Vet checked her over this morning. temp normal, no tenderness either. She thinks its just gastritis. i have to withhold food today. she on the doggie version of glucazade. molly sleeps normally and lies down quite contented. she even did a poo this morning that was very normal. she must be having some food still going through otherwise i don't know how she made the poo. i'm supposed to give her small bits of plain chicken to see how she goes. if she can't keep it down, i'll be going back again tomorrow afternoon. cavnrott : how did they diagnose dying bowel?

her moods are fairly normal. The one eposide of vomiting i would not worry about. But now it's twice in one day. i read a site that suggested to withhold food for 24-48 hours. her apeitite is normal. i think if there was an obstruction, her apepite would be decreased quite a bit.

She just vomited dinner up now. I think i'll be going to the vet in the morning.

I have two shih tzu crosses (8kg each). i gave them lamb shanks late last week. they chew off the meat and have a go at the ends. Molly, the girl, vomited most of it back up i think, but seemed OK. The weekend went fine. Then monday night i gave them a bone to knibble on the ends of. Tuesday AM she sort of was vomiting a clear liquid just the once. I didn't thnk much of it. She ate her breakfast yesterday OK and last night too. Then this morning again she vomited a little bit on her walk, yellowy a bit, but not much in it. Today at lunch time she ate some grass and vomitted up her breakfast from this morning. She is pooing normally yesterday and this morning too. I just fed her a small dinner just in case. Her mood is normal - still wants to play. Does anyone have any ideas re: this? If her gut was obstructed with a bone (that what worries me), wouldn't the symptoms be worst than this? Has any one experienced this? Thanks

I'd do something like this: 1. eliminate plants like wondering jew, paspalam, that are known to cause reactions in dogs. 2. try a shampoo like malaseb esp on the paws to eliminate fungal/bacterial infections. Then after that something like alloveen or episooth. 3. use spot-ons to control fleas. ( advantix or frontline every two weeks as for tick treatment just for a few applications then monthly if desired, i found advantix much better than frontline). 4. be really fussy about dust etc. (i had mine allergy tested & dust mites was an allergy and i think it is common. mine sleep on my bed too, so i even got dust mite covers for my pillows and the duvet as well). 5. Eliminate all foods that have wheat and corn for starters. I use eaglepack fish formula and a part barf diet. treats are liver treats only. many foods have wheat & corn esp treats. 6. Maybe try omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Megaderm is one i use occasionally. 7. i'm probably nutty but i even changes washing powder too from radiant to surf. i changed my personal deoderant from a spray to a stick in case the aerosols was annoying him. 8. for their bedding i use only natural fibres (wool or cotton) against thier skin. I found all these things helped. One of mine would wake me up every day scratching and licking his paws. He was even on cortisone for about two months, till i managed to get it undercontrol. He hasn't had cortisone for years now.

PS. mine are shih tzu crosses. one had the itching licking problem. the otherone has no problems except an overpowering "i want to lick your face" drive.

10 Week Old Westie With Constant Itch..
chuckie500 replied to maggie mae's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would check the ingredients on the packet fo dry food. make sure it doesn't contain wheat or corn. then avoid these completely. i use megaderm too. i would look for ingredients ina veyr good dry food and if you want add fresch food, use only the ingredients in the dry food. i had mine on the Eaglepack fish formula & gave them some tinned fish also. that way the protien sources are restircted to what they r already getting in the dry food. this way you cna eliminate things. if you feed a too broad menu its hard to identify what on earth it could be that causes the problem/sensitivity. -
Are There Any Good Dog Food Rolls Available?
chuckie500 replied to ashan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i'd go barf patties. depend how big your dog is re: the expense. http://barfnsw.com.au -
Look, "Lillysmum" almost choked reading about this. Imagine what chewing on a bone would do? kidding. i think it depends very much on the type of bone, size of bone cf size of dog, and the eating manner of the dog really. one of mine i nevre give chicken bones to now becasue he gulps his food down. Any bone he gets has to be big so that he just tears meat off it and just chews the ends only.

I was reading the vet Q&A section of the lastest Dog's Life magazine and it says in one of the answers to a question: "...the American Veterinary Dental Society and specialist gastro-enterologists no longer recommend bones of any kind be fed to dogs becasue fo increasing problems associated with thier feeding, such as fractured teeth, bowel obstructions and perforations, and constipation." Views?

I've tried them now & seem to be fine. It's just an easy meal & reasonably priced i think. cheaper than the barf patties but i have to add my own veggies.

At woolies I noticeed they sell a raw meat pattie for dogs by the name of Bush's Beef Steak. It looks like just a mince pattie with added vitamines. No grains. Has anyone tried this?

Eagle Pack Dog Food And Barf
chuckie500 replied to karen135's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Mine r on eaglepack fish formula as one had the itches. I found that it really helped. I will rpbably try thr lamb on soon as it is a bit cheapper (only just). I now also give them barf patties too for variation. -
Yes Eaglepack in the States has some info on their webpage about the recall. It appears that they are unaffected. http://www.eaglepack.com/Pages/recall_stmt.html

Shihzoo - mine are shih tzu crosses. DON"T hold the end or if you do wrap your fingers in a towel. I used to hold bones to as my Sam would gulp the whole thing. Then one day I was holding a bone for him and he acidently slipped into my finger and ....slice. My poor dog didn't know what happened. I was telling him (in a non verbal sense) to bite the end. It cut 2/3 of the way round the end of my finger. Cut the nail in half. I has to wrap my finger in a tea towel and drove to hospital. I was admitted that night and was in theatre for debridement and sutures. Had to stay overnight of course. I had to get a friend to look after my dogs at the last minute. Their teeth are designed to slice and tear flesh. SO be careful. Don't have my experience.

i think chicken wings are quite tough, esp the two bone joint part. i think necks would be easier to digest. mine just eat these things in 30 seconds. maybe the lamb shanks are best becasue that takes them about half an hour & then thats dinner. Call me paranoid, but i just imagine bones being stuck in there and worry they'll have an obstruction.
-
Lambs neck are a cheaper as lamb shanks r a bit expensive. Dogsrule, od they eat the entire neck bone so that nothing is left? what sort of dogs do you have?
-
mine are shih tzu crosses. They weigh about 8kg. I did try chicken wings, but one of mine is a gulper and just gulped it down in 2 secs without chewing. I thought well that didn't help your teeth and who knows how that will end up in your insides! Well he was ok, but i've been a bit cautious with bones since. I did try brisket bones but the cuts i got were very fatty. I will try pork spare ribs, they sound good. And chicken necks.
-
If you own a small dog can u pls tell me what bones you give yours and if they just chew on it or eat the whole thing. My vet advised lamb shanks and of course they only are supposed to tear the meat off it and chew a bit on the bone and not actually eat the bone itself. But I would like some other alternatives too. Thanks

Recommendations Pls/food Safe For Skin Allergies
chuckie500 replied to catjar's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I tried a good number of diets and found the Eaglepack fish one the best. So i tried to just give him just from the ingredient list on their formula. Over time i have added other things so i could see how went with them. I use it for about 60% of their food now. BUt at first it was about 95% till tings got under control. -
I have two shih tzu crosses. One had suspected allergy problems. I tried a few brands re: their sensitive formulas. I have found Eaglepack Fish recipe the best for their allergies and now will stick to it. they always like to eat it. I order a big bag & suppy tow other small dogs with it as well & all seem to do really well on it. Ages of all dogs is in the range of 3-5 years.

So glad he is better. Any idea why he was ill? something he ate?
