I always try and leave at least a dog length if not more in between my dog and the dog in front of me, and none of the dogs or exhibitors in front of him had a problem. The only time I will leave less is if I am told to move up by the steward or judge. I learnt that lesson quite awhile ago when I was getting boxed in by a few exhibitors I always leave myself room to move forward but can't dictate what others behind me do. Interestingly I really don't think the actual dog itself seemed upset or distracted at all just his/her handler. I have had dogs run up my butt, I have had a rottie exhibitor tell me in the group lineup she was taking her bitch home that afternoon to mate her, I have nearly tripped over food left on the ground, and have had a dog nearly eat mine for dinner and I must admit I don't really pay that much attention, because I am just happy to be there and focused on my dog. I don't want my dog to be a robot and definately don't expect him to be, he enjoys being in the ring, and when he is excited he talks ;) Angelsun I really do like your idea of shaping his barking to benefit us, we have three weeks off before the royal which will give us alot of extra time to work on it RSG if I didn't have any consideration for others in the ring I wouldn't ask the question and would continue on my merry way regardless

Thanks Ellz he is very special to me and if he never wins another thing I don't care well maybe I do because I like to win :D He has never barked at another dog, just at me, and yes I know he is very, very naughty. Personally I prefer him not do it because does he bounces at the same time and sometimes when he lands it isn't pretty. I try to give the dog in front of me as much space and room as possible and if he was to ever go over the top I would face him to the outside of the ring and move right away from everyone even if the timing was oh so wrong but this has yet to happen. My oh had the same opinion, that she had the problem but he has never set foot in the ring and is a bit of an armchair expert I just wanted to make sure we weren't breaking any unwritten rules but I suppose it is one of those things where some people have to find someone to blame rather than themselves and it may as well be the noisy naughty Samoyed and the newbie That could of been me behind you Cowanbree, yes he fidgets too, we also go to obedience once a week and train for at least 15 minutes once a day and a half an run before a show to get out any excess energy. What do you mean by more considerate of others, dismiss ourselves, even if the judge or steward hadn't commented or just give up (edited because it wasn't you in front of us) I will continue to work with him, myself, smile, apoligise and get on with it Angelsun I wish I had your confidence but telling them get stuffed just isn't me, but yes I have seen it alot. Those that whinge that their dog lost because of an in season bitch then bring one the next weekend. Silverhaze you just made me day, thank you, it is good to know I am not the only one. Only problem is I can stuff food in his mouth and he spits it out, sod he is.

I'll try and make this quite short because I have a habit of rambling ;) I have only been showing for a year so I am unsure of the what the unwritten rules of etiquette would be so I thought here might be a good place to get some different answers and views ;) My first show dog & I entered the ring barely a year ago when he had just turned one. Our first year of showing has been a rollercoaster, the highest of highs with a best in group, our title, multiple class in group and show awards as well of multiple best of breeds against some fantastic dogs and the lowest of lows with quite a few fourth out of fourths, my nerves, (I suffer from an anxiety disorder which I know can rub off on my dog) and his training 'issues'. He has zero food drive, I can literally slap him in the face with a steak and he will turn his back on me and being my first dog ever with no interest in food whatsoever has meant rather a steep learning curve for me. He is also a sensitive dog and if corrected will switch off which for a breed that should be animated is not a good thing Consequently we walk a fairly fine line in the ring between being up and showing and being norty. Nowadays this usually pays off for us but to begin with it didn't :p . Norty these days is usually in the form of a couple of things and one of those is being quite vocal in the ring. His is a breed that is naturally quite noisy, when your original purpose was to herd reindeer and you only weigh 25 kilos a big voice is an asset and when they get excited or happy or are playing they bark. My dog is for the most part happy and excited to be in the ring and every couple of minutes or so when we are stacked he will bark, he usually settles down after a while and doesn't bark incessantly (maybe 4 or 5 times every time we enter the ring) I have taught him the quiet command and he will quiet when I ask but will bark a few minutes later. We have never had a problem with any other exhibitors until the weekend, I am always mindful to leave as much distance between me and the dog infront as I can and if he becomes noisy I will turn him away from the ring not only to help him settle but so as to not disturb the other dogs. I have only had one judge comment and she said hey don't you start mister or I'll put you down there (she pointed) to the end and she went on to give us a class in group :D On the weekend in the BIS lineup another exhibitor became quite upset with us, she asked me to basically shut him up, I apoligised and asked him to be quiet, five or so minutes later he barked again, only once mind you and she was not very happy. Of course being the first time I had ever been in a bis lineup (we were shortlisted ) I was very nervous and over corrected him, he switched off and we blew any chance in the class in show lineup (oh well you live and learn ) So now that I have warbled :D :D what should I have done. Dismiss myself from the class, harden up and ignore her, apoligise sweetly and ignore her, send her a death stare or tell her to harden up. And ..................................... is a dog being vocal in the ring really that bad

I am lost for words RIP Little Imi

We have a bungalow she is welcome to use if she needs to evacuate, the animals would be more than welcome. The only two problems are we are 2 hours away and there is no heating, but there is power so she would need to BYO.

