  1. So I want to get Shyla this Tuffie toy for her birthday in a few weeks - The BULL But want to see if anyone else has bought a toy from this range! Are they really tough as they say and strong? Cos for $45.00 I want it to be good!
  2. Thanks guys!!! Andisa - Pmed you Well today she's standing on the leg a lot more when standing still, she's only had half a anti inflammatory tablet this morning so not sure if that helped or not, but she definitely is improving. Done lots of research on non-surgical methods of healing if it's a cruciate and it seems lots people have healed even total ruptured cruciates with lots of rest and supplements and good diet and physio/hydrotherapy so that looked interesting too! Considering it's only a little tear if it even IS a tear at all I don't want to rush into major surgery! I guess my vets don't want to either by the looks of it. Rang a really good specialist guy who does lots of leg ops and he said if it's a strain it could take weeks to heal as well! Will see how we go
  3. Thanks again! The vet didn't seem that concerned about the leg weight when standing, maybe because she walks and moves fine on it, sits normal on it and scratches with it etc? She hasen't seemed to slip backwards in improvement yet she's only been getting better, so here's hoping! When we are at work we leave Shyla in a big lino room, we are going to try to find bits of carpet to put down. How do people leave their cruciate post-surgery dogs if they have to go to work during the week full time? Shyla is only alone 2 days a week. She pretty much sleeps the whole time. If I left her alone in a small crate I'm sure she would freak out and do more damage than if she was kept in her room as normal but on carpet bits... not sure though what I'd do I wouldn't want her having company 24/7 because being that she already hates being alone I'm sure not being alone for that long would trigger worse anxiety when we leave her
  4. Really!! Interesting, I wonder if anyone in Melb has recommendations of a good one?
  5. Thanks KL!! I hope it heals on its own too, it seems to be getting better and better, not worse, so there's hope. This vet does a TTO method which I am not that sure about but he said you just confine them indoors you don't need to do total crate restriction, just prevent running/jumping and frisbee and zoomies etc so the joint can heal. We havent played frisbee or gone on a walk in 2 weeks now! And we go outside on leash. When indoors she basically just sleeps anyway, the only sucky thing is when one of the cats runs past she will give chase! So trying to prevent that too. I'm glad the joint showed a lot less discomfort though and that he was able to do the drawer test and couldn't do it. We'll avoid running and long walks and frisbee still, just hang around inside the house, and see how we go. At least it's not a bad case.. I mean she doesn't even limp except for 3 or 4 paces after laying down, thats the only time you can see it a bit. And when standing she has a habit of holding weight off the leg, which is weird cos she's standing still, and she doesnt bear weight off it when walking and trotting.. so maybe it's become a habit to stand with more weight on the other leg when standing still?? Thanks for your info onthe Previcox, I feel a bit better using it now :D In terms of supplements we just received our first bottle of SynFlex in the mail from the U.S! It's this pharmaceutical grade glucosamine and other good jointy stuff liquid and they say to double the dose for the first 10 days to penetrate the joints faster, so we just started that last night, hopefully that helps too!
  6. FEB 13th: Well it's been two weeks, we just went and saw our usual favorite vet and he manipulated the leg and even though she was very tense (cos she gets scared at the clinic) he was able to perform the 'drawer test' on her leg and said the joint is stable, meaning there is no FULL rupture of the cruciate ligament. She whined a bit when he was probing her leg but he said he was manipulating it a lot so it wasn't very very tender. He said it doesn't mean the cruciate may not be partially torn though, and that sometimes the surgery is needed for that anyway :D So we are home with more anti inflammatories for 2 weeks (Previcox - anyone had that one before?) and he said to wait another 2 weeks with rest and see how she goes. He said just keep her indoors but not totally confined, just not playing with other dogs with chasing and frisbee and other running activities. So another 2 weeks here we come! We are at the stage now where she walks, runs and zoomies fine on the leg (zoomies when she decides to randomly and I have to stop her) so the leg gets used fine, but when standing still she has a habit of holding a bit of weight off it, and when getting up from laying on it she limps for 3 or 4 steps. Otherwise you wouldn't know she has a sore leg!
