IggiePiggie replied to SmoothieGirl's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
SHEL72, ME TOO. Puppy needs to go to puppy school in about 3/4 weeks. AND AM LOOKING AROUND SPOTSWOOD TOO. I go to the Hobson's Bay vet clinic and they are really nice, I have been talking to them about puppy school, but don't know about obedience school. -

Ahahaha, they need to give their toys to me. where are you based iggie piggie ? We have some old puppy soft toys/collar/stuff etc. from our boy that is no longer with us (he was killed in an accident at 4 months in March). Understand if that's a little macabre or something for you, so feel free to say no, but we are throwing them out for our new beginning, and getting some new ones for our new pup who arrives 30 May. (Probably a bit luxurious in this economic climate but there you go). That said, our most popular toy was a large plastic milk container (mentioned elsewhere here), with some pebbles/dirt inside and tied to a bit of rope so we could swing it round. Lid on tightly, and might not be great when their teeth get stronger and can get lid off but good for the early days. I also highly recommend your local charity store as others have mentioned. I bought a couple of things, ripped the eyes out of the poor soft fluffy toys and sewed their eye sockets very tightly together. We borrowed a crate from my SIL from when their pups were little, you might find people may be willing to lend you crates that puppy has grown out of. good luck with your new pup -what breed is it ? I'm in Melbourne bozthepup. Not macabre at all. And I am worried i made myself out to be penniless. I have bought all the essentials. But I am going to discuss with my breeder, and we will figure it out, even if i have to wait a little longer.

Trouble Switching From Wet Food To Dry Food

So dry food would generally be better value for money as well... -

Thanks. Will give it a try. But you all generally agree that dry food is better for the dog? -

Hi PPS, I'm not being obnoxious. but what do you mean? I am not poor, I have vet bills etc covered. I have its bed(quite safe) and its pen, as well as quality puppy food. I am asking for ideas on how to cut costs with some things, but obviously if i feel cutting the costs on something with endanger the pup i won't do it. Some of the suggestions in the thread are for items that I'd consider dangerous for a puppy or a false ecomony so to speak. Not that you have taken them all onboard but others might. I would prefer to hang onto a puppy for an extra week or so , if one of my buyers found themselves in a similar situation to you, so they could purchase the items that they need. Many of the things such as crates, pens, leads , bowls etc could be a one of purchase that would last the puppy a life time. This is fair enough. And ofcourse it is a breeders perogative to choose when they think the buyer is ready. I will make sure the breeders knows about my situation. She might have tips too.

I think this thread will be useful to everyone as times are getting tough. Look I really admire all you breeders. You are so dedicated. But I also don't like to be patronised. But saying that, i will take everyones advice under consideration. I have spent months doing research on how to look after my pup. I am just asking tips from people who know.

Trouble Switching From Wet Food To Dry Food
IggiePiggie replied to IggiePiggie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Reading back through my post it seems the logical thing to do would be to make it unavailable to him after a certain time frame. Then let him digest it before bed. -
Hi everyone, I feel like a bit of a pain, like I have been posting new topics every 5 minutes. However I have been feeding my pup on canned food for the past year. However I so want to switch him over to dry because I feel that will be better for him. But I've had heaps of trouble doing this. When I change to dry food, at night he refuses to eat it all but goes back to up until it is quite late at night. And it also causes him to drink alot more water. Which means I am up at all hours of the night to let him outside. This got too hard for me at a certain point as I was working full time and I had to go back to wet. Is there anyway I can avoid this, or do I just have to stick it out. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question.

You don't sound rude. I have back up cash for vet bills etc I also have his worming down as well as that of my other dog and his first vet apointment. Basically its just that because of the car, i no longer have money to splash out on his accessories or preparing the house, financially i will be right as rain about a week after he comes. Thanks for the tips everyone etc.

HI! So I had all my puppy plans set out. I get paid monthly so i was to go buy all my supplies this weekend for when the puppy get here in 3 weeks. However, as it goes in my life, my car broke down with major problems last week and i had to spend most of my puppy cash on fixing it. SO I am trying to do puppy preparation on a budget. I had been looking at puppy pens online to buy for leaving the puppy inside when i got out. However they were almost $120. I looked around the forum and saw the bunnings compost cages. $26 - DONE Another thing I found when i was on here was some DOLer with whippets had used a box as a crate and cut a whole in the fornt and filled it with blankets. I am looking for more ideas i guess. They dont have to be permanent as I get paid a week and a half after he gets here. Ijust thought it would be a good place to share some ideas...

No fleas. It is hard to get them and keep them on an Italian Greyhound. It has been a while between wormings. Longer than it should have been. Well if there aren't any fleas why would you treat him for something he hasn't got? ;) Just worm him. Don't forget that your new puppy will need regular worming every two weeks until he's twelve weeks and then monthly until he's six months. TA!

Sorry - not clear I am talking about how to make my 2 and a half year old dog more puppy safe, health wise. I just want him to be in good form for when the pup gets here.

So i am getting a new pup and i need to know what i need to do to the old pup before the new one gets here. He has had all his shots. I guess i am thinking more along the lines of worming and fleeing? Can anyone think of anything else? And i am on a budget, can anyone share some good worming/fleeing products that won't break my bank? TA! :p :D ;) ;)

Bad Experiences With Introducing Pups To Older Dogs
IggiePiggie replied to IggiePiggie's topic in Puppy Chat
See, i have read that in a couple of places. But a couple of breeders have told me to definitely go for a male, as they are much more even-tempered. If both pups are de-sexed will it make that much of a difference? The dachshund was a male as well and they ended up being friends. -
So our first family dog was an abandoned mini dachshund(Boudine) that had been mistreated and as a consequence had a fairly snappy attitute. Our second dog was a another dachshund(Albert) who also learnt some bad manners from our original mini, Boudine. Now the problem is that Albert was almost 9 when i got my first Italian Greyhound (Borris). And not only did Albert not like Borris, he actually went him a couple of times. And not a playful, nip. But an all out charge and bite. Now they are good friends now. We ended up taking it slower to get them used to eachother and kept a very close eye on them. Borris and I no longer live with Albert and we are getting another IG pup and I am just a bit nervous that Borris may have, in turn, picked up some bad habits. Borris has done a lot more socialising that Albert had and he definitely has a certain affinity with other IG's he meets. The only problem is that when the I first introduced Albert to Borris i was not working and could keep an eye on them. However i may be able to take a couple of days off work but i won't be able to monitor the pup and Borris 24/7, after say, the first week. Does anyone have any advice about how to deal with this?
