Ohhh newbies AND locals I am going to hillsborough training Nicky was awesome. Let me know how you get on at the terrace, who knows might see you at training. I have the black and white fluffy who des not enjoy getting his feet damp on a tuesday night. Can you PM me details for the terrace pls? Bec
  2. Ooops see I have newbie written all over me I didnt remember the prefix just the van...it was cute! I watched some pugs the show I went to last. They had loads of character I liked that they looked like they were having fun. Its funny, the breeds seem to taken on their own personalities. Do you get up this way poocow? Going to hide now lol
  3. He gets conditioner - although I let it sit for 5 mins not 10 cause he is too pathetic and gives me those pupp eyes and shivers:) Hes a soft coat Just human grade fish oil and vit e? Cheers Bec
  4. Miss B how on earth do you keep him white. Most of the time he has a weekly bath occaisionally in this weather its 2 a week. I use fidos puppy on him then one in 4 a whitening shampoo but tis week I noticed he has a little staining on his legs from chewing??? so I wondered weather an oil supplement is worthwhile. I have tried sardines but he doesnt go nuts for em. Goes mad for tuna in olive oil when I eat it for lunch maybe some of that instead??
  5. I understand a little where you're coming from. We lost our Maltese who was 11 yrs old and our baby in Feb. It was just over a month of trying to get a diagnosis. We saw 4 different vets in the same practise. We originally presented with decreased appetite and lethargy increased thrist and urination. Could have been any number of things really. But as I said to this vet I am a nurse and I know my dog who was my shadow, but I think she is really sick, and has a cancer. We explored many avenues, all things we assumed would give a definative, some gave vague results. One vet gave us hope saying they didnt think it was a tumor, the next took it away, finally on a later x ray we got our answer. They supported her through and gave us an amazing week of our baby, priceless for our kids. In the end we chose to end her suffering as soon as her good week was wearing off. It was the last thing we could do for our loyal baby. Our vets couldnt have had the same instincts for our girl we had. They didnt know her like we did. All they could go off we the clinical symptoms I gave them. So although I was right in the end, they had to do right by her and make sure and for that I am grateful. This decision is one you make and live with for the rest of your life. Especially when they are so much a member of your family. If you have doubt seek a second opinion because you need to be sure. As for the vet - honestly would an early diagnosis make that much difference given it was quite clearly aggressive in nature. If not, let the anger or dissapointment go. Dont let bad feelings get in the way of loving your baby in the final days or remembering your special friend wishing you kind thoughts to your family at this time bec
  6. wow. well done!!!!!. we are only in baby puppy both the dog and I can learn together its a competition who will disgrce the other the most lol. Just kidding. we are using at a way to learn the ropes with no pressure......well almost none......
  7. I will although I am quite certain it will be very obvious lol Do you show at hillsborough? I think I may have seen a "pug van" there similar to your siggie? Bec
  8. For those who have show dogs or dogs very regularly bathed. Do you supplement your dogs diet with oils to keep a nice coat and minimise skin irritation from bathing? Bec
  9. Sounds like a great start to showing. I didnt intend to show. I went looking for a great pet after we lost our "baby" 11yr old malt early this year. The lovely people of the Hav thread inc Toby's breeder, ever so GENTLY , encouraged me to give it a go. So thats what we are doing. I had been to 2 shows but payed attention to the breeds not the judging. The lovely lady who is holding my hand is owns the first Hav we met. Only had one locally since for me to watch. And one lesson only. Bec
  10. Glad to see I am not the only one I can soooooo see toby doing something naughty like going toilet and trying to eat it I took him to show training and he was okay with the other dogs but I am not sure how he will go with alot in one area. Prob try to bark and get them all to play. He is an only puppy at the moment so its all too exciting when we see other dogs....... The shows locally have been a bit scarce so watching the process has been limited. Did the judge instruct you on what to do when, or did you just know? Bec Edited to add what a gorgeous puppy you have .......and such a practical colour
  11. Just though if anyone else is hitting the ring for the first time they may want to pop in here??? Maybe we can share our experiences, stuff ups ect lol.....a bit like a newbie support group So I am Bec, about to hit the ring on the 26th for the first time. I am showing a Havanese. I am nuts....he a coated predominantly white dog Never been around showing dogs and my breeder is in a different state. She is however very supportive and I have a great lady willing to hold my hand for my first show even though she has her hands full herself (Thanks JO!!!) Bec
  12. I have posted in some of the ear threads recently as we have seen two of the clinic vets on vacc appts about them. The last one we saw recommended vinegar and water 50/50 solution. fill the ear all the way and good massage. He said he always recomends to wet a cotton ball and wipe the ear over to check for any reaction before doing this incase it stings them. I asked which vinegar he said white is fine but any will do so hopefully it will work with ACV Bec
