Salivation & Unsteady On Back Legs
k9angel replied to k9angel's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Bloods were taken yesterday and results are back this morning. Whitey has Thombocytopenia. Which means he has hardly any platelets and bleeds very easily. He only has to knock himself to cause a bleed. Dogs should have 200-500 platelets, Whitey only has 8. Whitey is alot better this morning and should be able to come home this afternoon. He will be treated with cortisone. Thankyou everyone for your kind words, advice and thoughts. It is much appreciated. -

I know Pers. That's what the vet said, he hadn't seen it for years. I was only watching one of those animal police shows the other night on foxtel and they had a case of distemper. Very sad. I remember thinking Thank Dog for vaccines. It's a worry when they are sick. Whitey suffers allergies. He always has. When he starts to show symptoms I have to put ointment in his eyes and give him 1 claratyne a day until it starts to clear, which is usually a few days. He doesn't have it atm but when he gets it, he loses all pigmentation in his nose and it goes pink and crusty. His eyes weep (he has damage to them due to this - he is not blind but does not see aswell as the other dogs - he has a cloudy layer that covers his pupil). When I mentioned this to the vet he said it sounded more like distemper, however Whitey has had this on and off all his life and was diagnosed with allergies at my other vet??? Ross said if it was distemper it would of only taken 5-6 mths for his eyes to get like that, but theyve been that way since he was a year or so old so it doesn't add up. -

It's not looking good. I just rang the vet and he says he is showing more and more signs of distemper. ;) He is doing full bloods now and should have most of the results back tommorow. However this will NOT diagnose distemper - thats a whole other test. I will go and see Whitey this afternoon. Ross is baffled. Ive been trying to keep busy all day to keep my mind off it, but I have butterflies and a bad gut feeling. What if he dies overnight? I am so scared.... I have searched the yard high and low for anything that he may of chewed to make him sick. There is nothing. There WAS a small treated pine log that looked to of been chewed but the vet says that is highly unlikely to be the cause. I can't beieve this is happening. Althought there is several other dogs in the yard, it still feels empty. Blacky (his sister) has been doing a deathly howl all day on and off. That frightens me because when I lost my husky boy Claude in 2007, his sister Jay Jay did the same thing. They know when something is wrong. -

No. He is only 6. -
One of my resident dogs is at the Vets this morning. ;) I went out to tend to them this morning and found him laying in his kennel head out. There was a small puddle of saliva and he was turning looking at his back end as though in pain or like it wouldn't work for him. I had to practically drag him from the kennel (gently) and was saddened to see something was terribly wrong. He was extremely unsteady on his back legs, like he was drunk and they were giving out on him. All I could think of was a tick but I didn't think we had them around here. I bought him inside and observed him while I got the kids ready to go to the vet. All the while Whitey sat on the floor and watched. Every now and then he would let out a gentle howl or little cry. I rushed him down to the vet. The vet agreed the symptoms resembled that of a tick and one of the first things the vet asked was "Where has he been lately?" I told him no where, just local. I asked if ticks were around here and he said no. He observed him, took his temp, (normal) checked his eyes etc etc while I chased the 2 kids around the surgery. He then gave have him a shot of steroids and put him in a cage to stay the day for further observation. Before we left, he said to me the symptoms were also very similar to distemper but that he had not seen that for years. (Whitey is up to date with shots too??) I have to call tonight for an update. (I will go there so I can see Whitey) I only bought Whitey inside last night and he was fine. Running around playing with the kids and Luki. He fetched the teddy and was his normal self. He ate his dinner ok and was fine when I put him out for bed. I am really worried for him. Has anyone seen this before and what did it turn out to be??

