Vets All Natural - Perfect Puppy Nutrition
moosepup replied to Dr Bruce Syme's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks VAN. I think I might try it out once my patties run out (need to free up the freezer space!). :) You say the wet mix can be refrigerated for 5 - 7 days. Is that sans meat? I have a (nearly) 13 year old dog who had CL surgery in her younger years. She can be a little stiff when she gets up. Would she benefit from added Joint Formula or SC Powder? And one last thing, what are the benefits of VAN over BARF patties? Is it just the added roughage? -
Why can't a debarked dog be out in public? In case someone can't hear it coming? I've only ever met one and besides how weird it was to see a dog silently 'barking' it was the happiest little fluffer. It didn't seem bothered by its own noiselessness. I do think other things should be tried first and debarking left as a last resort but if it's a choice between that, murder or PTS, I'd rather have a silent dog.

Vets All Natural - Perfect Puppy Nutrition
moosepup replied to Dr Bruce Syme's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have a few questions if I may... :) In regards to protein, I presume you can add any preparation you like? Mince, chopped up breast, lamb straps, necks etc? Can you make up the Complete Mix, add protein and freeze in portions? I think you mentioned this before but just double checking. At the moment I feed BARF patties with Health Booster added. Will I leave out the HB if feeding Complete Mix? If I changed over to VAN do I need to do it gradually or can I switch straight over as I'm feeding raw already? And lastly, what do I do with all the BARF patties I have? Thanks :) -
Pet Insurance And Vaccinations
moosepup replied to moosepup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I thought that too but the policy clearly states that those diseases aren't covered, it doesn't say 'unless vaccinated'. This is it: -

Do they cover those diseases? That's probably the only one I didn't look at. -

But why do they need to know if they don't cover vaccinatable diseases anyway? The policies don't state vaccination as a requirement either. I claimed for Moose recently (Ratsak poisoning) and his las vacc was in Mar 2010 (12 mth booster) and there were no issues, I'm just curious. :) -
All the policies I've read clearly state that they do not cover any diseases that can be vaccinated for, ie. parvo, distemper, etc. Why then on the claim forms do they ask for the date and type of their last vaccination?

Are you sure he's a Chi? Food doesn't even get to hit the ground here.

It's good to wash it but you should definitely dry it afterward so that the area isn't kept moist. This applies to most wounds.

Moose ripped one of his nails off as a pup. If I recall correctly the vet gave him an AB injection and some painkillers and I just washed it with salt water. The vet did bandage it but it came off after a day. He looked like a right goose getting around with his 'boxing glove' on.

I would be worried about the concentration of ingredients in a large chew for a 5kg dog (even after breaking it up). I give Interceptor every 6 weeks and don't find it too expensive. I have to buy Very Small and Small though so its a bit cheaper. It costs me less than $70 for 8 months coverage.

Vet gave her the (nearly) all clear. No infection in the wee. She said it was a bit dilute but it has been really hot lately so she would be drinking more. She also doesn't think it's incontinence because she doesn't leak, nor does she pee in her sleep. The o ly thing she did say is that her vision would be quite poor (cataracts) but this isn't something I've really noticed. She gets around fine and gives you eye contact. I guess it is just a case of age and needing to pee more and she's just not making it outside. She is booked in to have her teeth done on Friday so will have a full blood screen then but otherwise she's all good. Bloody dogs. Here's my old duck :) (and the pest :D )

Is This Normal Healing? Update! All Has Healed And Is Normal
moosepup replied to Lhok's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ouch it looks sore, poor girl. It at least warrants a call I would think. -
Nawww poor fella. Moose has peed inside on occasion when they've accidentally been locked inside. I can tell its him because of the ears back and lack of eye contact. He's following me around like a little orphan at the moment cos Zoe is at the groomer. I've got Zoe's pee sample all ready for the vet (that was a fun experience!) so hopefully it goes well.
-
Totally! The unexplained and mysterious illnesses are the worst, we've had a few of those here. Glad Grumpy is feeling better Sheridan and little Zen Woofers. :)
-
Yup, she had geriatric bloods done last year when she had her teeth done and that was all good but definitely wouldn't hurt to do them again, thanks SnT. :) I'm trying to source a suitable 'catch tray' for the pee sample from around the house. The VN suggested a meat tray (washed thoroughly of course) but I don't have one.
-
Thanks Sheridan, I'm beginning to think that's what it is (age). Vet has asked me to bring a pee sample so I'm going to attempt that in the morning. She also has this strange behavior where she will just be lying or sitting on the floor and then will jump up and scamper like something has bit her on the bum. A few seconds later she will act like nothing happened.
-
Lol pebbles, that did occur to me!

Zoe will be 13 in April and has recently started peeing inside on occasion. She's done it a couple of times now, usually in the laundry which is where the dog door is so it seems her intention is to go outside. She otherwise seems well in herself but does have an 'off' day every couple of months. Not drinking excessively that I've noticed and still eating fine. I'm fairly sure it isn't Moose (his wees are smellier ). I'm taking her to the vet on Saturday to get checked but any ideas?
-
It doesn't sound like she'd care too much about breed standard to be honest. If any. I'm not a breeder but have discussed it with a few Chi breeders and from what I understand it can be very difficult due to their size and all of the ones I've spoken to will not breed from a Chi that's so small. It's too much of a risk. I feel sad for this poor pup.

Awww that's so awesome!! What a sweetie.

Do You Still Vaccinate An Old Dog?
moosepup replied to Mum to Emma's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Moose is 3 in a couple of weeks and hasn't been vac'd since his 15 month booster. Zoe is nearly 13 and probably hasn't been vac'd since she was 2 or 3. My vet still recommends annual vac but I choose not to. Will be getting them titre tested soon. -
So horty sent me a threatening PM and said i had to come in here.... ;) Nov & Dec are no good for me as we'll have relo's here from the US. Eat Greek sounds fabo though, will have to check it out! ETA - but thank you for the invite.
