Dog Training In West Brisbane
Outkast1972 replied to Outkast1972's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks for the replies, I think I will check out Jane Harper, she seems to have a few fans here! Can anyone give me an idea of the cost involved? -
Hi all I have 2 naughty dogs in need of some obediance training. 1 dog is a barker, both of them don't listen, jump all over us and fight/wrestle all over the house and under our legs. I am worried someone will trip over them and injury themselves one day. I was going to go with Wagtails as they both did their basic obedience there. But wondered if there was another option that someone could recommend. Anyone used Barkbusters? Also what cost do you think I should be expecting? Thanks!

Does The Council Put Down Dogs Within A Few Days?
Outkast1972 replied to Outkast1972's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, I think you are right Wazzat and Molasses, I doubt the version I got was the truth. I think they would have had the money, they are 'CUBs' (Cashed up Bogans). My guess is the dogs didn't have any ID, tags or microchip. They got out and they didn't bother looking for a few days (to 'teach them a lesson'), then tried the council after they got worried a week later or something. I think the 'you are charged a boarding fee per day' is a much better system. It seems so sad and harsh to put down peoples pets in such a short time. There must be cases where people are away on holidays and their dogs get out, this happened to my sister. They got a call while they were interstate! My parents were looking after the dogs and they managed to open the garage door and escape! My parents picked them up a few hours later from a house down the road. The owner called my sister! -
Does The Council Put Down Dogs Within A Few Days?
Outkast1972 replied to Outkast1972's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, I totally agree and do not condone leaving them there. I just found it hard to believe that is all. But surely you'd think if the pound had contacted the owners and confirmed they were coming to get them, they would try everything to get the dogs back to their home. Not just put them down. I can't recall exactly how long he said they left them there, I think it was a few days. I thought putting them down would have been a last resort for dogs that had no owners or no hope of finding a new home. These dogs that were left there 'to teach them a lesson' were a purebreed Golden Retriever and Labrador. I mean they could have put them up for sale for $500 like the RSPCA does. Very sad. I am going to go over my dog registrations to make sure all my contact details are up to date! I would hate to miss a call from the council after hearing this stuff. One of my dogs did get out a few months ago, she dug a hole under the fence. I got a call from the council saying a local lady had her! I called her straight up to arrange a collection. -
Hello all I caught up with an old friend the other week and asked how his dogs were. He told me they were put down at the pound. He said they had escaped a few times before and this time when the council called saying their dogs were there they decided to leave them there for a few days to teach them a lesson. When they went in to collect the dogs and they were told they had been put down as no one came in to collect them. Now, I took this story with a grain of salt as I don't always believe everything this friend tells me! But I was telling a friend at work, who is very trustworthy, and a Doctor (You have to trust a Dr!). He said the same thing happened to his friend in Townsville a few years ago. There dog got out, he had been looking for it for days, he went to the pound to see if his dog was there to be told 'yes it was found and we held it for 3 days and put it down as no one had claimed it'. The dog was registered and the council claimed they had tried to ring and couldn't get through so they decided it was an abandoned dog. Are these sorts of stories true or are people exaggerating, getting things wrong, making things up etc??? I found the first story hard to believe but after hearing the second one I am starting to worry maybe councils do do this sort of thing? I would hate to imagine one of my dogs getting out, being pick up by the council then put down in a few days! These stories really bothered and upset me! Thanks, C

Thanks for that. I had a feeling they were not removable. Seems like a silly way of doing it. What was wrong with the old metal dog tags? I'll give the council a call. I hope they don't charge me for new ones! I imagine people with large dogs could go thru several dog tags as there puppies grow!?

