A Follow On Thread For Those Who Now Have Their Puppy

Do you think he's starting to feel at home? -
Nacho's breeder said that her other pups have been around 600g at 12 weeks, Nacho is 3 times that at 11 weeks lol. His registered name is Aztecian Congo Savanne, he lives up to his King Kong nickname.
-
Yep, I think it's a good idea to take your pup for a 'non-scary' vet visit and for them to get a good once over to make sure they're all good. My breeder even recommended it. I also had them scan his chip to make sure it was working and they could record his number.
-
Just make sure that when you get him you take him to your own vet within a few days so they can give him a good once over. I took Nacho today and he got a clean bill of health. :) He's a huge Chihuahua though, 1.97kg. :D

She's super cute Jules, Cavs have such expressive little faces. Zoe is 14 now so she's not a spring chicken. Vet gave her a clean bill of health after her latest teeth scale and bloods so hoping for a few more years. Nacho has been so good today, very little crying in his pen, peeing on his puppy pad, sleeping in his crate. :) I got rid of his bed as he's just using his crate (which is what I want anyway), not sure why I thought he needed a bed. The plan is that he will sleep in my bed eventually (Moose does) but I don't want to push the Moose/Nacho friendship too soon. Plus he needs to be able to hold it through the night! -
Fostering A Relationship Between Puppy And Resident Dogs

Yep that's what the vet said to me this morning, it just takes time and be careful not to put human emotion into the situation 'ie. we like everything to be equal'. If you want harmony they need to sort their hierarchy out and you need to show him that M&Z were here first so they set the rules (after me of course). Zoe has done a bit of Nacho humping and puts him in his place so maybe that's why he's a bit more respectful of her. I just wish we could fast forward so all the hard work was over. :D -

Lol I'll be glad to see Moose follow Nacho one day, rather than the other way around. :) Sounds like it might take some time and I may need to leave him penned during the day once I go back to work (in 3 weeks). I didn't really pen Moose but I found it a lot easier to introduce him to one dog than it is to introduce Nacho to 2 dogs. Zoe despised Moose for the first week and then I think she just went 'meh ok this is how it is now, time to deal with it'. They're inseparable now which is why I wanted to get Nacho, I worry that when Zoe goes (hopefully not for a few years yet though!) he wouldn't cope on his own. -
Fostering A Relationship Between Puppy And Resident Dogs

Thanks Jules, will pop over and read your post. I'm keeping him separate most of the time but we periodically all go outside together and I let him run around on the grass with them. He's pretty good and amuses himself while out there and will just go up and give them the odd sniff or pounce. Zoe just stands there looking at him disdainfully  and Moose looks at him like this O_O. And then in the evening after dinner when he's a bit calmer I'll let him sit on the lounge with us and they'll all have a snooze. Moose and Zoe also get everything first, first food, first pats, first attention. Moose has stopped bristling so I'm quietly hopeful that that means progress. :) -
Sorry to hear about Miss Lhok. Puppies are definitely overwhelming. Moose was only a puppy 4 years ago but I'm still as confused as ever with Nacho, don't worry. Moose is definitely most closely bonded with me (he's my heart dog) but he loves my parents as well and sometimes prefers to snuggle up to my dad rather than me. You'll still bond if you're not with him all the time smash but you might bond at different levels. It's only natural. :)
-
This is our 3rd day and I know what you mean about the bonding. I think it's just the stress of no sleep and the crying (him not me, yet  ). Do you have adult dogs Lhok? Is he settling in with them?

Fostering A Relationship Between Puppy And Resident Dogs

Thanks pers, I think I have been doing that. By uninterrupted do you mean he should be in a totally separate room or is in his pen in the same room while they sit with me ok? He's noisy regardless. I have been making Moose my priority as Zoe doesn't seem too fazed, she snaps at him appropriately and he backs off. Moose will let him sniff his face and crawl over him but doesn't seem entirely comfortable if that makes sense. Is it ok to allow Nacho to do this? Thanks TSD, I'm hoping Moose has a light bulb moment lol -
Spoke to soon, he was horrible lol. He did sleep solidly from 2.30am to 7.30am though. Be prepared for some sleepless nights.
-
I don't wanna jinx it but 10 seconds of whining and then silence. I also covered the front of his crate with the jacket I've been wearing all day.

Lol please do!! I find this part the most stressful. -
At the moment the relationship consists mainly of avoidance and the hairy eyeball. There has been the odd snap too. I realise that it will take time but if anyone has any tips that have worked for them to help enable the relationships between your new puppy and your current dog/s I'd love to hear them. Even just some dos and don'ts. :)

Melina - if you're still planning on setting up the pen I wouldn't recommend making it as big as I had it, it's impractical. I reshaped it and its working heaps better being just 2 panels wide, 1 panel deep. I might use the spare panels to make a roof if his climbing skills get any better. Excuse the mess he's made with the puppy pads, they're just temporary until the pet loo arrives.
-
Honestly, I'm impressed with it already! He cracks it for awhile when I put him in the pen but he's settled right down now and has been for ages (in puppy time, half an hour is ages ). I haven't bothered with a heat pack (will tonight) so it's just got the heartbeat in it. It must be a great comfort. :)

An awesome name. :D When I first got his microchip papers in the mail they had spelt his name Mousse.
-
Willow is a gorgeous name. :) I still feel weird calling out Nacho but I think I had the same problem with Moose. You get used to it.
-
I just got my Snuggle Puppy in the post and he's already snuggling with it in his crate. Will be a good test to see if he settles quicker in the crate tonight. Sorry not the best photo, he's hard to photograph cos of his colour.

Not too bad thanks sujo. Moose has had a go at him a few times but of course can't expect them to be friends overnight. Struggling a little with the balance between letting them sort themselves out and when/how to step in but we'll get there. I'm glad Zoe is being good though, she just tells Nacho to bugger off if he gets in her face but she's pretty relaxed about the whole thing. Moose is more on edge. I've got 3 weeks at home to help get him settled so hopefully they will all come around!! Just got his Snuggle Puppy in the post and he's already lying with it so that's promising, maybe tonight in the crate will go a little smoother. -

Moose isn't quite onboard the puppy train yet but Zoe seems okay. I'm surprised because she has become quite curmudgeonly in her old age. Jules - did it take long for Joey and Renae to be accepting of Miah? -
If you have a strong pup you may want to put some towel wrapped bricks up against the panel that's against the wall just for sturdiness as they will jump up against the side and move it. Do not underestimate the strength of a small puppy.
-
If your yard is secure and danger free it should be fine. :) Nacho is a big Chihuahua but still a small (and curious!) pup and i have a decent aized yard so I wouldn't feel comfortable giving him free range for awhile,

Here's my set up, he's that black ball in the bed there lol.
