OK, but where does one find a really wealthy guy, so we can have more time with our dogs. Only ones I ever use to find were the poor ones, now I figure I get more time with my dogs without one around anyway.

It was my understanding that they stopped trying to develop this as a breed because of temperment issues. I followed these dogs on the internet for a while but they suddenly dropped of the radar and this was the only info left that I could get on them. At the time looking at the pictures of those on the internet there was no consistancy of type and you could easily pick out the other breeds used to get the small size. The original dog was a very small Siber if I remember correctly and because the owners got so many comments and interest from others on the little dog with the lovely Sibe markings they decided to aim for the same. Probabaly knew nothing about genetics and that the original dog was probabaly the runt but would probabaly still throw larger pups so added things like Chihuahua's and Papillons to the mix amounst other breeds. Just another designer breed with a catchy name Alaskan Klee Kai to make a quick buck out of a mongrel.

They do shed but nothing compared with some other breeds and they are not nearly as fragile as some people think and are quiet bright little dogs that learn quickly. I had Chihuahuas with two small children from the time the kids were 2 and 4 and never had any issues. If you have young children it is best to have some rules in place regarding small dogs, ie that they are not allowed to pick the dog up and can only have the dog on their lap if they are sitting on the ground, might also have to have a few extra ones when dealing with a blind dog. I have a friend with a blind dog who has been blind all of his life and he copes very well. He is about 2 now and although she has several dogs he is her special boy and has a wonderful personality although he does only live with adults and is shy of strangers. Being blind has never stopped him getting into doggy mischief either. One thing that you may find is that the dog barks more than usual, partially because they can't see what is making the noise they hear but also because some blind dogs use the barking abit like echo location in dolphins to suss out their surroundings. There are several books available on living with blind dogs and I am sure there would be info on the internet too which would be worth reading through before you make a decision. Dogs also have an advantage over blind humans in that they have their strong sense of smell and also their whiskers to aid them in getting around. Adjustments to a new household may take a little longer than a sighted dog and I would let it get use to the smell of other pets before gently introducing them once the dog has settled in abit so that it is less threatening.

Looks like he's getting the idea, he's a lovely boy and very clever. Have to agree with Aussielover, he does have the best puppydog eyes.

Three Years Ago Now Kuga, A Very Special Old Man
ozjen replied to hortfurball's topic in Rainbow Bridge
Hortfurbal, I'm so sorry to hear of Kuga's passing, your tribute to him was beautiful and what an outstanding age to reach for such a big fellow especially given his heart condition, I'm sure its a testement to the love and care he got from you. Two lifetimes with you instead of one must also make it even harder to say goodbye but he was lucky to have un unselfish owner who would give him his wings when it was time. I'm sure he will be waiting to meet up with you again one day until then hugs to you and I hope your wonderful memories of him help ease the pain. RIP beautiful boy. -
Practice getting him to do things off his own back to get the click and reward to teach him how the clicker works and then station clickers and rewards around the house to capture any behaviour that can be used as a trick (pointing). If your not sure how to do this give the dog an object to interact with and then C/R the dogs interaction with it, from a nose touch, putting a foot on it, feet on it, anything but after a couple of goes at one thing the dog has to offer something different to get a C/R or if your dog knows several tricks or commands already let it offer you options without giving a command to get a C/R. You will be amazed at how easy it is if the dog knows how to play the C/T game, I wanted my dog to wipe her feet so when she wiped her feet after toileting I C/T she looked at me wiped her feet again to check that was what had got the C/T and when she got another C/T her face lit up and she kept wiping her feet for more C/T then it was just a matter of adding a command to get it on cue. Yes, it was that easy. A pup I have had a habit of lifting his backleg ( and cocking his leg from 11 wks )so I C/R that and he was doing it as a trick in no time.(lifting not peeing )

Shaping A Dog To Walk Backwards
ozjen replied to leopuppy04's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I know my dogs will often backup of their own accord if they are waiting for a ball to be thrown or trying to get my attention etc, if yours do this you could capture and click the behaviour. This was how my pup learnt to backup, so much easier than when I was teaching Jenna and was just learning the benefits of clicker training. -
You want these dogs http://www.youtube.com/user/rogersmmr

