  1. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU ALL HEAR OF MANY CASES OF AUTOIMMUNE HEMOLYLETIC ANEMIA, ALSO CALLED IMMUNE MEDIATED ANEMIA, DOWN THERE? WHEN MY JUST TURNED 4 YEAR OLD GOLDEN RETRIEVER, HUNTER, AS DIAGNOSED WITH IT OCT. 9, 2003, I HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT. MY VET SAID HE ONLY SAW ONE CASE EVERY 1 TO 1 1/2 YEARS. MY RESEARCH SHOWED THAT 50% OF ALL DOGS DIE WITHIN A WEEK OF DIAGNOSIS, ANOTHER 30% WITHIN A MONTH. MY HUNTER DIED 8 DAYS AFTER DIAGNOSIS. WE KNOW IT WAS THE PROHEART6 THAT BROUGHT HIS ON, AND THRU FORUMS AND POSTS, I LOCATED/AND/OR WAS LOCATED BY ABOUT 45 OTHERS WHOSE DOGS DEVELOPED AIHA FOLLOWING PROHEART 6 INJECTION. ONLY 2 HAD SURVIVED. WELL, NOW MY VET IS SEEING SEVERAL CASES A YEAR. ON THE FORUMS I BELONG TO. WE KEEP GETTING MEMEBERS LOOKING FOR ANSWERS AS THEIR DOG HAS DEVELOPED THIS DISEASE, AND I EVEN BELONG TO ONE GROUP WHERE EVERY SINGLE MEMBER HAS EITHER LOST A DOG TO IT, HAS A DOG FIGHTING FOR IT'S LIFE AT THE MOMENT OR IS IN REMISSION. MOST OF US, MAYBE ALL OF US, FEEL OUR DOGS ARE GETTING TO MANY VACCINATIONS. THEY GET ONE THAT IS A COMBO OF ABOUT 4 OR 5 THINGS, THEN PARVO, LYME, LEPTO, RABIES. AND MONTHLY HEARTWORM PILLS, FLEA/TICK TOPICALS, ETC. HECK, THEY EVEN HAVE COME UP WITHA VACCINE TO PREVENT TARTAR ON THE DOGS' TEETH. I DO NOT THINK YOUR DOG GETS NEAR AS MANY VAX AS OURS DO--EXCEEPT SOMEOF US HAVE PUT A HALT TO IT--AND I WAS WONDERING IF AIHA IS AS BAD DOWN THERE AS IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS STARTING TO BE HERE. ALSO LOOKS LIKE THERE IS A LOT IN ENGLAND JUDGING BY THE BRITS ON THAT AIAHA FORUM.
  2. When I first heard of Revolution, I asked my vet about it....and he no longer carried it. Said to many of his clients dogs had come down with heartworms while on it. He could not say if it was faulty product or the people were just not applying it correctly. But a number of members on the golden retriever forums I belong to have posted their vet no longer carries it for the same reason Also, here in America, it is the #2 heartworm prevention in deaths and adverse reactions. Only Proheart6 topped it.Thiese things can be checked out at http://www.dogsadversereactions.com The lady that started this site started it after almost losing her pug to ProHeart6, and as time went on, other heartworm preventtives, NSAIDs, vaccines were added. She knows how to get stuff and here we have the Freedom of Information Act and we can get lots of goverment records.....providing it is like top secret stuff. She and a few others that lost dogs to ProHeart6 have had lots of contact with the FDA vets and have learn so much.
  3. My first thought was luxating patella. My golden retriever, KayCee had her right knee operated on at 16 months, then14 months later her other knee went bad and had to be operated on. She never had any more problems with in the remaining 6 years of her life. Lost her last My 25 to cancer. If it works will post a picture of her right after I got her home following 2ed surgery. I am wishing you the best for your girl.
  4. My golden retriever, Buck developed places like thatafter he got into my fenced flower garden and laid in Lantana. I had to get a special shampoo from my vet and also a cream. He was also given antibiotics because his were so nasty.
  5. I have read on other forums where for some reason raw did not agree with the posters dog. They ended up with dry or home cooked and the dog did well. Makes one wonder what the dog would eat if running wild? I think some vets think raw is great, some think it is okay, some are totally against it.
