  1. Firstly great post Andrea. I am only a small time rescuer but have taken on a few special needs cases. A couple that come to mind; Luki. A husky x pup. He was a very very sick little boy when he was about to be pts at the pound. He was actually not far off death when I picked him up. It was peeing down with rain and the pound called to tell me he was due, had no interest and was gravely ill and if I wasn't able to take him he was going to the vet to be pts. (he had missed that mornings pts on site). I couldn't find a babysitter so had to take the kids along too. As soon as I saw him I feared parvo. He was so lethargic, he barely moved. He was all bones too. We rushed him to the vet (me and the kids) where he was tested and it came back a strong positive reading. I knew when I took him on, that he was a very sick little boy and might not even make it. But he was a pup, his life had barely started. He deserved a chance. Now I am not rich by any standards (when it comes to $) but thankfully my vet allowed me to pay it off. If he hadn't of, I probably would of taken out a small loan or sold off something I owned to pay for it. Luki was given a 50/50 chance of making it and treatment commenced immediately. Thankfully he did make it. Two years on and Luki is a much loved member of our family. (foster failure). He is a healthy, happy boy living life to the fullest. If I had of walked away, he would not be here today. Husky Jasmine. She was rescued at the last minute with her Daughter Alaska and Alaska's brother Bailey. They'd come from a crap home. Both Jasmine and Alaska's ears were half chewed down due to fly bite. they were left in the yard and just had food thrown out to them. They didn't know much love and hadn't seen much of the outside world. I took the 3 of them on. Jasmine was close to 10 yrs old when she came on season. She was suppose to be desexed, well according to her paperwork she was. So I rushed her down to be desexed. The vet opened her up and said she should of been dead. She had cysts and tumours and pyometra. Some parts of the uterine wall were so thin it was falling apart as they operated. They rang while she was on the operating table and asked what I wanted to do. Continue or pts. They warned me it was going to cost alot of $ and there was no garentee she'd make it thru the surgery. I asked them to continue and to do their best for her. $1,000+ later she made it. I knew I would never recover those costs and it took a few months to pay off but it was well worth it. I will never forget the way she looked at me afterwards. As if to say thankyou. She was adopted by a lovely family and is doing fantastic to this day! She may of had a crap start to life, but she is certainly living a happy ending today. If I had of known what I was in for ($ wise) from day 1 with her, I still would of taken her in and given her a chance at a proper life. I actually got a lovely card from her family for Xmas just gone, with a gorgeous pic of her and the family's horses on the front. It also had a little note letting me know that she continues to be happy and well. I cried when I read it. Happy tears. :) Then there was Sasha, the sibe from Hawkesbury pound. A lovely, lovely girl. She had a growth on her private that had to be removed. I knew this prior to taking her on. She had no other options. Got her home, she went into surgery and it turned out the growth was quiet big on the inside and the surgery turned out to be a little more intrusive than first thought. But all was good, she made it, made a full recovery and went on to be adopted to a lovely family and is still happy and healthy to this day. :) Although I am extremely grateful for donations, I do not depend on them to rescue.
  2. OMG! that's just sad. Are they for real? So what do they charge for a dog on the main register? I also noticed that poor labs lower eyelids, and the fact they all appeared quiet podgy. Sounds more like a puppy farm to me, they sure pump out a few and it seems to be all about the $$$. And the no-refund policy on the deposit. I'd be steering well clear of them.
  3. I know. I cannot believe it. That the same hand who signed the photo is the same hand that wrote that song! it's incredible and I feel so honoured and lucky to have it. I have cleaned it up and put it in my glass cabinet with all my other special things. :)
  4. It is very sad. I have come across 3 deceased estates now (by accident, I don't seek them out , they seem to find me or OH as it was in todays case) and it saddens me to see things that were once someone's wordly possessions thrown out like rubbish. I am so glad OH went past when he did. Once the scrappers come along, they trash and smash everything. (they are like scavengers, sp?) I love the photo. It would of been so sad to see it go into the rubbish. Thankfully it has a good home now and will be cherished.
  5. I just have to share this! :) This morning OH found an old photo in a frame that was about to be thrown into a council clean up. He spotted the lady with the frame in her hand and stopped. They got talking. The guy that lived at the house has recently died. And they have to clear the house out as it is going on the market next week. Anyways OH brings it home and gives it to me. I love it because it has a dog in it and is Australian. At first I assumed the pic was of the man that died but I couldn't figure out why his family would be throwing it out. ?? As I was uploading pics to flickr, 'Slim Dusty' came to mind, so I did a google search on Gordon Parsons. (the name written on the front) and this is what I found. :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Parsons_(song-writer) I also later realised I know who Joe was. I put 2 and 2 together when OH mentioned they had to rehome Joes elderly cattle dog - the same one I was trying to help rehome several weeks ago, Buddy. What a small world it is. Here is a thread I started at the time. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/230916-14yo-deaf-cattle-dog-buddy-needs-a-new-home/ Here is the pic, dust and all. :) ETA I just found this on youtube. It's lovely.
