  1. Just a comment on horses again. Horses are often cross bred to gain a particular type of horse for a particular activity. Probably the best know of these is the Anglo Arab, a type not a breed. I appreciate that many like to know temperament but horse temperament is significantly effected by handling and training, often more so than breeding and this may be because they are technically lower on the food chain, therefore more reactive to their environment. Temperament aside, as I said, riders are often looking for their horses to undertake a certain purpose and will breed to purpose, rather than stick to breed registration. There is also the compounding issue of $'s with horses too. I considered getting back into competitive dressage the year before last, but for me to find a suitable young warmblood with a good basic education, sound confirmation and potential to reach the level I wanted it would have set me back around $20-$30K. However if I had looked for a 1st cross warmblood with similar criteria, I may have been able to find something closer to $10k. Horses for courses - sorry couldn't resist the pun.
  2. CDL? Guilty! I think my colleagues really hate asking the obligatory 'what did you do on the weekend' question on Monday mornings, I can go on for a while about the adventures of Bronte. Cashew - nothing infuriates me more than seeing doggy doo doo at the dog park, how hard is it I ask. One of my greatest fears is forgetting/running out of baggies a the park.
  3. Dogs have been reg purebreds. One and only cat a moggie. One horse was a purebred and two were/are crosses. Its a little different in the horse world though, there are a lot of deriviative and part registrations. My current boy, although retired is a part Arabian, part Australian Stock Horse and he's Palomino. So he was triple registered, two breed registrations and one colour registration. Made for very very busy competition life and lots of fun.
  4. Whipitgood, I started a thread a couple of months ago on these guys, I love them too. If you search Patterdale you might find it and there was some suggestion as to some Victorian based breeders, but primarily as working dogs.
  5. Not that I'm the same Smooth Collie person, but I have one for mine. I'm a little so-so on the Furminator. It does get a fair amount of coat out, but I think it leaves the top coat a little rough to touch in patches. I guess that suggests its cutting it unevenly sometimes. I prefer a basic wire rake brushy thing unless she's actually shifting a lot of coat. Cat seems to love it, but she likes all brushing, she's a tart.
  6. Hugs to Charlie! Hugs to you peoples too! I really hope that he gets better and they can determine some sort of effective treatment plan for him.
  7. Oh no, I saw the update at work and had to shut it down because I knew I couldn't read the thread without losing it. Atleast he had sometime time with his person before he went and Indie you looked after him so well and with such dedication. Our old woofy friends are waiting to meet you at the bridge Reg.
  8. I am sponsored by work to spend two days a year volunteering my services/labour to a community benefitting cause. Some people sort food and clothing for the homeless or make/paint toys for disadvantaged kids and some people do things like volunteer at the RSPCA or the Lost Dogs Home. Me being me, I also want to volunteer to a doggy or animal based organisation, but which one? I live in Melbourne, can travel to get there and I'm pretty active and mobile. Does anyone have any suggestions? The Lost Dogs and Lort Smith are close to me, but I'm not settled on either of those at this stage. I don't want this to turn into an organisation bashing thread, as all I want to do is help out where I can and perhaps make even one pooch's day a little brighter. Does anyone know if GAP Vic takes volunteers? It doesn't have to be working with the animals directly either by the way. Right, I'll leave it with you., back to work.
  9. BBB, I was tired for the first three weeks when Bronte still got up at night, but she went from two toilet stops in the night to one after about a week and it got better and better from there. Keep at it!
  10. Sounds like he wore himself out and forgot about his mental assault on you when he returned to the laundry. Ah puppies, don't you love them.
