Awesome...I nearly peed myself when the guy ran off and the dog latched on to his arm. Same. What a clever little dog.

Unfortunately this isn't how it works anymore. I believe many years ago, it wasn't uncommon for Vet clinics to have their own furnace but it's not that common anymore, though perhaps some of the larger facilities or shelters still might? I'm not sure it's legal to dump the bodies in the general waste area of the tip? I am sure there are Environmental and Protections Agency regulations regarding this? Hi Stormie, When I said they can be done publicly or privately, I didn't mean cremated at the veterinary surgery. I meant the one's that are done privately are picked up through pets at peace (or whichever company is doing it) and taken off somewhere to be cremated. I lost my my Claude in 07. He was the first I had cremated. I am not sure where they are done when they are done publicly. I have never heard of them dumping the bodies in the general waste area of the tip?? I imagine it would be illegal for the reasons you mentioned, not to mention disrespectful. The RSPCA used to (20 yrs back) bury the ashes from the furnace in holes, which were dug on site at the Yagoona branch. I am not even sure if they still have those furnaces, but I imagine so.
-
From my understanding (here in NSW) when a pet dies and you ask the vet to take care of it, the pet is sent off to be cremated. I remember being asked (when my first died back in 07) whether I wanted the dog to be cremated publicly or privately. Privately is when they are sent off to pets at peace (or the like) to be cremated and sent back to you, wheras publicly, they go to be cremated with a heap of other pets and you don't get their ashes back. I have had all 5 of mine done privately through pets at peace. At the RSPCA, Yagoona, they used to cremate them in the furnace, then bury their ashes in huge holes, like landfill. Not sure how it works there now though, this was nearly 20 yrs ago I am talking.

How is Isa doing Montage? how is the cough? any better? I hope you're both holding up ok. I also think you are doing the right thing by not putting her through surgery/chemo at this age. I know it's easier said than done but please try and stay strong for Isa. They pick up on our moods/feelings so easily. Take care. Rach.

So what are you saying Matthew? That labs, beagles etc can't bite people? That only certain types of dogs have the potential to be aggressive? If a lab or beagle bit someone, what would your reaction be? OMG! How many times do I have to say it? Yes, any dog can bite - I've said this numerous times. That isn't the point. The point is that pitbulls have been bred as fighting dogs. That makes them an inherently dangerous breed to have around. Labradors, Beagles, Golden Retrievers aren't now, nor have they ever been bred as fighting dogs. They are renowned as 'family' dogs. Honestly, I feel like I am talking to a brick wall sometimes... Matthew did you even read that post I put on re. fatal dog attacks? Did you see that 2 of the dogs listed on that list, were lab x's? I think you are seeing and believing what you want to based on that one 'bad' experience you had and from what you hear & see on media reports. Should we be banning labs too? and rotti's and sheps and sibes and mals and kelpies and wire hair fox terriers, just to name a few breeds that made mention on that list. And you say you feel like you're talking to a brick wall. I feel dizzy from going around and around the same circle. If by now you don't get it, I doubt you ever will.

Take a look at this MatthewB. It was posted by Kylielou in one of the BSL threads. I found it by accident but found it very interesting. I think it proves any dog is capable of biting, and killing - regardless of size or breed. No Matthew, the point is that pitbulls have been banned and eradicated in various jurisdictions over the last 20 years or more. As best as we can determine, not a single bite has been prevented using this strategy. What do you say to that? The breed needs to be eradicated until it ceases to exist. Simple. It can't attack/kill you if it's extinct. Then what do we do with every other breed or cross that attacks someone ? Continue to blame the breed or cross untill there are none left ? No - Labradors, Beagles, etc aren't bred as fighting dogs. Is that such a hard concept for the people in this forum to grasp? Is it so hard to accept that any dog is capable of biting, includ. labs and beagles? Is it so hard to accept that many of these dogs are ending up in the wrong hands, AKA irresponsible owners? I think you need to seek professional help to help you cope with what you have been through. It has obviously left you emotionally scarred and traumatised.

