  1. Just sent it. made a few changes, told them i'd be happy to talk to a council rep about why this must be opposed. Hopefully this will be canned.
  2. Hi Lana- Welcome to the Lappie thread In answer to your question, I would say that they are like most other breeds - they do need interaction and contact, but as Fran says if you provide the mental stimulation and regular exercise they are fine to leave alone for periods of time. I have three, and according to our neighbours they don't usually hear them during the day while we are at work - and I know that when I am home they usually sleep for most of the day!LOL They are most active in the morning and evening - but thats not to say that if I was to produce a lead for a walk at anytime they would suddenly be 100% alert! If you are bringing in a puppy (of any breed) my advice would be to do it at a time when you can be at home with your puppy. Coming into a new home is such a big change and you really need time for your puppy to settle in, and you to establish a training routine re toileting/sleeping/eating/playing. You also need time to get to know each other - after all, you'll be together for many years to come so its important to start off on the right foot (or paw)!
  3. Tell them to check out Finnish Lapphunds. Easy care, working dog but not as hyped as other working breeds can be. Will take whatever exercise you will want to do, but happy to be a couch potato in the down times. They will moult, twice a year, but outside of that you won't see much hair. Coat is wash n weat - minimal amount of grooming - and they are social butterflys. Will do flyball etc, but not obsessive about balls like other working breeds can be. If they want more info they can pop into the spitz thread or contact one of us Lappie people on here. Oh, and they come in LOTS of colours
  4. Lovely MM. They are pretty much at the top of my fav breed list....*sigh*!
  5. Kind of LOL - some do say that showing is really a beauty contest anyway
  6. Nah, you'll be in charge of the operations!LOL But just in case, I'll keep trawling thought camera club sites
  7. Its what is usually called the cheekbone, but probably easier to show you The curved bone above the red dot on this image is the zygomatic arch. so for Lappies, the standard says that this area should be defined well. The Finnish Judges Guide to the Breed Standard interprets the head as follows: While the features of the Lapphund’s head should be strong, it should have a soft, teddy-like expression, attained with a skull that is broad and slightly convex, a stop that is clearly defined, and a muzzle that is strong, broad and shorter than the skull. The muzzle tapers only a little bit towards the nose and should be ‘full’ and well-cushioned. The jaws should be strong and broad, with the bottom jaw in particular to be sufficiently strong. The juncture between muzzle and skull must be straight in profile, the stop clearly defined (forming an angle with the muzzle) and the frontal furrow similarly distinct and visible through the coat. While in general Finnish Lapphunds have a scissor bite, a level bite is acceptable too, although a clearly overshot or undershot is a disqualifying fault. Premolars may be missing sometimes; this should always be mentioned in the written evaluation Does this help?
  8. its probably a good time to do it in February Evolving - the weather can be very unpredictable and showing can be hit and miss if we have a heat wave hit that weekend.
  9. I saw your work is doing a big expansion and recruitment tonight - you might get a promotion if you aren't careful!LOL I've asked for info - will let you know as soon as I do! But this is what they have on their site: Learn to produce pictures not snapshots. Twice each year the Melbourne Camera Club conducts a series of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions for people with digital and 35mm SLR cameras. Led by specialist photographers, these courses attract many beginning photographers as well as those who are more experienced but who have not had the benefit of any formal photographic training. The first course each year commences on the first Tuesday in February, the second course commences on the first Tuesday in August. Each course is conducted over a six-week period; there are six lessons (held at the MCC clubrooms in South Melbourne on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 pm until 9.00pm) and three practical workshops (in different locations, on Sunday mornings from 9.30am until noon). The $300 course fee includes all nine sessions, comprehensive course notes and six months provisional membership of the Melbourne Camera Club entitling participants to attend all club activities. Syllabus Outline 1. Tuesday - Introduction, cameras and film, basics of exposure 2. Sunday - Understanding camera controls - practical workshop 3. Tuesday - Photographic lighting 4. Sunday - Photography outdoors - workshop and excursion 5. Tuesday - Photographic composition 6. Tuesday - Portraits and people 7. Sunday - Composition and outdoor portraits - workshop and excursion 8. Tuesday - Travel photography 9. Tuesday - Review of participants' photographs, discussion and conclusion -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For further information please email the Introductory Course Coordinator
  10. Thanks heaps PossumCorner - I've emailed the Melbourne Camera Club! Hey Evolving, their next course is in February - want to do it? Looks good!
  11. After coverting my friend's fantastic DSLRs for years, I have finally taken the plunge myself. I have just bought a Pentax K-7 with a Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC - its came with a free Sigma 24-70mm F3.5-5.6 UC Asp lens as well. I have had the SLR like point and shoots for a while, but they just weren't doing what I needed and I was getting frustrated by the automatic nature to them! However, I don't know anything about apatures and lenses etc, so I'm think I probably need to do a beginners course. Does anyone know of anything like that in Melbourne, preferably in the inner west? Thanks!
  12. goodness - you are going to be flat out!! Hopefully you'll do really well - do they have a BIS rabbit? ;)
  13. Yep, we're on at the Melbourne Royal, but the lappies on on the thursday 23rd I thought

  16. Sounds good - hoipefully LC will be fit and ready to do her usual zoomies then! I'm going to probably bump the show day that I've managed to enter thats going to clash with the August Kepala - we'll be doing a show the weekend before anyway - because the end of August and September are going to be big show months. We will be away in SA for the Adelaide Royal when the September kepala is on - so you guys will have to have fun for us!!
  17. Oh dear, Charlotte is challenging Bronte for the title of bubble dog! Hopefully she will be well soon! Good news I've just ordered my new DSLR camera - I've never had one before, know nothing about lenses, probably won't be able to work it out for ages - but hey, should be fun learning!! For those who know/are interested I got a k7 Pentax with a Sigma 17 - 200mm lens, which comes with a bonus Sigma 24-70mm lens. So for the kepala people who have DSLR cameras, i'm going to bug you at the next meet with questions about what the hell I'm ment to be doing. I may even read the instruction manual on this one......!LOL

  19. hmmmm *ponders a team of Lappies*!!!
  20. KC is the canine version of the flu, and my understanding is that yes, it can be airborn. Also, the vaccination you get only covers one strain of what is called kennel cough and there are actually several - so it may be that if you have a vaccinated dog that gets KC its one of the strains that is not vaccinated for (or its a milder version of the one that is vaccinated for). All the dogs I have evern owned have all had it at some point, including those who have been vaccinated. I don't worry about it now, but I'm in the less is more camp re vaccinations. I view it like the flu vaccinations in humans - those at risk should have it.
  21. sounds neorological. Its up to you, you may want to get it checked over by a vet, but I would certainly monitor him and see how he goes, if it happens again I would def be taking him in to the vet and asking for a referral.
  22. No problem LM! Didn't get many photos of your babies today! :D Thats ok - I'm never short of pics here!!LOL
  23. great pics Pointees - hope you don't mind but have stolen one for my facebook (of Bear) !