  6. You have to be really careful of not over doing the flea/tick stuff. After all, it is a pesticide that their body takes in. I don't know about down there, but here in the states, vets are seeing more and more cancer in dogs and also more and more autoimmune diseases--I lost my 4 yer old golden retriever to autoimmune hemolytc anemia and liver damage brought on by ProHeart6 back in 2003. At that time my vet was seeing a case every year to year and half. Now he sees several a year and he believes dogs are getting to many vaccinations, on top of heartworm prevention (that is a MUST year around here where we live on the Teaxs coast) and flea stuff. And then so many have allergies and get steroids for thgat, low thyroid, etc, just steady stream of drugs into their body. He has gone to 3 year vaccinations and avoiding some like Lyme and Lepto unless requestee by dog owner. There has been no cases of LYme down ere and only one case of Lepto. Also, many on the forums I belong to have started going 40 to 45 days between giving heatwrm prevention pills. From what I undestand, the pills only stay in their system about 24 hour. Each dose is more of a "deworming" than actual prevention. It kills all any that the dog picks up since last pill. An it takes 45 or more days before they are of a stage the Interceptor will not kill them. People are trying to cut back on drugs and this is one way they feel safe. I still givethe pill on the lst of each month--scared I would forget if it was on different days each month. PS I forgot to say that besides the recall of ProHeart6 after it killed so many dogs the 3 years it was out before, there are mnay that will not use it since it's return last summer because they do not want the drug in their dog's body for 6 months--or they say possibily 8 months. Folks are becoming more aware that we are "protecting" our dogs to death.
  7. I used Frontline Plus for years and was happy with it---til 2 years ago. I used Advanage and it worked for a short time. This past summer, none of the topicals worked and I saw more posts on different forums saying same thing. This past sumer I went with a chewable,Comfortis, which worked great for fleas. HGowever, if there is a problem with ticks, it does not work on ticks.
  8. I belong to 5 differnt golden retreiver forums here in the states and probably 75% of the goldies have had a hot spot at least once, most get them once or twice a year. My old golden only ever had one hot spot in his 12 yrs. One had a few when he was younger, and one got them twice a year. We knew she was allergic to live oak and pine pollen---2 pine trees in frony yard, live oaks all aouund us. She was also allergic to bermuda grass, mold spores and fleas. Ant of these could cause her to develope a hot spot. Other 2 goldens never got a single one. On all the golden forums, everyone keeps Gold Bond Powder in their dog's first aid kit. It is a must for hot spots. We do clip the hair back. Some clean with peroxide (my vets choice) some use tge amber color Listerine Mouth Ewash. Make sure it is dry before applyig any kind of powder. By the way, in case you do not have gold Bond Powder down trhere, it is used for athletes foot.
  9. Such a beautiful litttle girl. I certainly hope you can get a handle n her problems and get them cleared up.
  10. There were 600 deathgs and over 6000 adverse reactions reported to the FDA, which is why the FDA had them pull it. The FDA says only 10 to 15% of deaths, reactions are re4ported, so it was actually thousands that died, many thousdands that had reactions. And I know of a few how survied for a year or 2 and then died after it was off the market. When they were trying to get back on the market a few months after it was pulled, theynwere told at the hearing how they used the 12 month down there and it wa 3 times th strength of the 6 monthnused here (wonder whyn 3 tyimes stronger) and that they did not have reported deaths down there. Meanwhile, some from there are hitting forums here looking for iformation as to why their dog died after getting ph12. When asked if things were investigated the same there, they said yes. But we were hearing different from those coming here for answres. Here we report to the governmeny Food and Druf agency, they compile the reports and decide if a drug needs to be pulled. The Aussies were telling us that down there you report to the proper government ageccy, but they turn the case over to the manufacturer to investigate and rule if it was their own producy that caused the reaction. As one in Sydney who almost lost his "best mate" saids, they are not going to say their product is at fault and lose sales because it is dangerous.
  11. Just wondering if you have this food down there. It is a grainless that comes in 3 formulas. Honey is on the High Prairie one that is made of buffalo, deer, etc plus some fruits and berries. There is the Wetland formula which is duck, etc with the fruits and veggies. She does not like it as well. And the one I never tried is the fish one. She gets about 2/3 it and 1/3 home cooked or canned (or fresh) fish each day.