Well not difficult tricks but if you have wave then you probabaly have the makings of many more tricks, hi 5, cross your paws, turn the light on (depending on your light switches), which paw (holding something hidden in one hand and present both closed fists to the dog to choose), targeting with paw, who do you love?(dog raises paw and places it on owner), limp, high march, stinky dog/shy (paw over nose). I always like to teach targeting with nose and paw as once you have that you have so many tricks already halfway learnt. Impressive trick that looks hard but are really simple to teach are blow bubbles in your water bowl, yes, no, slamdunk (also can be used for put your toys away or pick up the beer cans after a party)and quoits. Check out youtube for ideas, I always find new ideas there and also post my dogs there too on OZPAWFX. Any training you do with your dog is useful as it helps build the bond and the more you exercise your dogs brain the easier it is to train plus your dog is less likely to find mischief to stimulate it. Have fun, you are only limited by your imagination, our dogs are smart cookies. The way a trick is presented can make it more interesting too so if you use sutile hand signals as well as commmands it can be handy. ie instead of just telling the dog to say yes or no, ask it a question and then give a sutile hand signal so it appears to be answering.

Regardless of whether a dog is DA or not it would be nice if people would control their dogs from rushing up to other dogs and getting in their face, lets face it how defensive would we be if a complete stranger rushed up into our personal space. I feel for you and your dog and am so sorry that what should be an enjoyable outing for you both is spoilt by others being thoughtless.

Hi Mystiqview, I'm in WA, don't know why Queensland comes up in my profile. While it is a requriement here to register all pups now there is no rule with regard to us having to supply papers to new owners. As stated in my earlier post I am not comfortable with an 8wk old pup being sterilized and while I understand why some breeders do I would rather try other options. Its been 4 years since I last bred a litter and the main reason is seeing this other breeder get burnt. Would be nice if we could just put in an order to our bitches for just one or two quality pups of whatever sex we required so that no pups had to be sold on. I personally do not desex my puppies at 8 weeks. I realise there is only so much we can do to screen puppy buyers. To date I have not had that issue. Although I recently found out a BYB breeder was telling their puppy buyers that my big red boy was the sire of one of their litters. Would love to know how... when he is locked up here when I am not home. Miraculous conception?? Unfortunately there is nothing to stop the unscrupulous people from doing their dodgy antics. I know of some people who have copied pedigree certificates from those who have websites showing an individual dog's pedigree certificate and using that to say the dog is pedigree. It is amazing what you can do with photoshop. Yes, its hard to know what the answer is. I bet you were not impressed to find out about that BYB misrepresenting your dog. I think I would have been out for blood if it had been me. I hate that the genuine people often suffer because of the dishonest few and yes Rubystar it does make it alot harder for those wanting to get something on mains. Even breeders come up against issues though,ie some stud dog owners will limit how many pups can be mains registered in a litter which may be fine in most cases but I have also seen litters where the whole litter where worthy of running on (unfortunately not mine ). Now breeders have their reasons for doing this but from the bitch owners perspective they are not out to breed just pets which is what most of the litter essessially becomes before it is even born with this limitation. Ok no pup in a litter may be worthy of main registering but to have it decided on how many can before they are born would be frustrating too if it was a really good litter. There are alot of pros and cons to every breeders decision depending on who's point of veiw you look at it from but ultimately they are just trying to protect their chosen breed any way they can. Will it help, who knows, will it be detremental to the breed who knows, probabaly a little of both, I often wonder myself but as yet there is no ideal answer.

Which Option For Importing Would You Choose
ozjen replied to heroeswit's topic in Breeders Community
While I will never be likely to be in the position of importing a dog if I was I would go for a young proven adult and would consider something abit older (maybe 3+) so that I could see what it produced especially if I was hoping for it to be a big influence on my breeding. Also by the time the dog has matured you will be aware of most faults as well as good points and know wether it is a worthwhile breeding prospect. Why pay all that money to have a young promising pup or imature dog not turn out a good adult or have a dog you can't breed on from or can't produce anything worthwhile. I know it only provides 50% of the equation but does it show a strong influence on any pups produced. There are enough variables involved without weighing the odds against yourself. -
Happy Birthday RalleyValley, hope you have a terrrific day and get lots of Toby kisses.

