  1. Beautiful photos, you must be kept very busy with those two Zeke looked a wise old man, all your dogs are stunning.
  2. I am so sorry for your loss RIP Hero As an owner of a crossbreed dog that I adopted from a pound these sort of horror stories send cold shivers down my spine. My dog is chipped and registered as a Bull Arab x but I know nothing of her blood lines. How would I protect her from misidentification? She is a much loved member of the family and I never have her outside unless I am with her, she is crated when I am at work and always on the leash in public, we do obedience training and I keep her socialised but have no papers to prove what she is/isnt.
  3. Wow, how did such a brilliant organisation remain so quiet in in the Australian dog world ;) ;) I have seen camp dogs first hand when I worked in outback South Australia and was dismayed by the amount of mange and other health issues they were suffering from, some of the younger people laughingly called them pinkies due to their lack of fur and angry sores they were covered in. Any organisation trying to help these silent victims of neglect and ignorance has my full support Please note I am not making a judgement on the owners of these dogs they are as much victim to treatable diseases etc as their dogs.
  4. I actually find it unfortunate Ravyk that you wait a few days until after the event before you decide to have a go at people about what happened at Sundays meet. If you had a problem with certain dogs or with what people were doing for goodness sake why not say it to them at the time rather than choose to post days later when it is harder for people to have a constructive conversation and bring the situation to a peaceful resolution without making people feel that they have been personally attacked by your comments, what a shame that a lovely social event has descended into a school yard frackas. No dog is perfect and neither are the owners but lets have a bit of tolerence and understanding, your dogs are no exception.
  5. Sweet Molly, rest in peace I am so sorry for your loss, its not fair to lose two so close together
  6. I work at the chapel complex of a large cemetery in Adelaide, this morning it was stinking hot in our car park by 9am. I was in the courtyard area looking at the goldfish in our pond when people were arriving for an early funeral, an elderly couple were standing in the car park looking a little bit stressed by the heat, I went over to see if they were okay. They had brought their dog a sweet old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with them as they lived in the hills and had been scared to leave the dog home with the Catastrophic fire warning in effect. So they had brought him to the funeral with them but had given no thought as to what to do with the old boy whilest they were in the funeral, the husband said he would be okay in the car :D but the wife(thankfully) had reservations, the old man thought dog would be fine as they had parked in the shade and he had put a freezer block in the backseat next to the dog. When we walked over to the car all the windows were up and the little dog was sitting on the floor in the back of the car already looking stressed, it was already very hot in the car I assured the old man that there was no way the dog could stay in the car as he would die. Long story short Sammy the dog came into the chapel office with me for the next couple of hours while the couple went to the funeral but it could have ended very differently if I hadn't been practicing work avoidence techniques. What worries me is that they may do it again and not be so fortunate, Sammy was obviously well loved, immaculately groomed and a sweet old fellow who took being handled by stangers in his stride. I gave them a little talk about dogs in cars in hot weather but I really think they had been so scared by the media and the fire danger warnings on the radio that they had put no thought into what to do with Sammy other than get him out of the fire risk area when truth be told he would have been far safer left at home. Sorry for the long post but it gave me the cold chills and nobody else at work seemed to realise Sammy was nearly a dead dog
  7. Rest in peace Freddie, I am sure they supply you workers sheep at the bridge so you can keep your hand(paw)in.
  8. I flew Abbie from Sydney to Adelaide with Jetpets, they were great and coped well with my many phone calls and put my mind at ease. the only scary moment was when i went pick her up and the guy at the freight terminal said there had been no dogs on the Sydney flight, how he hadn't noticed the big Bull Arabx pup in the freight area i will never know
  9. My neighbour has bred Borzoi for a number of years but has been unable to show for a few years due to ill health so I have found myself handling them for her at shows, it has been a steep learning curve but I am having fun but I think it must be hard having a novice handler as each week I seem to do something wrong in the ring
  10. I am thinking the Borzois will be staying home as well, even if it cools down later in the evening it will be too hot to put them in the trailer and taking them Im thinking. glad it is a two day(night) show.