I was going to ask earlier on whether you'd had a bad experience with one as you really seem to have a grudge against them big time. I guess the above post answers that question. The owner of the dog was obviously a bogan - to be laughing at you as his dog bailed you up like that. This is what we are trying to say. In most cases it is the hands they end up in. The bogans, the wanna-be macho's. It's really sad that you had to experience that and I imagine it would of been very scary. But think, if that twit of an owner had of kept that dog at home, like a responsible owner would - and not let him out to roam to the park - you wouldn't of been bailed up to begin with. And if the dog had of been socialised properly, chances are he would of came running at you with a wagging tail - not snarling teeth. Also whose to say the dogs owner hadn't abused it before? let's face it - he sounds like an absolute bogan who obviously didn't care for the wellbeing and safety of a fellow human being, laughing like that - and he couldn't of cared too much about his dog, letting him out to roam. Maybe the dog felt threatened in some way, seeing you there with a cricket bat??? I was in the nets of the cricket field across the road from the "bogans" house, with the nets being atleast 150m from even the road. I fail to see how the dog could have felt threatened nearly 200m from its "territory" - AFTER wandering over to us. We'd been there for nearly 2 hours before the dog came out of its yard. Oh ok. I didn't know that when I read your first post. And I didn't mean felt threatened in regards to it's territory, I meant it might of felt threatened for it's life, seeing you with a bat. I understand you've had a bad experience but I don't feel you are being fair by branding them all the same and putting them all into the same boat. IF that guy had of had that dog properly contained that day, whether in the backyard, the house or a leash - do you think you'd be here now telling us about this? No, because it wouldn't of happened. Is your hate for this breed based soley on that one incident? I take it, it is. Several months ago, I was driving home from the shops when I eyed a staffy x girl sitting on the nature strip. It was a hot day, a stinker and she looked exhausted as she panted away under the tree. Me being the do-gooder I am, stopped the car and went to see if she was ok. I wasn't sure whether she'd been hit by a car, was lost or was waiting for her master at the shops opposite. I went into all the shops and asked. Nope. No one had seen her before so I asked one shopkeeper for a bowl of water. They filled an empty icecream container and I went to take it to her. As I crossed the street, she watched me carefully. I kind of felt uneasy then, (just the stare she was giving and the still tail) and should of backed away but continued. I was in the middle of the street waiting for a car to pass when I noted her body language change. Her ears went back, her tail tucked under her body as she jumped to her feet. I thought 'oh oh', I am going to get bitten here. I tried to talk to her gently but it was clear she was not friendly. She lifted her lips and charged at me. I almost fell over backwards, the water went all over me and what was left sprayed all over her deterring her and making her run off. I also came close to getting hit by a car. I got into my car and tried to follow her, but she was too fast and dissapeared. I assumed, and hoped - she had gone home. I came home and called the council but there wasn't much they could do as she was no where to be found. It was scary stuff I know that much. But, having said that I would do it all over again tommorow if I saw a staffy x sitting alone by the side of the road, because I know they are NOT all the same.

Jake - Little Kelpie Boy
k9angel replied to garnali's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Garnali I have just caught up with this thread. I just want to say for doing what you are doing for this little one. What a roller coaster ride it's been for you both. Reading through this thread bought me to tears. I was so afraid as I read through each post... What a little fighter he is. I hope with all my heart he continues to get better. He is the sweetest looking pup, you can see there is something 'special' about him, that's for sure. He is gorgeous. Great work and like I said, crossing everything here that he continues to win this fight. -
Happy Birthday Atlas Oh and some dancing girls for the Birthday boy

I thought as much. Re. the husky - probably left alone in a backyard. Some people make me so

I agree. 5ft fencing is not good enough, esp for a husky. Glad your daughter's dog is ok Rozzie, poor little bugger - I imagine it gave her a good fright.