But poor Brookie had an Aussie girl in the next ring at one stage and you know he looovvves Aussie girls, so he probabaly started to daydream about romantic, lustful get togethers. We all know where males keep their brains. ;)

ME,ME,ME,ME,ME,ME!!!!!!!! ........but can I have them without the Toller scream.

It was late when I posted, I forgot about this bit. I agree with the above posts. Perhaps they are withholding papers because they don't want them used to fool people later. I personally am considering with holding papers if I breed again until confirmation that the pup is spayed/neutered ( I give owner 6 months from purchase to do this to allow pup to mature abit). I would prefer limited papers to be clealy marked in big letters "NOT TO BE BRED FROM" and then I might feel a little more comfortable about giving them out. I have seen a dog sold on a spay/neuter contract(not one of mine) bred and the pups then sold in a pet shop and the bitches limit papers shown saying "Oh yes mum is a reg ped look here are her papers you can veiw her Champion relies online." All wrong on so many levels but when something goes wrong with that pup all people will remember is "Oh I got a dog from such and such lines and it turned out to be a dud" not "I got a pup from a bitch sold on a spay/neuter contract for a reason and it was bred indiscrimnaitly to possiably another breed, no health testing etc and the breeder (of the petshop pups) didn't care where the pups went as long as they got their money". While everyone might say then that the reg. breeder wasn't careful enough in picking their new owners, none of us can say with 100% sureity that we can see through all other peoples lies and deception and we don't all feel comfortable about spaying/neutering very young pups although I can understand why breeders resort to this. I also know how upset this breeder was about this happening, I know how upset by it I was too on having to advise her on what had happened. There is a fine line between breeders going overboard with their terms and conditions for potential new owners and those just trying to protect their breed it is not always easy to find the happy medium or for potential puppy owners to understand. ETA: Breeders are not necessarily businesspeople so may not always be efficient in responding to emails or getting back to possiable prospective buyers, given the amount of time wasters they may also get enquiries from. If they were bussiness peope then they would want a more profitable bussiness, dog breeding rarely if ever is. While they do sell pups to the general public it is more about rehoming those pups that don't meet their own needs not about filling a niche in the market.

Or rosettes. Have seen ones of dogs dyed in colours and dogs dyed to look like Pandas but imagine how long it must take them to do dots, stripes and rossettes. Well I guess its one way to sell puppies. ETA: OK that image doesn't want to work so here's the site http://www.flickriver.com/photos/cary_miller/9315468/

If stripes are prefered
-
Years ago I had a customer develop a photo with me that had a small perfectly striped puppy that she had come across in China and she was good enough to give me a copy of the photo as I was curious about it. Being so young I thought that it couldn't have been dyed and be so perfectly marked and was begining to think that perhaps there was some unknown gene out there. Well, just happened to come across something today that got me thinking about it and below are a few sampes of what I found, Still don't know how they managed it with a young pup or why but did come across other youngsters done too, seems to be a common practice in some Asian countries. Some people need to get a life I think and leave their poor dogs alone. ETA sorry doubled up on picture more pics to follow

Glad that the powers that be had the sense not to give the dog a death sentance. Another medical issue caused by people drinking too much, wonder if they will add this one to the adds on drinking.

Just a reminder to all that even though these images touch our hearts and being Aussies we are quick to donate, please remember that there are also alot of scams out there that can lift these images of the net and claim to be a charity helping. Not saying that the ones mentioned here are, only reminding people not to donate blindly in their desire to help as unfortunately there are scumbags that prey on just these type of events and peoples charitable nature. Has anyone heard any further news on how the injured dog in the video got on at the vet?

W.A. Butchers at Canning Vale Markets sell pig heads, 2 for $10 also quite a variety of meats including cheap hamburgur mince. Some of the more unusual items like chicken feet I thought rather pricey at $6.99 kg, but then I thing they have a large asian clienele. IGA Huntingdale sell pet mince for $2.99 kg (think it is a combo of beef, lamb, prok etc) Both open 7 day a week.

I use to give my Australian Shepherd pups chicken wings and necks but found that it was safer to separate the pups first as otherwise some would just inhale the whole thing rather than risk a litter mate getting them.