My Dog Is Under My Neighbour's House......
k9angel replied to charliehotel's topic in General Dog Discussion
So overall how does she get along with your older boy Donnie? As Donnie is getting older & doesnt want to play/interact with her as much, he might be somehow warning her to stay clear??? If youre not out there all the time youre not likely to see everything that's going on. He is getting on and slowing down and she IS in her prime. He may see her as a threat and she may fear him for some reason??? A dog only has to look at another dog a certain way to scare them off. Yesterday my old girl had poor Luki bailed up in the kitchen. We were eating dinner in the loungeroom and I observed them carefully. Luki would not make eye contact and when he did Gypz would give him the eye (no growls or lip lifting) and he would turn around. No matter how much I called him he would not come. She would not hurt him but she is letting him know she is above him in the doggy pack rankings. Next time youre out with them together and she is off the chain, observe their every move. Watch their body language and for any signs or eye contact from Donnie that may trigger her to run under the house. -
I feel the same. If I saw my neighbour doing that I wouldn't just sit there filming it. I wouldn't be able to restrain myself either. I'd be jumping that fence or knocking that door down quick smart to get to the dog and if she got in the way, Dog help her.
-
How the hell can anyone be so cruel?? :D That is just disgusting. I wonder if it was his dog even? Poor little dog. R.I.P. ;) As for that other woman beating that little dog, I too would love 5 mins with her. She want to thank her lucky stars she isn't my neighbour - because if I saw someone doing that.... I hope the authorities step in and take that dog before it too ends up being beaten against a wall or beaten to death. There are some real sicko's out there, or I should say oxygen thieves.

I'd say redback too. Or a close relation to it. *sends shivers up my spine*

Although I didn't get to meet Nelson in person from what I heard and read of him, he was a very sweet boy. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=202731 Nelson was only 8 months old and like many others, was unlucky in life. He never really stood a chance. From what we know he would of had 2 to 3 homes at least, possibly more - in his short 8 mths on this earth and 2 pound stays, the last resulting in his death this morning. R.I.P. boy. Nelson found himself at the pound only recently and was adopted by a family who said they had low fences but were going to extend them higher. Sadly for Nelson they did not do this and so Nelson must of been getting out. Due to this, no fault of his own, he was returned back to Hawkesbury pound, as a surrender. It is tragic and a waste of life. A gorgeous young dog, not living to see his first Birthday or Christmas, not getting the chance to run, chase a ball and play, to lay in the sun or watch the birds fly by, not getting a chance to be loved and to give love. He was a baby, with so much to offer. He was quiet skinny when he arrived at the pound, so he not only suffered abandonment, he also suffered neglect at some stage. Life is so unfair. My condolences go out to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Hawkesbury pound because I know they at least, would of shown this boy the love and care he deserved in his final days and right up until the end. Sadly though, Nelsons story does not end here. There are Nelsons in pounds across the state and beyond dying needlessly everyday. Please spare a thought for the forgotten ones, the poundies who through no fault of their own - pay with their lives. I do not know what I did wrong, Why I ended up in this mess, I guess I was not good enough, or as pretty as the rest. This morning when I fell asleep, for a moment things went dark, But then when I finally awoke, I was in a big doggy park. The grass was green, the sky was blue, Not a cloud was in the sky, I felt happy and free as I ran along, Not a single teardrop in my eye. There was food and toys and treats to eat, A river of sparkling blue to swim, Trees and bones, warm golden sun, Was this doggy heaven I was in?. I knew that I was home at last, I felt wanted and I felt loved, I watched as others crossed the bridge, The Rainbow sparkled from above. Everyone was so kind to me, They all wanted to be my friend, One minute I was on Death Row dying, And the next I was here, at the Rainbows end. I hope life is better for you now boy. Run free - forever XXX

That was a beautiful tribute. I didn't know Paddy but I am R.I.P. gorgeous boy. I am sure one day you will be reunited with your friend, in another time, another place. Until then cherish all the memories you had together here on this earth. Take care X My thoughts are with you.

What a gorgeous tribute. My thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time. R.I.P. Nik

