  1. Thanks guys, no news so far which is good. My regular vet wasn't going to be in until 12 so we decided to leave him there to be monitored and wait for my vet unless he deteriorates at all. Still freaking out a bit
  2. I've decided just to take him down cos I won't be home this morning. Hopefully he won't stress there
  3. Thanks Anne, he's started shaking when he is sleeping too. Just about to take him down to the vet I've got a sickening feeling we might be going down to a 1 dog family soon
  4. Thanks guys. He's started trembling a bit too. I'm not sure if I should leave him at the vet for monitoring or keep him with me
  5. So about 2 weeks ago, we were at the park and doof suddenly yelped, and his right eye went all droopy - the top eyelid covered his eye almost completely and his 3rd eyelid came right across. We couldn't see any reason why it happened. It improved after a few hours and a shot of dex, was back to normal by the next morning. This morning it's happened again, but this time with both eyes. I'm just about to leave for the vet but just wondering if anyone has any ideas why it's happening? He's a 13 year old kelpie x GSD who has been in good health his whole life. He seems a bit depressed today, he's just going back to sleep. I'm worried it could be a stroke?? Any advice or ideas would be great!!!
  6. Doof eats play dough and crayons. Today's poos were pink, although he generally prefers green
  7. Are you going to book your male in for castration now?
  8. It's fine to freeze it, then defrost as needed. I am usually happy to feed stuff 3-6 months past expiry :)
  9. I've always said the only reason doof is obsessed with fetching and stealing tennis balls is cos he wants a stash just in case the vet says they can be surgically reattached to replace his testicles
  10. At Christmas a few shops asked me for donations, but the way they did it was to ask if I would round up my total. So if I'd spent 18.50 they would ask if I would like to round it up to $19 or $20 and the extra money go to a charity. I always said yes to those ones, for some reason I found it less abrasive. Otherwise I refuse every time
  11. Doof does it, I've found looking at him like he's an idiot and telling him we all know he isn't dominant enough for that stops him pretty quick
  12. My childhood dog Riff did the same thing once but decided to get himself down. We came home and heard him yelping, went around the corner and he was on the roof with his front legs braced against the guttering with a 'don't you dare laugh!' look on his face. He never did it again
  13. This is what I would do That's what I have always done too with tiny or old dogs around. I have tied the bedroom door handles together with rope too in case any little naughty one decided to go in there anyway. We do this too. Doof goes in our room when there are kids here because his anxiety makes me feel it's safer to have him locked up. Bear is fine with the kids, but we have one friend with a kid scared of dogs and so they both go in our room. They get a kong or empty peanut butter jar and they're happy. Doof is far happier in his quiet little bubble than with a bunch of screaming 2 year olds anyways. It's not just about the visitors, it's for my dogs well being. My husband grew up thinking he was attacked by a dog as a toddler. He was actually knocked over by an over exuberant GSD, but his family isn't dog savvy and that's how they interpreted it. I owe it to my dogs to keep them safe and I don't ever want to be in a situation where they have inadvertently injured a child by being their usual happy (in doof's case, crazy) selves, and they get into major trouble as a result
  14. If you decide to take them up the hill to the snowfields, you need to make sure you drive through hotham to dinner plain (hotham is national park, dinner plain isn't). Make sure you don't take them into the national park as they do a lot of fox baiting. Dinner plain is about 15-20 minutes past hotham and is very dog friendly though. If there is a lot of snow the drive up the hill is a big scary though!
  15. If the council won't act on the basis of the injuries to the dogs, wouldn't the injuries HW suffered put the attack into a different category?? I can't believe they aren't taking stronger action based on Stan and Maddy's injuries, but surely once a person is injured too they need to take it much, much further?
  16. Thinking of you, Stan and maddy this morning. I hope the council tracks down the owner and makes them pay all your vet bills too.
  17. It's a bit awkward now she's talking and was found yelling across the playground at her friends today '(insert friends name) COME!' then when her friend came over she got told to sit. I think it's hilarious but it seems to be worrying the other grown ups
  18. I'd only start to worry if you take bub for immunisation and before you realise it you're sitting at the vets. I can't tell you how many times I've taken the girlchild to the doc and said 'look, I think she's fine, but if she was a puppy I would take her to the vet' Or the shocked looks you get when you offer advice to a friend with a kid and finish it with 'I dunno, it works for dogs' Or my personal favourite was when she was at gymnastics a few months ago and rolling over on the mats and her teacher said to me 'wow she's really good at rolling' and I said 'yeah I was out in the yard with the dogs doing some training last night. I told bear to roll over, then doof to roll over, then I looked over at the girlchild and she rolled over so I told her she was a good girl and repeated it' And then come those special days where she forgets she isn't a dog and puts her hands behind her back while eating dinner 'like bear' She also uses the dog door instead of the back door....
  19. It's not a term I would ever use. In this house we prefer to call them 'the nutbags'
  20. Bear's current favourite foods are watermelon rinds and bubble bath bubbles Doof prefers lollies
  21. Doof since he got older gets very anxious at any displays of excessive happiness. So if we are watching a really funny movie or the girlchild is going crazy on the trampoline and laughing her head off, he gets so worked up we tend to need to lock him in a quiet room until we stop laughing. He's odd.... I used to ride with a friend who's horse would freak out at certain coloured cars. The colour he would freak out over changed daily, so the first 20 minutes were always nerve racking while we waited to see which.colour he found offensive that day. He also extended that to being mailboxes of whatever colour he was hating too, but not until he saw the offending car first.
  22. The northern beaches I would say bayview dog park, Blackbutts at belrose and at Ives showgrounds
  23. My old girl Kerry was 20 years and 11 months when she had to be PTS. She was a border collie x Labrador
  24. We have what we call the 'bear bowl' in the fridge each day. Everything the girlchild doesn't eat (which can be a fair bit depending on her mood!), apple, cucumber and carrot tops and peelings etc get dumped in the bowl through the day and given to the dogs with dinner. I was getting so ticked off at the amount of food that we wasted and the dogs love it (and all those vege peelings have been great at getting the weight off bear!)
  25. It might be a bit over the top but many years ago we had a holiday house at the beach that we spent every summer at with our cousins. The boys slept on the closed in verandah and it got very hot so dad decided one year to hire a refrigerated shipping container and let the boys sleep in there, apparently it worked brilliantly and everyone wound up sleeping out there in the end!