Says on their website: http://www.laa.org.au/ala/Codeofethicsrules.htm Suspension, a fine, kicked out, etc. What does the AnKC do to members that breach the CoE (genuine question)? Suspension, a fine, kicked out Cool, thanks! It is also printed (in Victoria anyhow) in the gazette for all members to see
-
Just food for thought but I wonder what penalties are imposed on ALA members who breach the their Code of Ethics
-
I've never seen a poodle with a herding title, at least not in this country as they are not an eligable breed. Why? Under ANKC regulations the eligable breeds are Group 5, plus Bernese Mountain Dog, Canaan Dog, Keeshond, Kerry Blue Terrier, Norwegian Elkhound, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Tibetan Terrier, Standard Schnauzer, Giant Schnauzer and Rottweiller. All breeds who have a history of herding. It is much like gundog trials are restricted to gundogs. Samoyed

Now been updated to 75 - 10 mm with torrential rain and flash flooding While I love the rain everyone please take care on the roads -
I think this is the the breed standard? Jaws strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. Upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

I benefitted from the experience of having a complete stranger come over and tell me that my dog wasn't show quality and pointing out his faults. However this wouldn't be acceptable these days, anyone who did that would be classed as a 'nasty dog show person'. What I'm saying is that it's sometimes better to tell things like they are instead of tippy toeing around issues and sugar coating everything. A dog with a bad mouth shouldn't be taken into the show ring, end of story. Ah got ya Miranda Believe me my mentor / breeder doesn't sugarcoat anything and I prefer it that way but imho that it probably isn't the best way to treat a noob stranger What does the standard say for this breed?
-
New exhibitors have it easy these days, when I started showing I had no help at all, there was no internet, no show training classes, no Dogzonline, I just bought a dog and took it into the ring. My first dog was very average and that's putting it mildly, he was refused challenges and once a class win. In the end someone took me aside and explained that the dog wasn't show quality and that he was never going to win anything and I'm glad they did even though I was very upset about it at the time. It didn't put me off showing however, I actually benefitted from the experience, found myself a better dog and kept going. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. ;) Huh, isn't that a bit contradictory. So you're saying your first dog wasn't show quality but you actually benefitted from the experience but this girl shouldn't show her pet quality dog. Or am I reading that wrong And just for the record before I get abused, my advice would be for your daughter to not take this dog in the ring either Scampers away because it is scary in here
-
I didn't know it was a test ;) I don't know just thinking of the old saying 'You catch my flies with honey' Not that I was calling you a fly Cupcake Surely "I don't think it is good idea taking a pet quality dog with an obvious fault into the ring because even though she may be the only person in the class it is quite possible the judge may non award the dog and that will cause more tears than her not going in at all" is a little kinder to a newbie than "Have a bit of bloody pride about what you take in the ring". Still gets your opinion across Okay yes it must be pmt. Herein lies the problem with dog shows and newbies I think Say a child wants to own and show ponies, so mum books them into lessons at the local riding school and they join the local pony club. A child decides they want to show dogs and what ................. mum whos only experience with dogs is the pound puppies they rescue from RSPCA can't really book in for lessons at the local show dog school. It's not an easy world for the uneducated to break into Now I am just warbling ;)

My dogs have come down with KC twice already this year ;) The first time it could of come from anywhere but the second time it could of only been picked up from a certain place, for the 2 weeks prior to developing symptoms the only time they had left our property had been to go there, we have no dogs on adjoining properties and no visitors (yes I know I am a loser , no truthfully I was working 12 hour days and our family was harbouring our own germs) Unfortunately one of my dogs developed a secondary infection and conjuntivitis Although my vet said once symptoms are gone it isn't contagious anymore but we have happily stayed home for the last three weeks We are out showing again this weekend, weather looks to be against us but self preservation means we will be staying well away from everyone, I really don't want sick dogs yet again with our first Royal coming up.
-
Wow maybe I have pmt but I agree that wasn't a very nice way to treat a newbie doler and a parent of a newbie shower ;) I thought the idea was to encourage newbies to showing It isn't as easy for your 'normal' owner to just return a puppy if it develops a fault once a bond is established. Cupcakes what show is your daughter intent on going to. We are only nooobs ourselves but if we are going to be there, I am happy for your daughter to come and join us for the day or even 10 minutes.