  11. Ok, you beat me. Is he back in the other room by himself or is he on the tiles with you?
  12. Personally I would wait for a reasonable break in the barking (if you get one) then I'd go into him. But I wouldn't fuss him much, just stay low key and calm, talk to him, let him calm down and then after a while leave again. If he's quiet after a little while go in again and repeat. Eventually wait longer and longer before going to him, but don't rush this. Of course if you go in and he's asleep, just back out the door again. The first time you do this, you may only get a very short break in the barking, but it does have to be a distinct break of maybe 5-10 secs or so, it really depends how hysterical he is. If he's just barking to test you, you'll get a longer break, if he's worked himself up, it won't be long. Don't go in when he's making a noise. Worst case one trick might be to 'accidentally on purpose' distract him. Like drop a book or turn on the radio or something, this might make him stop and think, a bit like blowing on a baby's face.
  13. TLC, you can see how stretched out she has had to flatten herself to eekkk out as much flight distance as she could. She looks like she's even pointing her back tootsies to make it last. I love it, its hilarious and a brilliant shot.
  14. Whoops! Check out his ears, awww, he's got some growing to do to fit those. Wery cute.
  15. Thanks SBT and great questions Erny. This has helped heaps.
  16. Hi Shelle, it sounds a little bit more positive. It actually sounds like exactly like what Bronte did when she was very little, about three months old. She slipped on tiles and twisted her knee. We had some anti inflams, a week of rest and then a week of ever so gently increasing her exercise back to normal. She recovered very well and quite fast. Basically what Nekhbet said though. One of my greatest frustrations with anti inflams in horses is that the damn things think they are feeling great and tear off and be nut bags when you are trying to rest them. And yep, they even do this when they are stabled. More hugs and tummy tickles to Shyla!
  17. Dog electrolyte rookie question - Do you use the sachets or the liquid? Even though some of the websites say its for cattle or pig scour, I assume its the same product? Do you modify the dilution rates at all or is the dosage suitably managed by intake amount associated with the animal's size. Lastly, do you offer fresh water at the same time or make the electrolyte the first drink and after that offer fresh water? I think I'll be all sorted after these questions. Thanks
  18. Thanks SBT123. Anniek, do you know if the issue is with Monosodium Citrate, Disodium Citrate or Trisodium Citrate? Just doing a little more research now, but it threw me this curly question. Both Lectade and Vytrate contain Potassium Citrate, so it looks like those manufacturers are actively trying to avoid the kidney stone issues.
  19. Thanks for the warning Anniek, I'll definitely look out for that. Thanks LC & SBT123, where do you get yours from, online or do your basic local pet suppliers sell it?
  20. Hi all I'm considering getting Bronte some electrolytes as we head into Feb. This is for a few reasons, 1. the hot weather takes it out of the poor love, 2. we have a big Feb with a couple of events including our first herding clinic, 3. we are going to do quite a bit of travelling in Feb and while she is now a good traveller after I've changed cars, I still want to be able to supplement her if she turns into Droolly Dora again (very poor traveller until 10/11 months). Thinking back I probably should have got these into her after her car trips as a pup as her drooling was out of control - can't change the past though. So, has anyone got any suggestions as to a good electrolyte that they have some experience with? I know horse electrolytes, but not the doggy versions. The only one I'm faintly familiar with is Recharge Greyhound, but that's because they have a horse version. Thanks

  23. I also have a small yard but Bronte gets a lot of exercise so I don't really send her because of that. I didn't start her until she was older though, about 8 months. I wanted to establish independence at home first and then she suffered and injury and had to be confined for quite a while. Now Bronte goes one day a week on Wednesdays just to break up the working week for her. I pay for ten days in bulk and it works out to $35 a day. She gets one to two walks, plays with dogs of like nature and size, gets a weekly brush and massage and is encouraged to have a kip. That being said she only rests about every three or four times as she is the life of the party. The handlers use her as a dog to teach some walking manners to other dogs and she is known as the energiser bunny that wears out all of the other dogs. She loves it and ges very 'chatty' when we pull into the carpark.
  24. This is such a shock. Rocco and his little mate Ralph constantly provided we DOL'ers heartwarming laughs and entertainment. My heart goes out to his entire human clan and Ralph, let it be soon that you can happily remember all the lovely times you had together. Be free with all our past friends to play with.