  12. WheBoots was less than a year old, our oldest son was dating a girl whosse Mom showed dogs. She put Boots thru the paces and said he was a natural in the ring with the way he held his head so high. that beautiful arched neck, and the strutand stride. But I said no. He was just my pal. I have goldens now, but I think the IriagSetters are the most elegant and regal of any breed. Oh, my first Irish Setter showed up in our yard back in '77, thin, lots of fleas some ticks, a gash in his hip, no tags or collar. He was so well mannered, new so many commands and words, so well behaved, loved everyone and everything including sons hamsters and gerbils that I knew he had been well loved, well cared for, well trained. I have no idea how he came to be out on the street. There was never an ad or fliers out. I just called him Red. He was red where Boots was mahognay. I had him 8 years til he developed a spinal infection that did not respond to any of the antobiotics my vet tried,. I fianally had to let him go which vshattered me. Today I think it was something more than spinal infection and wias I had had my present day vet back then----only thing, he was just a kid then.
  13. I do not lke Science Diet, but I know it has a purpose and is often what works when other foods will not. When my golden retriever, KayCee had surgery for luxating patella at 16 months, then 14 months later, same surgery, only with minor ACL repair, she turned into a litle tubby chubby. Al those months og bad knees, surgeries, recovery. I had no luck getting the weight off her and it was important that I do so. Finally my vet said to try her on the Sceince Diet r/d. Well, that did the trick. She went from her tubby chubby 85 oiunds to her perfect 67 pounds. I got her back on regular food, and gor the rest of her life, she did not put the weight back on. then my elderly male golden got a kidney infection just before turning 11. It was the only aiment he ever had in his life---except for a rattle snake bite to his face, and allergic reaction to a ground wasp sting. Besides the infection, he wad "trash in his urine." Hewas put on the Science Diet k/d for 3 months, antibiotics for 3 weeks. He did not like the the k/d and lost 3pounds while on it. But it did the trick and he never had another kidney problem.I wish I could mafe auggestion for you, but I have none so I can only wish luck to the dog.
  14. On several of the forums I belong to here in America, dogs with this problem is often helped by giving them a spoon of plain yogurt---organic if it can be found---each day. Also, a spoon of plain canned pumpkin. Not the one that has spices already added. just the plain , every day.
  15. I learned a couple of years ago that chest xrays taken early can be very important to your dog. I decided to have a chest x-ray taken of my golden retriever a couple of years ago when I had her geriatric physical done. No real reason a her full blood panel was great, her heart and lungs sounded perfect. But the x-ray showed an enlarged heart chamber. In fact it was so enlarged her esophagus actually "humped" oner it rather than going straight down. My vet was totally surprised that she had this condition as there was no sign of it. He put her on a very low dose blood pressure med each day----same one hubby takes, only 1/4 of the dose of hubby's....and a baby asprin every other day. I had thought she had a lot of energy for a 7 year old who had had both knees operated on, but after a couple of weeks on the BP tab and asprin, she had even more energy. it is really a good idea to get chest x-rays taken at an early age to find something like this. Knowinf there is a problem with heart or lungs can determine what is used and how muvh is used when the dog needs to be put under for surgery, dental, etc. I also went ahead and had 5 year vold Honet'sa chest x-rayed and hers is perfect.
  16. I just joined a couple of days ago and am trying to read some post to learn a little abut the dogs and folks here. I am totally shocked at what happeed to you beautiful boy. I must say, you handled it better than I would have. I would have been in a state of rage had that happened to one of my goldens---or any breed of dog I owned. It is bad enough it happened, but to not tell you and start treatment at once is inexcusable. I hope he recoveres 100% and gets back into the ring.
