I am so sorry for your loss, my sincere condolonces to you and your family at this tragic time.

No excuses or sob stories make this less than the act of a cold hearted, monster of a person. Often a person is purely and simply evil we shouldn't try to find excuses for their behaviour we should just as a society make it impossible for them to bring more pain and torture into others lives

I stupidly watched the video on facebook of poor Spike being beaten That woman deserves to be put against the wall and shot along with her neanderthal husband who tried to tell the tv reporters that the dog fell down the stairs and thats how he hurt himself. Poor little Spike had been at the vets many times in the past few months with fractures and breaks, this brings to question should vets have a duty of care to the animal to report suspected acts of cruelty and abuse to authorities but I suppose the abusers would then not take their victims to the vet-not that many would anyway. I despair for the helpless animals in this sick, cruel world

Jed, what an incitful, knowledgeable post, I also think we are fighting to save all breeds as at any moment public opinion and the media could turn against any of our chosen breeds, we need to be united as dog owners to stamp out the idiot/criminal element that want dogs as weapons and do torturous and inhumane things to them to make them damaged and vicious animals that are driven to attack. How we can do this is a problem for more knowledgeable people than myself but I would love to see the day that dog owners respect that we are the caretakers of the dog and do our be best by them and for them and not treat them as throw away toys to do our worst with. I am all for psl(people specific legislation)never for bsl as it is a dangerous path that will lead to the eventual destruction of many great and noble breeds. The general public are niave and ignorant to what breeds dogs are, when I walk my dogs in public I know that I am walking a Whippet, a Kelpie and a Bull Arabx comments I have received by the public have suggested I am walking at various times a Tasmanian Tiger or Greyhound(the Whippet) a wolf or small brown Husky(the Kelpie) and a Pit bull, Mastiff or spawn of the devil(the Bull Arabx).

BTW, when was the last time a big dog was mauled to death by 2 small dogs? Not the dog's fault, of course. Big and little dogs have no concept of size when it comes to fighting. However, big dog owners have a greater responsibility to prevent this sort of situation from occurring as the consequences (ie the death of an animal) are so much greater. ;) No, big dog owners dont have a greater responsibility than small dog owners to keep their dogs contained ALL dog owners should be responsible for their dogs welfare and wellbeing. What part of this incident dont you understand Mum to Emma-the small dog dug under the fence into the other dogs yard, nothing to do with the size of the dogs involved at all. You are coming across in your posts as a dog racist and wont look past breeds and sizes please try to educate yourself that size is not the issue here. No where did it say the dog dug under the fence. It was loose - yes, that's inexcusable too. And probably wandered up an open driveway. Yes, all dogs should take responsibility for their dog's actions. BUT if a big dog attacks a little dog, it will most likely kill it. If a little dog attacks a big dog, bites that will heal are the result. Can you not see the difference? If you can't, you're obviously one of those big dog owners who rests confident with the knowledge that nothing with kill THEIR beloved pet. Small dog owners don't have that security. I am not a big dog owner, I have a Whippet, a Kelpie and a Bull Arabx puppy. during the years my family and I have had dogs we have had everything from a Maltese x to a Staghound, they all have been treated exactly the same and they have all been expected to behave the same. there should be no distinction between big/little dogs anywhere in the community and as dog owners we should all be trying to break down prejudices about dogs not encouraging them. BTW- the most aggresive arguementative dog we ever had was the Maltese x!!

What was a Rotty and RB cross doing loose in her front yard anyway? What if a child had come past and tried to swing on her fence? Would the dogs have lunged at that intruder too? At the end of the day it's not how DA some breeds are, it's the damage certain breeds are capable of doing if something provokes them. And before you ask: She described her first dog as an "an RSPCA special" that she had owned for 10 years. "It's meant to be a Rhodesian Ridgeback-cross but it's got lots of different varieties in it. The other is a rotty (Rottweiler)," she said. The dogs attacked another dog that invaded their yard, that does not mean they will bite a child, how many times does it have to be said. Every time a dog fight or DA thread appears we have the same comments. It matters not what breed the dogs were, another dog entered their yard. I'm not sure what the point is mentioning the breeds in your post. My small dogs wouldn't take kindly to a strange dog crawling under my fence, they certainly are not child eaters, same goes for my 40 kg boy. On neutral ground or supervised it could have been a very different story. At the end of the day it's not how DA some breeds are, it's the damage certain breeds are capable of doing if something provokes them. Big dogs - if provoked - are capable of doing more damage than little dogs. It's that simple. And that's why I mentioned it. The owners of big dogs (irrespective of breed) should appreciate this and take appropriate care to avoid a situation as happened today (ie the small dog died). I am curious as to what sort of dog you have Mum to Emma as I remember a thread a while ago where you were getting the boot in about Greyhounds/sighthounds and how they are capable of dangerous behaviours now you have moved your bias against all big dogs The dogs were in their own yard and the woman was bitten by the little terrier(RIP little guy) this doesn't mean the big dogs are DA it was just a tragic accident and one dog dead is enough surely we dont want the media to whip up a public outcry for the other two dogs to be killed as well. Remember Mum to Emma if people like you get your way, bsl will end up banning dogs altogether. You may not like big dogs but once they are all banned what breeds will be next.

Meet Jess, my 16 year old Kelpie. I have had Jess since she was 6 weeks old when I got given her at a farm clearance sale. We have been through a marriage, a baby, a divorce and the death of some of my other dogs together. I feel she has been faithfully next to me when no-one else was sometimes and she is my darling shadow, every night she sleeps next to my bed and keeps the young dogs in order

My old Kelpie is covered in fatty lymponas, I used to rush to the vet every time I discovered another one. Then my sweet old Staghound developed a hard lump under her armpit and it was cancer unfortunately. It had a much different feel to the fatty lymponas that I could roll around under the skin a little bit like a marble in a sock(couldn't think of a better way to explain it ) It didnt really move when I applied pressure to it and I just felt a feeling of doom when I discovered it. If your oldie is happy and healthy in all other ways dont worry too much if you cant get straight to the vet I think.

