YES! IT IS WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS IT MAKES MY HEART ACHE.

What day are you on valley CBR?
-
Yep, but you can have a mongrel with good teeth, coat and gait or a dog that looks nothing like its meant to for that breed but still with all of those things mentioned which was what I was trying to infer, just don't explain myself very well. How well a dog conforms to the breed standard is what they are judged on and while it does include these things they are only a part of the whole thing, a judge has to take into account so much more. Just as well a nice sit isn't part of it or Jen would never be an Aust CH. Mind you I am sure the newspaper people probabaly mucked up the story as they always put their own slant on things and something gets lost in the translation.

Uuughh! well aside from the fact that canine members are not permitted to sell to pet shops I know my dog has never been judged on how it sits in the conformation ring and it wouldn't matter how good its teeth, coat or gait was if it didn't first of all meet the breed standard. Perhaps she has been misquoted and got her love of the breed from a pet shop pup but then went on to getting registered pedigrees and showing.

Know the feeling well and how scarey it is, I had bad dreams for weeks of them comming into the house. As to covering the ground fast, those Dugites can fairly move too. Mind you when they endanger family members of both the 2 and 4 legged kind its surprising how brave one gets.

Hi Kiwioz sorry about the late response haven't been on the computer much. I hope you didn't substain too much damage I have heard from friends that they are still getting lots of aftershocks so no one is getting alot of sleep and the animals are very unsettled. I hope all the pets that have run off find their way safely home and everyone over there stays safe.

Woohoo!!!!! Well done

It's in the 'News' section, not in general dog discussion. Not everything on this forum is related to dogs. Plus plenty of NZ dog owners out there who will have been affected by this. All to often the effect on people with pets is forgotten when they are made homeless from natural disasters, tempory accomadation and evacuation centres do not usually allow for pets, putting many owners under extra stress regarding the welfare of their pets. So while it may not seem dog related when you look at the bigger picture it is.

Just heard about the massive earthquake in New Zealand, hope everyone across there is okay, we are thinking of you all. Aside from the aftershocks, they are apparently expecting a big storm too with high winds, hope they are wrong as NZ doesn't need anything more to cope with right now. Looters are aready in action too, I think they should be shot, how horriable can one be in such a situation than to steal from others that are already hurting.

So sorry to hear about Lilly, valley CBR, sending you and your family cyber hugs at this difficult time . Fly high with your angel wings Lilly, old girl. Hope Lincon does you proud at the Royal, Valley CBR.

I dare say that was a left over from the Nationals, not as many little dogs turned up as they hoped and they were handing out the food as prizes at later trials. Squeeeee adorable!! Man I wish I saw the runs of the other two dogs who Q'd, they must have been sooooooooooo sloooooooowww if our two slow poke runs beat them Seemed like a generous SCT though. I reckon if our two beat them then they must have walked the course :D . Jenna only beat Kyzer because she has longer legs.

Congratulations Wazzat Xolo, they are certainly making their mark in the ring, hope you have fun celebrating.

Our doggies know when we need a little extra TLC, that is one of the special things I love about them. Gizmo gave me a scare a couple of weeks ago and while I was trying to get up the courage to take him to the vet I thought I would take some last pictures. He continued to be less than interested until I picked up a toy, his face lit up and he found his bounce again. After that he ate some hand fed chicken meat, the first food for a couple of days which is unuasual for Giz who loves his food. Has been his perky self ever since although I know that can't go on forever so am just enjoying what ever time we have. Valley CBR, I'm so sorry about Lilly and the decision that is looming for you, but glad you have the strength to make the right decision for her. Feel free to talk about it here as much as you like, we have all been there at some stage and would like to be able to offer whatever support we can. Sending hugs yours and Lillly's way and hope the rest of the family is coping too.

Me tooooooooo!!! Me three ;) :D ;) ;) A lovely quiet night last night.

Hope you will visit us DOLer's from group 5, might not recognize Jenna all spruced up :D and you can get Lapphund cuddles. I think Rubystar, Bdazzelled and Plotomey might be doing obedience that day too.

Awe, so sorry to hear about Lilly, Valley CBR, sending you and her hugs and hope the antinflammatories help with the pain.

Great shots, ValleyCBR. Strauss is a beautiful boy, with a fantastic temperment, the stay in quarantine has not seemed to have any negative effect on him at all and he is already showing what a clever lad he is. Plotomey, you are going to have so much fun with this little fellow, thanks for the lovely Toller cuddles.

Looks like GR's are the hit for obedience over there! The last two winners were labs. Im off to bed, I will probably have dreams of dogs heeling beatifully. Today I have watched sooooo many youtube clips of obidience I think I finally have in my head what a good heel position looks like. Quick question though, in a front are points deducted if the dog touches you? Better not. I think Ruby should earn bonus points for targeting my crotch quite nicely with her nose They can touch you, but if they crowd you TOO much, some judges can penalise. And yep, saw the 2 Labs, but the majority were Goldies! Numerous handlers/dogs winning more than one year as well I think you and Brookie should go to Crufts so that an Aussie can win again next year.