Vets warn about banning Dangerous dogs. http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/national/10075916/vets-warn-against-banning-dangerous-dogs/ Veterinarians say banning breeds of dangerous dogs would not stop attacks, despite a Victorian government vow to crack down on vicious pets. Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu said on Friday the government wanted to "be rid of these dogs as soon as possible" following the death of a four-year-old girl who was mauled by an unregistered American pit bull mastiff cross in Melbourne on Wednesday. The owner of the dog could face charges under the Domestic Animals Act and fines in excess of $19,000. The government has also foreshadowed measures that could include the owners of dangerous dogs facing 20 years' jail in a similar law that applies to culpable drivers. The amnesty for registering dangerous dogs will end, meaning councils can seize and destroy the animals, while a "dob in a dangerous dog" anonymous hotline will also be set up. But Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) spokeswoman Kersti Seksel says socialisation of dangerous dogs rather than banning them would be more effective. Over-regulation for dog owners has not improved the situation so far, Dr Seksel said. "It's understandable that people are now calling for the banning of some breeds, however all the good evidence available shows that this doesn't work," she said in a statement on Friday. "Unfortunately, we believe the banning and over-regulation of dogs in our communities could be part of the problem as this leads to poor socialisation and increased risk of attacks." The AVA is instead calling for the government to increase funding for education and socialisation programs for dogs, their owners and young children. Its statistics show that the most likely victims of dog attacks are children aged under 10, usually by their own dogs at their homes. "We're never going to be able to prevent every incident, but a really good way to help prevent bites and attack is through socialisation of puppies with people and other dogs at a young age, and teaching our children how to be safe around animals," Dr Seksel said. Ayen Chol was killed when the dog escaped a neighbour's home and chased the four-year-old's cousin into her house in St Albans on Wednesday night. Ayen was watching television in the house when the dog attacked, lunging at her as she clung to her mother's legs.

TD, the fact the society fears something doesn't mean that fear has any basis in fact. I wish folk could see that their belief is being manipulated by politicians and the media for their own agendas and for the most part with no real reason for that fear. I get that people are worried about large powerful dogs and their potential to kill. I share that concern. I wish folk would read past the headlines and hysteria and actually educate themselves about what makes a killer dog. The research is out there, the books are out there and the fact that most people with real knowledge of dogs and dog aggression don't support BSL should be telling you that something's smelly about the BSL solution. Which part of "banning dogs breeds doesn't stop dog attacks" are people failing to grasp??? People like Mathew and others who dont have a fundamental understanding of dogs dont realise how easy it is to make a maneater. They can remove all pitbulls tomorrow and using dogs that are already here and legal you can breed another type of dog in a very short space of time. One that is more human aggressive ,larger and more dangerous. It is not that hard and not that hard to turn them nasty.Armed with that knowledge which end of the leash should you target? If a meth head can make a batch of meth under his kitchen sink with limited knowledge and basic ingredients it proves you dont need to be a chemist.Dog breeding is the same its not rocket science. Wow, sheer lunacy! If we believed you, every Police Dog Squad member and security guard dog unit would be suffering numerous injuries caused by their dogs. The fact that they don't is because the breeds selected are those which can be trained to restrain their aggressiveness and to attack only when commanded. The pitbull that killed the little girl that is the subject of this topic could not be stopped no matter what. I was under the impression the dog in question was a dog of mixed breeding. Matthew_B, you arn't per chance a HeraldSun journo, are you? I was thinking the same thing, re. journo.

Their upbringing can make a huge difference to the way they turn out. Some dogs are loved and included as part of the family, as they should be, while others are left to fend for themselves, or left chained up in a backyard with no socialisation, and no interaction. Some are spurred on to be aggressive, other's are mere trophies - to be paraded by Macho wanna be's who haven't a clue about dogs. I have mentioned this before on DOL, that my vet runs a doggy daycare where ppl drop off their dogs before they go to work and pick them up afterwards. Others are just dropped off 1-2 days a week for a play date. All of those dogs, bar ONE - are small fluffies. Can you guess what the other is? Yep you got it, a pit bull terrier. She is the most sweetest, softest natured dog. Watching her running around playing ever so gently with the littlies is adorable. And no, she is not a pup, she is a mature dog. Her owners took her to puppy pre-school and started her socialising young. My vet cannot speak highly enough of her. I have also owned a pitbull, saved from the fighting ring. Although Buster had been to hell and back, he was the sweetest boy and just wanted to be loved. He lived in harmony with my 4 huskies, dingo/greyhound blend and my horse, Angel. He not once, lifted a lip, growled or showed any signs of aggression. Oh and he had the best recall, you'd only have to whisper his name and he'd come running. And he was such a character, full of personality. He was a gem and everyone who met him, loved him. Have you ever met a pitbull Matthew B?, even seen one in real life? I am guessing you haven't and that you are just going by what you see on the news and read in the papers?
-
And the bullterrier. They copped a bad wrap too there for a while.

