  1. 100% genetic. Environment and handling can bring out or suppress certain traits but they have to be there to start off with. I've seen absolute bogans treat their dog like crap, never train, socialise or walk it yet the dog is bombproof. Also seen some very good dog owners do all the right things and still end up with a skittish and/or aggressive mess.
  2. You put an 8 week old pup on a head collar?? Why??
  3. Or use a loose fitting DD collar in conjunction with your regular collar as a back up. eta http://www.ruffwear.com/Knot-a-Leash-Rope-Dog-Leash?sc=2&category=15 Clips on these leashes look pretty secure too if you're worried about it coming undone
  4. Sprenger Fur-saver clipped back on itself with a s/s carabiner clip. If you fit it high up on the neck it's impossible to break or slip.
  5. because it's called redirected aggression- it can happen Yes it can, hence the reason that children should never walk dogs alone. It's an accident waiting to happen. In fact I think it may even be against the law in some circumstances??
  6. From my understanding he was sighted in a forest/reservoir in the area by some locals on Monday night (after 7 days missing!!) but was terrified and unable to be caught. Council helped by setting up a cage with some food hoping to lure him in but it was empty both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Yesterday a local teenage boy spotted Obi, he was able to offer him some treats but not able to get a hold of him. Smart kid left the door open to his granny flat though and when Obi went in he was able to shut the door and contact the owners.
  7. I still walked and trained mine right through her season. Don't visit dog parks, off leash areas or group training and it's not an issue. Are you on a property or any grassed areas nearby? Take her out early mornings and teach her to track.
  8. Agreed. A lot of assumptions in this thread.. You don't know why the dog was declared dangerous in the first place (we're talking Victoria after all, might have more to do with the way he looks than what he has 'done'..) You don't know that the owner wasn't out looking for the dog - hence the reason why he was on the scene so fast You don't know how the dog slipped out the door Why presume that the owner doesn't care/won't pay the vet bills?
  9. Generally if you grab a dog by the back legs they will let go, you only need one person to do that though two is obviously going to be better. It's much safer than grabbing an unknown dog by the collar. I'm sure the woman was extremely grateful that you stepped in.
  10. Stay out of it. The woman has your contact details if you need to be involved, she has the other owners details should she choose to discuss it with them and/or report it herself. You stated that you contacted the council immediately after the attack whilst the two men restrained the dog so the incident has already been reported? I see no need to contact them again unless you are given good reason to. For future reference, if you ever need to break up a dog fight: http://leerburg.com/pdf/howtobreakupdogfight.pdf Grabbing an aggressive dog by the collar is extremely dangerous, I'm glad you weren't injured.

All portable and secure - put it in the shade, add a kennel and the pup will be fine. Dog runs are always handy regardless of your fencing.
  12. Re-posting from lost and found section as Obi is still missing and his owners and breeder are extremely concerned for his welfare. Can anyone who is in the Williamstown/Gawler/Adelaide Hills region (inc One Tree Hill, Kersbrook, Birdwood, Mt Pleasant, Springton,Eden Valley, Angaston, Nooriopta, Tununda, Lyndoch, sandy Creek, Cockatoo Vallet, etc) or has friends in this region please share the following link on facebook. Please keep an eye out for him in other areas as he may have been taken in by someone. Pounds have been contacted and flyers distributed. Thank you. https://www.facebook...&type=1 LOST* - Obi a 14 month old Male RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK went missing from his home in WILLIAMSTOWN on Monday afternoon during the stormy weather. He is Red Wheaten, height approx. 27.5 inches (70cm), weight approx. 45kg, with a small patch of white on his chest. He was wearing a blue collar with a council registration disc and a metal tag with owner contact numbers, and is microchipped. He is friendly, but will be frightened so may not be able to be caught. If you see a dog in this area, fitting his description, please contact Julie on 0432 878 354 or Clem on 0432 878 353 or message me facebook.com/ diane.stratton.71
  13. Plenty of people own working line dogs and lead normal lives, work full time jobs, etc. You don't need 'time' to train so much as you need a plan and good management skills.
  14. How long do the Silver eagle coats stay cool for? I recently purchased a Ruffwear Swamp-cooler. Really nice fit, lightweight and reflects the sun which is good. However I find it dries out very quickly and I'm constantly checking and re-wetting it. Ideally I'd like a coat my Ridgeback can wear whilst in the trailer on warm days when we travel.
  15. Quick question for those who use the skin and coat supp. Is it more cost efficient to purchase the sensitive skin mix or better to buy the regular complete mix and add the skin and coat supp to that? Have you found the sensitive skin mix or supp to make a difference to your dog? My younger dog has been on the puppy complete mix for close to a year and does well on it. I've recently switched my older dog who suffers from some minor allergies and skin issues - mainly ears and feet - to VAN complete mix also. He seems to be doing okay on it but wondering if the sensitive skin mix would be a better option for him?? They both get pro-biotics added now. Would probably stop giving that if I switch formulas due to the added Protexin..
