A 16-year-old dog had maggots in an ulcerated wound on its face and maggots in its mouth when found at an Adelaide home, a court has heard. The dog's owners, Debra Susan Welsby, 54 and Mark Morris Welsby, 55, on Tuesday pleaded guilty to ill treating an animal after the RSPCA was called by other people concerned over the health of the poodle. The RSPCA found the dog to have a large and deeply ulcerated wound on its muzzle that had become infested with maggots. A veterinary examination found the maggots had eaten through both the skin and muscle, and could be found inside the poodle's mouth. Because of the seriousness of its condition the animal was euthanased. Counsel for the RSPCA Jed Goodfellow told the Adelaide Magistrates Court the dog's coat was also soaked in urine and it was severely dehydrated. Magistrate Alf Grasso said it defied understanding that the couple had not taken the dog to a vet ahead of an appointment made for the day the RSPCA officers intervened. But he accepted that the offending was out of character and, without recording a conviction, fined them $1500 each. He also banned the pair from obtaining another pet for three years. http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/break...s-in-its-mouth/ A measly $1500 fine for such cruelty and NO conviction. WTF?? They should be banned for LIFE - not just 3 years.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/newsh...down-teenagers/ Police dog Argus put the bite on three teenage burglars overnight, stopping them in their tracks on the fairway of a Melbourne golf course. Police were called to the Monterey Secondary College around 2am (AEDT) after the teenagers allegedly broke into a canteen for an early-morning snack. Local police and a canine unit arrived within minutes and chased the offenders across the school oval and onto a nearby golf course. After repeated requests to stop by his handler, Senior Constable Paul Newman, Argus was released and quickly chased down one of the fleeing trio. A second offender immediately stopped after witnessing Argus's effective capture techniques. The third hid in bushes and was found a short time later. None of the offenders was injured. All three males were taken to Frankston Police Station and interviewed in relation to the burglary. A 14-year-old male from Cranbourne and a 15 and 16-year-old male, both from Frankston, are expected to be charged by summons at a later date. Sorry but I would of paid to of seen that. Hopefully it will teach them a lesson.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/break...lly-euthanised/ She's been through warzones, shot at by the taliban and defied death so many times she was named "Target" by US soldiers. She once even heroically sniffed out a suicide bomber at a military base, scaring and biting him while he wore 11 kilograms of explosives. But there was one death she couldn't dodge, The Daily Mail reports. A clerical error at a New Jersey dog pound saw the death-defying German Shephard get euthanised by mistake. "When it comes to euthanizing an animal, there are some clear-cut procedures to follow," said Ruth Stalter, director of the Animal Care And Control centre. "Based on my preliminary investigation, our employee did not follow those procedures." Target became the friend soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, who took them in and treated her as a pet, along with two other dogs, Sasha and Rufus. "I just can't believe that something like this would happen to such a good dog," said Sgt Terry Young, the owner of the shephard. Target and the other two dogs became heroes after scaring a suicide bomber that was trying to sneak into a military base in Afghanistan. The three dogs barked, bit and scared the attacker while simultaneously waking soldiers nearby. The bomber was forced to detonate his explosives outside the base, potentially saving 50 lives. Sasha was killed in the blast that injured five soldiers, and the wounded Target and Rufus were treated by medics as if they were injured soldiers. Target was treated like royalty by military personel, and was allowed to return to Phonenix, Texas to live with Sgt Young and his family. The dog continued to enjoy fame, appearing on "Oprah" in a show about amazing animals. Last Friday, Target escaped from the family backyard. Sgt Young put out the call to find the missing dog, putting out missing dog notices and contacting TV stations to help him find the wantaway dog. Sgt Young managed to find Target's picture on the website used by Pinal County's dog catchers to return missing pets to their owners. He thought the shelter was closed on the weekend, only to turn up on Monday and find that Target had been euthanised by mistake. Sgt Young said his four-year-old son couldn't understand the loss. "My four-year-old son just can't understand what is going on with Target and keeps asking me to get the poison out of her and bring her home. They don't want her to go be with God yet," a teary Sgt Young told the local CBS TV station. Target's cremated ashes will be returned to the family. So very sad . R.I.P. girl