  17. Just wondering how many of you have dogs that LOVE fruits and veggies? I had an Irish Setter, Boots, that seemed tp prefer them to meat. He would eat all the tomatoes, yellow squash, and green peppers right off the vines in my garden. When he would see me cutting a watermelon or cataloup he would just be dancing around drooling. We always had a house full of ou boys griends over. Always seemed to have at least 2 or 3 "spare kids" for supper every night. One night there were 4 extra teens there and Ihad made spaghetti with meat sauce----lots of meat for those boys--, green beans, garlic bread, and garden salad of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded carrots and purple cabage. Had just put it all on table and 17 year old soon took garbage out, came running back in and said there was a HUGE rat at the trash can. We all dashed out to see it. It was gone and I suspect it was a possem, not a rat. went back in and Boots was up at the table eating-----not spaghetti/meat sauce, not bread, but the garden salad! Those boys almost rolled in the floor at a dog eating salad instead of meat or bread. AQbout 3 months after he turned 12, Boots was diagnosed a very, very agressive bone cancer in his left rear leg at the knee. He was limping on Friday and I thought it was his arthritis. By Monday when we got him to the vet he was dragging his leg. Once test, x-rays were done and diagnosis made, we had to decide what to do. AMPUTATE THAT DAYm give him a few days and then let him go because in a week he most likely would not be eating nor able to get up. ...or do nothing, just let him go when it happened. Thay was out of the question. I would not let him suffer for days. Our hearts said AMPUTATE. But our common sense said he had already passed his 12th birthday, he had arthritis in his shoulders and hips. As much as it hurt, we decided to give him a couple of special days then send him to the bridge. Well, those few days tyrned into exactly 10 weeks. I took him fishing every day and he would get after crabs in shallow water, swim, try to catch shore birds. He developed a "bummy hop" and did not drag that leg. Since we knew he was terminal and it made no difference, we let him eat every thing he loved, even some chocolate. What we had for dessert, so did he.....strawberry shortcake with whipped cream, apple pie with ice cream, banana split, chocolate cake, cookies, dish of ice cream. He had all the melon, fruit, veggies, garden salad he wanted every day. I took him in twice a week and he would be weighed--he gained, not lost. Mt vet could not understand how Boots was doig so well, why he had not gone down hill. But iit could not last forever. on July 8, 1997 we went fishing as always and he was less active. The next day he3 fell trying to get onto the sofa and I found the fardness in his right shoulder and knrew it was there. I gave him a big dish of his favotite ice cream, buttered pecan, and let my vet send him to the bridge that day. I could have hung onto him a few more days, but this way he was able to enjoy life to the end. How he had enjoyed vthose 10 weeks of all the fruits and veggies and sweet stuff he so loved This is a picutre taken of Sir Lancelots Irish Pride, simply called Boots because of the huge feet he had when I got him as a 9 week oldpuppy. He was about 4 when this nwas taken. He had found tha he could get into the chair, turn around and sit on the table and see what I was working on on the kitchen counter top. HGe knew he was not suppose to do this and when I would start toward him, he would get down. But my son managed to get this snap of him one day. I just love it...
