  1. If you are breeding small companion dogs then certainly. But if you are breeding large working breeds it's a different story and there are multiple aspects to consider.
  2. Personally, I would not buy a large breed puppy if it were desexed, regardless of whether it was a pet, show or sport dog. The same goes for any pup intended as working and/or sporting prospect. OP- Talk to the breeder and discuss your reasons for keeping the dog entire. You may be surprised. If not there are plenty of good GSD breeders around that will not desex their pups.
  3. Yep, all dogs have food drive. Just stop feeding for a meal or two then see if his interest in food increases ;) . It could be the treats you are using too, you may need to play around a little to find what works best. Prey drive is genetic. You can build and develop what you have (and most dogs have something!), but you can't put in what isn't there to start off with.
  4. I can't get there to watch the sheep run. Should be interesting though!!
  5. Completely normal. Put the crate next to your bed, toilet her as needed (and return her to the crate without fuss), give her a pigs ear to chew on and go back to sleep. The crate can be moved when she's sleeping comfortably through the night.
  6. You can use bamboo screening (or similar) attached with cable ties as a temporary and reasonably attractive visual deterent.
  7. Either use a second small split ring or an s-hook. Try the s/s collar tags from here: http://www.boomerangtags.com/store/index.php?A=G&ID=4. I haven't lost one yet. US website, however postage to Australia is $2 and they usually arrive within 10 days.
  8. Bulla, Vic. 28th January 2012. If you are interested PM me you email address and I'll send you the details.
  9. Mia Skogster will be in Australia in January 2012 for a seminar too ;) . Shame I'm too broke to go .
  10. Nope, it's pretty obvious to most that Kei is mine and I am his . Some people presumed that I would just get a small and/or "pretty" dog or that I wouldn't be able to manage a large dog.... hmmmm... wonder what they will say when the Maligator arrives
  11. Agreed. I'll be taking my pup out from the first day she arrives.
  12. Possibly a very dumb question But.. If several puppies from the same litter are being flown to the same location are they put into seperate travel crates? Or all in together? Thanks
  13. My Military pup? Love him, but soooooo active and fast. He's totally different to anything I've ever had before but I love having him and I'm learning about working dogs at the same time ;) Good to hear he is doing well. Do you have to do any specific training with him in preparation for his return? Bet you won't be when I'm sleep deprived and chewed on
  14. Yeah I'm not big on can't. Unfortunately hubby is
  15. They are damn cute and growing like weeds!:D
  16. Thank you for the answers. I was planning on using the 6 month implant initially. Given that it takes around a month to be fully effective I was planning on having my boy done when my female pup reaches 5-6 months (presuming that she would have her first season around the 7-10 month mark). It is really just to get us through that first season safely. From there I will make the decision on whether to re-implant. Well that is the plan anyway...
  17. OOS, did you find that the implant lowered the dogs food drive overall? Or he just ate slower/less at actual mealtimes? I'm considering one for my Ridgie as I'll be bringing home a female shortly (who will be kept entire). I was planning to go with a 6 month implant to see how it affects him, then to make a decision re desex, vasectomy or continue with the implant. However with the possibility of lowered food drive and a lazier dog I'm dabbling with the idea of a vasectomy instead...
  18. Personally I'd go for a metal crate for home and a soft crate for travel. Metal crate are very hardy, you can put a cover on to protect from the weather and make them more attractive. Soft crates are not really made to stand up to constant weather exposure - wind, rain, sun, etc. You'd need to peg it down to stop it blowing away! For good quality soft crates try K9+: http://www.k9softdogcrates.com.au/index.php?p=contact K9 Pro: http://www.k9pro.com.au/categories/Crates/ or if you want a good quality cheap option, Topbuy: http://www.topbuy.com.au/tbcart/product/Lightweight-XXXL-Travel-Crate-for-Pets-Soft-Waterproof-Fabric-Easy-Fold-Away-p14748.htm These are great as an outdoor/portable kennel too: http://www.houndhouse.com.au/ Hope that helps