How sad for your friend and her dogs. I couldn't agree more hollee - too many get them (huskies) as a material item - as something to show off. They haven't a clue about the actual breed. -

Help New Puppy, Dont Know What Im Doing, Advice Needed
k9angel replied to angelnkids's topic in Puppy Chat
Hi Tracey, Firstly I want to say, "Yes" it IS best for him to be desexed. Good on for asking for help and please don't be offended but I am dissapointed you didn't think of all these things prior to purchasing your puppy. If you have to shop at coles for his food, get fresh chicken as mentioned by an earlier poster. Once you get into the swing of things, it is not hard having two babies and a dog. I know were all different but if I can manage with 10+ dogs and two toddlers I am sure you'll be able to manage one small dog?? Have you done any research on the breed(s) your puppy is suppose to be since bringing him home? Little dogs, especially chis and poms can and do become very attached to their humans, to the point of being protective - I grew up with chi's and have one in care atm - it is very important to keep them socialized. The Chihuahua is lively, alert, proud, and makes a good companion. They seek and demand affection, and they are very spunky by nature. They are determined, courageous, and they become very attached to their owner(s). They have a jealous streak, and they will follow their owner’s every move if strangers are present. Some Chihuahuas are difficult to train, but they are intelligent and generally learn quickly. They are most receptive to gentle training and positive reinforcement. The Chihuahua doesn’t like to be poked, pestered, or teased, and he may snap if a child provokes him. Because of their small size, they will resort to using their teeth if they feel threatened. This breed can be noisy and difficult to housebreak. All Chihuahuas should be properly socialized to avoid the onset of aggressive behavior. This breed is usually aggressive towards other dogs. Puppy pre-school is a great idea and will help keep him socialized with both other people and other dogs. I'd be getting those fences fixed asap to get him into a toileting routine. And also to get him outside for a good run/play on the grass. You can get puppy training pads, I have never used them so don't know what theyre like though. ?? I use news paper for inside training. And yes crate him to give him some him time away from the kids and so he can sleep in peace. Crates are the best thing since sliced bread - I'd be lost without mine (for my smaller rescues). If he cries and carries on when you first put him in, ignore him. Sometimes it takes a while for them to adjust. You may end up with ringing ears short term but in the long term, you'll be thankful and so will he, knowing he has his own little safe haven. Oh and your comment "probably not the best time to get a pup with 2 children" I think it is the best time to get a pup!! - your kids will grow up with him and vice versa. I believe every kid should have a dog (though I know it's not possible for all). Children and dogs form strong friendships and close bonds. There is nothing more precious than seeing your littlies talk to, laugh at, and play with their doggy buddies, and the dogs love it just as much, they'll play more to make them laugh more or listen intently with ears pricked. It is very special. In the long run it also teaches the kids responsiblity, to love, and to respect mans best friend. All the best Rach -
http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/latest...n-by-alligator/ A young Florida boy watched his pet turtle being eaten alive by an alligator, after he donated it to a local aquarium, the Pensacola News Journal reported. In a distressing moment, Brenda Guthrie and her eight-year-old son Colton heard crunch noises from the turtle’s shell as it was devoured by the hungry reptile. “Oh no alligator, let it go,” a hysterical Colton shouted at the alligator, begging it to release his turtle, but to no avail. In front of their eyes, the red-eared slider turtle disappeared into the alligator’s jaws, with a horrified Colton jumping up and down screaming. Brenda said the family donated their beloved pet, named Tomalina, to the Gulfarium in Florida when it outgrew their home aquarium. The park was picked as a new home for Tomalina so that Colton could visit his pet whenever he liked. Water park officials advised the alligator, Gracie, had just been hand fed and it is not common for them to be interested in turtles. “It’s horrible for a little kid to have to see that,” General Manager Don Abrams reportedly told the Pensacola News Journal. “That’s not unusual to put sliders in the same exhibit. (The alligators) have never eaten a turtle in the exhibit before."

So sorry to hear Hannah - I love your tribute, especially the way you described him killing his dinner. He sure sounded like a character. Remember all the good times - I am sure he had a great 4 years with you and would of crossed the bridge a much happier dog as opposed to being pts at the pound. Good on you for opening your heart and home and showing him love until the very end. R.I.P. boy