  18. My old golden developed arthritis in his sine from mid back on down to tail and in his hips. I had him on Osteo Biflex, fish oil, Ester C and Vitamin E. When Ilearned about Knox Nutra Joiint, I started him on 1/2 scoop each day. Callie said itv would take about 3 months to see any difference, but he had only been on it about 2 /2 months when he stretched his rear legs out behind him for the vfirst time in many many months, He was really improving when I lost him to heart attack May 15, 2007. After seeint the improvement in Buck, I started KayCee on it at age 7 1/2. She had had swurgery for luxating bpatella at age 16 months, then 14 months katerm same surgery on other vknee.....only this time she aqlso required a little repair to the vACL. I started her on joit sups back then, but we still expected tp see srthritis by age 5 or 6. When I mlost her to cancer this past May, she had no signs of arthritis and she was 8 yrs, 9 mons and 1 week old. yes, it is important to keep you dog as thin as is heathly possible
  19. iT SEEMS THAT COCKER SPANIELS ARE ONE OF THE BREEDS THAT SEEM TO GET HIT WITH AIHA SO VERY OFTEN, AND FOR SOME REASON, THE BUFF, OR BLOND ONES ARE LESS LIKELY TO SURVIVE THAN SAY, A BLACK OR PARTI-COLORED. ABOUT A TEAR AGO A LADY ON ONE OF THE ALL BREED FORUMS I BELONG TO----IN FACT IT WAS THE VERY FIRST ONE I TOLD HUNTER'S STORY ON--ANNOUNCED HER BUFF COCKER HAD JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AIHA. HE CRASHED SEVERAL TIMES, BUT IS DOING ORETTY WELL NOW. HOWEVER, CALLIE WILL NOT LET HIM GET ANY TYPE OF VAX AND SHE USES AS MUCH HOLISTIC HERBS/ MEDS AS SHE CAN. IN THE PASST WEEK OR SO, 3 OR 4 MORE HAVE COME ONTO FORUM LOOKING FOR ANSWERS, HELP FOR THEIR AIHA DOG, OR TO TELL THEIR DOG HAD DIED FROM THAT DISEASE. AND I JOINED A GROUP THAT IS TOTALLY MADE UP OF ONES WHOSE DOG IS FIGHTING FOR IT'S LIFE, IS IN REMISSION, OR HAS DIED. IT IS HEART BREAKING TO GO THERE AND FIND ONE OR TWO THAT HAD BEEN FIGHTING LOST IT'S BATTLE, OR ONE THAT WAS IN REMISSION HAD A RELAPSE. THEN OF COURSE, THERE ARE HAPPY STPRIES WHERE ONE HAS GONE INTO REMISSION, OR HIS HCT HAS IMPROVED A LOT, ETC. IT IS A HORRIBLE DISEASE THAT CAN WEAR A PERSON DOWN WITH WORRY AND ALSO EMOTY THE BANK ACCOUBT IN A HURRY. YES, PROVING THAT A VAX CAUSED A DOG'S DEATH IS HARD TO DO UNLESS IT GOES INTO SHOCK OR SEIZURE WITHIN MI NUTES. AS I SAIOD, SO MANY OF US ARE STILL IN CONTACT EVEN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. ONE THING WE ALL HAD IN COMMON,-----WE ALL FELT A TERRIBLE GUILT. WE FELT WE HAD KILLED OUR BELOVED DOG, OR IN SOME CASES, DOGS. I LOST 40 POUNDS IN 8 MONTHS BECAUSE OF MY GUILT. I WILL HAVE TO TELL THE STORY OF HOW I CAME OUT OF IT. MOST DID NOT HAVE NECROPSY DONE AND THE MAKER TOLD THEM THERE WAS NO WAY TO PROVE PH6 CAUSED THEIR DOGS DEASTH BECAUSE THERE HAD BEEN NO NECROPSY. SOME OF US DID HAVE IT DONE----AND WERE TOLD THERE WAS NO PROOF IT CAUSED OUR DOGS DEATH. IT WAS A WINLESS SITUATION. THERE WERE A FEW THAT CAME ONTO I-DOG, ETC TALKING ABOUT HOW THEY WERE GOING TO FIGHT FORT DODGE, AND SUDDENLY NO MORE POSTS AND WE KNEW THEY HAD TAKEN PAYMENT AND SIGNED THE "ZIP YOUR LIP RELEASE" i NOTIFIED THEM AFTER HUNTER'S DEATH AND THEY DID NOT REPLY hOWEVER THEY CONTACTED MY VET AND WANTED HUNTER'S COMPLETE MEDICAL RECORDS. mY VET WOULD NOT GIVE THEM WITHOUT MY OKAY, WHICH i GAVE. tHY WOULD SEE THAT HE HAD NEVER BEEN SICK A DAY IN HIS LIFE TIL THIS HAPPENED FOLLOWING PROHEART6 INJECTION. AS I FOUND MORE AND MORES TORIES, i WROTE THEM EVERY 10 DAYS OR SO, BUT NO REPLY. hE DIED oCT. 16, 2003. fINALLY FOR SOME REASON, IN jAN OR fEB i SENT THEM A COPY OF HIS $2300 BILL. A SHORT TIME LATER I GOT A CALL FROM MY VET. THEY HAD SENT HIM A COPY OF LETTER TO ME SAYING THEY WOULD PAY THE DIAGNOSTIC PART OF THE BILL, ---JUST