I may be wrong but I am interpreting your post as saying that if dogs are bred as close to the standard as possible, then they will be able to perform their function. A dog can be built perfectly but it matters more as to what goes on in the head as to whether it can actually go out and perform its function. Of course it needs the correct body to go with it but without the brain, the body is merely nice to look at. In some breeds, alot of the top dogs in that breed that actually perform their function to a high standard, would be laughed out of a show ring. It is unfortunately necessary in some breeds to have two distinct lines. One breeding to show ring conformation standard and another breeding for working ability and function conformation. Really not wanting to make this a one versus to other debate as they both serve purposes but just wanted to comment on the above post as some people dont realise the differences. I understand your points, but find it interesting that there are differences, when in reality, reading the standards, there probably shouldn't be. (Naive of me, I know). I also would have thought that a bad temperament wouldn't have been good in the show ring. Dog nervous of the judge etc. Would have thought that good temperament was important in showing - not easily distracted, focused on work, outgoing, responds well to people. Would have thought that these would be important in a show ring and also transferrable to do the work designed to do. temperament is an interesting issue. There are dogs I know of that do very well in the ring as they 'present' well and are 'up' - yet i know of a couple that are quite dog agressive. The judge only sees them for a few seconds and if they are well handled, may never know.

I've been watching this thread with some interest. Although I am yet to have my own first successful litter I grew up with litters and dogs (mum was a registered breeder for many years). She showed what she bred, and we understood from an early age that breeding is a big responsibility. I have always been a firm believer that form should follow function, even in the ring - and to be honest, I sometimes wonder if some of our top winners could perform the job they were originally bred for. I don't have a problem with breeders who don't show, as long as they have another way of verifying the form and function of their lines. So whether it be herding, ratting, agility whatever - as long as there is a way of objectivly assessing what you have breed, and it stands up against that assessment and what is expected of the breed, then I am fine with it (and yes, before anyone says anything, I know that for many breeds their original function is no longer possible to pursue in this day and age - but their skills and instinct should still be given a chance to be tested). What I have real problems with is someone who breeds litter after litter after litter, doesn't do anything at all with their dogs - not even anything social - and don't even look/sell to for show/working homes, just target the 'pet' market with the majority (if not all) of their progeny ending up in pet homes that are not seriously vettoed - just sent a form to fill out, no questions, no real discussion. From my observations, such breeders 9 times out of 10 end up with problems in their lines, but continue to breed regardless. We all know breeders like that, both registered and unregistered, and it is these people who IMHO are questionable about whether they are breeding for the right reasons.

My guess is that she'll probably be more than fine. But yes, we have access to the other runs if they are not in use. Will watch her closely, but she should be good - if anything gets a bit rough we can just separate them then. But it looks like we'll have less than other times, so it should be a bit more relaxed this time.

Is Min ok?

I'd love to get a couple of bench cover slips to fit the benches at the royal melbourne, and I remember a thread on this a while back. Does anyone know where to get these from (or even if they are still being made?) Thanks!

LOL most puppies (and young dogs) have this problem - they just get excited! But they should grow out of it. If not, then its a trip to the vet, but you shouldn't be worried about it now. My 8 month old female sometimes has accidents when she is really excited - but thats very rare now

There is also the You Yangs in the west, on the way to Geelong. You can take dogs there, and there is a really good climb up the mountain - well marked path, but you should be reasonably fit. And north of us there is Gellibrand Park, just near Bulla. Thats pretty nice, and not too crowded. Easy walk, some areas you can't take dogs but most of it is goo. Gellibrand has BBQs too.

We'd do hanging rock. Probably with the dog trailer

Be great to see you All you need is yourself, your dog and whatever you are bringing for the BBQ lunch we do (everyone brings a plate, or $5.00) Cost is $15 per dog, for that we get the outdoor lagoon pool, our dedicated run and if the other runs (agility and sand runs) are not in use (as is usually the case), those as well. If you want to use the indoor pool (which is used for hydrotherapy and swimming lessons mostly) you need to book that seperately with Kepala. If you want to use the hydro baths, thats extra too. Any questions just ask!
-
;) I second that! I think a bush walk would be cool! I can't wait for nicer weather to take the Pointers to Hanging rock again, or a river in Werribee. we'll be in a blush walk Pointees - just have to book it ahead!LOL
-
I'll bring the big esky then.
-
look forward to seeing you at the next one jqw! You can use the outdoor lagoon pool as part of the $15 per dog cost, if you want to use the indoor heated pool its extra and you need to book it with Kepala. The indoor one is generally used for training/hydrotherapy, the outdoor lagoon pool is the fun doggy pool

I'm sure Bob won't be the same with a baby puppy, most likely it will just be one more little sister for him to protect....lol Do I really need to say what I think you should do.... YAY!!! Can't wait ti see Buffy again!! Looking forward to meeting you, your friend and your dogs, Groupfive! p.s OJ sounds fine to me LM: I have a favour to ask, I'm thinking of using the Hyrdobath for the first time with Dakota on Sunday, she's fairly good at being bathed, but never been blow-dried, reckon you could give me some tips and maybe a helping hand? Sure. Was thinking of doing Tasha anyway.
-
Hey Groupfive- that's great news! Just cut and paste from the last post that has the list and add your name and details - and bring whatever you feel like. :D
-
Hey BellaDonna- We do Kepala every second sunday of the month - its lots of fun for both the dogs and their humans, we all get to have a great lunch and talk dogs for the day and you go home with tired but happy pooches. Sorry you can't make this one, but we do have them regularly, so if you think you can make it just let us know on the Kepala thread here on DOL when we post it up for that upcoming meet. There are some other places around Melbourne too, but like Echo I'd rather have it fenced if dogs are offlead - esp if its in an area where you get lots of general public (and their pooches!) coming through. The good thing about Kepala is that all the dogs are well behaved and everyone who comes is dog-aware, so you don't have the potential for problems that happens in doggy parks. But how about a bush walk? That could be fun - you will just have to pick the right weather for it!LOL
-
Keroppiyo - if you need help there will be plenty of people there. Just give us a yell

Yes, while we are apologising, I will do so now for Miss Tasha. The hormone fairy isn't far away, and she is slightly nuts at the moment. And naked, my beautiful Lappie girl is not only nuts but she is naked too. Miss Sausage and the Boof, however, are big and fuzzy. If you want cuddles, LC, I'm sure Boof will be happy to accomodate any requests....!
-
LOL it probably won't help when I tell you then that he is the smoochiest of my lot - and they are all pretty good at that!