  6. Great pic! it looks like she is flying. :)
  7. This one has 1928 on the back and also their names. Boy looking at a peacock. I am pretty sure this was taken from the front of the house these came home. I will go past tommorow and have a look but those brick houses look very familiar. (I could be wrong but curious now) On the corner there now there are big blocks of units.
  8. Gorgeous pics Marion. :) ETA and gorgeous doggies too.
  9. Lovely pics Kirislin. And same, I love the bunny one too. :) And on the back On the back
  10. You are probably right Pers. There is another pic there with 1928 on the back of it. They're lovely to look at aren't they? I could look at them for ages.

  14. The Queensland Government aims to wipe out puppy farms under proposed new registration requirements for dog breeders. Agriculture Minister Tim Mulherin says unscrupulous breeders who usually run large-scale operations in isolated areas will be squeezed out under a proposed two-tiered breeder registration system. "These notorious operations generally have very poor conditions - sometimes with hundreds of dogs - and fail to meet any of the dogs' behavioural, social and physiological needs," Mr Mulherin said in a statement. The registration system will be mandatory for intensive dog breeders with regular monitoring and voluntary registration for smaller scale breeders. As well, microchips will include the breeder's information and specific details about the mother of each litter. "This will allow authorities to more easily identify puppy farms and trace the origins of puppies," Mr Mulherin said. He said with registered breeders having to display their identification number at the point of sale and on ads, consumer demand to buy from those breeders will soon force puppy farm operators out of the market. The RSPCA's Mark Townend welcomed the plan. "The RSCPA strongly urges all interested parties to get involved in the consultation process and make a submission," Mr Townend said. The Canine Control Council said it has been working closely with the government for more than a year on ways to wipe out puppy farms. Mr Mulherin said the standards will be open for comment until March 5. Link *Warning contains upsetting pic* http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/latest/12678470/new-laws-target-qld-puppy-farms/
  15. I am not sure Kirislin. I'd say it has gone up a little. I know they have extended the flour mills. There is a lovely lady there named Marian Duncan. Oh my can she paint! she's an equine artist. http://www.maduncan.com/ I not only had the pleasure of meeting Marian and visiting her studio, but also went riding with her and got to ride one of her arab horses. She owns the old trotting track and was giving me free riding lessons! I could ride but lacked confidence. I will never forget when I was doing a lap of the trotting track, there was a stick on there that must of looked like a snake. The horse I was riding (one of hers) startled and almost hit the ground trying to get away. I was so proud because I managed to stay on.
  16. Here are the dog on the tucker box pics. I will post some more old one's later. :)
  17. Yes it was brylcreamed. Dad used to love that stuff. I'd forgotten all about it until you mentioned it. I Can still smell it.... Love everyone's pics. That pic of Lady Cynthia and Pagan is gorgeous. I have a few really old pics (from 50's and earlier) that I picked up at a deceased estate a few years back. I will post a few shortly. I am not sure who the ppl are or where most of them were taken, but I just like looking at them. There is a couple of the dog on the tucker box in Gundagai taken in 1952.
  18. Gypsy (R.I.P) back in her day. She was only a youngen then, lucky to be 2. Pictured with her daughter Cassie, also no longer with us. That's a big tree they're in. A storm coming. I had (still have) a fascination with taking pics of storms and rainbows. Gypsy and Claude My first horse, a mini named Mary legs. She was tiny and so sweet. Then I got my old mare Angel. I miss having a horse. This was taken the day I got her.
  19. Love this thread. brings back memories. :) Here is one of my fav. old pics back when I was a kid. Dad took it using his canon slr camera. I am in the red dress sitting next to my brothers and a friend. I used to set up jumps for the dogs and get the neighbours kids to come along with their dogs and have competitions and pet shows. (the dogs pictured were ours, Bobby the poodle and Chang the pekinese). These were taken when I lived in Manildra. On a canon 35mm camera. (not slr) the pics are clearer/nicer in real life. These 2 taken at the cemetry. I used to love going up there and taking pics. The old piggery, now abandoned. The canola fields. Piggery creek. A few more to come. :)
  20. Gorgeous tags. Thanks for sharing Littlebear.
  21. Sorry I am not familiar with VIC laws regarding this. But that poor little puppy. R.I.P