  7. Oh my gosh one should not watch a tribute after putting fresh makeup on   That was a lovely tribute and I hope the pain eases for you ;)
  8. 6/52 - Watching and waiting QUESTION! we are up to week 6 aren't we?? There doesn't seem to be any other week sixers in our Flickr group so I have held off putting the pic up til now
  9. I buy mine off Ebay from here http://stores.shop.ebay.com.au/Dog-Food-2-U__W0QQ_armrsZ1 they are all natural chews that are naturally sun dried and not full of preservatives or 'smoked' to make them taste extra good. I give Shyla one of their chews as I leave her alone so she's busy
  10. I'm new to the raw thing too! I like the idea of having at least 4 different protein sources a week, so IMO yes more meat sources also. I aim for Shyla having some offal, egg, lamb bones, chicken frames and other meaty offcuts so that she gets a mixture. I give her brisket bones too are they lamb? I am still learning lol
  11. Shyla had kennel cough within 2 weeks of me bringing her home, and also about a month and a half ago. This time I just let her be at home and gave her doggy cough mixture and there was no need for antibiotics (good, cos I don't like using them unless I realllly have to)
  12. They are beautiful!!!! I looove Belgiums!
  13. Very strange! I hope he settles soon, I know it's distressing to see them be anxious and you can't figure out why!!
  14. So you'd be happy to see 4 month old pups kept inside alone for 8+ hours a day, 5 days a week? Sorry but I fail to see how an active pup is expected to achieve any form of toilet training or any sort of decent muscle development in such a situation. They'd have to be crated or penned in separate rooms. A pretty sad future for an active little working terrier IMO. I'm no great fan of debarking but I think that would be kinder than life in a crate. This all seems to be going over the top & ridiculous. The post is about 2 puppies age 4 months old, that is still a baby age. They have a normal thing of barking over a toy or to play & a cranky neighbour complaining. We now have All this breed bark. They are not stimulated/exercised enough. They need a behavourist. They will always bark like this if its not stopped now. Its better to debark them than to follow the suggestion to seperate them for a day or a few hours a day to break the habit. They are a breed that is trouble & dumped in the pound a lot. Having 2 pups the same age is trouble. Overkill I reckon. Bit scary reading all this. The habit needs stopping so seperation, done kindly or teaching the command Quiet by distraction, spray bottle or whatever works to make them understand Shut Up is done by many owners of 2 pups or more. Have had to do it myself. No one said every individual in the breed barks. I said they tend to be barky. Others disagree. 30-40 minutes a day isn't enough exercise? It's way too much IMO. These are babies. How can you guarantee that a few days of separation will cure barking. It's definitely worth trying but the OP has said it can't be done outside. How do you teach pups to be quiet when you're not home Christina? The pups aren't noisy when the OP is home. Agree with it all! And when I think of JRT's the first thing I think of is barking too, cos a) I have lived near some in the past with proof and b) well if you google the breed most info on them say they are as well If my dogs were a noise issue outside though and I couldn't fix the problem I would have the dog inside out of respect for the neighbors and they are safer in a secure room/area anyway, and if the dog/s are exercised very well prior to leaving for work I think most dogs sleep most of the day anyway. A walk before and after leaving dogs indoors when at work is fine, even my young shepherd is fine with this routine and sleeps the day away and gets a walk before and after to stimulate mind and body. AND if the dogs had to be indoors you can get dog walkers or minders to come play with them and break up their day. There are options to make situations better
  15. Arh I'm a mess now :p What a lovely lovely tribute, RIP Rocco
  16. We had to apply for a permit to have 'more than 2 cats' and we pay a yearly fee for this. We also had to get it signed by all neighboring houses saying they didn't mind us having 3 INDOOR ONLY cats
  17. Let us know your findings when the cameras go up!
  18. I would not attend and put in writing why not. If not my dog doing a one in a million run off, then I dont want to see someones dog skittled by a car. And dogs DO run off at trials. Putting up at least temporary fencing is LAZYNESS, why no one sees it as a problem is beyond me. AGREE!! How hard can it be?? You get that orange stuff in a roll, you know the soft temp fencing. Better then nothing at all isnt it? If a dog goes for a bolt the fact there is something reasonably solid (to them) can prevent them being hit by a car. I don't think lack of funds is an excuse for lack of safety at all. Agree. IMO if your dog will take off after a motorbike or a hare then it doesn't have great recall
  19. I just ordered Synflex from America http://www.synflexforpets.com/
  20. I think this thread is a great warning for others now and it may save a dog or two from potential accident offleash!! As owners though we take responsiblity for our own dogs and some take more risks than others. Personally I don't let shyla offleash in unfenced areas cos the potential for something bad happening 'is there' and I love her so god damned much I simply cannot take that risk. I have a few times in the past, I can count maybe 3 or 4 times on one hand, but every one of those times I was stressed and worried. they definitely should make more enclosed dog barks around the place
