Homes Facebook page: "through an unfortunate series of events with your organisation and due to a lack of system control, your inability to read human behaviour or red flag certain cases, which in turn, led to a healthy 5 yr old dog being put to death within hours of being within your care, i can no longer find the trust or professionalism within The Lost Dogs Home to further bring my animals for treatment and will be cancelling my monthly donations / support that i give to you..." "You guys first and for most have a duty of care towards our fury friends. Our poor little, fury friend lost his life at 5 years old due to a complete lack of care by your centre. <br data-reactid=".1rx.1:3:1:$comment10152395249371021_10152395266306021:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.$end:0:$3:0">There is no words that can describe the pain our family is going through, and the devastating loss we have to now endure. This was a lack of judgement on the staff's behalf. I thought you were helping change the world, all you've done is brought ours crumbling down around us." "My father has Dementia, and in one of his 'episodes" as we call them, he took his dog down to the centre to relinquish his rights to Scruffy without telling any other family member before the situation had occurred.... My father was witnessed sitting out the front of the centre, for a period of 15 minutes before entering in a highly agitated state, abusing staff in an angry / upset manner, behaviour that didn't go unnoticed by most staff on shift in the clinic... Scruffy was then assessed by a vet, deemed unfit to be re-homed due to a mild and treatable skin condition , then euthanized within 3-4 hours of being in their care... Then only to add insult to injury when my sister and i had called the The Lost Dogs home on several occasions asking about Scruffy and he was nowhere to be found on the system and to be told the paperwork of authority was not signed for release of any such dog of this description in there care or had been for the past several days.... Upon pushing for information my sister was able to obtain the right facts about Scruffy and his unfortunate journey and eventual death... They never gave this dog a second chance at life nor my father a cooling off period of 24-48 hours even after witnessing the mental state to which he presented himself, my sister and i did every thing in our power to rescue him but in the end we had everything against us from the start..." The response from the LDH "This is a very sad situation for all involved. The dog was surrendered to the Home by it's owner and if you wish to discuss further it would be best to contact the shelter directly on 03 9329 2755."

Little gifts not sure where the confusion comes from - my apologies. I have offered suggestions on how to deal with councils as we have had to in Victoria and sorry I got sidetracked defending the great rescuers in Victoria who used to deal with the Lost Dogs Home that both T and Aussie 3 have labelled as overzealous or nutters. My apologies but wanted to set the record straight that the LDH did not shut their doors to rescuers in Victoria because of nutters or overzealous rescuers. There were good, decent honest people who have gone on to be awarded Victorian organization of the year others heading Dog Rescue Association Victoria etc. Rescuers that have gone on to have great relationships with other councils, pounds and shelters. Anyhoo, hope my suggestions are useful. They have worked in some area's here. But unfortunately in Victoria there are 16 or so councils that contract to the lost dogs home, it's not quite as straight forward. But you are in a position where you have just once council to convince, if you can get your community behind it, you may just be able to do it :) Especially if you can build a good report with your council and not go in with guns blazing :) -

That was pretty polite actually ;) I think the rudeness began with your statement "rescue nutters" There were very decent obliging rescuers that used to deal with the Lost Dogs Home, not nutters. How bloody rude. You don't know anything about me or what and who I know and for the record I'm not sticking up for them or any other shelters. No wonder people dislike the rescue forums  -

LOL no worries T. You seem to be the expert on ALL things Lost Dogs Home. Seeing as you have just taken the things I proposed previously, expanded on them and called them our idea.... I'll take that as a compliment. And nothing wrong with utilizing the media to push your agenda and educate the public if, as I mentioned earlier, you have tried talking respectfully to council first to no avail....all good causes use it. It's worked here but I'm not giving too much away on here. Spies everywhere you know ;) -

It's fantastic that the group you volunteer for have managed to have a dogs transferred to them. But I must say it's a very interesting snippet of information. During a radio interview on 3AW, GS was asked why he wouldn't release animals to rescue. His reply was that they used to but some of the rescue groups sent the animals interstate. This was his reason he gave to the public as to why he didn't release to rescue. So I hope you don't mind me quoting you and this information next time there is a media forum with the LDH. ;) And in relation to the media campaigns, it's irrelevant how it influences the LDH. If rescues have already attempted to communicate with them and have exhausted all peaceful and sensible avenues, it's now time to influence their council :) -

LOL I really love the experts on what the problem is with the LDH and rescue in Victoria, especially comments from people that where in no way involved..... and don't even live in the state. It's quite comical, so I'll chose not to waste my energy on these fruitless ridiculous and outrageous statements.... It's childish really :) So please excuse me if I ignore anything that is in no relation to moving forward trying to make a positive change. A few suggestions for those who are trying to make a difference (I'm sure you also have your own thoughts and idea's and probably have many of these things in place or in the planning stage already). Gather a small group to co-ordinate your efforts Set up a fb page and webpage so that you can spread your message, communicate and refer people to you letters. news and content. Letters and emails to Brisbane City Council - co-ordinate a letter campaign and try to attract as many local people as possible to your cause. (online petitions don't seem to hold much weight) Ask to speak to you local councilors about the issue Attend local council meetings and ask for your issue to be put on the agenda so you get time for discussion of your issue As much media as possible in local papers/local radio stations/talkback radio highlighting the increase in euthanasia rates - but make sure you have the figures right - make sure you mention the council in all of your media releases, councils hate bad publicity and it is one of the things that will get them to take action - but talk to them first to see if anything can be done before getting them offside. We have found here many councilors actually have no idea what goes on and if they are communicated with respectfully have often surprised us ;) If there are any animal management plans/stratagies/policies around get your hands on it (you may need to contact the council and ask them if they have these documents) and see if it has anything on it in relation to euthanasia rates, lowering them or addressing high euthanasia rates and bring this to the attention of the council. -

