I'm happy the hair dryer works for you Melo ;) But when I get home from work on a Friday night and have at least three Sammys to wash and dry (5 this week ) for a show the following day I thank dog for my blower Any 'hot' source of drying will burn a Sammys coat eventually, it may not be as noticable as singing it may just show up as a yellowing or greying or it may be more subtle such as ruining the texture of the coat

It takes me about an hour to completely dry my boy who has a big coat and probably half that time for the puppy or my girl who is naked at the moment with my blower. You can pick them up on from ebay for about $200 or try you luck in the classified section and you might be able to get a second hand one. I think using a hand held human dryer it would probably take me about 6 hours to completely dry Bundy and yes they would be too hot All my dogs lie down on their sides and also stand to be groomed, so getting tired isn't an issue not matter what their age. I wouldn't worry about the brown nose, we are babysitting my puppys granddaddy at the moment and he has a permanant brown nose. The nose can be black or brown.
  3. BB, I have an Aust bred dog, a minor bitch, an intermediate bitch and the neuter, and I have consecutive numbers! I think I have a fair chance of getting BOB as well! Are you going to Mt Gambier BBJ? We are headed there on Friday night with the Sammys

  5. Mmmm I would have to leave at 4 to get there at 6.15 with three 'white' 'coated' dogs Does anyone know how far the carpark is from the rings, is bunking down in the car a viable option
  6. A friend (ex friend) purchased a Maremma x Blue Heeler from a pet shop. Lovely dog but not suited to living in the suburbs with two young children, she treated him like a baby, he was rather heavy handed. He attacked another child before he reached his second birthday
  7. As Bindii said we have two *almost* unbeatable Grand Champions in our breed who are out week in week out. We were both newbies a year ago and it has taken a year and lots of blood sweat and tears for both of our dogs to be titled but how much sweeter is it when you do win
  8. You are 100% right. My boy had been on a bit of a winning streak with 5 BOB's 3 RUBIG's and 2 BIG's in a row. The best he could do last weekend was win his class, so it just goes to prove the point. My boy was Intermediate in Show at our Vic Champion Show, a BIG winner two weeks ago and at the Royal last week, 5 out of 6 :D His worse result since both of us stared showing, we have never been shock, horror unplaced, even in classes with 10+ dogs Thankfully it was just his behaivour that had him dropped
  9. Any group 6 results And a huge thank you for ALL your results Sway and everyone else who provides them. Even though being a newbie I don't know many of them, I still enjoy following along at home

