I run Cattle Dogs in Dog Sports luvsablue, but I know they are not the dog for everyone.Cheers Sharon Hi Sharon, Point taken but I wonder why CD handlers/owners often say just what you said. Maybe because it is true? :D Sure they can present certain challenges, but the rewards are great! Regards, luvsablue

Hi Everyone, I found the hardest pattern for the cloths was a circle with the scented one in the middle. She'd go round and round the circle, and miss the one in the middle, at first. She's ok with any pattern now. luvsablue, and Beckie the Bluey

Hi perfect partners, My head was spinning with all the information so no it doesn't ring a bell I'd be no good as a witness in a detective story. We'll catch up at trials this year maybe are you doing any? Beckie is a cattle dog, Sunday she was in the car Saturday crated, as it was too warm for cars. luvsablue & Beckie the Bluey

Hi xena98 Sometimes I practice with them close in, then after that she seems to be able to do six without a mistake at full distance. It was the straight line which was the problem with my dog too. She's a cattle dog and also she used to run out to the sendaway area in a wide arc not straight either. So I practised getting her to run out to a ball, no problem with straight then! luvsablue & Beckie the Bluey

Hi xena98 I had a fair bit of trouble with the no 2 article also. I changed my hand signal and now it seems to be working ok. Maybe you could try a different hand signal? Beckie seems to know the no 1 signal (which is right hand on the right side of her face), and no 3 (which is left hand on the left side of her face). When I was aiming for no 2 whichever hand I used she would go to no 1 (if right hand on right of her face) and go to no 3 if I tried left hand on right side of her face. I guessed it was the hand being beside her face which caused her problems, so I put my left hand above her head palm down and when I said fetch I moved it forward above her head, and bingo!! She understood. Now we have three different turns, each with its own command (no 1 "watch", no 2 "heel" and no 3 "back"). And three different hand signals. luvsablue Beckie the Bluey

Uta is a very good communicator and has a wealth of experience in many areas of dog training. I didn't know anything except for what I'd read in books. But she explained in clear and simple terms classical and operant conditioning and how oc works with clicker training. Then we went outside and she worked with the people who had brought their dogs. She was able to demonstrate by handling some of the dogs herself, which she did very well. It can be tricky when someone else takes a dog but she made it look easy. I met Megan on Saturday and I'm not sure who Perfect Partners was! I was so exhausted by then I forgot to ask around!! Luvsablue Beckie the Bluey

I think it's important to teach the dog to look at the article, praise for a good long look before you send him, or dont send but then turn to another one and repeat the exercise. I always train with the articles clearly visible to the dog. I don't train for distance, but gradually make them further away as the dog learns the three turns and the look. I place the articles in a circle, like a clock face and turn to one or another until the dog can turn with me, sit straight and on the hand signal look at the one I indicate. There are about 6 of them, at eg 12oclock, 3oclock and so on. Then progress to the 3 in a line but stand about 6 metres from no 2. When the dog can retrieve the 3 move to 7 or 8 metres. Wait until you get a calm fixed stare at the article then send. Remember have them visible to the dog. After some time the dog will be able to retrieve them without being able to see them. luvsablue, & Beckie the Bluey (aka OC Beckham UDX)

Look forward to meeting you too. Are you taking your dog both days? Unfortunately I won't meet Megan as I think she's going Saturday. I'm observing both days, although I am taking the dog, she will be in her crate out on the verandah luvsablue

Hi Megan & Perfect Partners, I'm looking forward to meeting both of you at the seminar/s. luvsablue

Hi Seita, I watched all the films on your channel, they were great. You can definitely see improvement as Ella progresses through her training and trials. luvsablue

Training A Dog To Heel

Good point luvsdogs' check chain jerk and pull does make them lag, and they look bored and miserable as well. from luvsablue -
Training A Dog To Heel
luvsablue replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My main building block is to mark the behaviour with praise, food a game, when the dog is in the correct heel position, and to teach attention, watch etc first and as a separate thing, when the dog can watch you while it is walking beside you you start heel work. A bit further down the track I start circling. It is vital that you do the same footwork for every turn, the dog learns these and gets to know a left, a right a halt etc. So I would suggest is teaching your novice handlers the footwork, they can practice this without their dogs. Each handler/dog team will need to adopt the best footwork for them. You can watch and suggest things as they progress. But praise is vital every time the dog is doing it right, and especially after a correction when it is out of position Hope this helps luvsablue -
This isn't really a dog topic; just wanted to wish each and every one of you DOLers a happy Christmas, and a successful New Year. I hope all your resolutions and objectives work for you in 2010 From luvsablue and Beckie the Bluey.

Hi gsdog2, Really glad you like IB. Please tell, what's Dogwise? Because I'm trying to find out about a Gottrfried Dildei video, and Leerburg and Canine Training Systems don't mention it in their catalogues. Dogwise might know about it luvsablue

Mary Ray "Obedience Mary's Way" Ivan Balabanov "Obedience Without Conflict", 1 Clear Communication, 2 The Game 3 The Retrieve and there's another one on the sendaway and stand on the move Gottfried Dildei "Basic Obedience" and "Advanced Obedience". These are all DVDs. luvsablue

Hi Tiggy, Yes I do that fairly often. When I do it in the park or at home I need to tie my girl to a fence or something. If I don't she joins in and I don't want to make her do a lot of repetitive practice. Nothing is more guaranteed to turn her off, especially heelwork. From luvsablue

If you need to remove the thing that stops your DVD player from playing other regions just contact the store where you bought it or the maker. I had an US zone movie, I contacted Samsung and they gave me some numbers as follows:- (with no disk in the player), press subtitle, key in 768849 then press subtitle again, and bingo it would play any region. Every brand has its own formula for lifting the restriction, luvsablue, Victoria

Hello everyone, I have to brag about Portland's Saturday Obedience Trial, (28th November), because I got another UDX pass (that makes 6) and I really enjoyed myself and so did my dog, judging by the way she was jumping around and wagging her tail. She's nearly 11 years old but acting younger every day. luvsablue and Beckie the Bluey

Portland Obedience Trials
luvsablue replied to luvsablue's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hey we're the rusty ones! I've been sick and it's been too hot to practise. I'll have to miss the FOO trial on Tuesday night, but I don't care, as long as I can get to Portland. I'll have to put her in squeaks and all, I'd better pack an oil can. luvsablue -
Portland Obedience Trials
luvsablue replied to luvsablue's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hello Dogdude, I'm glad you like it and have done well there. I've only been to the last 3 trials, and have always been entered in UDX, consequently I haven't had any qualifying scores, (because passes in UDX are few and far between for most of us.) But my dog has always worked very well and I reckon that means doing well. If you get my meaning, luvsablue -
Hello folks, Is anyone going to Portland Trials next weekend? It is a good venue to finish the year, friendly and excellent grounds. Obedience in the morning and Agility in the afternoon, Sat and Sun, Cheers, From luvsablue

Yeah Dogdude, Thats good but if you mean physically roll them onto a hip, that's fine but not in a trial, because if under some or maybe most judges, you physically handle your dog, they'll take off behaviour points or ask you to "please leave the ring" It's in the rule book. But if it is just for training the down that's different. If you want to do "hip rolls" in trials better add a cue word. luvsablue