Check out what Logan have it's an animal management document http://www.logan.qld.gov.au/facilities-and-recreation/animals/2011-to-2015-Animal-Management-Strategy-August-2011-web.pdf Brisbane may not have one, I'm not sure it's a legislative requirement in QLD yet. But you could ring them and ask as not all documents are necessarily on the net. You are looking for an Animal Management strategy, plan or policy document or even Draft Document if they are currently working on one ;) Guardienne, I didn't have much luck, either. Only thing I could find was a general notice on the BCC's website. It didn't even mention anything about rehoming where possible. It's has many 'motherhood' words... like 'safe', 'fair', 'voice for animals', but no actual behavioral strategies that could be observed & measured. Shall still keep looking: -

Do the councils in Queensland have Domestic Animal Management plans or strategies or similar. E.g. Logan city council have an Animal Management Strategy that states as one of their objectives "provide a sales and re-homing service to minimise the euthanasia of unclaimed and surrendered cats and dogs" A quick search didn't bring anything up for me for Brisbane City Council, but this would be the first thing I would look into. Then where applicable address council with complaints in relation to their animal management plans and strategies. Good luck. I Feel free to do so. Are you arguing that there should be one system only... large shelters mainly minimally funded thro' the public purse with charity fund-raising as well? Or for a balanced system where large shelters funded via the public purse/charity fund-raising are the mainstays, but supplemented by the efforts of some private community rescues? Or something else? I'd be interested to know what you're going to do in relation to this issue presently unfolding about the Lost Dogs' Home in Brisbane? I've said I'm taking the issue to relevant Councillors.... because the back story with the Petition claims that the LDH is not meeting community standards in how ratepayer-supplied funds are being used to run the 2 Brisbane Pounds. And that the private rescue system, which has previously supplemented that, has been turned away. Interesting to consider if the well-developed AWL Qld had also been a tenderer for the Brisbane Pounds. But were unsuccessful. Someone said this was so.... but I don't have any reference. If so, there might have been a totally different story re the 2 Brisbane Council Pounds. AWL has managed to implement a shelter system with public-money contracts from the Gold Coast & Ipswich Councils.... & also greatly attracting charity fund-raising. And using their own foster-carers & volunteers.. Also, cooperating well, in my experience, with breed rescue. In fact, when I approach the relevant Brisbane councillors, I'll be pointing out AWL Qld's success. What annoys me greatly, is that Q'ld already had that context. The Brisbane Pound management system should've made use of it. Rather than become a branch from a Melbourne context. -

Dog Tags For Rescue Dogs
Guardienne replied to Cheyd's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I always, always have a tag on mine. I think aluminium/metal is best, If you dont want to send the expensive tags with them and you are happy to put the old plastic tag (that you use on keys) you can buy mini ones from some of the hardware stores. You can get the aluminium ones on ebay (either plain metal or some really colorful unique designs (design your own) for between 6.00 and 6.99 (buy 2 get one free) which works out at $12 to $14 for 3 engraved. -

Can anyone tell me if there is a section in NSW for Duty of Care in the Companion Animal Act (or any other legislation/code of practice) and if so where I can find it, or is it just an agreement with pounds and shelters?

Thank you Sno Paws from the bottom of my heart. This is the RSPCA's comments in relation to this. What are you thoughts? The RSPCA is powerless to prosecute irresponsible breeders unless they are committing an offence under animal welfare legislation in the state they are operating in. Sadly, this means the situation has to be very bad before we can intervene.

Well it soon will not be a problem for you, the large scale breeding facilities will be inspected and any small breeders that are still around. Now if you are buying a puppy from an inspected and approved large scale breeding facility, I am not sure if you as the buyer will be able to visit the mum and pups. Play with them, temperament test the litter and have weekly updates and discussions about the pups as they grow with their breeder like you might have done in the past with a home breeders. Which BTW would have given you ample time to scrutinize how the pups and dogs were managed in the breeders home. But I am sure the staff member on duty that day at the facility will be able to answer any questions you have. You will also know that the large scale breeding facility has passed inspection and is approved to breed and sell puppies. So it seems you will have ample opportunity to get a pup from an inspected source. For the greater good. I'm not all that interested in made up hypotheticals...... I was hoping for an answer to the questions posed Me special, not at all. That is why I will stop breeding and leave that to those who want to conduct a business. I worked for years in the second most regulated industry in the world, the only thing more regulated was nuclear. I was an expert at interpreting and meeting regulations, writing and implementing policies and procedures of those regulations, not to mention educating the staff on compliance. I am retired now, too old for all the stuff anymore. I bred for the pleasure of seeing the pups grow up and to get my next dog. Not a problem, I can do other things in my retirement that does not require heaps of regulations and inspections. Besides I have been at it for 2o+ years, bred more than my fair share of exceptional dogs, it is time to move over and let the new inspected and approved large scale breeding facilities have their go. For the greater good. Still not answered........

I was hoping for an answer to the questions posed intersting thinking? so when was the last time Harvey Normans owner had his home inspected, Dick Smith for that matter? or do u mean if a dog owner actually wished their home not to be raided. do not keep your dogs at home? rent a shop for the purpose? Totally not relevant if he doesn't conduct his business on his premises.