  11. Yogi and I will be there(and William)
  12. Merry Christmas to you Troy and all my friends on DOL have a wonderful christmas, I am looking forward to 2011 on DOL
  13. Parson Jack Russell Terrier? And maybe the Danny Dinmont Terrier(not sure I spelt that right)
  14. People sicken me, Doug is a disabled dog plagued by birth defects caused by............humans, we should not make a freak show of him, i hope he is not in pain
  15. I think that as dog owners we have to accept the fact that not all dogs are suitable for dog parks, it is up to us to put the safety of our dogs and other peoples dogs at the fore front and not take some dogs to the park, dog parks shouldn't be used to socialise dogs that haven't yet learnt manners and socialisation, dogs that have no recall are also a hazard to themselves and others. My Whippet loves to play with his friends at DOL meets but I would be very cautious of letting him loose at some of the more crowded parks as he does zoomies with other dogs and could hurt himself or others, if he was in a fight he would come off second best as although he thinks he is a toughie he is like tissue paper. My Bull arab x is never going to be a social butterfly, she loves her dog brother Yogi and they play nicely and she has some dogs that she plays with but she is not ever going to back down from a more aggresive dog, as her owner I am not going to ever set her up to fail in any way and she misses out on nothing by not going to dog parks
  16. The thought of dog fighting makes me sick to the stomach and the monsters that do fight their dogs are the scum of the earth and I hope that there is an especially deep pit in hell for them. I am not going to watch the video as the images will haunt me. The dogs are the victims of crime and I wish that they would be treated as such. The Michael Vick Pit Bulls that were seized when his fighting ring was busted were the first dogs to be rehabilitated rather than being immediatly put down after the court case, 47 out of the 49 siezed dogs were successfully rehabilated thanks to groups such as Best Friends Animal Sanctuary an Bad Rap Pit Bull Rescue, more Fighting Dogs are now being rescued and rehabilitated but dog fighting is endemic in certain parts of the USA and looks .like it will be for some time.
  17. I would have liked to have seen a five YEAR sentence, but knowing that to be an impossible outcome I am pleased that he has been given jail time. The judges comments show him to be a compassionate person with a realisation that animals deserve protection from monstrous acts of cruelty ;)
  18. I would take this puppy to the vets for a blood test and full check up, pups dont usually"fall over" and he sounds unwell to me. it is better to be safe than sorry good luck with your pup, I am sure all will be well but h is only a baby and needs lots of rest and love
  19. Sometimes there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel but everyday is a journey and your beloved dog would want you to continue on your path and find a way to enjoy your life again. Your dog may not be with you any more but you certainly carry the love and memories you shared in your heart, as Raz said please speak to somebody as grief feels so suffocating and it helps to find a sympathetic ear
  20. There are some wonderfully helpful hound people here in South Australia I have been given great guidence and encouragement by people, it is just hard to know everything about showing in one season but I am getting there Please dont let my gazebo comments put anybody off South Aussie dog shows.
  21. I have been guilty of putting my gazebo up in a "reserved" position at SACA, dutifully I took it down and went to the second row behind some lovely Wolfhound people. to be honest as a newcomer to shows gazebo placement is frought with terror and unknown pitfalls. Dog showing should come with a manual of what not to do's as every week I seem to commit another faux pas , some people are however very welcoming and supportive, some not so.
  22. My prayers are with you for the safe return of Tessa, I hate storms
  23. I had never seen or heard of a front clipping harness until I brought home Abbie from Canterbury pound. All my dogs had walked nicely on martingale collars or my larger dogs on slip collars, then I had to change my methods and find a way to stop a steam train puller like I had never experienced. After trying a few different collars/harnesses I was told about front connecting harnesses by my dog trainer and I now love them, I enjoy my walks with Abbie without constantly having to correct her and have my arm pulled out of its socket and the results were almost instant, I would certainly give them a try with other dogs in the future
  24. This girl has been given the love and dignity by you that all our seniors should have I am sure her remaining days of love and care will be the best she has ever had, sending gentle whippety hugs to you and her
  25. Personally I would never mention the "P" word any where near the pup-at vets, obedience, registration, all that needs to be said is that pup is a bull breed x. There is no doubting or denying that Pit Bulls can be dog aggressive but there are many ways of turning a Pit Bull type dog into a canine good citizen. There is a Pit Bull rescue group on the internet called bad rap, they give many hints and training advice for bull breeds. Dont buy into the theory that all Pit Bulls are bad this is simply not true, what is true that owning some sorts of dog require the owner to step up and be more pro-active when it comes to training and obedience, never let this type of dog off leash in public, accpet that these dogs are never going to be dog park butterflies and pre-empt volatile situations with other dogs, a Pit Bull may not start the fight but it sure as heck will finish it and its first fight in public is a signed death warrent. Goodluck with this pup and dont judge it too harshly, like all pups it needs guidance, training and most importantly love and kindness( the two things too many pittie pups never recieve)