Sorry this is long... We have some young 'hero' types living just up the road. These guys have had several pitbulls over the past years and they seriously haven't a clue not only about pitbulls, but any dog in general. They just think it is cool and tough to be seen with one. At one stage they had a husky there. Some of you may remember me mentioning him in a thread in the rescue section. He'd seen that I had huskies and came down here trying to sell the dog to me. I felt so sorry for this dog. From memory he was about a yr or 2 old. He'd bought him from an ad in the trading post from memory and only had him a day or two. He was out to make a dollar I think. As he spoke to me on the front lawn, he held the dog lead in his hand with the husky boy on the other end. He was getting pulled left right and centre all over the yard by the dog. Seriously, the guy was twice the size of me and couldn't control a husky. I ended up taking the lead and holding the dog. I had no problem and just stood there holding the lead. He didn't have a clue and had no control, whatsoever over that dog. Then the idiots who live across from me. Another example. (startd a thread on that one too) they had an amstiff and a staffy. Those poor dogs were confined to a yard 24/7. They got out one night while the owner went fishing. By then there were 4 of them. He bred the amstaff male with the amstaff staffy. The only reason I knew was because I heard a pup screaming out one day and went to check what the commotion was. I stuck my head over the fence and saw Mum and Dad dog and 2 pups. One of the pups was stuck under a metal bathtub that was in the yard overgrown with weeds. I coaxed him out. The night they got out they were at my front gate going berserk to get to my dogs who were behind the 2nd gate. I gathered them up and took them back. When I knocked on the door, the wife answered. I told her that I had her dogs. She refused point blank to come near them telling me she hated them. I remember asking "Well how do you go outside to put your washing on the line?" her reply "I don't. I hang it inside". She said they were her husbands dogs and he was out fishing. I demanded she call him and get him to come home rightaway as I was not sitting there all night holding their dogs. A while passed and he finally shows up. He doesn't even turn the car off, leaves it running while he puts the dogs back behind the gate, NOT even checking how or where they'd gotten out. He then jumps back in his car and dissapears again. Ofcoarse they got out again. By now it was about 2 in the morning. It was so bad I called the police to come out. They didn't. The dogs were terrosing the neighbourhood. Trying to get into ppls backyards to get to their dogs, chasing cats. The amstaff was starving for human attention. When my neighbour opened her front door to see what all the noise was, the amstaff jumped up on her scratching the whole front of her belly. Not through aggression, but because he wanted attention and hadn't been taught manners. He didn't realise his strength. Same when I tried to put him back behind his gate. I have felt some strong dogs before but this dogs strength was incredible. Sadly that night, those 2 dogs went on to kill someone's dog a few blocks away. People in my street could hear the dog screams and the screams of an owner trying to save their dog. The adult dogs were picked up, impounded and pts. I advised pound staff where the dogs had come from, but nothing came of it. One pup went missing that night, and the other they still have. I often hear him barking. He never leaves the yard and they are never home. 3 dogs died that night and much heartache was caused, another dog went missing and another continues to live a lonely, isolated life - all because of some idiots stupidity and negligence, yet HE gets off scot-free. Sickening and so wrong IMO. Sorry to go a little OT but my point being, these are the kinds of hands dogs (regardless of breed)sometimes end up in. The wrong hands. I saw on the 11.30 news that the Police are considering laying charges against the dog's owner in last nights attack. He SHOULD be charged and held accountable IMO. A little girl has died, others have been injured. Not to mention the emotional scarring it will leave them with. What is the world coming to? He'll probably be let off with a slap on the wrist and a fine as per usual. Owners need to be held accountable and be more responsible for their pets actions. R.I.P. to the precious little girl lost last night and condolences to her family. So very sad. They'll be traumatised for some time to come, if not forever.