  11. Yes My eldest Samoyed Bundy is always dobbing on our Sibe, but never the other Sams. Gawd it makes me laugh. I know the bark too, so it is usually followed by me telling my oh HIS Sibe is up to no good AGAIN and HE had better go and see what SHE is up to
  12. And ............................................ before anyone attacks me (which has probably happened I am still on page 26 ) I am not attacking anyone who attended the rally. I support Oscars Law in its raw form and the passion, concern and compassion shown by those who attended, makes me proud to be human and want to kiss em but ............................................ I just really don't think the ramifications of pushing for tougher laws have been thought through properly
  13. This thread makes me feel sick and sad and angry I think one point everyone is missing is that the RSPCA already have the legislation and laws in place to shut down puppy farms, the simple fact is they don't want to. Puppy farms and bybs provide them with the raw commodities they need to make money both through donations and adoptions, ANKC breeders do not. Take a visit to your local shelter how many purebred registered dogs are there, how many crossbreds or byb staffy/mastiff crosses are there?? Puppy farms and BYBs provide the RSPCA with an income stream, registered, ethical breeders do not. It is registered breeders they will target not puppy farms The RSCPA already have the means to seize any dog from anyone, anytime, anywhere. It could be the most healthy, happy dog ever, it doesn't matter if you a breeder or not, the laws allow them to do whatever they please to that dog and IF they return it to you to charge you whatever they want and you have no right of recourse or complaint, full stop and you want to give them more power . Saying if you do the right thing you won't have a problem is the biggest load of crock I have ever heard. They can sieze anyones dog for NO reason whatsoever. The RSPCA have jumped on your bandwagon (for want of a better word - believe me I abhor puppy farms and would happily be thrown into jail to stop even one), they have taken the steering wheel and will take this where they want it to go, you are just passengers now *shakes head* how very sad :D for dogs everywhere
  14. Two Sams do it, but the other one and the Sibe don't :D However the Sibe has been know to sunbathe flat on her back with all four legs in the air in the middle of the lawn on 48 degree days
  15. Well I am just confused and don't know how to put my confusion into words :D I am a complete supporter of Deed not Breed, I had a rescue Bull Mastiff for 12 years that I loved with all my heart but taking nuture out of the equation and only looking at nature. Surely though some BREEDS of dogs are more prone to agression, have lower bite thresholds, have higher prey drives, are better herders, are better guard dogs (etc, etc), this is their intrinsic nature and this can't be changed, sure it can be managed with good handling and training but never changed.
  16. My step dad is what could probably be described as a soft core biker, he used to be hard core, he still has the bike and the gang just isn't interested in the drugs and crime now that he has his own kids He owns a Jack Russel and a Samoyed ;) out of his four best buddies, one has a kelpie, the other two oodles , another two labs and the other an assortment of cross breds from the pound. Not a "bull" breed to be seen but then they are quite 'odd'
  17. Holy hell you poor thing Reading that made me feel sick too, I hope your daughter is okay I know you are very upset but I would be demanding the council took proper action, the next time this happens the people/person/child may not be so lucky. Did you see which house the dog went into?
  18. No you don't Demo I have had mine since February and it has fallen apart, one wheel has fallen off, all the pins holding it together have fallen out, it is very unsteady and unstable and the bluddy thing attacks me Save your money and buy a good quality one, it is something I would never scrimp on again
  19. Possibly. My other question is how often have you inadvertantly rewarded barking outside the context of the show ring? Is it an effective method of attention seeking for him? He isn't much of a barker at all outside of the ring and at home, in fact he is probably the quietest, my two bitches and my sibe are very vocal at home. My sibe constantly chats back but it isn't an issue at home or at obedience. They do all bark when they are out in the paddocks playing but that would be it for him.
  20. Shaping just means waiting for him to offer the desired behaviour, marking and rewarding it. It can be challenging to shape a cessation of behaviour and frustrating for the dog. Ask for animation when you train. Don't reward barking. Reward silence. He'll learn to offer the behaviour that pays off for him. All you'll have done is caused the desired behaviour rather than waiting for him to offer it. Okay can I change the wording from shaping to making his behaviour work for me I can take him down to the park now and I know food treats and toys won't work but I do know he will work for me because he knows afterwards I will release and reward him by allowing him to sniff and snuffle around and pee on a few trees, this is what motivates him. If he doesn't behave we go home. I know this isn't the usual way of training but he isn't a usual dog and it works for us. I basically do what you said ^^ I don't reward barking and I do reward silence. He barks, I ask for quiet, he is quiet, I reward, he barks again ;) Interesting Do you think I have been duped by a dog who is offering unwanted behaviour because he knows I will then ask for the correct behaviour and then reward him for giving the correct response
  21. What might be worth a try is to teach a "watch" cue. Have him look up at you and reward for focus and quietness. (having food in your mouth can help this) Try holding a toy also. Extend the duration of the "watch" cue until you can hold a couple of minutes without noise. Then take it to shows and practice it outside the ring. If he's focussed on another task he's unlikely to want to bark if he knows the reward ONLY comes for quietness. What foods have you tried as rewards? What DOES motivate him? We have the "look" cue which works and I reward for but after a few minutes he will bark, so I ask for quiet and when he is quiet and calm again I will reward him again. He doesn't lose focus on me when he barks and usually doesn't take his eyes off of me while he barks, so I really don't think it is a focus issue. Gawd I explained that well ;) I haven't tried food in my mouth so I will give it a go, we use everything from roast chicken and steak, to cheese, kabana, hot dog, schmackos, dog chockies, you name it we have tried it. The couch motivates him, his breeder calls him Mr Cool and the the most laid back dog she has ever bred Over the top vocal praise works for him as well as a clear release Although I don't think I made myself very clear, I can take him in the ring he will perform like a robot, not bark and be perfectly behaved but he will also put his ears and tail down and mope around, the moment I ask for even just a little animation he barks. So I suppose we are walking a very fine line, I am hoping with age and as I get better I can get the animation with no noise That's why I thought Angelsuns idea of shaping his behaivour may be a good one??
  22. There are other options. Training for focus is one of them. Dogs are not all stacked in a General Specials line up for that long each time. There is a lot of down time while judges examine and gait dogs. However when stacked having your dog not distract others is nothing more than courtesy to other exhibitors. Most folk will accept that dogs are not perfect. But I'd not expect folk to react well if your dog barks each and every time its in a line up. Yes, other folk should expect to have proof their dogs against such things. On the other hand, if your dog does this each and every time he's in a class line up then I'd suggest you have a training issue. Its pretty tough to expect all the dogs in front of you in that line up not to want to turn around and see what your dog is barking at. That's what you're expecting of 5 exhibitors dogs every time you make a General Specials line up. In other words you're asking other handlers to have a higher standard of behaviour with their dogs than you expect of yours. I'd say work on the issue and in the mean time, also work on getting a focus cue going and determining how much of a correction you can give your dog without shutting him down. Oh, and have a belt of rescue remedy for your nerves. As far as I'm concerned this is only an issue if you're not doing anything about it but continually expecting others to manage their dogs to cope with your dog's behaviour. Thanks PF ;) We are working on it, it isn't something I am just ignoring. As I said when he barks he does bounce/bob (NOT jump and up down) as does any dog when the bark and he then puts his perfectly stacked up front out, which isn't a good look so I would prefer he doesn't We have been working on his focus for a year but he is a dog with very little drive and zero food drive which is challenging for me but we are sort of getting there. If you saw the difference between and year ago and now you would know what I mean Over the next few weeks I will try to teach him talk on cue along side the quiet cue. Maybe I can get him to talk just before he enters the ring and again afterwards and ask him to be quiet while we are in the ring. Rather than just trying to get a very vocal dog to be quiet. I used to take rescue remedy when we first started showing might be a good idea to get another bottle