Hello all I have bought my dogs new collars. Their Brisbane City Council plastic dog tags are still on the old ones. I have no idea how to remove the tags! Can anyone tell me if they can be removed and placed on a new collar? And if yes, how to do it! Thanks! Conway

Allergic Reaction After Having Vaccination
Outkast1972 replied to Outkast1972's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks for all the replies folks! Karla's face was almost back to normal when I collected her from the vets, by the next day she has back to normal. I contacted the breeder I got her from (I think she is on this forum) and she said she gets her dogs vaccinated every 3 years and avoids the Fort Dodge brand. So I will be doing the same! Baby arrived saturday, 12 days overdue. Mum and baby are still in hospital, a little worse for wear but doing ok. Thanks again! Conway -
Hi all I took my little Shih Tzu for her C5 vaccination this morning. A few hours later I noticed her face had swollen up! I took her back to the vet, she said it's an allergic reaction to the vaccination. Poor thing, she has had 2 more injections to help the swelling. Anyone ever had this happen to their dog? Not only that my wife is in hospital in labour as I type! I was concerned about leaving the dog unattended while I go back to the hopsital. So I have left her at the vets so they can monitor her. I won't tell my wife as I am sure she doesn't need that to worry about! What a stressful day!

Hello all Anyone have any advice on how to deal with a new neighbours noisy dog!? New people moved in about 9 months ago. I thought it was great when I saw their cute little dog, I thought it may be a new friend for my 2! But the novelty soon wore off when the new neighbour began barking at everything! It has a very high pitched bark that drives us nuts. It goes on a lot during the day and night, sometimes waking me up. I don't blame the dog, the owners don't seem to pay it much attention, I have never seen it leave the yard. It doesn't seem to get walked or much other exercise, it is an outside dog so it spends 100% of its time in the small yard. I have never heard the people do a thing when it is barking. One of my dogs now barks a lot more then she used too, as she goes off when she hears the new neighbours dog go off. I understand many dogs bark, including one of mine. But atleast we do something about it by telling her off and bringing her in if she keeps it up. But it really bugs me when people just ignore it and do nothing with no concern for the people around them. I can't understand how the barking doesn't annoy them! Anyway, I know the obvious thing to do is go and talk to them about it, but I have only spoken to them once. They don't seem very sociable and I would be really uncomfortable going over to complain! I am generally not the sort of person to make complaints so I've never had to deal with this sort of thing before. Sometimes I feel like making a complaint to the council, but it seems unfair doing that before letting them know! It would be good if you could make a suggestion to Bark Busters and they go over an tell them neighbours suggest you need our help! Any other ideas? Thanks!

Hello all I am using Advantix on my Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu/Maltese and they are both covered in fleas! Seems like a waste of money to me. My sister gave me a packet of Capstar to try, but it is for large dogs, would a 1/4 tablet be ok for my little dogs? Thanks, Conway
-
Ok, that sounds like a good idea too. So you just stick the paper straight onto the plastic door? Does it matter what colour?
-
It is the clear plastic type door. Yes, I think she has been hit by it! (I shouldn't laugh but it does look pretty funny when it happens!), when we first got her she did follow our other dog in and the swinging door hit her. I think you are right, this may have scared her from using it again. I will try you suggestions, I'll tie the door up tonight and get her use to coming in and out that way, then progress as you said. Thanks! Conway

Hello all I can't teach my puppy to use the Doggy Door on the back security screen. She is a Shih Tzu and 8 1/2 months old now, I have been trying to teach her since we got her at 6 months. Our other dog learnt to use it in a few minutes, I even thought seeing the other dog use it would give her the idea. I have tried using treats in front of the doggy door and calling her thru, I pick her up and put her thru, I even open the flap and she jumps thru, but she won't go thru it herself! Any ideas?

I will be using it on my Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu/Maltese. ATM I am using an ice cream bucket in the bath tub so anything will be better! I will check out the Supermarkets and Hardware stores....

Does anyone know where you can get those Shower hose attachments for dog washing, so you can connect the shower head to the bath or sink tap? I have been looking around for them in Brisbane but no one seems to stock them anymore. If anyone knows where you can get them, either online or in Brisbane, please let me know! Thanks, Conway