Thanks for all the positive comments Abbie certainly is beautiful inside and out! I guess it was a shock to think that anybody would think she was anything but the sweet boofa I know her to be. We will be at the next DOL meet, Earl looks like he needs a big puppy squeeze from me

What wonderful news for you and Mya Our rescue girl from Sydney arrived last Wednesday and has given us so much love and settled in beautifully with family life, I am sure Mya will too. There is something extra special about the ones that nearly didn't make it almost like they know how close they came to rainbow bridge, Abbie has a look of wide eyed wonder as she sees new things and has new experiences. I now realise what people feel like when they are discriminated against and I will remember to be less judgemental myself. I am continually reminding Yogi to play gently with Abbie as she is a gentle boofa, I was worried it was going to be the other way around My mother had a Staffie when I was young but I dont remember people being wary of her, I guess it was before the media crucified the bully breeds.Next time someone says anything rude about her I shall be ready with a response! eta-ignore the date on the photo, every time I change the battery I forget to corect the date

Yesterday I took Yogi Whippet and Abbie BullArab for a walk down at the beach, they were both on the leash and behaving well, I dont think Abbie has had many ouitings in her past and she was making very happy woo woo noises paddling in the shallows A woman was walking near us suddenly decided she had to come over and talk, she immediatly patted Yogi and told him he was lovely and should come home with her before he was a victim of the violent pit bull!!!! Abbie was wagging her tail and standing next to Yogi waiting for a pat and the woman pushed her head away and said "urgh, ugly dog". I was so taken aback I couldnt think of what to say or do other than keep walking and bite my tongue as the only ugliness near us was her and her attitude, I felt so annoyed by the whole incident as Yogi actually hates strangers touching him and Abbie loves people and pats/kisses. We were victims of a dog racist and the only one of us that measured up was the Whippet

1080 is a cruel, horrible barbaric way to poison foxes and dingo's and should be outlawed. I saw a Kelpie die of 1080 poisoning many years ago and it has haunted me ever since, my ex father in law shot her, at the time(coming from the city) I was shocked that he could do that to one of his dogs but now know it was the kindest thing to do. The bone could be relevent as often the farmer will put the 1080 in a meaty bone or rabbit carcasse depending on what they are trying to bait.A dog can also become poisoned if it eats a rabbit etc that has been poisoned with 1080.

After recieving some VERY negative pms (and some positive ones) I feel I have to state my position. I believe in 100% de-sexing and vaccinations of the cats and dogs at Moorook, no animal should be rehomed until this is done No exceptions!!! However if I go in to this situation with all guns blazing I will be no help to the animals at all, food and bedding is an neccessity to those in need at the shelter right now. If the situation is as grim as it has been suggested it wont help at all if we are seen as the enemy, so lets take small steps and hope that we can help them improve conditions

I have decided to continue with my food/bedding donation drive, I will tell people that it is a shelter needing help, I dont know the answer to the de-sexing program there other than using positive, pro-active encouragement. I do know by not doing anything to help the animals the only ones to suffer at the end of the day are them. Donating money to the shelter would probably not be the best, but a direct donation to the vet at Two Wells(I can pm people his name) towards de-sexing costs would maybe be the best if that is what people would like to do I realise I am helping a shelter with big issues but putting aside all the facts and problems, it is the dogs and cats in there at the moment I want to help, they have no choice in being there and until we can do any thing else we need to be sure of their welfare.

Oh dear, I didn't mean to open a can of worms, I just thought it would help the dogs and cats at the shelter if the food /bedding donations could be made and it seemed a sensible way to help by placing donation boxes in high profile places around Adelaide. After speaking to the woman on the phone I felt she was very pro-active in wanting to de-sex the animals in her care and was aiming for a 100% de-sexing rate. I am sorry if I have done the wrong thing by trying to collect food for the animals, I feel I have come across as naive and gullible which I hope I am not, but if we do nothing to try and change the situation for these animals is that the right thing to do either, I just dont know

This morning I was talking to the lady who runs the Moorook shelter in the Riverland of South Australia and was appalled to find out the supplier who had been donating food for the dogs now wanted $1000 for each delivery of dry food she took (it is expired stock) I would like to leave boxes for people to donate dog/cat food at various locations around Adelaide but need help with suggestions as to where I could do this, I was thinking of approaching vet clinics and pet food suppliers and maybe dog obedience clubs? Moorook is a no kill shelter run by volunteers and is non-profit, it takes in dogs and cats from a large area of South Australia but due to its location I think it is at a disadvantage re food donations, I am happy to make a run up there once a month or so with food and bedding donations, I will be approaching linen supply companies to see if they would be willing to donate old towels and blankets but I would love people to help me come up with some positive ideas as to how else we can help. Moorook shelter does de-sex the dogs and cats in its care, they are taken each week to a vet at Two Wells who does the de-sexing and vaccinations for a discount rate

May be a little bit far from your son but I have nothing but praise for Derek Welles at the Stirling Animal Hospital in the Adelaide Hills He and his staff are wonderful and very caring, compassionate people.

I have Kelpies and a Whippet and before the Whippet had a Greyhoundx and Kelpies They make a wonderful combination of dogs living together and I find the Kelpies much more trainable than the sighthounds but more independent. At night when Yogi Whippet wants to be in bed with me the Kelpies want to be outside sitting on the verandah, although my dogs all have their baskets in my bedroom the Kelpies are more on patrol at night.