Paddyforever whereabouts are you currently living? Our rental is in Woori Yallock in the Yarra Valley, it will probably be available again at the start of January, although I can't make any guarantees it is entirely up to the current tennants who are on a short term lease because they are trying to find their own dream house If you are still looking in November/December and the location suits pm me then

Unreal. An investment is a luxury is it? I like it
-
$80,000 in rental income wow how do you know that are you their accountant If you are you aren't a very good one, because an investment property should be negatively geared not positively. They should run at a loss. The return comes in capital gains not income And sorry that was mean, yes I have my bitch hat on today My investment property isn't a luxury it is an investment in my childrens future. Take your average house worth $350,000, house prices double every ten years on average so when they are ready to buy a home in 20 years it will cost them about 1.4 million and there isn't a hope in hell they will be able to afford one then. I suppose I could take my $200 a week and put it in a savings account for 20 years and hand them $250 grand in 20 years. Or a 1.4 million dollar house, ummm hard decison to ensure my kids have a future. I suppose I was raised that you always pay yourself first, which means money into the bank or an investment for the future first, then bills and neccessities second, then luxuries last. Just because someone has an investment does not mean they are loaded and can afford to throw money around nor can they afford for their tennants to not pay the rent or trash the house just like because someone chooses to rent means they have are broke, on welfare or destitute. Seriously though I am just a little fish investor and you will find it is your little fish investor like myself that is willing to have pets and not your big fish investor. Your big fish couldn't give a toss about you and your animals they only see the bottom line whereas a little fish has a big interest in their rental home, we want our tennants to be happy, look after the house and pay the rent on time. Problem is houses get trashed and rent doesn't get paid, the big investors can afford it, the little ones can't so we sell up to the big investors and another house because No Pets Allowed. So you (in general not you personally) slag us off and lump landlords in the same category as car salesman, don't pay the rent on time, trash our hosues and then can't understand why we won't allow pets. But then again my house was advertised on here for two months, $300 a week for 3 bedrooms, two lounges, brand new kitchen, coonara, new reverse cycle split system air conditioning, new flooring, freshly painted, in ground pool, great undercover entertaining area, full fenced back years, 2 minutes walk to local shops, kindy, primary school, public transport, walking trail and pet friendly, happy to have up to 4 indoor/outdoor dogs and two cats, oh and only 45 ks from the Melbourne cbd about a 50 minute drive along Eastlink and I got ..................................... not one enquiry
-
Our mortage on our rental has gone up $400 a month in the last year, yet our rental income is exactly the same is it was a year ago and you whinge about $40 in 3 and half years As for the second comment I am sure your landlord who has paid for your dishwasher, air conditioner and plumbing to be repaired and probably done it tough themselves to ensure the repairs were carried is probably esctatic you care so little about the home you rent. Seriously after listening to all the landlord bashing going on, it makes me wonder why I bother going to the trouble of having PET FRIENDLY rentals, maybe that's why so few long term landlords bother
-
Wow, what a shocking attitude And that's from a landlord who has a pet friendly 3 bedroom property (inside/outside dogs, cats and ................... kids welcome) who is doing it tough financially. No 1 Most real estate agents and property managers have a blanket no pets rule. 99% of the time this isn't even discussed with the landlord. I had to really push the animal allowed point. No 2 We had ONE application when we last rented the property out, a three bedroom, 2 louge room house, new kitchen, split system ac, coonara, new floors, inground pool and fully fenced backyard for $300 a week, 1 application not hundreds. Thankfully for us it was a lovely young family with 1 indoor and 1 outdoor dog. I advertised this property on dogzonline and didn't get one enquiry. No 3 We as landlords after all our costs are out of pocket about $200 a week, my partner and I only earn an average wage, our cars are over 10 years old and we do it tough, we sure as hell can't afford to let our tennants do as they wish and if we wish to put 'numerous exclusions' on it so be it they are our houses, we are the ones drinking black and gold tea while our tennats are probably enjoying a cafe latte at the local cafe

My rescue Bullmastiff lived to 14 I was about 18 when I moved out of home and he was MY first dog and I have to admit I was pretty clueless ;) He was 12 months old when I got him and had been starved during his first year due to the owners not being able to afford to feed him properly. I bought whatever big bag of dry from the supermarket that was on special and he got a bucket :D of that everyday with all our scraps. He never got tinned food because the smell makes me dry reach however breakfast would be whatever cereal and toast my kids had not eaten and dinner could be anything from satay chicken and rice to the roast lamb (cooked :p ) bone and vegies. Later on his life we switched to Supercoat and lots of raw meat but still scraps. Wasn't unusual to find that he had raided my vegie patch and stolen a whole watermelon and was devouring it He attended the vet once in his life when I first got him for his shots until he got bone cancer, was never desexed, lived outside until his last years and was wormed about once a year. He rarely got walked but the kids and I spent hours outside everyday with him

I hear you whippets . We are on after lunch so I would love to be able to get there at 11 but we have had to set up outside everytime the entry has been over 800 this year when we have arrived after 9, let alone with an entry of 1400+. Not looking forward to getting white coated dogs ready outside in the rain and wind. Here's hoping those that have actually shown and aren't needed for specials are gracious enough to pack up, if they want to stay and watch a chair takes up alot less room than multiple crates, trolleys and tables.

Awwwwwwwwwwwww congratulations BB I showed my mentors old grand champ for Veteran In Show at the Vic Sammy Champs yesterday, it was lovely getting a standing ovation and he was so happy to be there ;)