I believe she was sending you a message. That would of been the best Birthday gift ever, to run free like that with your girl and in such a beautiful place. I only wish I listened to my dreams more. I moved from Orange back to Sydney in about 2004. I only had the 4 huskies at the time but they were my babies. My fur kids. When I moved into this house I started to have recurring dreams that I had lost 2 of my dogs. I dreamed it almost every night and it was more of a nightmare than a dream. I became paranoid, checking fences twice a day - checking their collars. I was convinced two were going to escape, somehow. The dreams continued on and off for the next few years. I would dream it at least 2-3 times a week, sometimes more. It really frightemed me. I felt lost in these dreams. My babies were gone and I was struggling to cope with the loss. I searched everywhere - from City streets to schools, and in many of the dreams - it was country scenery. I walked dog knows how many miles, climbed that many mountains, walked that many fields in these dreams but never found them and no one ever saw them. I cannot even begin to explain how I felt. My dogs were my life (still are) and it was like a part of my heart was gone and I needed it back, to feel normal, happy & complete again. I was glad to awake from these dreams to find my babies safe and well in the yard, but still I knew they meant something just couldn't figure out - what it was. In 2007, I was still having these dreams. They had become a normal part of life for me now. I still couldn't work them out. Until.... Sunday afternoon. It was 1.7.07. I lost my boy Claude suddenly. It was a very traumatic time. One I will never ever forget. He was only 6 years old. For the next year the dreams continued as I struggled to cope with my real life loss. It was the exact feeling I had felt in my dreams - except - I couldn't wake up from it this time - it was real. I lived it during the day when I was awake AND at night in my dreams. I was extra careful & cautious after this as in my dreams I had lost two of them, not one. Any sign of sickness I would be straight to the vet. In September 2008, Cassie became unwell. Drinking lots, very bloated tummy and pale gums. I remember they couldn't find a vein to draw blood, she had become that anaemic and was getting worse by the minute. They did a pcv?? on her and found her belly to be full of blood. The vet suspected a tumor on the spleen but when they opened her up, she was full of tumors and slowly bleeding to death. They rushed her into surgery. I will never forget that phone call. I begged for them to do something to save her. I was a mess. Screaming and crying repeating "no no no" into the phone. I then asked for her to be stitched up and sent home to die with us. They told me she would bleed to death within 24 hrs and that the kindest thing to do would be to have her euthanized on the op table. I had no choice. I had to think of her - not me.... She died on 11.9.08 aged 7 yrs. I told her I loved her when I dropped her off and that I would be back soon to pick her up. I didnt in a million years expect to bring her home in an urn. Those dreams were not telling me that they were going to escape - they were telling me they were going to be gone - forever. After Cassie died - the dreams stopped. I have dreamed of them afterwards. Not very often but when I do the dreams are so real and like yours, so beautiful. They run and play together just like they did as babies. These two, brother and sister were inseperable when alive - and I believe in death now also. I actually only dreamed of Claude the other night. He was standing there looking as graceful and beautiful as ever just staring at me. He was a short distance away - like he was out of reach (which he is) - but he looked beautiful and happy. When I awoke it hit home again that he was gone. Three years on and I still miss my babies. They will stay with me forever, just like your girl will with you. Once theyre in youre heart - they are there forever. ;)

All my older dogs do it with the youngens. They dont hurt them. I seriously dont think you have anything to worry about. My Old girl Gyps is the funniest, she displays her fangs (I used to call her the funnel web), will let out a growl and the younger dog knows instinctively not to bother her. (and she'd never hurt a fly) We have Luki here and he is going on 8 mths and going through the stage of just wanting to play, play and play she lets him know when she has had enough as do all the others, Jasmine, Jay Jay, Blacky - they pretty much well all do it. It's just their way of teaching him to behave I guess. So although you might think it looked/sounded bad, what your girl was most likely doing was telling this little dog she'd had enough of the silly bugger games. ETA: I have several dogs here, 11 atm - ranging in ages from 12 wks to 11 years and see this kind of behavior on a daily basis. There are never any fights and no one ever gets hurt -
-
To be honest I didn't even notice it.
-
He's nearly 8 mths old and yes he is getting bigger and bigger. He is taller than my resident huskies now. Poor Jasmine (who is border x collie kelpie) looks like a midget next to him now. She towered over him before.
-
No not a devil. More like an alien with all these craters he has been digging of late. My backyard resembles the moon in some parts.
-
When I was taking some pics yesterday I got one of Luki which is really weird. Well to me it is as I have never seen a dogs eyes reflect yellow in a photo before. I have seen red, green and blue but never yellow. ??? I knew he was special and I have heard of the sun shining out of ones ar@e before, but never their eye

Wishing you & your boy all the best.
