  1. I can understand your frustation. It seems that those on here who ask the question of puppy owners strike up a conversation first and then ask the question. You mentioned that they don't do that, so it sounds like they might not be dealing with you in a very polite manner. Do you feel that they are accusing you of being an irresponsible owner rather than caring more about the welfare of the puppy? Also if you're having a bad day, it's easy to be more sensitive to people's tones and approach. If I was genuinely concerned, I go up to the owner and the pup, ask for a pat and say how gorgeous, he/she is, ask what age, and then ask if he's had his vacs. Or, for example, if I visited the New Farm Park dogpark after that irresponsible rescue organisation took a dog there with parvo, I would go up to people and say that a dog had recently been here with parvo and ask if their dogs are vaccinated. I would make it clear that I was helping them and not accusing them of being irresponsible. By what you're saying, they haven't taken this route and have been almost aggressive in their tone. At first I was shocked by what you said to that woman, but it was kind of like the straw that broke the camels back and it does sound that she gave you a bit of a fright anyway alarming you in a way that sounded like an emergency. A lot of people react out of character when they have a big fright. I'm sure if she had come up to you politely it would have been a different story. So don't be too hard on yourself, you must be shocked that you reacted so out of character, but I do think the fright and someone riding your horse without permission played a bigger part than what the woman actually said.
  2. What about an English Springer Spaniel? They don't fit the short coat criteria (but they can be clipped every couple of months and all is good) but they fit every other criteria. I've only had experience with the one my brother has but he is a velcro dog completely to my brother, doesn't have a big prey drive, easy to train, intelligent, lovely temperament, very fit and sporty, but can also be a couch potato. I think he weights around 20kgs. The Britany's are lovely looking dogs and I also like GSPs. ETA: I agree with the poster below about getting a showline english springer.
  3. I sent you a PM :-) Advise your friend not to rush. she may need to wait a little while for a great dog from a great breeder.
  4. Just goes to show how nieve you are, personaly i know 4 dogs that have hung themselves all due to collers being caught up, also another that was thanfully rescued just in time with teath being caught in another dogs collar. I had a blond moment one day and left diesels collar on when i went to the corner store and came home to him crying with a tree branch lodged in his collar. I acctually recomend people to not leave collars on unsupervise as it is just to risky. However with people like you around it makes me wonder how many dogs / cats are just kept insted of following the rule's and handing them in to the appropriate people. If you really cared you would do the right thing and not be so selfish next time. I also had the experience where my dog was sitting on one of those plastic outdoor chairs and he put his head down and his round id tag got caught because it twisted "locked" through the gap in the seat of the chair. If I wasn't there he would have struggled, tried jumping off and possibly severely hurting himself. From that day we didn't use those id tags and I had details embroidered on the collar.

  10. only if you over feed them, mine aren't oh u have met mine ;) My two aren't either! Anyway, wombats are cute :D
  11. Picky much. You've made about a dozen assumptions about how things are set up, including if she has an assistant, how safely confined the children are, what they are sleeping in etc etc. Why not make just ONE assumption, that is, she's fulfilling her duty of care, and offer some advice on her choice of dog. There's always one!
  12. The second (?) poster mentioned that they feed their puppy pasta, so that might be where you got it from. I don't understand why anyone would include pasta or bread or rice in a meal for a dog.
  13. Sounds like a good idea. I haven't fed dry for 7 years so I wouldn't have realised this, but it makes a lot of sense.
  14. Optimune works a treat. The cheaper thing you can do on a daily basis is to give human eye gel drops. I do the genteal gel. it seems to work.
  15. Don't be fooled by the starving look in their eyes if you reduce the food. ooops... I just went to add the above to my post then in a flurry of weird keystrokes the rest of what I wrote was deleted. I think my keyboard is possessed! To summarise: Try feeding no more than 2% of body weight Dry food is apparently balanced so no need to add extra protein, therefore try feeding the chicken necks without the dry twice a week for teeth (maybe try a Turkey wing, which would be even better for teeth) I found chicken to be quite fattening for my cavs so added reason to cut back on chicken necks.
  16. I found Jetpets to be a lot easier and more professional as well as cheaper.
  17. I've been feeding it for several years and as far as I'm concerned it's the best food on the market. My dog with mitral valve disease had a cough and when he had a premium dry food (Black Hawk & Artemis) he wouldn't stop coughing because he was retaining water due to the salt content (this was causing his stomach to swell thus leaving less room for his enlarged heart and causing problems for his trachea), whereas on VAN his coughing was reduced considerably and it prolonged his life by a number of years (after 3 days on the dry we seriously thought he was going to die because he was almost continuously coughing). The fact that all of my dogs barely need to drink while on the food is very pleasing. You might hear some people say that they don't digest some of the complete mix... this is deliberate as some of the ingredients are there for roughage to help form the faeces as well as helping express the anal glands. My dogs have never had problems with their anal glands. I honestly can't recommend it highly enough. Have a read of Dr Syme's articles on his site about the science behind the food. He has put a considerable (10 years) amount of research into it, and is one of very few vets in Australia that have actually got off their butts and researched diets (one other being Dr Billinghurt). I personally like Dr Syme's food better as the science behind sits very well with me.
  18. Hogwartzboxers ~ You're doing a great job bringing attention to this issue. I've now made a donation.
  19. These are good questions. If it were me, I'd do as suggested by someone else, and take him somewhere else and test him. Maybe to a nice quiet path that goes through a lovely treed area, somewhere that appears completely non-threatening (I have one of these I drive to near me and he loves it).
  20. I must admit that even though my dog did this because of hip dysplasia he also does the same thing when he's anxious and this is usually at dog parks or in places where there are a lot of people. I know it's not his hips because we haven't been there long enough, but after about 5-10 minutes of being at the markets or the dog park he's tugging on the lead and wanting to go home and will not let me walk any further in any direction that is AWAY from the car or home. There was one time that all I wanted to do was pop back into the markets to get some quick takeaway lunch and he would not budge. He dug his little feet in and leant back as far as possible with the lead in his mouth tugging on it. There was a lovely lady watching on who asked if I wanted her to hold him so I could go back in for a couple of minutes and I took her up on the offer! So yeh, now that I think about it more, because my dog suffers from both, it's either a physical soreness problem or an anxiety-related problem... since you said you don't think it's physical it's most likely some type of anxiety about something. Your dog may just not like the noises outside, or the cars or what other people have suggested. In Bailey's case if he's anxious he will not accept food so that wouldn't help, so I just take him where he's comfortable. This is Bailey at Woofstock when he decided he wanted to go home. He gets a really anxious look in his eyes (the doggy readers can probably see that) and then he tugs. The pic doesn't show him at his tugging best tho lol
  21. My dog used to do exactly this and he has since been diagnosed with Hip dysplasia. He would tug on the lead and be impossible to move and would always want to go back home. I feel bad now for forcing him because he was obviously hurting. Since he's lost quite a bit of weight he's happier to walk for longer, but now I know how far to walk him because he starts pulling up lame if I go too long. I'm just happy that he's comfortable enough now to walk at an ok pace for around 45 minutes, the weight loss helped a hell of a lot because previously he would walk only 5 minutes.
  22. Does anyone know where I can find some details about this year's show, particularly the times and dates of canine judging? I tried looking on the site but could only find information for August 11 where it says Groups 4 & 5. Does anyone know which group Cavaliers and Corgis fall into? I remember one year that they had more comprehensive information... it's highly possible that it's a bit early at the moment though and that more information will be published closer to the time.
  23. I thought anal glands too. I feed a raw food that has roughage so my dogs have never had a problem with theirs.