ASBOUT HALF OF IT. BUT I HAD TO SIGN THE RELEASE. THEY WANED HIS OPINION IF THEY SHOULD SEND THE LETTER TO ME OR NOT. HE DID NOT THINK IT WAS QUITE RIGHT AND HE HAD ME COME AND PICK UP THE LETTER. WHEN I GOT HOME AND READ IT I WAS FURIOUS. THEY WERE TRYING TO SHUT ME UP, PREVENT ME FROM WARNING OTHERS. THE RELEASE SAYS THAT I WOULD NEEVR REVEAL OR DISCUSS ANY INFORMTION, DATA, DISCOVERY, ASPECT OF THE RELEASE, ETC, I RAN OFF SOME COIES. TOOK IT BACK TO MY VET AND TOLD HIM TO RETURN IT AND TELL THEM THEY COULD PUT IT WHERE THE SUN DID NOT SHINEW. IF MY WARNINGS COULD SAVE ONE DOG.....WELL. THEN ABOUT A MONTH LATER I LEARNED THAT BATCHES OF PROHEART6 THAT HIT THE MARKET STARTING IN JULY WEWRE BEING RECALLED BECAUSE VTHE TIME RELESE THINGS WERE NOT WORKING PROPERLY. WE WERE NEVER ABLE TO FIND OUT THE EXACT PROBLEM---NOT RELEASING AT ALL, ALL RELEASING AT ONCE, RELEASING AT THE WRONG TIMEW. AND I LEARNED A WARNING LETTER HAND DELIVERED TO FORT DODGE. THEY WERE WARNED WORKERS NOT WEARING PROPER ATTIRE TO NPREVENT CONTAMINATION OF ANIMAL MEDS, OF UTENSILS USED ON A CONTAMINATED BATCH NOT BEING STERILIZED, BUT USED ON ANOTHER BATCH, ETC ETC. AND IT MENTIONED ABOUT ANOTHER WARNING LETTER ABOUT ETOGESIC PILLS BEING SUBSTANDARD. THAT RAG A BELL, SURE ENOUGH, KAYCEE HAD BEEN ON THAT NSAID AFTER HER KNEE SURGERY, I STILL HAD THE BOTTLE, ANDS IT WAS DATED SHORTLY BEFORE THE RECALL. I WROTE THEM THAT I KNEW ABVOUT THE PROHESRT6 RECALL OF BATCHES THAT VWENT ON THE MARKET BEFORE HUNTER GOT HIS FATAL DOSE, ABOUT THE ETGESIC RECALL--AND I STILL HAD THE BOTTLE, HOW DID I KNOW MY PRECIOUS DOGS HAD NOT GOTTEN BAD DRUGS, AND GRACIOUS ME, NEXT THING I KNOW, THEY ARE PAYING JUST ABOUT HALF THE BILL PLUS MAKINF A DONATION TO NTEXAS A&M VETR SCHOOL IN HIS MEMORY. I GOT A LETTER FROM A&M SAYING THEY HAD RECIECED A GENEROUS DONATION IN HUNTER'S MEMORY----AND I NEVER SIGNED A RELEASE. DID ALL MY TELLING HIS STORY ON DOZENS OF FORUMS SAVE ANY LIVES? i HAVE NO IDEA, BUT SOME HAVE SAIS I MAY HAVER SAVED THE LIFE OF THEI DOG. I HOP SO.
  20. Yep, English is my first an only language. Except I do talk "Texas English". I was actually born down in Perth----well Mt. Lawly, at St. Annes Hospital back in '45. Mom was Perth girl, (Bassendean) Dad a Texas farm boy in the Navy stationed there all during WWII. But Mom and I joined Daddy here in the states in '46, so I learned to talk here. No, my probems are mostly medical. I have rheumatoid athritis and my fingers do not work the best and many times I do not hit he keys hard enough for them them to print, or the space bar hard enough to put a spae between words This key board is onlyu 6 onths old, but my son says he thinks some of the keys hang a little. And on top of that, I have vision problems caused by diabetes. I am legally blind inmy left eye. I have had lazer surgery and also injuections rght into the eyeball and that has helped some. I can not read the newspaper nor magazines without a magnifying glass and ee use one to read the computer screen if the letters are not big and in bod. Oh, to make thing evn worse, I have cataracts which the doctor will not remove until te swelling and leakage fromn the diabetes prolem is cleared up. I have to have my face right on the screen to read smal print, such as this, and I have a hrd time trying to make corrctions with my face o the screen. When my friends and famiy send me e-mails, they enlarge the letters, use large letter and do it in bold and I can sit back from the screen to read. Believe me, is a pain in the keester not being able to read without my face right on whatever I am trying to read.! My eye doctor is hoping my vision will improve with this injections n my eyeball. I sure hope so also.