  13. We have been to the vet during the week for toby's last needle. Got this vet to look at his ears again and He had a good look said no infection or mites but very hairy and waxy debris. Plucking was advocated again. he has ears that sit close and is a bugger to pluck but the difference in his ears even over the past 2 days has been huge. There is one question I would like to ask, especially the groomers here, how do you keep them dry when washing your puppies. Our little bugger shakes his head till the collon balls are gone (then tires to eat them ). Bec
  14. great tip with the stockings....never would have thought of that
  15. I asked my vet about this just over a week ago as my dog has "hairy old man ears". My pup is 13 weeks and the ears had a faint odour (very faint but there). Anyway, my vet had a look see and told me to pluck out the hair showed me where and how. He had waxy stuff and recomended epioptic in his ears twice a week, massage and the wipe with cotton balls the excess and around the ear. She was more concerned about infection if regular ear routine wasnt maintained. Cheers Bec
  16. We went to Hamilton today for vaccinaions and they were great Really nice only one minor hiccup when they asked me what my lovely pedigreed Hav was crossed with Guess thats what happens when you have a rarer breed. Thanks everyone for the lovely advice I did my school work experience at Merewether vet clinic way back in high school lol Bec
  17. We tried the uh uh and giving him a toy then praising when he chews it. This is something we have done very consistently since he came home. Even the kids do it. The only thing worth not chewing the carpet for was the dentabones Its been 11 yrs since i had a puppy lol He sooo gorgeous and smart.....just a brat too
  18. Pup is 12 weeks and the only thing I have found that works is squirting him with a little water
  19. Basically two questions in one post.... Veges what do you give and how often and how do you prepare them?? Just looking for suggestions healthy snacks for my pup. Also in another thread I saw a post mentioning a food dehydrator to make jerky/treats. Can anyone expand? provide recipies ect. It would be nice to make him some treats he can chew that are good fo him. Thanks in advance Bec
  20. Hey guys, thankyou all for your responses. I have taken the dentabones away. The reason we liked them basially was becuse he did. It was something he would sit and chew quite happily that wasnt one of us :D He is an indoor dog and with a 4 and a six year old it was preferable to a meaty bone in the house. Its wet and cold out and toilet training in the rain is enough lol! He weighs only 1.6 kg as of today (been for vaccs). I am more than happy to give whole raw chicken necks but I tried 2 nights ago and had to retrieve the thing from his oesophagus so I am hapy to mince them with a cleaver till he s able to chew them. Any advice, tips or toy recommendations greatly recieved. We have a little sucess with a kong but not really with his nylabone or other toys. I went to get him a tug just and treat ball but they were bigger than him so waiting for small sizes on those. The other thing he is doing is digging and chewing at the carpet????? ANY advice on how to stop this its driving me mad - the dentabone just kept him from that but I want something he can have all the time. Bec
  21. So we have a delightful but chewy 12 week old Havanese. as part of trying to get him not to chew on us we gave him some of these. huge hit and one of the few things that he will sit and chew on. Are they bad for him too often?? I got him a puppy nylabone today but he cant devour it in the same way. TIA Bec
  22. Thats the one that I have heard good things about :p
  23. Hi guys - needing some help or recommendations. I want a really good vet in newcastle - I live in Lambton so reasonable local would be good. I have always used the RSPCA vet facilities and have had mostly all very positive experiences. Seriously I have had amazing veterinary service from them but I would like to start with a new vet simply because I will be able to have a constant vet. When Soph got ill we saw 4 different vets in a week - all with different inital opinions and plans. They all agreed in the end and our final vet was simply incredible - if she were in private practice I would just go where she was. I have heard Hamilton is ok?????
  24. Okay guys looking for some age appropriate treats for my boy. He is an 11 week old Havanese (small dog). He hasnt been interested in his puppy kong much with kibble in it. I havent wanted to bomard him with too many new tastes since he's been here 2 weeks tomorrow as I didnt want to upset his lil tummy. So what do you recommend for fillings? Tonight I put some four paws chopped into it that seemed to get his attention for a little while. Also I am after new treat balls/treat toys. Any recomendations for toy rotation? We have the kong wubba, the puppy kond a small tennis ball, squeeker toys oh and his fave very expensive toilet rolls! TIA
  25. Yup his breeder said she gave the litter chicken necks bashed up as theyre still tiny dogs. Just thought while I was checking on the tuna question I would check the frequency. The dry food is fine and we also have another food that his breeder was feeding that he gets too. Although it doesnt compare to chicken necks for him obviously My old malt NEVER chewed and had bad teeth so we are keen to discourage bad habits so will be graduating his to full necks when hes able thanks bec
