Hi Maree, He found out the howl gets attention quickly so he's going to use it to his advantage You can try to extinguish the behaviour by totally ignoring him when he howls. The trouble is being that loud I guess there are times you can't ignore him? You could try something loud and sharp to distract and stop the behaviour and then ask him for something appropriate and reward for it. Such as .... He's in the other room and has started howling. Make a short sharp sound such as dropping a tin with coins in it (just an example). If it's loud enough to get through his howling he will probably stop momentarily and just as he is quiet you could call him to you and ask him to sit or something like that and reward. You do need to get the timing spot on. You could also use a water spray - a squirt in his face would stop most. Of course that is if he is near you. Asking in the training thread will probably get you lots of good ideas. I've never had a howling Cavalier Thanks for your reply I will try the loud noise I did try the water but didnt ask for him to do something so I will try that too, thanks so much I really appreciate it Maree

Hi I have Oscar who is 7 months old, he has just been desexed and has started to do something a bit unusual. When he came home from the vet (after being desexed) we were all worried about him and he was crated for his safety. Well he got lonely and let out this howl and of course we all came running thinking he was in pain, well he wasent he just wanted our attention. Now that he is ok, he is using the howl, and its very load and goes on and on to get what he wants. Ok how do I stop him from doing this. He is just the most adorable dog and very affectionate and just wants our time, he loves nothing more that just hanging around with us and yes he is just a tad spoilt. Maree

Oscar was desexed last week, and a couple of days later hes humping everything he can find. Hes also getting a big penis lol ok my question is I thought having him desexed would prevent this? Could it be from the extra blood flow to that area from the operation? or he just being a boy?

Hi I just want to let you know what has happened, I went to the vet and got Oscars last needle and spoke to the vet about what happened, he agreed that Oscar dosent need a bad experience but also pointed out that I shouldnt miss out on the last lesson, either go on my own or go with Oscar and keep him on the lead. So I rang the Trainer, I thought she really needs to know how I am feeling and its a bit unfair to just not turn up without giving her some feedback and that way she can learn from this experience as well. She was fantastic, she would like me to come to the last lesson and bring Oscar and she said she will keep all the dogs on leads, and maybe let Oscar off with one passive Dog, believe it or not but his friend and passive dog is a Rotty, hes such a lovely dog and very gentle. Anyway she also invited me to come to as many of the other puppy classes as I like (no extra charge) and now that she is aware of Oscar and his problem, she will make sure its a positive time for him and only associate him with small dogs until he is happy to move on.She also has one other cavvie in one class that we can meet and maybe set up a play date with them. So I am going on Monday with the restraints put in place and I hope all is a positive experience for Oscar. Thanks again for all your replies, if I didnt get the support here I may not of followed my gut instinct and who knows what may of happened., Maree

Thanks for all the replies, I think I might give the last class a miss, he is doing so well at home with the training and I will look into an obedience club as some of you suggested. I am in Campbelltown, does anyone know of a good club out here?

Hi The Teacher is a qualified trainer but there are 7 pups in the class and 3 are larger breeds, I really dont want to take him back for another bad experience

Oscar is 16 weeks old and has been attending puppy pre school for 3 weeks, the trouble is he is the smallest in his class, he is a cavalier king charles and every week he ends up getting a nip from one of the other pups. Monday night at class I noticed that he was becoming submissive and running away from the other pups or just watching them play from under a chair, I am so worried that puppy pre school might of done more damage than good. I pointed this out to the Teacher who said he needs to socialise more with other dogs, the trouble is I dont know of anyone who has a dog we can visit, and as he still has to get his 3 vacaccination this week we cant go visit parks etc. So my question is, should we go for the last week of puppy preschool next week or do you think it might be more harmful than good? Oh I just want to add, hes not a timid dog normally, he is wonderful with kids and people. Maree

Hi With the cold weather approaching I was wondering if I should get a jacket for my 16 week old Cavalier, he sleeps inside and has a nice cosy bed with lots of blankets but I was worried he might get cold. What do you think? Maree

Hi I love the idea of a puppy diary, but why not make it a scrapbook? you can get a small scrapbook fairly cheap from lincraft and add pictures of your little pup along with certificates etc I am a mad scrapbooker so I think I will do this. If you need any ideas email me. Maree

Finally, we tell Shiraz, "no biting" and a quick growl. His biting has really subsided but he was shocking from 8-12 weeks, although I think most puppies are like this. Enjoy... I too have a 12 week old puppy, and he also has been biting, so when he bites a bit hard, I give a yelp and stop play, he soon got the idea that he hurt me and the game was off and now he just licks me to death. We had our first week of puppy preschool and they told us that the pup needs to know the difference in a soft bite and hard bite, so when there older and get carried away playing they wont give a sharp bite to someone. good luck and enjoy them while there little Maree

Hi try putting a soft cuddle teddy in with the pup. I also have a 11 week old and this has been a life saver, he cuddles into the teddy and thinks its one of his brothers or sisters. I also feed my pup in his pen, I also stick to a routine, take the pup out for regular toileting, feed around the same time, and at night when it gets dark I put an old bed spread around his pen, so he knows its bed time, and it seems to be working well. Just a question though, puppies need to be fed lots during the day, how will you do this is if you are both working? I work but my kids go to tafe and college and are home by lunchtime to feed him. good luck with your little one, if you have probs ring your breeder, maybe he might need to go back to his siblings for another week or two. My little boy was 9 weeks old and has never cried at night since we got him. take care Maree

Bunnings Wire Compost Bins As A Puppy Pen Big Thumbs Up
misspup replied to NTC's topic in Puppy Chat
I had an old baby playpen that I converted, then bought some plastic lattice that has small holes so puppy cant get its face caught in and then I put it around the pen. It works really well and only cost me $20 for the lattice. Maree -
You mentioned a crate, I have one of those dog carriers meant for plan travel, is this what you mean? or more like a cage? Maree