Tried that with my Kelpie/border cross years ago when he fell in love with the German Shepherd next door but he still managed to get over, he just did more damage to himself on the other side when he landed. Went from being a dog with prick Kelpie style ears to having cauliflower button ears and also damaging a few teeth (always landed on his head) although it never seemed to bother him. She was already sterilized and he was sterilized to try to stop him but still went over the fence+trellis with stitches still in. Never bothered about jumping before she moved in and never bothered after she left. Hope you find a way to keep Lexi in and safe, perhaps she is just unsettled with the change of address, haven't you moved recently?

Depends on whether you want him to find things by air scenting or step tracking. Air scenting - start by gettting him to find a favourite toy, leave it in the open to begin with and then as he gets use to finding it start to hide it abit more until eventually you totally hide it when he is not looking. This will get him using his nose more and getting familiar with the comand. This is a game I use to play with my girl especially in Winter if it was too wet to exercise. Once familiar with the process you could then get flavoured teabags hide one and use one to give the scent. This way the dog is finding something that has less of a meaning for him but has more meaning to you in that it has the scent you want him to find. Once comfortable start trying other things with different scents including your own ie socks one to scent the dog and one to hide. Laundered socks that you have kept on your person ie down a bra are better than smelly ones of the feet, even dogs don't like those. Step tracking- you would be best to join your local tracking club to learn the correct way to do this especially if you want to go for tracking titles. There are several ways to teach it but probabaly abit too involved to go into here. You could also check on the internet or local libary. We are only in our first season of doing this so wouldn't want to give the wrong advise. Keep training reasonably short as it is very tiring for dogs to do scent work and keep the dog well hydrated.

When we trained for the ET we built up to 5km over a couple of weeks and that was what we did each training session, in the last two weeks I threw in a couple of slightly longer courses. We trained every second day rather than every day and the off day we just did our nomal exercise, walks, retrieving the ball etc. Before the ET she got a couple of days break. For the handler I recommend that you can't pad your bike seat to much, even with a gel seat it hurts. Those with dogs that have a strong prey instinct, be aware that occassionally you might have a bandicoot cut across in front of you on the ET trail. J and I went to the ET spot to give her dogs some practice for the ET last year, I was in front with Jenna and Abbey while J had Asha when a bandicoot shot out in front. Luckily I saw it in time to take action and yelled a warning to J who was by then heading into a tree as Asha had already reacted. Being a mean sister I just had to laugh as she untangled herself from the dog and bike. When Abbey did the ET I did a couple of laps for J as she has a bad knee, unfortunately Asha cut her pad the week before so was scratched. When Jenna did it I did all the laps and the hardest part was that the seat was just not padded enough.

Hey if I can do it anyone can, they don't come more unfit than me. On quiet a few legs of the ET we were told to slow down abit and Jenna didn't break out of an easy trot, I had accually been training her at a slightly faster pace than what was required. It's surpising how quickly the dogs get into condition biking, even if you only do it two or three times a week. I miss biking her but we did a major stack just before the Royal last year and the bike is cactus, bought a new one the other week so we could bike again but have decided it might be safer if I get something smaller. Just watch out for the dog stopping suddenly as in going from a fast trot to a dead stop as it can be painful.

True, very true when they reward you with so much love 3 more sleeps till sofa snuggles here too I forgot the most expensive purchase, not just for the dogs, but they were certainly a priority when choosing - a new car, a Hyundai ix35 Got to wait 6 weeks for it and I'm soooo not good at waiting We'll all have to slum it in the rental cat till then I thought I would go smaller with my car once the kids grew up but instead I drive a Starwagon. It was a case of getting something that would fit a couple of dogcrates and other doggie gear but also take the grandkids. Suits all the requirements well but kinda heavy fuel wise compared with a little car. Bet your down to counting the hours until you can have your furbabies with you, I hate to imagine how hard the wait is. I had big enough withdrawals when I went away for two weeks to NZ without my furkids any animal I came across got grabbed for a cuddle and in the shops I would pick up soft toys and wander round the shop stroking them. I think I might have an obsessive compulsive disorder when it comes to animals.

Don't worry you'll be sick of my crestie pics soon I buy waaay to much for the pooches - I seem to buy sale stuff for myself, but when it comes to them why do they always seem to end up with the most expensive option ;) Yep, I think most of us would be rich if we didn't have pets. I buy the cheapest of the cheap shampoos and hairbrushes for me but when it comes to the dogs I don't quibble about the price and one bottle of dog shampoo would probabaly cover my shampoo for the year. When I bought the dog a hairbrush that was close to $100 I decided that before she got it I was going to use it a couple of times at least. Definaitly much better than my el cheapo ones. Spend a fortune on supplements, toys, crate, beds etc for them too and yet one visit to the dr or dentist for me is too much to spend, let alone spending on anything to make me healthier. But while all my money goes into the pets I am the richest person out because I get to share life with them and that is so much better than money. Poor but happy.