  21. Late in July I was rubbing Honey's tummy and chest (golden retriever mix) and I found a lump on her chest, right where her ribs join. It was about the size of an American quarter and even flat. It almost felt like a coin under her skin. I took h right in and my vet did a needle biopsy. He was like 85% sure it was only a fatty tumor, but could not be 100% sure, and since just 2 months before I had lost my full golden to cancer (a soft ball saize tumor in her intestines), I was in a near panic and he felt to be on the safe side, it should be removed when she had her scheduled dental in 2 weeks. I always stay at the hospital for anmy procedure with my dogs. When Honey was done, the tech came out and got me and told me to come and sit with Honey in recovery, and she warned me that Honey was having hallucinations. I got back there and Honey was on a thick comforter on the floor and she was workng her legs trying to get up and was crying the most pitiful sounds. Her head was swinging around, her eys were huge. She was seeing something that was not there and was scared so bad. I sat on the floor and held her head for about 30 mintes til the gas totally wore off and she stopped having hallucatins She was so terrified of what she saw and I was scaredshe would rip the stitches out with her back feet trying to get up. I was told is is really common--but I had never seen it with any of my dogs before. And I learned from techs on other foum that this is comon, but owners raely know this has happned or is going on with their dogs. Have any of you ever encouteed this situaon? One thing for sure, if your dog requires a procedure that requires it to be put under, try to have any other procedures lie dentals done at that tiime. The fewer times he/she is put under, the better.
  22. When my elderly golden retriever had a dental, one tooth removed and a small tumor removed from his gum, I soaked his kibble in warm water til it was very soft and put it and some canned into my blender and pureeded i. He got nothing hard. Bless his old heart, he always got 2 treats on his pillow every night and he had to go without them for about 10 days, which upset him.
  23. hello goldens you will find that people in Australia are more keen on raw food rather than cooked I lived in US for almost 6 years and I know people there are very scared of feeding raw. I personally don't give my dogs anything cooked and definitely not meat or bones . Raw feeding is pretty popular here and on all forums there are always pros and cons. I suppose because I can't eat meat if i is slightly pink, i have a hard time thinking about my dogs eating it. I did try about a year go, but neither KayCee (who died in May of cancer nor Honey would eat the raw chicken hearts nor the raw gound beef. I wanted to try the aw chicken wigs to clean teeth, but could not bring myself to do so---I saw a lab pup at my vets that had a bone spinter, pierce his stomache and peritonitis had set in. When I saw him he had a temp of 107 and wa lmt omatos. Hedid late tat dy my vet tod me. Gee, I am such a big chicken and a worry wart when it comes to feeding dogs.
  24. I have never given my dogs raw bones of any kind. However, many years ago everyone gave their dogs cooked bones. I would never do that today except! I make a chicken stew for Honey--started it several years ago when I had 3 dogs. I take 5 pounds of chicken thighs, about 3 pounds of chicken necks, about 1 o 1 1/2 pounds of beef liver or chicken gizzards, cut up, 2 chpped up appls, a couple of chopped up sweet potatoes, a 1 pound bag of frozen green beans and sometimes some sliced yellow or green squash. Put it al in crock po (slo cooker), cover with water, bring to boil, turn heat down and cook 24 hours....covered The chicken neck bones go totaly mush, and the ends of the thigh bones, and in some cases, the entire thigh bone, just crumbs. She gets about 2/3 cup each night with her 2/3 cup of kibble. I keep out enough for like 5 days and freeze the rest in bags to go 3 days.
  25. It appears you do not have near the vax there as here. The Lyme disease is caused by ticks, and even tho we have ticks in this area, they are not the ones tat carry that disease. nd they get Lepto from drinking water that infected animals have been in. My vet has only had one case and does not know of any others being reported. So my girl dos no geteiheroths.
